"While traveling on I-8 between Phoenix and San Diego, consider stopping by the Space Age Lodge and Restaurant. Originally built in 1965, it was designed by Al Stovall, a man who made his fortune in the plastics and metals industries during World War II. Mr. Stovall designed five space-themed hotels: four in Anaheim, California (just near Disneyland) and one in Pima Bend, Arizona. The Pima Bend location is the only remaining hotel designed by Stovall that has retained its Jetsons-like feel. The lobby entrance is topped with a UFO with outer space seen throughout the decor—even the umbrella table by the pool is a flying saucer. The original Space Age restaurant caught fire in 1998—owners claimed that it was attacked by aliens but a  malfunctioning neon sign appears to be the more likely culprit—but was rebuilt with the same outer space theme. Inside are murals depicting astronauts and spaceships, including the USS Enterprise. The food is typical diner fare with out-of-this-world names like the Jupiter Burger (cheeseburger with grilled onions and bacon). If you want a piece of nostalgia to take home, there are coffee mugs for sale with the iconic sign on them. None" - shehangsbrightly

Great overnight option travelling through. The staff was super friendly. The breakfast was delicious and the service friendly. The meal takes a little time so plan accordingly if you want to leave quickly, but breakfast is worth the wait. The rooms are remodeled and clean. Since it's an old motel, the noise level is higher than a newer hotel, but we didn't find it bad. The pool area is great and the parking area is kept clean and tidy. We'd definitely stay here again when travelling through.

This is the second time we’ve stayed here on our way to or from So. California. The staff are always helpful and friendly. The rooms are impeccably clean and we enjoy a good nights sleep on a comfortable bed. Enjoy your stay in this quaint and fun themed hotel. Breakfast in the restaurant next door was also excellent.

Great place to sleep on a trip where there were not many options. Was expecting blah but was delighted. Newly remodeled. Clean. Comfortable and spacious. Little bit of road noise. AC worked like a charm thank goodness but was a loud unit.

When we saw this place existed, we had to stay here during our one-night stay in Gila Bend. We love kitschy motels, and this one fit the bill. The lobby is really into maintaining the space theme. (Don't forget to look up!) What you won't find are tired rooms clinging to kitsch. Our room was recently renovated with engineered wood floors, a super comfortable bed, cozy towels, and drapes that blocked out the light. The bathroom was fine, with the large sink area outside and behind a half wall. Everything was sparkling clean. A train runs behind the motel (no horn) which my husband did not hear. I am a light sleeper, so I heard the train's rumble. Occasionally, a loud truck would go by on the road in front of the motel, and I heard that, too. Husband, not once. Breakfast is included at the space and alien themed restaurant next door. You order off a menu with decent offerings. We also ate dinner there, and that was fine, too. All in all, this is a great place to stay and if we are ever in Gila Bend again, we would stay here without hesitation.

Google
Clean, food great, interior design charming--this UFO Space age Lodge was charming! A surprise, but definitely would go back again for the experience. Full Breakfast with menu and choices. Bed very comfortable, and interior of room felt like a Jetson Cartoon--fun! Couldn't ask for a better experience. Highly recommend.

I have enjoyed staying at this hotel over the years as I travel back and forth between NM and California. The desert seems the perfect place for a Space Theme motel. I started staying there when it was a private motel. Now owned by Best Western. They have done a great job renivating it and still keeping that kitchy space theme.

Google
My room was as nice as any Best Western PLUS. Recently remodeled and very clean. The price was resonable. Hotel staff are very hard working. The attached restaurant was normal family style but good. A little quirky outside but probably fun for the kids with Space Age Theme.

Bita Carrico

Google
Newly renovated perfectly comfortable. Not fancy, but one of the only options on the way between San Diego and Phoenix. Wish the there were a little…more, though. I get that some people won’t care for the space theme, but those that do, those that stay here, would appreciate even more spacey aspects.

Yelp
Never before have I seen a motel room that was so spotless & immaculately clean...at least it appeared that way. Cleanest room ever! That was very impressive. This is a very cool motel along the main strip through Gila Bend. The beds were so comfortable, nice pillows, good large TV. It was also quieter than most motels although that might be because it was Gila Bend. No traffic noise passing by, not a sound from the parking lot or other rooms. We only stayed one night to rest during a road trip. We didn't try their restaurant because we had to hit the road before it opened (6am). Based on our experience we would definitely make this an overnight stop for any roadtrip through here in the future & there's a great Italian restaurant across the street for dinner.

