Disappointing First Experience with Sonder — Platinum Status Not Recognized
I recently stayed at the Beverly Terrace Hotel by Sonder in Los Angeles, which was my first experience with the Sonder brand now under the Marriott portfolio. As a longtime Platinum Elite member, I’m loyal to Marriott and typically book stays that allow me to fully benefit from the perks that come with that status. Unfortunately, this property did not deliver on that front.
The first red flag was needing to download a completely separate Sonder app to manage the stay. While I appreciated the convenience of mobile access and keyless entry via codes, it was frustrating to have to use a standalone platform rather than the Marriott Bonvoy app. All communication, check-in, and support is routed through Sonder’s app—making it feel like an Airbnb experience rather than a Marriott property.
One of the main reasons I stay loyal to Marriott is the reliability of status perks like early check-in and guaranteed late check-out. I was told early check-in was unavailable, only to later be told I couldn’t get a late check-out either—because someone else had an early check-in. As a Platinum member, I expect (and have come to rely on) 4 p.m. late check-out. At this property, 1 p.m. was the best they could do. That was a major disappointment.
As for the hotel itself, it’s more of a repainted motel than a true renovation. I stayed in Room 12 and would strongly advise against it—it’s directly beneath the main stairwell, has minimal natural light, and faces the courtyard entrance. This made the room feel dark and exposed, with people walking by at all hours. I had to keep the curtains closed the entire stay, and the noise (including a crying baby daily) made it hard to relax or sleep.
There’s not really on-site staff, so don’t expect traditional hotel support or service. For travelers who prefer self-service and are used to Airbnb-style stays, this might be appealing. But for Marriott loyalists who value elite recognition and the amenities that typically come with it, this property falls short.
The only real upside here is the location—central and walkable. But overall, this experience made it clear to me that Sonder isn’t a fit for those who value their Marriott status. I won’t be staying with Sonder again.
