10 Big Things in America's Smallest State

"Providence’s take on the Statue of Liberty, the Big Blue Bug welcomes Rhode Islanders and perplexed visitors alike to the city from the roof of a pest control company that he helped bring to prominence. The blue, 58-foot-long, fiberglass termite was built in 1980 as a marketing ploy for the company it sits on top of, New England Pest Control (now Big Blue Bug Solutions). Since then, however, it’s come to represent not just a pest extermination company, but the character of its city and state. A contest was held to name the insect with the winning idea being “Nibbles Woodaway” (clever, eh?). Nibbles was actually purple when he was first created since that is the actual color of termites under a microscope, however as the paint faded in the sun, he took on his now signature blue hue which he quickly caught on and was never changed.    What this Big Blue Bug says about the character of Rhode Island is another story altogether, but Rhode Islanders revel in seeing the Bug dressed up for different holidays and seasons (for example, with reindeer antlers for Christmas and Del’s frozen lemonade for summer), and seeing the reactions of outsiders questioning why it is again that they came to visit Rhode Island when they first see a giant blue bug greeting them next to the highway." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

We have been with Big Blue Bug for about a year and very happy with their services. We have called them for various issues so far: carpenter ants, mice, little ants, wasps.. (Yes, it is very adventurous to live in a wooded area :)) Their response time is excellent. We have had appointments scheduled right away. It is great to know that we can call Big Blue Bug whenever we have any pest problems. And today, Matt and Chris came to our house to treat for ants and to get rid of a wasp nest under our deck. Matt phoned before to let me know they were on their way. They arrived on time, answered all my questions (silly or not) and treated the needed areas. I’m disappointed with their recent customer service. I have been covered by their service for almost 10 years. In the past year communication has completely broken down. Frequently I will get a call from the technician stating they are 10 minuets away, that would be fine if I had received a call from the office in advance stating I had my quarterly scheduled service upcoming. There isn’t much I can do with a 10 minuet heads up when I’m at work. Being a customer for almost 10 years I call when I need service only to be told I have to wait a week or more, I’m not stating I should be a priority but being on a regular service plan I would think a two day window for service given my loyalty should be something considered; a problem I didn’t have a year ago. I’ve called for service recently and confirmed the appointment only to not have a technician actually scheduled; taking an entire day waiting but with no service. I asked about this and I was told I didn’t doubly confirm with the scheduler, I had confirmed however but that was the excuse given to me. The service BBB provides from their technicians are fantastic and professional however the customer service from the office is subpar at best. Unfortunately I feel I will be exploring options elsewhere for my homes pest control needs.

The Big Blue Bug, also known as Nibbles Woodaway, is the giant termite mascot of Big Blue Bug Solutions located along I-95 in Providence, Rhode Island. Anyone driving up or down I-95 through Providence can see the Big Blue bug on the western side of the highway. It is a true Rhode Island landmark and many people give directions based on it.... It is claimed to be the world's largest artificial bug at 928 times the size of an actual termite, standing 9 feet tall and 58 feet long and weighing 4,000 pounds. It was constructed over a four-day period from wire mesh and fiberglass in late 1980 at a cost of $20,000. The bug has made numerous media appearances, including the films Dumb and Dumber and Dumb and Dumber To, the television programs The Today Show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Daily Show, and Family Guy, the comic strips Zippy the Pinhead, Breaking Cat News and Bosquet, and the books Providence by Geoffrey Wolff, Roadside America by Mike Wilkins, Ken Smith, and Doug Kirby, and Weird New England by Joseph Citro. It was featured on a state scratch-off lottery ticket in 1997. The Bug is annually "dressed" for Independence Day, Halloween, and Christmas (in lights, reindeer antlers, and a blinking red nose). Since 1990, the company has sold stuffed toys in the Bug's likeness. If you drive from the airport and you see the blue bug, you know you are approaching downtown Providence !

