A fun little diner on Hertel! The staff were very friendly and the food was delicious. Our portions were also huge! The chocolate chip pancakes were thick and fluffy and the home fries were some of the crispiest I’ve ever had. If you’re looking for a classic diner experience in Buffalo, check out Bertha’s!

Google
Their diner was very homey, went there with a friend and we absolutely loved the vibes and how friendly they were. I ordered 2 eggs with toast, bacon and fries while my friend ordered the rooster. We also got the short stack buttermilk pancakes to share which were fluffy and really tasty. Highly recommend!

Google
I try and make my way here every Sunday for Sunday brunch with my friends. This place is 10/10. The food is AMAZING and worth every dime. It gives exactly what is supposed to as far as the "old school diner vibe" i love it. The owner/cook is FANTASTIC so friendly and professional, its amazing that she cooks it all by herself and truly makes you appreciate the diner/food even more. For her to be the ONLY cook the wait time for food was not bad at all. The waitress was BEAUTIFUL, she was such a sweetheart and so pleasant to talk to. She made sure we had everything we needed. She gave multiple recommendations as sometimes my friends i are indecisive about what we want. This is by far one of the best breakfast spots in buffalo. 10/10 experience every single time.

Google
This place was just okay. We were not aware that it was cash only but I do carry emergency cash for situations like this. The food was okay, service was okay, atmosphere was okay. I was pretty hungry and the eggs benedict I ordered were just fine. The eggs were cooked right but I felt something was lacking in the dish. Our server was very friendly but the wait time on our food was much longer than expected. A table that came in after us received food much earlier than us so that was not fun to see while you're starving. The place is very tiny. It has a typical diner atmosphere I guess. Overall, I'm not sure I would return especially with the long wait time. Maybe if I'm in the area craving diner food, I would.

Bertha's was absolutely amazing. Packed almost to the brim! We got counter seats and the ladies that run the show absolutely killed it. By no means expect food in a short amount of time with how many people are getting serviced. But absolutely delicious food, the ladies were on top of it, and just a cute little place overall. Pictured are the peanut butter waffles!

Google
Excellent in every sense of the word! There a great diners and then there is Bertha’s. Family owned and operated, the staff is very attentive and friendly, making sure you feel at home whether it’s your first time or 50th time there. Now let’s talk about the food… I had the Eggs Benedict with a side of corned beef hash. Everything was SPOT ON. Eggs poached to perfection, bacon and muffin crispy and the hollandaise was absolutely delicious. Star of the show was the hash. Crispy, tasty. Can’t say enough about this place! Run there!

Google
Great little breakfast diner. We arrived about a half hour after opening and we were immediately greeted and seated. Come early to easily find parking. Food was great, atmosphere was great. Will definitely come back next time I’m in buffalo

Google
Excellent customer Service! My favorite breakfast place. The food and coffee are so good!. I love to sit at the bar and talk to the staff and watch all the yummy food being made! You should definitely check out!

Christopher M.

Yelp
Bertha's is a gem. I enjoy eating at diners and this place has it all, even the counter and stools. The food is really good. Mia is a wonderful and friendly server and she keeps the coffee cup filled. Try the hash. I'll definitely return.

Jonathan G.

Yelp
Food at Bertha's is always amazing! It actually is the highlight to my weekend. I have it scheduled to go every other weekend because if I don't get my fixings enough my week is terrible! Beeyah is amazing, so quick and friendly. Love catching up with her every time I'm in there. Every affordable and gives old school diner vibes and super clean.

Cat D.

Yelp
Small diner, big portions! You'll leave happy and satisfied. Here's what we ordered: - 2 eggs, home fries and toast with bacon - The rooster: 3 egg omelet filled with a serving of corned beef hash and cheddar served on rye toast, topped with hollandaise and a splash of sriracha served with home fries Everything is straight forward and delicious. I recommend coming for a quick bite if you're around. The service was fast and food is made with love.

