13 Places That Honor Sporting Legends

"Philip K. Wrigley began the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) in 1943, as many male athletes were fighting in World War II. The AAGPBL was at the forefront of women’s professional sports.  The Rockford Peaches were one of the teams that operated during the first year of the league and played at Beyer Stadium, nicknamed the “Peach Orchard.” Although the league disbanded in 1954, Rockford won four league championships including the first “three-peat” in 1948, 1949, and 1950. Beyer Stadium was used for several other local events and by the Rockford High School football team. The stadium fell into a state of disrepair in the 1980s and was demolished in the 1990s.  Thanks to the movie, A League of Their Own released in 1992, interest in the Rockford Peaches revived. Local restaurants and shops began carrying Peaches themed merchandise, and in 2010, a new baseball diamond was dedicated on the site of Beyer Stadium. Several living AAGPBL members threw out a few ceremonial pitches.  Today, visitors can walk along the diamond, pass through the original gatehouse, read the historical plaques, and sit in dugouts with pictures of AAGPBL players as they were back in the original stadium. On some Saturdays, visitors can even catch a free game by the Rockford Starfires women’s baseball team." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Cool piece of history not only from a baseball perspective but from the Hollywood movie. Abut what you’d expect a ballpark to look like. It’s nice it’s still being used and enjoyed.

If you liked the movie, this place is a must-visit! Admittedly, visitors will have to use some imagination to recreate the cinematic scenes as the field and stadium have changed over time, but for me, that was part of the fun. While the stadium is still used in a women's hardball league (how cool is that?!), the ticket booth is original to when the Peaches played there, and there is the remnant of a dirt running track where an Olympian once competed before running alongside Jesse Owens in 1936. History is so much fun!

Awesome historic place, but was bummed that they looked like they were digging it up! Hopefully they were renovating it.

Beyer Peaches Stadium is the original location that the Rockford Peaches played baseball- what a cool piece of history! Though the original stadium no longer exists; there is a ball field, some history placards, and the original ticket booth. If you can't make it to the Midway Village Museum, this is a great spot to read up on Peaches history. The field was being watered during our visit, which tells me its well-maintained (you can also tell just by looking at it). The dugouts have murals memorializing the Peaches, very neat!

Lots of history on this little field, information kiosk along a nice pathway tells you the history of the location.

Such a cool place to visit. As a fan of A League of Their Own this was a must stop place for me in Rockford. The grounds are kept up and it’s a beautiful place to walk around. Worth checking out as this is a big part of American History.