Yelp
This is my second time traveling to work in Gila Bend....the first time I stayed at another place....which I did not enjoy so I decided to try this spot. They (Gila Bend) recently had a flood (mod-August) this place was one that saw extensive damage...so the rooms had recently been remodeled...the rooms were clean with new flooring and furniture....the bathroom was clean - the only thing I didn't like was it had a very low toilet which for someone 220 pounds is not good. Other than that it was a pleasant stay....next time I'm out I'll be staying again. There are limited choices in Gila Bend for everything...but at least I know where to stay in the future. Easy access to hotel from street and plenty of parking. I had to be somewhere early so I didn't try the complementary breakfast or go into the restaurant/bar area. But the rooms are clean.

Shawn S.

Yelp
Modern and clean rooms. With a night stay, you get a hot or continental breakfast in the restaurant next door. Very professional staff. The RR tracks near the back of the property and Highway out front were not as noisy as I thought they would be.

Daryn B.

Yelp
Normally I would give a hotel similar to this a 2 but I was a little impressed by this one. This is your typical motel that was probably built around the 50's when the little two lane highway passed through town. Think the movie Cars. So it is easy to assume this would be outdated but yet it's not. The bed was extremely comfortable and easy to sleep on. The air conditioner did a great job even though it was 110 outside. The refrigerator in the room was a decent size. The room was clean. Most impressive was that the room was quiet. Even with the Union Pacific mainline running right behind my room with large freights passing constantly, with the exception of a humming noise of the engine as it passed you wouldn't know. No horn, no clickity clack, no vibration. The space theme is an interesting touch. The roof top UFO at night is a sight in this town for sure. The murals over the lobby are even more so. Then add the glitter paint to the walls for star effects. The owner has done a great job of incorporating the theme throughout. Not that Gila Bend is a destination but if needing a room while passing through this is definitely a good choice.

Yelp
Clean and friendly themed motel on the way back to LA makes for the right length day drive away from Los Angeles. Rooms are clean and functional. I really enjoyed a hot bath in the sparkling tub. The bed was comfy and quiet for the night. Part of the great value of this motel is the included breakfast at the attached diner. Our server Joyce was cheerful on Xmas eve and served up a proper bacon and eggs breakfast for us to fuel our journey home.

Ron R.

Yelp
Decent little hotel in this desert truck stop town. Fresh, clean rooms and friendly staff. Breakfast is included with stay at the hotel restaurant. Get there early for best service.

J. D.

Yelp
Checked into a room with a non working shower, was offered a discount around 4%. , insulting! Took hours to come to this resolution which was unacceptable to me. Eventually I was offered another room around 9:30. This was one of my worst hotel experiences to date

Rachelle A.

Yelp
We decided to stay here on our way back to San Diego from 4 corners monument, the pictures made the rooms look nice, so worth spending the $30 additional to stay here vs another hotel down the street. When I walked inside the office to checkin, I was greeted by a really nice guy (didn't catch his name) who was the extremely friendly and helpful. The office looks really cool with the space themed decor and murals on the ceiling and the walls. Outside, there's really cool lights, even glitter paint on the exterior walls. We were very impressed before we even went into the room. The room was very clean, even the tv remote was in a bag. The room was nice and cool, and had a really cool layout. We loved the decor on the walls, and the bathroom mirror and sink being separate from the shower/toilet room is perfect for families or groups traveling. I'd totally love here to stay again if I ever had a reason to be in the area. It's a very nicely decorated hotel that has a cool feel to it. I'd recommend anyone to stay here who's in the area, you won't regret it.

Dave M.

Yelp
If you're the type of traveler who loves roadside attractions, ghost towns, and aliens, the Space Age Lodge should be on your bucket list. It was on mine, and I finally got to visit last year. Totally worth it.I came away with a souvenir shirt of a naked alien riding a chopper, if that tells you anything. Beyond that, the only thing you should know is that this is one of the few bargain hotels where the included breakfast is REAL FOOD AT THE DINER and not just a crappy batter to pour into a waffle machine.

Debbie C.