Craig H.

Yelp
Best breakfast in buffalo!!!! Staff is amazing too!! Get the rooster, Dennis, or eggs benedict!

Yelp
Believe the reviews. This place is incredible. I was visiting my daughter when we were trying to decide where to go to breakfast. I wanted to try something new this time around. She picked Bertha's. I guess we came at the right time, midweek...mid-morning, no wait. Yes, it is small. Yes, it has a cool vibe. Yes, the food was amazing. I ordered a pepperoni & cheese over eggs breakfast and it was outstanding. My daughter ordered biscuits & gravy and I want to tell you, that was some of the best gravy on a biscuit I've ever had. So delicious. My cup of coffee was never empty, despite business picking up and the one server in constant motion. Don't skip Bertha's. This is a gem. I can't wait to revisit on an upcoming visit.

Ryan S.

Yelp
What an adorable hidden gem! Believe the reviews everyone, this place is wonderful. Very friendly staff, a quaint atmosphere (absolutely love the painting of their bar on the wall, makes me think they're very proud of the work they do), and the FOOD. I just got a breakfast platter with pancakes, eggs and bacon, but the pancakes were delicious (barely needed to put syrup on 'em) and the bacon and eggs were cooked beautifully (the amount of times I've had overcooked over-easy eggs not here though!). I will absolutely be coming back here!

Laura D.

Yelp
biscuits and gravy w an overeasy egg and home fries. Was excellent, cooked perfectly and served hot! Highly recommend with the high test coffee! Yumba

Yelp
When you hear the expression, "[Fill in the blank] was worth the wait," you can pick any item off the menu at Bertha's and fill in that blank. We came for the first time on a Saturday morning and were lucky to get a table for two without having to wait. It was the only open table so we counted ourselves fortunate. To make a long story short, we waited over an hour to get our food, and when it finally came out, there's that moment when your brain makes the split second decision as the food comes towards the table whether it was worth the wait or not. The plating here isn't fancy, but I'll say it like this: the food is plated the way that perfectly prepared diner food is plated. The look of the food at the plate gives you that immediate sense of comfort and satisfaction. One bite of the potatoes and we literally looked at each other and said, "I'd wait an hour for these potatoes." The ambience was great. The service was great. The food was great. The coffee was satisfactory. They don't take cards, but they take cash and Venmo, so we opted for Venmo and that was very easy. Overall, cannot recommend enough. I will say, don't go during prime time and expect to be in and out quickly. Eating here is about the experience and some experiences take time. Enjoy!

Kelly R.

Yelp
the corned beef hash was an EXPERIENCE. we went there on a saturday and it was pretty busy so just expect to wait a little longer, especially if you have plans after. it was so worth it though once we got our food. will definitely be going again! staff was super nice

Wayne B.

Yelp
Classic diner in the middle of the heart of restaurant row of Hertel Ave. The food is consistently tasty, portion size is more than generous, and staff is always so kind and welcoming. Whether you're looking for brunch with your family, or a destination with friends, or your significant other, its worth the trip! Couple quick points: Best pancakes in Buffalo (my kids love 'em, I steal bites) The Rooster is a perfect flavor combination, if you like some spice. Cash only, so be ready. Sunday mornings, there is a wait for a table by 9am, at the latest. Plan accordingly!

CJ M.

Yelp
Came in for breakfast with a table for 7. There is only one table in the joint big enough for more than 4 - fyi. Once we were seated, both waitresses attended to us in a friendly manner. We ordered and waited a fair amount of time, but it was worth it. The food was amazing. The breakfast burrito was perfect, the pancakes fluffy, the home fries seasoned with love and the eggs - omg the eggs were so whipped and fluffy they melted in your mouth. The over all experience was 5 stars all around. Even the long trek to the bathroom was enjoyable LOL *** great iced tea!

Rita J.