Driving south through Providence, it was impossible not to see this big blue bug on the side of a building. What the heck? Doing some research online, I learned that the Big Blue Bug 58 feet long and he's a fiberglass termite. Created as a marketing tool in 1980, he stands on top of what used to be New England Pest Control which is now Big Blue Bug Solutions. AND HE HAS A NAME! "Nibbles Woodaway." Nibbles apparently dresses for the seasons with reindeer antlers for Christmas and such. You can't miss it from I-95. If I'm ever looking for pest control in Providence, this is my first stop. Could easily have roped me into some work but was super honest about it; said he'd love to take my money but there was really no need. The Big Blue Bug is an iconic staple in Rhode Island. A new homeowner, I was a little saddened/shocked/scared to even need to consider using them. One day I went in my basement to find a bunch of bugs coming through a crack in the floor. The bugs died same-day, but this kept nagging at me to get it checked out and figure out what was going on. I suspected termites and after some googling and comparing I was pretty sure this was my issue, which was terrifying. I first called one other local company that was a painful experience just to simply get someone to come out. They kept giving different prices over the phone and offering a "service plan" for what seemed like 350 different kinds of issues. After 20 minutes I asked if this actually covers treatments and the man said no - so time totally wasted there. They then gave several more prices for termite treatment, but as the price kept changing (increasing) I hung up. Seeking professional help, I turned to Big Blue Bug and could not be more satisfied. It was like I wanted to give this company my money. Paul came out right away for a FREE inspection and quote, and explained the problem, the treatment plan, with upfront cost, description of the warranty (1 yr) and how long the treatment lasts (10 yrs). Couldn't have been more satisfied with Paul's assessment of the situation and how he explained the treatment. There was also absolutely no pressure. Based on the level of professionalism alone these guys were HIRED. One thing I remember Paul saying was "every house in this area has either had termites, has termites, or will have termites" which brought me some peace of mind knowing I was not dealing with a totally catastrophic situation. Paul mentioned it was good to catch these bugs so early because they were in the ground, and was NO evidence of any issues to my home. He said the treatment would essentially be pro-active to treat them before they manage to do any damage to the house. I hired Big Blue Bug and Phil came out to do the treatment shortly after. Phil was so polite, professional, courteous in explaining the treatment they did. They even left a door tag with paperwork, business card, etc. Since the treatment I have seen absolutely no bugs whatsoever. They did an awesome job cleaning up as well. It brought such peace of mind knowing that my treatment is all set for quite awhile, and if for some reason there is any issue they stand by their treatment for 1 year. I have recommended Big Blue Bug to anyone who asks about pest control and will continue to do so given my awesome experience!

They couldn't help with any of the bugs I had problems with during the year. Then I get a bill for $588, I was very confused and called to ask what this bill was for. They stated it was for renewal of services only if I want to renew. No where on the bill did it say it was a renewal. Trying to get people to pay and renew without ever telling you. Service people hung up on me twice trying to get answers. Sad company trying to scam renewals.

I had a very informative, efficient, and knowledgeable technician, Aaron, make a house call today. He was following up on a call made about two weeks ago to address an ongoing issue...Aaron was prompt and wasted no time addressing the situation addressed by his colleague on the previous visit. He was patient as I asked questions; he was knowledgeable and offered suggestions; and he explained clearly and in terms I could understand what he was checking for and why. 13 years and I just canceled today. We have a carpenter ant warranty. They came in May to spray and we called Thursday to let them know we were seeing activity. They scheduled to come today. I checked my email this morning and to my surprise they had already come at 7:20, well before our appt. Our backyard is locked so they couldn't get in the back yard and only did the front. When I called ,the girl said they couldn't have anyone come back to do the back until july 7-i said that was unreasonable and why is it that the consumer is always inconvenienced by a company's mistake. The guy said there was no answer. Our storm door is locked so he didn't knock on our door and no way he rang the doorbell-we were up and have a dog! He also put in invoice that he was here from 720-741 which is a lie/it doesn't take 21 minutes to spray the exterior front of our house. I was on the phone with them for 45 minutes and all she said she could do is send an email to a supervisor. My husband called and was assured he would receive a call at 10:00- it's now 10:40. He called back and they said they would have someone call him. Zero customer service. They clearly don't care that they lost a customer of 13 years over their mistake and lie. If they don't want to come back and give us our spray and refund our annual payment it's fine.... we will be getting a lawyer seeing they breached contract. PEACE!! I will bump this up to a 3 after the VP Dejesus called us personally and sent a tech back out. However, they NEVER told us that there is a new policy and they can't open gates to get into the backyard! We weren't home and luckily i forgot my phone and the tech goes-You just made it! Like HELLO! For 12 years we never needed to be home!!!! communicate better!