Yelp
I booked this hotel through a third party and monies were deducted from my account. When I went to hotel the receptionist guy stated there was no rooms available and couldn't accommodate my request. He had no remorse and attitude was indifferent. I've never dealt with this situation. The worst part is the 3rd party refused to reimburse me for that particular day I rented the room and NEVER STAYED!! If your in Gilabend Az don't stay here!!

Monica F.

Yelp
We really enjoyed our pit stop here on our road trip for the night. We had a dog and when we walked in the room, it was cold and the attached restaurant had great food! Joyce who assisted with the complimentary breakfast at the restaurant was beyond helpful and so friendly. The parking was also very accommodating for the truck and trailer we had. We highly recommend this place!

Lisa S.

Yelp
Affordable, friendly staff, clean rooms, free breakfast, and aliens... what more could you possibly ask for? Highly recommend.

Sarah A.

Yelp
This hotel deserves a five star review. It's very clean and spacious rooms. It's a starship theme it's really cute and they offer a free breakfast which is a full breakfast. Free parking, lots of space for pets to go to the bathroom. Very friendly staff. I would definitely come here again if I was in the area.

Robert A.

Yelp
Reserved a pet room, asked at check in if in fact we had a pet room, were informed we did in fact have a pet room, at that point the $20.00 pet up charge should have been included in daily room rate, was charged an additional $20.00 dollars above what we paid for room rate when final bill settled. Hotel said we did not inform them we had a pet and added the charge several days after check out. Never again Best Western Space Age.... never again. You suck.

Walter S.

Yelp
Very nice renovated rooms, pet-friendly, good breakfast and cheerful staff.

JoAnne W.

Yelp
Stayed here in October, the space theme is very cute. The rooms had been remodeled and were nice and clean. Enjoyed the adjacent restaurant. The pool was clean, though it was locked, but quickly unlocked by the great staff. Only con lots of dead bugs in parking lot and sidewalks. Also we were given a room next to the maintenance room, which had a gassy smell.

Leslie L.

Yelp
A little iconic nod to the 60s and the space program- place was very clean and staff was great. The adjacent restaurant lacked in food quality but is a must see for inspired kitsch! The sparkly paint, and great lobby and restaurant murals are a must see

Kimberly R.

Yelp
This place is great I'll definitely come back on road trips between Sedona and San Diego. Awesome sparkly walls at night, cool spaceship decorations and lights, paintings. My kid loved it too! Rooms are very simple and updated, walls a little thin so you can hear neighbors but mine weren't loud.

George S.

Yelp
Very odd period piece preserved in the middle of nowhere . Clean functional decent breakfast included good pizza nearby. I will stay here again it is five star in this neighborhood

Thea H.

Yelp
Rooms are ok but have carpet , all of us woke up with stuffy nose... breakfast was at restaurant.. asked for a side of toast with completely breakfast and was charged for toast !!! After paying 160 for a room and they charge for toast!!! Sad

Exion H.

Yelp
I was glad to have booked my stay at this space themed hotel. Everything there was meticulously decorated to match the theme of making you feel like you are at a space port. Unfortunately, I arrived during a giant sand storm that knocked out power for the entire duration of my stay so I had no air conditioning and light. The staff were very accommodating for me and my daughters. The room was clean and breakfast was included. Be sure to bring your camera!

Steve W.

Yelp
Clean and comfortable, the ufo was cool too! Breakfast was the best complimentary sit down meal I've had at a hotel not five star rated.

Erin A.

Yelp
This is an excellent little hotel, with a lot of character. Front desk staff were very friendly. It is right next to the train tracks and the trains run all night. Our family loves trains, so it didn't bother us. I actually enjoy hearing them, however, if you're a light sleeper, I'd recommend ear plugs.

Toni N.

Yelp
This was not what we expected it is in the middle of the desert on the 10 freeway and not our regular go to hotel but we were super happy with the stay. The Livy way fun the kids and I enjoyed it. The room was clean and the grounds and pool were clean too. They provided a crib on request. The restaurant was still being revamped but it was fine to eat at a dinner style space restaurant. We would not go as a destination but if we were passing through we would stay again.

Rick E.

