My Top 9 Hostels in Sydney for 2025

"I like Big Hostel as a budget “boutique” option in Surry Hills — it has a roof terrace with beautiful city views, a sundeck with a garden for lounging and BBQing, a large kitchen, and 24/7 free coffee and tea. The rooms are huge and the pillows are super cozy, though the metal bed frames can creak so bring earplugs if you’re a light sleeper; beds have lockers for security. Keep in mind dorms are limited to ages 18–40 (older travelers require private rooms)." - Matthew Kepnes

This hostel is truly amazing. The rooms and common areas are very spacious and clean. The lay out of the kitchen and living room allows for people to be social. The hostel offers daily events to meet people. I met my best friends here and returned to the same hostel multiple times during my stay in Sydney! Very convenient location too!

I wouldn’t recommend this hostel for solo travellers, as more people are there to work and it isn’t very social. The rooms are relatively clean, however, as people practically live there, they had a lot of stuff everywhere and there was not much room for my own things. The showers were also a decent standard of cleanliness.||It was in a decent location: very close to the Central Station and around a 30-40 minute walk to the Circular Quay and Opera House.

Me and other hostel roommates spoke, and we agreed, the stay felt like being in a big family. Staff are amazing, comfortable beds, huge common room and great layout! Will be back someday :p

The worst customer service ever. I booked and stayed here for 1 night in a single ensuite and to the worst nightmare I experienced bed bugs in my bed. I talked to a guy at the reception and he was nice and he said I’d wait for his manager to come. I waited from 10am to 2pm for a rude lady yes their assistant manager to come. She checked my marks on my body and I told her the marks got better since 2am. I took Panadol to relieve the itchiness and she said she couldn’t do anything. I told her the cleanliness is the worst and she defended herself. Instead of listening to customers she ranted off how good and clean the hostel is. I told her to shut up but she didn’t listen to customers. I stayed here before in the twin sharing room and was only me in that room and didn’t experience bud bugs but this time, it was shit. The location is good close to central station but considering the customer service, it’s the worst amongst of the hostels in Sydney. Stay away from this place everyone. The guy at the reception is friendly and this rude assistant manager should be fired. Not even apologies to customers and this lady should know that no customers no business. The basic thing that she should have learnt when in charge of the business. I suggest her to go back to school to learn the basic stuff. The worst of the worst. Indian lady I think *Update* - After talking to Agoda customer support as I booked through Agoda, they’ve successfully resolved my issue. Not only did they listen to customers and apologise on this hostel’s behalf for its appalling service, Agoda has also refunded me. At least I know there are still good providers out there who know how to treat customers with respect and listen to customers instead of defending for their mistakes. Thank you Agoda. You should remove this hostel from your page.

I strongly recommend this hostel if you want to fully enjoy your trip. The people here are super chill and friendly, and there are events scheduled every week, so it’s easy to meet others and settle into the country. Not sure how to join in? Just find Ryan — he’s the best staff member in all of Australia! Cheers, mate! 😜

Only way to stay in Sydney. Friendliest Staff in probably the whole State, Super Fair prices and quick help with extra accommodation request. Always someone new and friendly to meet in the communal areas. Rooms are quite spacey and Bathrooms are clean. If you see a Hagrid looking smiley man, that’s Ryan (the absolute legend) and you just know you are in for a good time. He plans a fun activity each night for example movie night, cocktail night, etc. They all go down pretty early on and as soon as it gets late they continue at a bar or some place elsewhere, so the hostel is nice and quiet at Night. If you’re a backpacker looking for a nice stay in Sydney or just someone who is traveling through and wants to make that night either a comfortable and restful one, or one full of new friends and memories, this is the place to be!

Fantastic stay in the heart of the city! This hostel is perfectly located and has an amazing social atmosphere. A huge shoutout to Ryan, the events organiser—he truly knows how to bring people together and create unforgettable experiences. His energy and enthusiasm got everyone involved and made it easy to meet new people. Highly recommended for solo travelers or anyone looking to make new friends while exploring the city!

I have nothing to complain about this place. Each time I visit Sydney, this is my choice of place to stay. People are respectful of each other’s spaces and it’s considerably clean given the amount of backpackers. Just a heads up that most people wake up around 6/6.30 so you might need to tolerate the doors opening and closing. As for the location, it’s perfect. Central station is just up or across the street, depending whichever entrance you prefer. Good food surrounds this place so you won’t go hungry. You’d also find a 7-Eleven up the street if you want to catch a quick bite.