Yelp
Revisiting after a long while for an early breakfast. Got there just before the wait and it was hopping! I love the coffee here and the refills were plentiful. Maybe because the wait seemed long. Totally worth it though. My only disappointment is the chicken and waffles now is made with chicken strips. I'm a fan of the bone in they use to serve so, I went with the Rooster omelet with rye bread and hashbrowns instead and loved it. Their cb hash is dynamite! I wasn't sure I'd dig the hollandaise sauce but that was perfect on this omelet. Great breakfast and an awesome server too!

Kristy M.

Yelp
I would rate this a 10! The food is so good I got the Two Eggs and my mom got the big breakfast plate so delicious the servings are big but you'll just want to take it home and gobble it all up!

shelby s.

Yelp
Cute little joint on Hertel. Food was amazing. Best hollandaise sauce I've ever had! Food takes awhile, but there's only 1 cook I think.

Elena D.

Yelp
The food was very good. There was a wait, but the host made sure we knew we would be tended to. While waiting we sat at the cafe next store per her request and played some games which made the wait a lot better than it could have been. It is very small and the vibe is something of which you don't find very awesome. I loved the old fashioned ambiance.

Chris C.

Yelp
Love this place would be a perfect 5 if not for the difficulty of getting a seat and extreme long wait times. Food is great though!

Sandra A.

Yelp
Nice place to have a huuuuuge delicious breakfast! Great portion for the price value and yummy! Very nice service, friendly and a feel of mom's kitchen. We recommend it!

Cory W.

Yelp
We wanted to try something new for breakfast this morning and with the aid of Yelp, we came up with Bertha's. Located on the heart of Hertel next to North Park theatre, Bertha's is a pretty small but nice stop for breakfast. We got seated and got our order in fairly quickly. I was wanting to get biscuits and gravy, however they were out of biscuits, so I ended up with something called the backwoods which is sausage, eggs, and gravy on a Belgian waffle. The food came out pretty quickly while we worked on our drinks. The meal ended up being something of a mixed bag. The potatoes that come on the side of the meal were the star of the show. Honestly, they may have been the best I've ever had. I love a breakfast potato but nothing ruins it faster than when they are undercooked/soggy. These were super crispy and seasoned - I can't say enough good about them. The main dish itself was a little underwhelming but still pretty decent, mainly in that the Gravy wasn't as flavorful as I would have liked. Also the waffle tasted like it may have had vanilla in it, which would be cool in a normal Belgian waffle but it felt strange considering the savory toppings. Overall it was an enjoyable meal and I would go back again in the future to explore more of the menu.

Joe S.

Yelp
Average food. Service was good. Prices were sky high. I think for the portion size prices are somewhat in bc line, but high.

Barb T.

Yelp
Excellent food and service! I didn't like the hash browns but that's me. Small and accepts cash only or Venmo, cash app,

Kelsie K.

Yelp
Betha's is everything you could want in a diner! Our group of 8 got there a little after 9am on a Monday morning and it was a good thing we were early because the place was pretty crowded by the time we left! They really only have one large table and it can only comfortably fit 6. Service was prompt and our food came out quickly. You can watch it all made just on the other side of the counter. The super fried chicken and waffles was so worth it. You'll get three pieces of chicken - a breast piece, a wing and a drumstick even though it only says two on the menu. The waffle is large and fluffy and you can order the eggs in any style you like. They were out of the gravy that typically comes with it, but I was perfectly happy with syrup. There is parking on the street right out front, you'll just pay at the station. This place is cash only, but they do have an atm inside. The bathroom is a little sketch, you have to walk a bit to get to it. Don't forget to visit some of the murals lining the alley of the street while you're here!

Alex C.

Yelp
A small and attentive little diner tucked away on Hertel next to the theatre. We ordered the Boot Camp and James Dean which came out pretty quickly despite there only being 1 waitress. Their fruits tasted pretty fresh and their waffle lives up to their famous name. The waffle especially had a really nice melted cheese and ham cooked into it that mixed the flavors really well in one bite. We definitely would come here again for a quick bite!

