Wildest ride in the wilderness!
The third Disneyland roller coaster ride constructed in 1980, after the Matterhorn in 1959 and Space Mountain in 1977. Took 15 years to design and plan, and built in 1979 at a cost more than the original Disneyland Park of 1955!
The roller coaster runs around a mountain modeled after Monument Valley, with the scenery from Bryce Canyon National Park.
There are two tracks here, an outside track on the left and an inside track on the right. The line to the right moves slower, as the handicap and wheelchair family line feeds into that train at the loading station.
The outside track is slightly longer at 2780 feet, and definitely scarier with longer climbs and drops.
There are no seatbelts on the two person rows in each mining camp car, only a safety bar to keep you from being ejected during the high speed turns!
The multi car train starts off by climbing up a cog railroad inside a ghost mine, through a dark cave, past an abandoned 19th century mining camp. Once you reach the top, the roller coaster screams down curves, turns and a steep grade, with imminent collisions with tunnel overheads, before the inevitable last second sudden drop in the dark!
I remember the bobcat, the snakes, possum, roadrunner, the miner in the bathtub, and goat holding in it's mouth the lighted stick of dynamite!
Line moves fast, although one day the ride broke down, and was closed for a few hours. Everyone in line got a fastpass good the rest of the day on any ride except Peter Pan. And those already with a fastpass for Big Thunder Mountain got it extended for the rest of the day.
When the ride opened up, the fastpass line was 100 yards long outside the ride area, while the standby line was 90 minutes! All for a 4 minute thrill ride, peaking at 33 mph!
