A Tour of the World's Most Delightful Domes

"Many replicas of great buildings are comically small, or they are built in a kitschy fashion almost mocking the original. The Bibi Ka Maqbara in Maharashtra, India does neither of those things. It is itself a grand maqbara, meaning “holy tomb” in Arabic, with inlaid walls and marble screens, surrounded by turrets and a reflecting pool. But it is small compared to the inspiration, theTaj Mahal in Agra, over 1000 miles to the north. Known as the “poor man’s Taj Mahal” or the “mini Taj”, like the original it is a monument built in memory of love lost. In this case it was a mother’s love, rather than a wife’s, that inspired Prince Azam Shah to build the structure between 1651 and 1661. The mini Taj was erected less than 30 years after the original, composed of slightly more modest building materials, with limestone and plaster as well as marble under the all-marble onion dome. Marble was abundant in northern India, near Jaipur where the Taj Mahal was built. In order to build the Bibi Ka Maqbara, the marble had to hauled on carts to the new capital of the Mughal empire. The construction took only 6 years, compared to the 22 years for the Taj Mahal. The grounds cover 458 x 275 meters of gardens. At the center of the building is the lone tomb of Rabia-ul-Daurani, third wife of the emperor, and mother of the architect. It may lack some of the staggering size and grandeur of the original, but it does not attract the millions of visitors, or the strict guards who threaten to remove the film from the cameras if you dare take a picture. The mini-Taj exudes its own more humble charm." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Must-Visit Architectural Marvel! Often referred to as the "Taj of the Deccan," Bibi Ka Maqbara is a stunning monument that captures the elegance of Mughal architecture. While it was inspired by the Taj Mahal, it has a unique charm of its own that is deeply rooted in the history of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. The Experience: Visual Beauty: The main mausoleum, with its white marble and intricate carvings, looks spectacular against the backdrop of the surrounding hills. Garden & Layout: The "Charbagh" style garden is well-maintained and provides a peaceful atmosphere for a leisurely walk. The reflection of the monument in the central water channel makes for incredible photographs. Atmosphere: It’s much less crowded than the Taj in Agra, allowing you to actually sit and appreciate the craftsmanship and the quiet dignity of the place. Practical Tips: Best Time to Visit: Aim for early morning (around 7:00 AM) to avoid the heat and the crowds, or late afternoon to catch the sunset when the marble glows with a golden hue. Photography: This is a photographer's paradise. The symmetry of the minarets and the arched doorways offer perfect frames. Guide: Consider hiring a local guide at the entrance if you want to learn about the history of Azam Shah and his mother, Rabia-ud-Daurani. Final Verdict: Whether you are a history buff, an architecture lover, or just traveling with family, this monument is the pride of Sambhajinagar. It is well worth the entry fee and a few hours of your time.

A must visit spot in Aurangabad Even if you only have a few hours, this place is perfect for spending some quality time. The entry fee is ₹25 if purchased offline and ₹20 if booked online. I’ll recommend to take online tickets as there was long queue for tickets even on weekday, the day i visited. Though it is often called a replica of Agra’s Taj Mahal, it has its own unique charm because of its surroundings. For a bit of history: the monument was commissioned by Aurangzeb in memory of his first wife and later completed by his son, Azam Shah. Aurangzeb was the son of Shah Jahan, the emperor who built the original Taj Mahal.

My visit to Bibi Ka Maqbara in Aurangabad turned out to be an unforgettable experience. Popularly known as the “Mini Taj Mahal,” this beautiful monument was built by Azam Shah as a tribute to his mother, Dilras Banu Begum. While it draws inspiration from the Taj Mahal, the structure possesses a distinct grace and charm that highlight the splendor of Mughal architecture in the Deccan. The moment the monument came into view—with its elegant minarets and gleaming white dome—I was instantly captivated. The finely crafted marble work, the balanced architectural design, and the tranquil gardens surrounding the complex create a peaceful and regal setting. Walking along the main pathway, I was struck by the exquisite detailing on the arches and walls, a true reflection of the craftsmanship of that era. What stood out even more was the excellent upkeep of the monument. The premises are clean, the management is smooth, and the gardens offer excellent photography spots, especially during sunrise and sunset. Exploring Bibi Ka Maqbara felt like entering a chapter of history, witnessing the enduring love of a son for his mother carved in stone. Though more modest in scale compared to the Taj Mahal, it carries a similar emotional essence and cultural richness. It is undoubtedly a place worth visiting for anyone who values history, architecture, or heritage.