Fonda R.

Yelp
Well ppl please visit this restaurant and get your eat on. You won't be disappointed. Food comes out nice n hot n fast. This is our second time coming here, worth the drive. Sorry no pictures forgot to take ,food was smelling so good I just started eating. I ordered the Big Breakfast platter, prices are great right along with the food. Love my waitress ,thanks again for good food n service.

Samantha M.

Yelp
Bertha's has a special place in my heart. It always will. While some of the mood is pretty good, the pancakes are the best! You cannot go wrong with them! Now that i no longer live in Buffalo, I crave their pancakes and there is no place close to them in STL.

Rachel L.

Yelp
This is such a gem in the neighborhood! The food is great (especially that corned beef hash!!) and the service is friendly and quick. Weekends are slammed for a good reason, so if you hate waiting make the trip on a weekday (and even then, who knows, cause it can be bumpin on a wednesday morning since it's really that good).Every order is made fresh right behind the counter, so be nice because this crew works their butts off!

Stephanie P.

Yelp
I totally see why this place was packed the whole time we were there. The pancakes were HUGE! I didn't have them but they looked amazing and seriously, one order is more than enough for 2-3 people. I had the chicken and waffles with the sweet gravy. Not bad! The waffle was delicious and the gravy was great; but while the chicken was fried well, it didn't have much taste. But those home fries?! Those home fries?! PERFECTION. Super crispy on the outside and seasoned perfectly. It also came with eggs, which I didn't eat much of. My date's pancakes came with bacon, which I intended to try, but it was a bit overdone for my taste. The staff were friendly and the vibe was very cozy. Beware... seating was quite limited so if you're coming in with a large party it can be a struggle. Also, I was surprised to find out they didn't take cards but they do have an ATM on site (with a $2.95 fee ). All things considered, I would absolutely go back in the future.

Laurie G.

Yelp
Always looking for cheap breakfast eats and new places to dive. Found this place on Yelp, in the "top ten" section. This restaurant is very tiny, so I wouldn't recommend going with a large group unless you go later in the day, when the restaurant is less crowded. We went on a Sunday afternoon for a late breakfast, and the place was packed. We waited about 5-10 minutes to be seated, and our waitress greeted us right away. I had to try the "grilled blueberry banana bread" after reading the rave reviews, and it did not disappoint. The homemade bread is soft and almost cake like in the middle, oozing with fresh blueberries. The grill char on the outside gives this tasty treat a smoky flavor. I also ordered the "Rooster", mainly because my eyes are bigger than my stomach lol. this restaurant is known for their corned beef hash, so I had to try it. I didn't know how I would feel about an omelette stuffed with corned beef doused in Hollandaise sauce and sriracha. Seemed like an odd combination, but it was perfect. This omelette is served on top of rye bread which really add to the flavor combination. Pro tip: arrive early, or prepare to wait. They appeared to only have one cook in the kitchen when we there. It took nearly an hour and a a half for our food to arrive because of how busy they were. The wait would not deter me from going back here again. They are also cash only, but there is an ATM in the restaurant

Yelp
I wanted to try a new breakfast place on Saturday and that took me to Bertha's Diner on Hertel! This is a place that I've heard basically nothing about so I went in with nothing more then a yelp page to go off. The place looks like pretty much every single small breakfast place you could think of with white walls and generic things on the walls (not a bad thing, just an observation). The menu here is pretty large and featured pretty much all the things you could possibly be craving for breakfast. I settled on ordering the biscuits and gravy with scrambled eggs and home fries, because I'm a total sucker for anything involving sausage gravy. The food didn't take too long to come out and when it did I was very pleased with my meal. The sausage gravy was tasty, the biscuits were soft and moist thanks to the gravy, the eggs were cooked right, and the home fries had some pretty great hash browns as well, overall a pretty darn good breakfast. I do have one complaint that bugs me about any place that does this, and that's being cash only. It's outdated and all together rude to customers. If I can take 37 different payment options on my iPhone without issue, there's no reason that a business would do something to not accommodate for all of there customers (having an ATM inside does not fix this situation, it just makes people pay a service fee). Again, it's not a customer-friendly decision. Otherwise, I did enjoy my breakfast at Bertha's and even though the cash only thing definitely rubs me the wrong way, I enjoyed my overall experience here.

