The Best New Hotels in the World: 2019 Hot List

"At first glance, Bhutan Spirit Sanctuary, which opened its gilded doors last August in the heart of Paro, is very similar to the kingdom’s original luxury hotels. Like Aman and COMO, which both debuted in 2004, the hotel takes its design cues from traditional dzong—fortresses with whitewashed stone walls and flared roofs. Bhutanese hot stone baths are a centerpiece of the spa and cultural activities include lessons in archery, the national sport. But where Aman and COMO facilitate country-hopping around Bhutan’s five major valleys—Thimphu, Gangtey, Bumthang, Punakha, and Paro—via a circuit of luxury hotels, Bhutan Spirit Sanctuary wants guests to stay put and journey inward with an all-inclusive model that includes spa treatments. The 24-room resort caters to wellness junkies who want a dose of culture along with their farm-fresh food and meditation sessions. Rooms, the smallest of which are 580 square feet (double the size of COMO Uma Paro’s standard rooms), all have views of the historic Eutok Samdrup Choeling Monastery; a copy of The Restful Mind sits bedside in case the view alone doesn’t facilitate a meditative state. Upon arrival, guests perform a butter lamp ceremony and then meet with one of the Sanctuary’s traditional Bhutanese doctors. After he reads your pulse and observes your tongue, he’ll prescribe a customized program that might entail monk-led meditation, a soak in a hot stone bath, and daily kunye (Tibetan massage). Call it a new recipe for Bhutan’s famous state of happiness. FLASH POINT Bhutan is known as the Land of Medicinal Herbs. Join your spa therapist on a foraging excursion around the grounds and collect ingredients for your hot compress treatment. +11-975-827-2224; bhutanspiritsanctuary.com; doubles from around $668, all-inclusive." - CNT Editors

This was my first-ever solo trip, and Bhutan Spirit Sanctuary made it the best of all my firsts. From the moment I arrived, I was surrounded by warmth, care, and a quiet attention to every detail. ||The entire team goes above and beyond, from daily laundry and perfectly arranged picnics to protein goodies for treks and soulful wellness treatments that made each day truly meaningful. Generously spacious spotless rooms, the wellness-inspired meals were delicious, crafted with thought and love. Ms. Soh and the entire team have all my heart.||A very special thank you to Pema, my guide throughout the journey. His warmth, patience, and thoughtfulness made every experience even more special. From arranging treks and sharing stories to ensuring I was comfortable every step of the way, Pema truly made this trip unforgettable. He now feels like family. ||Bhutan Spirit Sanctuary isn’t just a hotel; it’s an all-inclusive experience at the most serene and silent location. They welcomed me home, and I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’m genuinely homesick!! ||I leave with a heart full of gratitude and memories I will cherish forever. Cannot wait to return.

From the very first moment of contact, our experience with Bhutan Spirit Sanctuary was exceptional. Before our stay, communication with miss Cleven was outstanding, she thoughtfully helped us with every question and went above and beyond to make our honeymoon even more special.||We spent eight nights in total, six at the beginning and two at the end of our journey (late September to mid-October), and from start to finish, our stay was simply amazing. The hotel describes itself as a boutique retreat where staff and guests form one family, and that is exactly how we felt throughout our time here.||For our honeymoon, we received a wonderful upgrade to a Terrace Suite overlooking the valley and the monastery on the opposite hill. The room was bright, spacious, and serene, with beautiful open doors to the terrace, a large bathroom with two sinks, a lovely bathtub, and a perfect shower.||The spa is beyond anything we have ever experienced, truly world-class. Every day you can choose a different treatment, all included in your stay. We deeply enjoyed the massages, the hot-stone baths, and the traditional moxibustion therapy. On the first day, we had a consultation with the traditional medicine doctor, who immediately and accurately identified our physical tendencies and recommended the best treatments for us. It was such a unique and memorable experience.||During our stay, we explored Bhutan with our wonderful guide Pema and driver Namgay, and we could not have wished for a better duo. After just a day or two, we developed a warm and genuine connection with both of them, and now that we’re home, we truly miss their company. Together, we visited the Haa Valley (with a picnic near grazing cows and friendly dogs), the Chele La Pass, Paro Valley with the National Museum, and of course the Tiger’s Nest hike. We also enjoyed many delicious local meals at Pema and Namgay’s favorite restaurants, visited stunning temples, monasteries, and nunneries, and even attended the Tashichho Dzong festival in Thimphu. They even introduced us to the local sport of archery.||A heartfelt thank-you to everyone in the restaurant and service team, your warmth, attention, and care made every meal and moment feel special. And especially to Miss Soh, the General Manager during our stay, her authenticity and kindness made us feel truly part of the Sanctuary family. We also learned how to make our own momo's and chili cheese, something which we will both enjoy again and and again at home. ||We absolutely loved the food at the Spirit Sanctuary, both the Bhutanese, Indian and international cuisine, both at the hotel and during our excursions. Every meal felt like a celebration of local flavors and hospitality.||In short, this was one of the very best hotel experiences we have ever had. We stayed at other high-end properties in Bhutan as well, but none came close to the atmosphere, service, and sense of belonging we felt at the Bhutan Spirit Sanctuary.||If you are planning a trip to Bhutan, this is the place to stay in Paro. It is not just a hotel, it’s a place that nourishes your mind, body, and soul, and welcomes you as part of its family.