I've been using Big Blue bug in Shrewsbury for 5 years. Everyone is very curtious, patient and thorough. Zac especially has been with me for sometime now and goes out of his way to make you feel comfortable and tries very hard to think of everything he can do to solve your problem. I am extremely fearful of mice and he constantly monitors and fills bait, moves boxes around and is like a detective , finding and plugging holes to where he thinks they may be entering. Zac is one of the super nice , caring employees who does his job really well and knows how to work with customers to make them feel well taken care of. I am so grateful for him.

It's not cheap, but you get what you pay for and Big Blue Bug has excellent friendly service. I highly recommend. They are similarly priced as the rest of them, but with Big Blue Bug you get more comprehensive coverage with the homeowners policy. You can call anytime for anything. You can't beat their response time. They give a 2 hour window and they call when they are on their way.

I thought big blue was a reputable company considering they were the ones to represent RI as the premiere place for pest control. So I contracted them and had them come by because I was preparing my house for a baby on the way and needed help with pest control. The first 2 visits from their experts made me realize it was a waste of money because they were doing nothing different from the traps I was setting out myself and being successful with. Their traps were ineffective and I was not satisfied with the service and asked for a supervisor to receive a refund back for. They kept giving us the run around and that a supervisor would get in contact with us and to no avail. I first contacted because of how unsatisfactory the service was in about 3 weeks and they kept promising it would get better in due time, stalling until the 3rd month came around and had charged us for more service that we did not want. I would not recommend this place at all.

I have had three major infestations of flying squirrels in my attic. Year after year they have returned, and chewed through wiring. It's an invasive processs, and wiring is expensive to repair. After the first infestation, I hired a local Narragansett firm who put out poison. The flying squirrels died in the walls of the house, smelled horrible, and launched many thousands of horseflies into the house (in the middle of winter.) It was a nightmare. This time I hired the BBB. They have been fantastic. I signed a contract. The work was much more than what was originally estimated, and they undoubtedly lost money. BBB stuck to their word, and remained on the job until the flyers (40 of them!!!!) were gone. Their employees were knowledgable, informative, polite, hardworking, and friendly. I wish there were more businesses of this caliber.

I am a landlord and my tenant called about possibly a squirrel running around in the walls & ceiling of the house. My property manager inspected and found no signs, and recommended Big Blue Bug for a second opinion. Meghan at BBB answered my call immediately, and arranged a free inspection for the very next morning. Paul conducted the inspection. He called both me and my tenant in advance of his arrival. Paul followed up with me immediately after the inspection. He concurred with my property manager that he could find absolutely no sign of any critters. He inspected indoors and outdoors thoroughly. He told me that they wouldn't waste my money other than recommending putting out a few glue or snap traps in key locations "just in case." Paul declined my offer to pay for the inspection but suggested calling BBB the next time the property is vacant so they could be absolutely thorough which is not possible with a lot of clutter. I was tremendously relieved and very grateful. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND BBB!!!

