I'm always excited to experience a brewery I've never been to. I've tasted Big Muddy's beer before, but I can't just jump in my car and drive an hour and a half on a whim. Finally, I made a plan to venture down south to Murphysboro.
The location wasn't quite as remote as Scratch Brewing, but it was a far cry from the urban setting of all the St. Louis breweries I've come to know and love. The building looks much like a warehouse and there isn't anything around it, but you're minutes away from town (in case you get hungry...they don't serve food here).
This place was packed! Thankfully, we managed to find a few seats and found a menu. I'm a sucker for anything pumpkin, so my first order of business was tasting their Pumpkin Smasher straight from the tap to my glass. It was glorious. I could have sipped on that beer all night, but I wanted to experience a nice spread, so I tried their IPA and Winter Ale. Both were enjoyable, but nothing can top the Pumpkin Smasher.
Aside from their lovely array of beer, their prices are the lowest I have ever seen. Three measly dollars for a pint? Yes, please! They also offer several t-shirts and growlers -- all nominally priced.
This place was definitely worth the trip.
