Finally, I made my way to Big John's Eatery for some brunch. Seeing the menu online intrigued me, and hearing some good responses from some of my friends about the place. Overall, I was pleased with my first experience and will be returning to try other items on their menu -- as they serve both breakfast and lunch.
While there was a wait time, it appeared for table seating, the establishment how high-top chairs at their bar available. So gladly took a seat by the corner while waiting for a menu. While they appeared short-staffed, the servers that took my order and provided me with drink and foodie goodness were incredibly polite and accommodating and did their best to ensure I had everything I needed.
Since they were out of gravy (so I didn't order the biscuits and gravy), I went for the BJE Chicken & Waffles, which were very good. Specifically, I enjoyed the fried chicken, which was incredibly tasty and not too heavy; I certainly liked how they prepared the chicken before frying and devouring each of the four pieces they served the dish alongside the red velvet waffles. While I found the red velvet waffles a tad dry, the cream cheese drizzle was sweet and satisfying without being overly used. I wickedly enjoyed their side of bacon. The right portion of three strips, the bacon had a nice smokiness and was incredibly savory.
Noticing what other patrons were having at the bar, I will return to have the Florida Boy dish that had an amazing-looking biscuit served with eggs, bacon, and a choice of grits, hashbrown casserole, or potatoes. The shrimp & grits also looked yummy, as did the wings.
Parking was pretty easy, as the restaurant is located in the same plaza as Dick's Sporting Goods, Texas Roadhouse, and Dunkin' Donuts, down the street from the Amphitheatre. I could see coming here way ahead of going to a concert for sure.