Yelp
It's a very old, once iconic, motel. The room was clean and serviceable, but not worth $109. The real issue was with the restaurant. You supposedly get a free breakfast with your room. What you get is a waitress slapping down a menu on the table, and disappearing. We waited for water, got none. We would have liked coffee....... actually would have like to talked to the waitress again. But after waiting for awhile, and getting no acknowledgement, we got up and left. I don't recommend this motel to anyone.

Anna L.

Yelp
Really nice motel, clean, comfy beds, cool space age modern decor, good restaurant attached with breakfast vouchers. We will stay again on way home. One of the best. Friendly staff at check in.

Jason M.

Yelp
Had to stay here for 16 days with a group of 12, this hotel should not be allowed to use the Best Western name! All 12 of us had made our reservations in the same week in Nov, all for the same dates, and not one of us had the same rate...then being a military group we had day and night shifts, the free meal coupon could not be used past noon, so half our guys missed out on this, and the management would not make an exception, they said it would mess up their paperwork and require extra work, so they opted to stick it to the Soldiers. So on to the rooms, they where all newer furnishings, but all where pretty filthy, things like hairs everywhere, and food particles on the floor. It took over a week to get mine vacuumed properly! The rooms all have large gaps around the doors and little bugs are common, they also have little window unit AC and heat that kind of works. But, the best part is the shower, when you first turn it on the water is brown, no BS, and after that clears it won't stay hot, goes hot cold, hot cold...this place is a joke, and It gets better, so to see if I can get a hot something I fill the tub (after the brown clears) and come back to it after a few minutes, well now the water is full of pebbles and dirt. I confirmed with the others in our group and this was standard for all rooms. Overall worst hotel I've ever stayed in, even if your just passing through I would highly advise going a bit further to Casa Grande, Goodyear, or Yuma depending on your direction. Plus it's a very expensive hotel, $99-129 a night is the norm. I wish again they had a zero star on yelp for this place!

Jolly M.

Yelp
Don't make the mistake of thinking the Space Age Lodge is a good place to stay. This hotel is overpriced. Seriously overpriced. $165 for a small, 1 King bed room with a teeny, tiny, dated bathroom. Skimping on towels is just plain cheap. It's noisy. The hotel is sandwiched between the highway and a set of railroad tracks, with trains running all night. The hotel should give out earplugs upon check-in. The Direct TV Network is a joke. The only thing that was nice about the Space Age Lodge was the comfy bed. Breakfast is included. Not a buffet, but a limited menu of eggs, oatmeal, or pancakes. OK food if you're not a healthy eater. There isn't much choice of lodging in Gila Bend, but next time I'll continue down the road to find better accommodations at half the price.

Mark C.

Yelp
Carpet in the room I got should have been replaced years ago. AC worked well but was louder than a jet plane. Place is a good example of how you cannot find a decent hotel anymore for under a $100 or even $150. Was probably decent decades ago but like all hotels now--except the really pricey ones--is not kept up well at all. Declining margins yeah I get, it but these place are now for truckers and low income travelers. Overall: yucky.

Rich L.

Yelp
Just spent the nite here at the Space Age Lodge. Great place to stay. Been wanting to stay here for many years. It finally fell in the right place on a trip, heading home from TX. I like this place. It's clean, neat and they've done a good job of keeping it updated. Front Desk Clerk Lorena went way out of her way to help correct my error in the reservation. She was extremely helpful. Had dinner at the attached Space Age Dinner. Great food. We had Mexican and salad bar. If Gila Bend is ever at a good stopping point, this is a place to stay. In looking over other reviews, I did not experience any of the negatives mentioned. I would stay here anytime.

Kate A.

Yelp
Rooms were clean, prices are very reasonable with AAA discount. Breakfast is free and reasonably good. People were warm and welcoming. Nice theme. We had fun.

Mikey R.

Yelp
I've wanted to come here since I was a child in the back seat of my parents' car driving between Phoenix and San Diego. My parents aren't the adventurous type. Anyway I went into the diner with low expectations. It's a pit stop in a small town with a kitschy theme- it doesn't need to be good. BUT! It wasn't bad. Onion rings were decent, apple pie was fresh - and it wasn't CRAZY expensive. Not many options for a pescetarian though.

Belle G.

Yelp
You really go for the atmosphere. Foods not bad. Think diner. The art is fun and i really like the plates and coffee cups. Take some pictures in space.

Jayson J.

