After years of living next door in Greenfield, we finally made it to Big Jim's. We went as a party of 4 on a Thursday night, and we were immediately seated in the dining room. There's also ample seating in the bar.
The best way I can describe the ambiance is - imagine eating food in a yinzer grandparents basement. There are wood paneled walls and drop ceilings. If I'm remembering correctly, the floor was carpeted with a very low pile carpet and slightly sticky. The walls are littered with eclectic posters, art, and decor that likely dates back to the 70s. There is no music playing, but there was a large TV tuned in to KDKA, the local news channel. The chairs are mismatched. For some people, this decor may be off-putting, but to others it is familiar and cozy.
Our server was extremely friendly but it seemed like they were struggling with understaffing - it took about 30 minutes for her to come to take our order.
We ordered the clam strips, gnocchi with meatballs, fried shrimp basket, veal parmesan, and the turkey reuben. The prices are extremely reasonable and many meals come with soup or salad, pasta or fries, and garlic toast.
The clam strips were pretty small but were coated with a nice crispy batter and served with a delicious horseradish dipping sauce.
The gnocchi was just okay - it is not made in house. It was heavy and dense. The sauce is made in house and has a great texture, but isn't anything too special. The meatballs were huge and delicious.
The turkey Reuben was delicious. They oven roast the turkey in house and it was moist and tender. The sandwich was stacked high on rye bread, which almost seemed hollowed out in the middle to accommodate the generous portion of turkey. I would definitely order this again.
The fries were just okay - somewhat limp and lukewarm by the time they arrived to us. They are greasy cut potatoes - reminded me of potato patch fries if you're into that style.
The side salad included a lot of olives which was a nice treat. The wedding soup was okay and had lots of greens but no pasta or dumplings, which I consider standard for that type of soup.
Another note - They serve beers but no desserts (you won't be hungry after dinner).
If you're looking for huge portions for cheap, in an authentic, dive-y vintage Pittsburgh ambiance, definitely give Big Jim's a try. If not - I'd skip it.
