We chose Big Meadows Lodge because we had stayed there many years ago and because we happened to be there for dinner and decided to stay the night since they had availability. We had not had opportunity to check out ratings on Trip Advisor. First of all, I would suggest that you ask to see the room before paying for it. The reason I gave this room (Room # 23) only a poor rating is because, unfortunately this room just doesn't even come up to an average room. (I'm comparing this to the many places we have stayed.) The bed was very comfortable but the room and bathroom had probably not been updated since the lodge was built. It was fairly clean, as clean as you can get something that old. We didn't even use the shower, but it was dripping all the time. The toilet roll holder came off as soon as I used it. Yes, the lodge is in a beautiful area and we enjoyed the delicious dinner in the dining hall, and the beautiful out doors and even spent all evening in the beautiful rustic lodge with the beautiful fireplace. Rustic is nice but this room was way beyond rustic. This room was in the main lodge and seemed to be kind of all by itself in an area where the workers seemed to be, as most of the doors indicated. Just to look at us, we are obviously seniors, and this room went though several sets of narrow steps and hallways. The lady at the desk did not even ask us if we were ok with steps. With all that being said, paying $200 for this room was not worth it. When we returned our keys, the lady at the desk was not very friendly. Maybe she knew that Room 23 usually gets complaints.