Our stay at Bhutan Spirit Sanctuary felt like a dream. The property is both beautiful and authentic. We received such a warm welcome upon arrival and immediately felt at home, as if we were part of a family. The food was amazing: always fresh, healthy, and full of flavor.||A special thanks to Miss Soh for making our stay so memorable with the best guest experience we could imagine. We loved the Bhutanese dinner in traditional clothes and the cooking workshop. The wellness treatments were another highlight, especially the hot stone bath (highly recommended after visiting the Tiger’s Nest!), as well as the massages and meditations.||Our room was spacious, spotless, and beautifully designed, with a stunning view of the monastery. ||We also want to thank our wonderful guide, Pema, for taking us to incredible sights each day, from a Bhutanese festival to Tiger’s Nest, beautiful hikes, and cultural activities.||We truly enjoyed every moment of our stay at Bhutan Spirit Sanctuary. The staff are all so warm and humble. Thank you to each of you for making our time here unforgettable!

A Truly Exceptional Retreat at Bhutan Spirit Sanctuary||From the very first moment, I knew this would be a special stay. The manager and head chef personally greeted me at the door along with members of the warm, welcoming staff—a gesture that set the tone for everything that followed.||What makes Bhutan Spirit Sanctuary unique is how truly all-inclusive it is. Every meal—breakfast, lunch, and dinner—is included, along with all drinks. If you are away during mealtime, they thoughtfully prepare a beautifully packed meal for you, your guide, and your driver. Even laundry is included, making it easy to relax fully without the usual travel worries.||Each day, I enjoyed complimentary treatments that ranged from deeply relaxing massages to other rejuvenating therapies. A highlight was the consultation with the on-site Bhutanese medicine doctor, who thoughtfully shares insights into traditional healing and wellness practices.||The facilities are outstanding. Beyond the spa, there is a lap pool and a well-equipped gym, so you can balance active movement with deep relaxation. There’s also plenty to do on the grounds: archery, Bhutanese cooking classes, and peaceful spaces to simply rest or reflect. Guided tours can be arranged easily through the sanctuary, making it effortless to explore Bhutan’s cultural treasures during the day.||In-room comforts are equally thoughtful. Tea and coffee service is always complimentary, and the spacious rooms come with safes for valuables, making it both secure and home-like. And if your schedule runs late, it’s never a concern—services and dining hours flex generously, with activities and meal options available as late as 10:00 pm.||A special note of thanks to Operational Manager Soh Chia Hwa, whose leadership and attention to detail ensure everything runs with warmth and excellence.||Everything about this retreat is designed with care to make the guest experience seamless, restorative, and memorable. Bhutan Spirit Sanctuary isn’t just a place to stay—it’s a holistic, luxurious retreat where every detail is handled with genuine hospitality. They truly go above and beyond to create an atmosphere of peace, relaxation, and well-being.||I can’t recommend it highly enough.||⸻

We recently completed a memorable 5 night stay at this beautiful retreat. We were made to feel welcome from the moment we stepped inside, and made to feel nothing was too much trouble. Our suite was spacious, well appointed and comfortable, with a beautiful view of the nearby monastery, and Valley below. We were treated to an insightful briefing from the Buddhist doctor, and spa treatments every day, including the traditional hot stone bath. Meals 3 times a day were wonderfully prepared, featuring fresh on-site produce and Bhutanese specialities. Snacks and picnic packs were prepared for us, our guide and driver. Our boots were cleaned after our Tiger's Nest hike. As special as the Bhutan Spirit Sanctuary is, the thoughtfulness, sincerity, hospitality and generosity of the staff were exceptional. Our farewell surprise gift of individualised Bhutanese stamps were touching. The Sanctuary definitely stands head and shoulders above the many other properties we have stayed at throughout the world. We heartily recommend Bhutan Spirit Sanctuary, and greatly wish to return.

My husband and I stayed here during the end of April. We came across Bhutan Spirit Sanctuary from another persons itinerary and once I had seen the pictures I knew that I wanted to have our elopement ceremony there. We knew it was going to be in Bhutan but didn’t know where yet.||Juliane helped us in preparing for the ceremony and organized everything. She knew the right questions to ask and she made us feel excited and trusting in the process. She is truly amazing! Her hospitality was everything. I want to also thank all of the staff for their kindness, hospitality and paying attention to detail. They also made the stay incredible on our special day and the room decorated was a nice surprise. Again- the staff here is incredible. The monks that blessed us were so kind and you could feel their presence. The day of our ceremony the guests were gone on their activities and we felt like we had the whole place to ourselves to roam around and take it all in.||The services provided at Bhutan Spirit Sanctuary were also incredible- some of the best treatments that we’ve ever had; massages, etc. The pool there is very relaxing and is such a great place to unwind. The food was delicious and the tea bar included some of the best teas I have ever had.||This place will remain ever so special and it was everything we could have dreamed for. I hope we can return again 🤍🤍🤍

My husband and I had a wonderful stay at the Bhutan Spirit Sanctuary during our honeymoon in Bhutan earlier this year. It is a magnificent property with beautiful views and spacious rooms. We were immediately mesmerized by the architecture upon arriving and how peaceful the atmosphere was. The manager is very attentive and makes sure you have everything that you need. They offer a large variety of teas and I made sure to try a new one each meal. There are also a bunch of amenities and activities that are included with your stay, including a hot stone herbal bath, massages, sound healing, a consultation with a doctor trained in traditional Bhutanese medicine, and more. We would have loved to do the Bhutanese cooking class here if we had more time. At the beginning of your stay when you first check in, they take a photo of you and print it on real Bhutan stamps that they gift to you when you check out. This was such a sweet and personal touch. Bhutan Spirit Sanctuary was the final hotel of our honeymoon trip and we could not have asked for a better place to end it.
