Belgian Beers Explained: From Trappist Ales to Fruit Beers - AFAR

"A producer associated with the strong, dark quadrupel category; its quadrupel is described as a frothy, full-bodied ale with orange and banana-bread notes, representing the intense, high-ABV end of Belgian-style ales." - Tim Chester

Stopped here to have trappist beer and Abbey cheese in the tasting room. The inside was large with many tables. We got flights, cheese platter and than a few more beers. The staff were very nice. There's a store on the way out to buy beer to-go and other souvenirs. Free parking. Would recommend a visit!

💚💚💚 Highly recommended 💚💚💚 Simply grateful to visit this vibrant green place on a beautiful sunny day! 😊 The instructor, Tony, is hilarious and kept everyone laughing. 😄 I’m delighted to have learned the story behind the bottle of beer, adding depth to the experience of drinking. ☺️ I chose the Quadrupel, the highest in alcohol percentage, and it did not disappoint. Absolutely loved it! 🍻 Biking around the brewery was also fantastic. I loved all the green vibes. 😊

If you're interested in beer, history, and charity with no boundaries, then I would highly recommend visiting here. They offer tours in English in the morning where you learn the history of the monks, get to witness their brewing and bottling operation, and then experience it for yourself at the end of the tour. Our tour guide was friendly, jovial, knowledgeable, and a perfect host during our time there. I regrettably forget his name, but he was a gentleman. The weather was perfect, so we sat outside their tasting room in the beer garden and sampled their fantastic menu of food and drinks. I cannot recommend this place enough and don't forget to visit their gift shop for all kinds of handmade products.

We visited La Trappe and did the tour and lunch after. We had a reservation ahead of time and glad we did as I believe the tour was full. The tour is a great way to learn about the monastery and brewery operations. And a way to see a little behind the scenes. And after learning quite a bit you get a beer! I didn’t know that the keg/draft and bottled beers were different and it was cool to get to compare them (and even better at the source). The tour guide was funny and informative. The restaurant is large with a good amount of seating inside and out. The menu has many tasty sounding dishes. The food was good not great. The mustard served with my cheese plate was probably my favorite thing. There is a store onsite that sells way more things that I was expecting. Along with the glasses and beer, they sell chocolate, honey, the tasty mustard, soaps and lotions, and cheese. Overall it’s definitely worth a visit if you’re interested in beer or a lunch in pretty setting.

Second time here. And I’ll always come back. The place is beautiful, the tour is very interesting, the food is delicious and the beer… oh, the beer… ❤️ I recommend the tour and the bitterbalen (traditional Dutch croquete). And don’t miss the store. Amazing!!!

The excursion of the on-site brewing facilities is a must for beer, specifically Trappist beer, lovers :)) get ready to be charmed by the light-hearted humor of the tour guide and settle in for some top notch food and snacks. Note: Only one English tour per day. Book in advance to avoid surprises ;)

Excellent comfort food and even better beer. Be sure to try the oak barrel aged quad they sell on site over a hot meal. Family and kid friendly for sure. Worth a trip out here and good hospitality. Take the tour if you can. Was the first stop on a beer adventure for us.

Yelp
Came here on a Saturday mid-day. Lovely Trappist monastery. There is a nice gift shop and also their tasting room and restaurant. The tasting room and restaurant is well situated in a lovely setting. Sadly we weren't able to book the tour but came for lunch and the beer. Had their tripel and it was very tasty. Had the hamburger and I wasn't sure what I was going to get or even why I ordered it, but I was somehow drawn to order this hamburger. I have had plenty of good and big hamburgers but I was shocked when this monster came out with a large beef patty in the middle with cheese and sauce dripping off it and the beef patty sitting on essentially a fresh mixed vegetable salad and all housed in a very nice bun. It was a small struggle to eat but very much worth the work as this masterpiece was delicious. Local grown beef and vegetables. Easily one of my favorite hamburgers. Service was helpful navigating the menu and options. Highly recommend for both the food and beer!

Yelp
Oh makers of lovely La Trappe Belgian style beer, even though I am home back in the states my heart fondly remains with you, and my stomach! The monastery has a pub on-site that not only provides a bevvy of delicious beers, made on the grounds of this fine religious institution but provides a variety of local and organically sourced meals. I had the local food sampler that was just lovely and besides beer they also make bread, butter and cheese. The beef is from local cows, managed by the institute and the chickens are from a local provider. I can only imagine whiling away an afternoon on a warm summer's day, in the large outside seating area but on a cold November day, the inside seating was just fine. I wasn't able to do the tour but if you are visiting Tilburg then try and get in a tour of the brewing facilities. Oh, and you can easily bike from Tilburg or, if I remember correctly, catch the 141 bus from the central train station. The buses seem to run about every hour so take that into account and on your way out, stop in the gift shop to pick up a few reminders of your visit. I hope to someday come back, lovely experience! :-)

Yelp
There are only two Trapist monasteries outside of Belgium, one being in Austria and one in the Netherlands where Boerderij de Koningshoeven resides. They make a half a dozen or beers. The La Trappe label is probably the well known name people will see and they have a dubbel, tripel, quadrupel, witte and oak aged quadrupel. I've had the regular qudrupel, which is 10% alcohol so it's pretty hefty. The continued yeast fermentation in the bottle gives it the unique nose and probably adds to the alcohol content. Not my normal preferred Trapist style of beer but good with your salty foods like pizza and grilled meats.

Yelp
I visited La Trappe a few years ago. I like beer but trappist beer is something else, it has muscle. I tried their dubbel and tripel but wasn't brave enough for the quadrupel(10%). It was all too much for this casual Früli drinker. The tour was interesting and was given in english. (Sidenote: Most Dutch can speak fluent english.) We were shown the process by which they make the beer, where they grow their hops and even the bottling plant in action followed by the tasting. If you're visiting Tilburg, enjoy beer and especially if you have a car(we went by bus but it was a long wait when we left), check out this little trappist brewery run by Dutch monks.

Yelp
"La Trappe" Trappist Monastery/brewery in Holland. Best trappist tour and nicest pub. I've been to all the trappists in Belgium so far. La Trappe has an excellent tour, biking distance from Tilburg (rent a bike!). Tour takes maybe 1.5 hours and usually includes samples depending on package you booked. Pub is lovely and they have a gift shop where you can buy some of their rarer or seasonal beers. Highly recommended.