Yes I hated spending $2,000+ to have my home "sealed up" from pests but it was necessary and it's money well spent. In the past ten years, three bats and two flying squirrels had gotten into the house. Nathan inspected every nook and cranny of my house (larger, older home) inside and out and gave really valid advice. Fortunately or not, he taught me a lot about pests. Nathan set up plans where Mark, the technician, would come out several times over the course of several weeks. He set up traps and escape routes so that animals could get out of the house but not be able to get back in. I found the entire process to be well thought out and interesting. Now I have peace and quiet and no more worries about unwanted guests. Don't be put off by the expense. These people are very good at what they do and they will work until the problem is solved.

For Spring Cleaning to bugs-rodents.... whatever! I would recommend! Overall I will Give this Company 5 Stars. When I had my home Inspected, the inspector that came was professional and seemed well educated. He was accompanied by a trainee she was delight and down to earth and really seemed motivated!. As far as the technicians I had: Javier, Ken & Wayne I again say 5 stars! They came 2 times for the 2 treatments. Each time they were polite and professional. If you think about all the little things that need to be done before a home is to go through an extermination...add on getting kids off to school, grandson to a sitter and all pets out is exhausting enough then to remove dresser drawers and furniture away from the walls is overwhelming! But they really helped. Some things I forgot to do and others like moving furniture away from the walls so they could gain access was just too heavy and awkward for me which they took care of. I did receive information on how to prepare and preperation is important... these guys worked hard, picked up my slack and did what was needed to do to get the job done. I don't think anyone enjoys having to leave their home and to clear things around weather it's for a biannual rug-apholstry cleaning to an exterminstion... but it's the end result we often look foward to. If you're like me and it's more than "results" but how you were treated along the way that equally matters than this is the company and staff that I would recommend. The one thing that I would like to see added is a call ahead phone call to notify client. A 2 hour window is given but a call ahead would be tops!

My Experiences: Last year we started seeing tons of carpenter ants. Called Big Blue Bug. They came out quickly and sprayed the inside/outside and sprayed the nest. It was great. For the rest of the year we did not see any carpenter ants. This year we started to see carpenter ants. So we called them again, thinking about the great experience we had last year. So a young guy comes out and sprays the house. I think he does a great job so I write an email thanking them. A little while after I send the email I am looking on the ground and what do I see. A book for my then 10 month old right near the baseboard covered in the spray. Now if you know babies they like to chew on stuff. I threw the book out. The person who sprayed could have easily asked me to move the book. Instead the young guy chose to spray the chemical on the book that my 10 month old baby could have put in his mouth. Did our carpenter ant go away? No. So I called again. This time a middle aged man came out with a woman he was training. They sprayed the outside and inside again. I thought they did a great job. I have no complaints with them, but did the carpenter ants go away? No. The third guy that came out was also middle aged. He again sprayed the outside and when he sprayed inside he started to move furniture to spray behind it. I thought, that is a great idea and no one has done that yet! So after he moved one thing I went around and moved the rest. Then a day later I went around and started to move it all back and what happened? Well the piece of furniture he moved left a 4 inch gash in my hardwood floors. I think an obvious solution to this would be to tell the people when they call to schedule for a spray to move their furniture or they wont spray behind it and that to be safe the homeowner should move furniture so they can get behind and spray. That way they do not risk scratching the floor or damaging furniture and the walls behind get sprayed. I am not sure if the ants have gone away yet. We still see a fair number, but it has only been a week or so since they last came. My experience last year was spectacular but this year between the gash in my floor and the potential poisoning of my 10 month old has left me very upset. I will probably plan to do research this winter and then next year spray myself.

So after using the Big Blue Bug for 3 years and I am still having the same issue I called to cancelled.They put me through to a supervisor and she asks is there any issue. I said yes ...you have been coming for 3 years and I still have the problem and they keep telling me it's my fault. I have two dehumidifiers running in my basement which is air conditioned and heated. Then instead of trying to work with me or anything ...she says ok I'll cancel the contract. So after giving them nearly $1000.00 and I'm no better off then when I first called them that's all I get. So I'd say stay away and call someone else.

