The Best Walking Tours of New York City (Updated 2025)

"I used Big Apple Greeter, which was founded in 1992 to connect visitors with local residents (not professional guides) who love sharing their favorite spots; tours typically last 2–4 hours. Because the service is free and very popular, spots fill up fast—book well in advance since they don’t accept reservations within 10 days of your desired date—and while there is a no-tipping policy, I recommend making a donation to support the program." - Matthew Kepnes

We had the best time exploring New York with Big Apple Greeter—huge thanks to our legendary hosts, Lester and Marc. From the very start, it felt less like a tour and more like two old friends casually showing us around their neighborhood… except their neighborhood just happens to be one of the most iconic cities in the world. Lester and Marc didn’t just take us to the big-ticket sights—they unlocked the real NYC. The hidden gems, the off-the-map stories, the places only true locals would know (and fiercely gatekeep if they weren’t so generous). Their knowledge of the city? Encyclopedic. Their delivery? 10/10 stand-up comedy meets history class, but in the best way possible. We laughed, we learned, we walked (a lot), and we left with hearts full, feet sore, and minds blown by how much more there is to this city than skyscrapers and selfies. Big Apple Greeter is an absolute gift, and if you’re lucky enough to get Lester and Marc—just cancel all other plans. You’re in for a New York experience that’s as real, rich, and ridiculously fun as it gets. Thanks for everything, guys—we’ll be back (with comfier shoes next time)!

Myself and my daughter where shown around today by Richard and I enjoyed every minute of it. We spent 7 hours with him and his knowledge was fabulous. I feel like we got so much out of it and seen things we otherwise would have missed. I highly recommend using these for you New York trip. It will make all the difference.

We were lucky enough to have George L as our host. We are here from Australia and it was great to have someone so knowledgeable about NYC. We loved George’s passion about his city. He was also generous, friendly and respectful of our needs. We would strongly recommend this tour and we hope you get paired with George as we loved seeing the city through his eyes. Liz and Michael. Today, we had a incredible day with our wonderful Big Apple Greeter, Eliot W. Eliot took us all over Manhattan, the financial district and Brooklyn. There were parts of New York we’d never have noticed, if it wasn’t for Eliot’s expert guidance and incredible knowledge of the city, he clearly loves very much. He’d put so much effort into our day, even before we left the UK and he made our day special and enjoyable.

We spent most of the day with Ben. He tailored a unique program for us. We learned a lot about different types of houses and life in NY on Manhattan and then we moved to Greenpoint and Williamsburg visiting at least 4 food stores each serving a unique dish and 3 breweries. We have seen places and neighborhoods we would not visit without him. He has also recommended us other places that we visited the other day and all were unique. I highly recommend to ask for a Greeter when you are visiting the NYC.

We had an amazing tour with Rich from Brooklyn. It was really fun! He walked with us for 5 hours over the Brooklyn Bridge and through Brooklyn Heights, explaining everything to us. It was great!
