3 Best Day Trips From Cape Town

"The view, the view, the view: You clamber down below the cliff's edge to Bientang's Cave, a restaurant built into the rock face. The vantage point is epic: You're hovering above the water. As for the cooking: It's not terrible, but it's perfectly mediocre. Still, you didn't come here for the food, did you? This is a great place to end a day spent whale-watching: a gorgeous setting where you can admire the sunset before you start plotting your next adventure." - Sarah Khan

A must experience if you are visiting Hermanus . You have to make a reservation as they get fully booked quickly, especially during the peak summer months . This is a tourist place , so the prices are high for us locals . Starters begin at R180 ..upwards for example. You can sit up in the cave ...or on the rocks itself right next to the ocean . Tables are spread from each other so you have peace and quiet to just listen to the ocean waves . Be warned ⚠️ wear comfy shoes , there are 51 steps going down a steep incline ..that is the only way to the restaurant no short cuts unfortunately . It does get windy ..you are right on the ocean after all , so do take a jacket with in case . I had the cape malay sea food potjie was served with rice and poppoddum, price R265 served in a little potjie pot. It was delicious, it was not hot spicy but had flavor , which is rare these days when people serve their version of curry , friends had the chicken and prawn potjie R265 and the battered hake with veg ..the battered hake was R175 ..also nicely prepared , crisp tempura batter on it not oily at all . Service was friendly and efficient . I have to take my hat off tk the waiters who have to walk up and down those steps constantly to serve us . Overall a lovely experience..especially for a special occasion ..I would think even a great venue to have an intimate beach side wedding.

I was very excited to experience this cave restaurant and its awesome views. Food - Not alot of options on the menu. We kept in easy and simple with a hake and chips and a beef burger. Both our items were good. Prices are on the higher side. Service - Friendly helpful staff, not much to say here. Good job. Atmosphere - Amazing view. Bench seats are uncomfortable but practical. The stairs on the way down with test your knees and ankles. Beware.😅 I will not return but was a good experience for us and recommend for others.

We had a dinner booking for a Saturday evening at 18:00 and were seated on the deck overlooking the sea — a perfect spot to enjoy the sunset. The restaurant itself is uniquely set inside a cave, adding to the charm and atmosphere of the evening. My partner and I shared the seafood platter for two, priced at R890. It included tiger prawns, fish, calamari, mussels, chips, and rice. The portion size was just right for both of us, and everything tasted fresh. While it is on the pricier side compared to a standard seafood platter, you’re also paying for the stunning views and the overall experience. A truly unique dining experience — I’d definitely recommend a visit!

Went for an early lunch and got the seafood platter. The seafood was really good and the views were even better. Great service and conversation with the staff too. If I come back to Hermanus I’ll be back for sure

Great views, good vibes and good service but the food let me down. We started well with the calamari starter. I then ordered the pork belly and it was dull, lacking flavour and hugely disappointing. The sauce that was supposed to accompany it did not arrive, leaving me with a very mediocre taste experience for the main. I do however appreciate that when I brought it to the attention of the server, he informed the manager who took time to come chat and explain that the sauce meant for the meal was not available on this day. 100 points for that level of care. The creme brulee desert and later the small discount offered helped but I still left feeling like I did not get the full experience I wanted.

We ordered the seafood platter — the taste was good, but the presentation could’ve been better. Service was just okay, nothing special, but the view truly makes up for it. Dining right by the ocean, with waves crashing nearby, is such a unique and beautiful experience. Worth a visit for the setting alone!

From the outset these kinds of places look like a typical tourist trap with sub par food and service because of the location and whale spotting, but this was definitely not my experience. We shared the Perlemoen bitteballen. Crunchy and fishy. Great start. At this point we spotted a whale breaching and it was honestly the most incredible experience of my life! For mains I had the Hake and Chips. Maybe I was still hypnotized by the whale but this was honestly the best freakin hake of my life!!! It was perfectly flaky, the batter was not your typical beer batter. It was thin and crunchy and such a nice contrast to the flakiness of the hake. Also, the portions were oh so generous!! I was very happy. Our waiter was also very jovial and provided great service. I would definitely recommend if you’re going to watch whales this season.

Stop off on a Monday, after a walk on the Clidd Path. Lots of tourists around. The weather was a sunny still winters day. The view is fabulous from this venue, and a few southern right whales made an appearance. Of you visit from August you should see quite a lot of them. The restaurant is a cave carved by the sea over millenia. Bientang was said to be the last Khoi Strandloper to make this her home living off the sea, and her vegetable garden. I had a cocktail, referred by the waiter, very tasty, we had a chicken salad which was well presented and delicious. Our little yorkie was welcomed and she had a great time exploring. This is probably the best view restaurant in the whole of Hermanus in my opinion.