Yelp
This is hands down the best roadside motel experience I've ever had. This is the best western on steroids. First off the basics. Rooms are clean, well kept, beds are comfy, pillows soft, nice functional bathroom, dark curtains for good sleep long into the late morning. But that's not why this place is so awesome. They have a space theme and they have it like you've never seen it before. Hand painted space murals on the walls, neon lit flying saucer landing atop the lobby, fascinating space photography in each room. Trust me the list goes on. I thought I was staying at the international space station not the best western. I will stay here each and every chance I get.

Alexa L.

Yelp
This hotel is disgusting do you not stay here they do not clean their rooms every day they leave them as is and when you go in you will find you have rats in there bugs in there it's disgusting and it stinks please just take the extra 30 minutes and drive to Buckeye if you're passing through this is not OK but the customer service was a one because they gave me a full refund love them for that

L M.

Yelp
Fantastic night, couldn't ask for a more clean and comfortable room. The front desk staff not only made eye contact but they were actually super friendly and helpful - a rarity these days!! Free breakfast the next morning at the Space Age Restaurant was a full, more than I could eat, breakfast. Will definitely stay here again in my travels from CA to TX.

Denise H.

Yelp
Clean, tastefully remodeled (in spite of it's quirky theme ) comfortable bed. Great tub for a hot soak. Sink/vanity in room so that one of us can be in the shower and the other at the sink. Super friendly check in. Pet friendly with a fee. I gave only four stars because the original room in which we were assigned the heater/ac unit had an extremely loud fan. Desk clerk called to ask if our room was satisfactory. When I told her about the fan she immediately offered to change our room. Took her up on it. New room was great. We had dinner at the restaurant. My Rueben, fries/onion rings was great. Husband's chicken fried steak just so so. Good service if a bit slow. Breakfast was a limited menu but very good. My opinion: a great find.

April M.

Yelp
VERY CLEAN MODERN ROOMS AND HOTEL HAS POOL! AFFORDABLE RESTAURANT CONNECTED TO MOTEL. ASK FOR DESTINY THOUGH FOR GREAT SERVICE! She was a breath of fresh air for our family after being stuck road side @114deg out when we were so close.....only an hour 55 min from home. She helped us to see some good in our situation, got my boys to laugh & quick service. We broke down on the freeway leaving SanDiego CA, to Tucson,AZ ended up in this town(Gilabend I-80 AZ) ! Can't say enough good things about the people there! Hotel clerk, who's name I missed was just as nice & helpful. We won't forget this town. IF YOU NEED TO STOP DO SO HERE! Kids will thank you! The thick crisp pillows & light down comforters will lull you to sleep quickly. Ps: you even got a remote for your AC!! We left in the early am hours so we didn't get to go back to their restaurant sadly, have work & two boys in school. We were hoping to thank Destiny again. Maybe on our next trip to Oregon that we try to do every year? Thanks to everyone in that town for all your help! Destiny thank you again, sorry we missed you. April Walker , Matt & the boys!

Nancy P.

Yelp
Hubs booked this kitschy place for us because, well - the other options in the-middle-of-nowhere-AZ were very slim and besides, who doesn't want to stay in motel called Space Age Lodge? And man! So surprised! I thought we'd be staying in a very outdated motel room. I mean let's face it, most motels that claim "newly remodeled" usually just put in a new tv. But when we opened the door we found new furniture, a very plush bed, new lighting, flat screen tv and a rather large and new "mini" fridge. It was really nice - compared to other Best Western's I've visited. The train is right behind the hotel, but to be honest, the A/C was cranking the entire time we were there (Arizona in June) so we could hardly hear it. And to top it off - we got free breakfast! Not just a continental one either. We had our pick of any breakfast entree and beverage. Came out to a little over $20 of free food! Basically made the room rate $60. Yeah for the UFO place!!!

Alex W.

Yelp
We stayed here on our trip across the country. I was a little cautious about the description, but since there wasn't much else around, we decided to try it. What a treat! The room was clean, modern, and very inviting. The bed was extremely comfortable after a long day of driving. And you have to admit - it is a hoot staying in a place that boasts a space-theme! The free breakfast is in the restaurant next door, which is equally interesting. I had the flying saucer pancakes and, I must admit, they are better than the ones my father used to make - a mighty feat indeed. The coffee was fresh and hot. The server was fun and told us that the chef had been there for years - which is obvious by how much love and attention he put into our meals! We will absolutely return to this hotel if we pass through the area again and we have already recommended it to our friends and family.