Jess K.

Yelp
Breakfast this morning and we were super impressed with the veggie omelette. The eggs are really thin and the vegetables are crunchy - it's honestly fantastic. The sitting pretty entree left much to be desired, and they ran out of bacon...but it's a good spot to grab brunch when in North Buffalo.

Michelle Z.

Yelp
I'm a fan of diners and this location was recommended by a friend. Located on busy main st but very cozy inside. It is a small place but that's what makes it cozy and warm! I ordered the puzzler and it was delicious! It had a lot of greens on the bottom which I liked. My bf ordered the Dennis and I stole a bite and it was great! I def want to come back and try the cinnamon waffle!

Daybel V.

Yelp
This place is a cute mom and pop diner. It's small but homey. Makes it feel like your having a home cooked breakfast at grandmas. This diner is cash only. The portions are HUGE!! But the food is soooo good. The bacon is incredible. Cooked to perfection. The only reason I gave it a 4 star is because it needs a little renovation love.

Jeff D.

Yelp
Delicious and inexpensive! I've lived in north buffalo for over 3 years and finally got the chance to come down to Bertha's and experience the hype firsthand. Service is what you'd come to expect from a diner- efficient and quick moving. Food- although nothing fancy, it's much better than most breakfast spots. The pancakes are the size of a tire off of a smart car(no exaggeration). Cash only, but they have an ATM inside near the front!

Liza F.

Yelp
Hokey moley. This might be the best breakfast I've ever had. They were certainly the best home fries, bacon, and sausage I've ever had. I had the breakfast sandwich and my friend had the garbage plate. Spectacular. The place is super small and everyone is friendly and working hard. I will definitely be back.

Jackie k.

Yelp
We were so disappointed with this place after seeing all the good reviews. My pancakes were doughy, the home fries were bland and the corned beef hash was salty and had no potatoes in it. The corned beef was not diced, the texture was like it was puréed. A side order was $9.00! The worst part was that we waited One full hour for mediocre food. It is not like the cook was not moving, but there is only one cook. There is really no room for two people to work in the small space but if they cannot get food out in a timely manner they should eliminate a few tables or revise the menu.

Jenn J.

Yelp
Bertha's has become my go-to when stuck on where to go for breakfast. I'll make plans with people to go other places and they'll be closed sometimes so I'm always the one to say, let's go to Bertha's! Bertha's seems to be open on holidays and days surrounding holidays. It just always appears to be open for breakfast. The food is good. It's standard diner food. I love the the menus are velcroed to the wall. Everything is just so simple here that it's perfect. Bertha's is really that dependable diner that's always there for you.

Dennis I.

Yelp
I loved this very Old School Diner! I had the Benedict with peameal bacon. It was absolutely perfect and the way they do the crispy Home fries is amazing! Next time I have to try their Dennis- it looks and sounds amazing but did not regret my choice this morning.

Monica J.

Yelp
Everything was amazing and we ordered more food I just couldn't wait to eat! The staff and the owner was friendly and very accommodating! We were visiting from Chicago and they really took care of us and gave us plenty of recommendations. When we visit again we will surely stop by again! Please try the corned beef hash you won't be disappointed!!!! Thanks

Greg R.

Yelp
Fantastic breakfast!! Due to COVID, seating was limited but we were able to sit at the counter. Service was excellent. After ordering our coffee and iced water, my wife ordered the Boot Camp breakfast and I ordered the Meat Lovers omlet!! The boot camp breakfast was a scrambled egg white on top of a bed of fresh spinach, tomatoes and feta. She loved it! My omlet was awesome! Loved this place!!