Cory and James tech #98 came to service my house at 8 am for spiders and just a general monthly spray. They were extremely professional and courteous despite being sprayed with my sprinkler system which I had felt so badly about. Nice way to start their morning but they were absolutely fine with it They explained the spraying and what they would be doing in full detail and were very personable. I would highly recommend them coming back again ! Thank you Big Blue Bug!

Big Blue Bug is a wonderful company to deal with! From the phone call you make to schedule service, to the service tech that come to the house- all accommodating , professional, polite- I can't say enough about dealing with a company that honors their customers- I would highly recommend them!

Today we had Liz Soares come out to look at our mice problem. She was extremely nice, professional and helpful...oh and patient...very patient with my millions of questions. They are now drawing up a plan to protect our home and I'm very grateful. Hopefully the mice move along...and fast!!!

I've used Big Blue Bug a few times in the past few years since buying my home, and I wind up thinking that they're a solid option for the area, although not without their flaws. They do respond quickly to inquiries and can usually arrange for someone to help with whatever your problem is within a timely manner. My first issue was with mice, and they were helpful with establishing traps while also realistic about my chances of success at keeping them out of an old house. My second issue was with my crawlspace, and it was there that I was disappointed - workers came to clean the space in what was supposed to take several hours, and left within 20 minutes. When an electrician went down the next day to do some much needed work, there were droppings everywhere. After protesting to Big Blue Bug, I did get a partial refund and someone came out to fix the job, but it was a disappointing development. I wind up thinking I would still use them for projects, especially as other options in the area are limited, but I would probably be a little more exacting in my expectations, and clear about what will be done.

These people were hired to take care of a rat problem a few years back, and they were terrible. We got a different person each week, and many times they didn't even show up and we would have to call them to remind them. One time this happened, they sent out a guy after our call, and he got out of his truck with a bug sprayer, all ready to spray our foundation for bugs. When I asked him what he was going to do, he said spray. I asked for what? He said bugs? Then I told him that we had a rat problem not bugs, and he was supposed to be checking bait stations and putting down more bait. So if I hadn't been home, either they would have billed me and not showed up at all, or billed me for bug spraying. We got rid of them. These people are very non professional and I would not have them back if the service was free.

We've used them once, and it was a very good experience. Mind you, our problem was pretty minor (ants). They didn't take long to schedule an appointment. Their technician, Aaron, showed up right on time (even a bit early -- helped that we were early in the AM). He was understated, which was fine, because we could go about our work while he did his -- we didn't have to stand around chatting. He left the place neat (didn't drag in a bunch of dirt on his shoes, etc.). He put in place treatments that did their job. The most important thing was that he explained what we should expect. This was important because the ants didn't behave quite as we would have expected, but because he'd carefully walked us through the process, we didn't worry (and call them unnecessarily). Eventually, the problem subsided in just the way we had described. That made Aaron's handling really professional and one that some other technicians might overlook. Their advertising is goofy, but you've got to admit it works: they're the first exterminator that comes to mind around here. I was concerned that a company that prominent might be shoddy on their job, and I was pleased that their technician seemed to care about doing his job well. Admittedly, our 5* doesn't mean that much given that our issue was minor -- any shop should have been able to handle it competently. Still, they did, which is what counts.

"wow, this one of the worst houses I've ever seen," said the technician who looked at the first home my husband I bought in which we realized did have a pest problem. Not something we really wanted to hear, but BBB has been easy to reach, nice to talk to and helpful. It was even easy to get them to come out the second time (which was no cost under our contract) when we still saw some critters after the first treatment. Overall, great experience! Our cost was about $1000 for a 3-story, multi-unit home that had some major pest issues (german cockroaches, mice and rats). Disgusting, I know, but we are good now!!

We had Matt D. (#82) come by today to check for mice in the basement. He was super thorough, checking nooks and crannies, and looking for the tiniest spots outside that might let them in.

UPDATE: Big Blue Bug called and immediately rectified the situation. The VP himself spoke to my mother and took care of everything. She and I are now very happy with the follow up and customer service that was provided. It is great to see the VP making personal phone calls to make things right. THANK YOU!