Mark C.

Yelp
Was just an ok place, AC did not work well in the room. We paid $111.00 for one night. The temp was 115 degrees on our arrival. They did give us tickets for breakfast at the restaurant next-door. This is not the cleanest location but again just okay. It's fairly dated inside. 1 star at best.

Vivienne E.

Yelp
Wanted to stay in Gila Bend on our way to Sedona. Everything as expected and so much more. Clean rooms, friendly helpful staff, and an outstanding, freshly made full breakfast at the restaurant is included. Can't wait to go back!

William F.

Yelp
We landed for cheap gas at the Gila Bend airport but it was so hot that our airplane wouldn't start up again. The friendly and helpful staff at the Best Western saved our bacon ... the restaurant manager personally drove out to the couple of miles to the airport to pick us up for lunch ... which turned into an overnight stay when afternoon thunderstorms blocked our route to the West, and then a dust storm rolled past town. Rooms were like an oasis: quiet, cool, and spacious. As temps neared 110, the kids and I took full advantage the pool, which was attractive, clean, and inviting, and seems to be optimized for elderly snowbirds, with its strongly textured bottom and pool lift. The restaurant itself was kind of a diner format, with above-par food that we enjoyed for both lunch and breakfast. The space theme throughout was tastefully executed (and actually appropriate for us, having flown to Gila Bend straight from Roswell) and added to our enjoyment with the kids. For dinner, we walked across the street to check out the Italian place where Prince Harry used to go when he was stationed at the nearby air base. I must have asked too many impertinent questions about the Prince, because Little Italy didn't treat us nearly as well as the Best Western did. Granted, it is unlikely that we will be back in Gila Bend soon, BUT if we ever are I will return here for sure.

Amy Michelle Mosier M.

Yelp
The owners obviously care about the hotel because it's in pristine condition, everything from the pool, to the parking lot to the rooms. Not a single room number has fallen off or is dangling from the door. The lobby you walk into is a giant UFO. You can't do that at Disneyland. Come on. They have a restaurant attached to it for your convenience with excellent food. Make sure you are just passing through Gila Bend because there's not much to do. There is the Oatman Museum down the street that tells the true story of a white women that was kidnapped by the Mojave Indians and they tatooed her all over her face. By the time the authorities found her, she had forgotten most of her English. Tragic. My issue was not with the train. I didn't even hear it. I was awakened by a rooster from the other side of the tracks around 3 AM. The tiny bathroom window wouldn't have allowed me to throw my shoe at the damn thing. I can confirm that the UFO is parked here for all to see. They say that you can see demons in Gila Bend but I didn't see any.

Citlali G.

Yelp
5 stars for me!! Good price and they give free breakfast. We just stayed one night but worth every penny. The room was nice and clean and comfy beds very happy.

Phillip S.

Yelp
Great place to stay while on a cross country drive. Front desk was awesome, even let us look at the rooms before booking and staying the night. Breakfast the next morning was good. Definitely recommend staying here.

Mike J.

Yelp
The hotel is outdated by any means. However, the theme of the hotel is exciting. If your a space enthusiasts or just like to stay in 50s style motor lodges this is your place. There's an old 50s style diner connected to the hotel with a small offering of gift ideas. The breakfast that is included in your stay is one of the best I've had. As I was having my breakfast I thought I was in one of those old time movies. The atmosphere is about the same. The staff go outta there way to insure you have everything you need while not being to fussy about it. The rooms are a bit overpriced as it shouldn't cost that much for the experience. I keep looking for that elusive fallout shelter you'd expect to see but non to be found. All in all its a nice place to stay the night. I don't think I'd want to spend an extended stay there. As I have done. There's just not much to do in the area. I find myself driving back to the Phoenix area for things to occupy my time.

Julie P.

Yelp
Best theme hotel! I'd driven past this for years and this time I had a chance to stay. Very clean rooms, professional staff, and yummy restaurant.

Yelp
I don't know about the lodge, but I love the cafe and coffee shop. I have visited several times in between Alien Abductions, and always enjoy it. Their cups and saucers are for sale and are made in the USA. Go USA! Try the enchiladas.