Michelle A.

Yelp
Doesn't look like much but the food was great and the service was better! Crispy Bacon, eggs done just right, fluffy waffle!

Lynette S.

Yelp
This was my first time in a long time at Bertha's diner. I'm happy to report it's even better than ever. I love the quirky names for the delicious breakfasts! Dennis is definitely a breakfast to try. Actually, they have breakfast all day so you could have it for lunch if you want. I will definitely be back for a waffle as soon as I get a chance. Keep in mind it's cash only. There's an ATM in front. It's a cozy spot, but worth the wait if there's a line.

Brianna S.

Yelp
I'm really happy I found this place because it's one of my favorites now! This cozy little diner has limited seating but the best menu. I try something new every time I visit and not a single dish has let me down. The Rooster though.........out of this world. Favorite menu items hands down. It's the same waitress every time I visit, she's attentive and great. Just try this place, you won't be disappointed.

Sheryl P.

Yelp
This was my second time here and once again everything was great, a nice little gem in North Buffalo

Elyse C.

Yelp
Hertel restaurant gem right next to North Park theatre! First time here on a day off from work and wanted to look for a good, cheap breakfast/lunch. On a Monday, surprisingly, there was a lot of people eating but still had tables available. Our waitress was super nice and pointed out that their Saturday/Sunday specials, if they have all the items left to use for Monday, we can order them. So we did! We tried the chicken and waffles and the Rooster. OMG these two dishes were amazing! I would highly suggest trying these dishes. I know I'll be back soon for them

Susan B.

Yelp
I went to Bertha's for the first time yesterday. I was alone (as I usually am these days). Even though I prefer to sit in a booth, the waitress sat me at the counter and said, "Singles have to sit at the counter." I'm a paying customer, and I can't choose where I want to sit? Also, I was told the restrooms were unavailable. I drive for a living. All I wanted was to go to the bathroom after hours on the road and have a comfortable place to sit and enjoy a hot breakfast. The food was good thus the 3 stars. The service was not.

Grace V.

Yelp
Best breakfast service i've had in Buffalo in a long time. Very friendly staff, calm, quick environment and the home fries are to die for. Love the 50's vibe, definitely will be coming back.

Robert P.

Yelp
I've been here twice the first time was the but now they I've gone back the food Dudu taste the same maybe due to new cooks or ownership but I ordered the same thing both times and it just wasn't on point it was fun while it lasted .

Steve M.

Yelp
Great neighborhood lunch spot! The food is always fresh and delicious! Recommend it highly! I go there all the time. I have my favorite sandwiches!

Hailey M.

Yelp
I honestly didn't know breakfast could be that good. We ordered the corn beef hash, veggie omelette with cheese, and a blueberry pancake. Everything was fresh, made to order, and unbelievable flavorful. The ambiance was very quaint with black and white checked floor, red booths, a bar with swivel chairs, and the refrigerator even had sweet family photos on it. Service was great and the staff was very sweet and personable. It gives the complete vibe of a great, family owned restaurant. We live in Texas but I promise we'll be back.

Jim M.

Yelp
Folks, disregard the outdated reviews. Under the current management, Bertha's is one of the best breakfast places in Buffalo. It's tiny, but the variety and quality of their takes on familiar diner foods is amazing. They make the best corned beef hash in Buffalo: finely minced, perfectly seasoned, perfectly crisp on the outside and mouth-watering my tasty inside. The fried chicken in their chicken and waffle is juicy, crisp, and not greasy, and the waffle is served with a secret sweet and savory gravy. And if you're there at lunch time, try the patty melt--you won't be sorry. The picture below show the Rooster omelet: three eggs filled with their homemade corned beef hash and cheddar, topped with Hollandaise and a drizzle of Sriracha. Sublime!
