Consider yourself lucky, blessed, charmed, favored, or just awesome if you get the chance to stay here. This is a find. A true, unparallelled experience, so completely genuine and rare that I consider myself very, very fortunate to have spent a summer here.
Billie's, at which I stayed in a tent out back intermittently for about 5 months, equaled the amazing Fairbanks experiences I had at Denali, the Tors, the White Mountains/Steese, biking to the Arctic Circle, and seeing Aurora in the middle of nowhere on Fort Wainwright. Like a very, very few hostels I've encountered around the world (Zhilam Hostel in Tibet and Sim's Hostel in Chengdu, China), Billie's is, in itself, a destination.
It's not just that it's way cheaper than a hotel, or that you can meet interesting people here. Though those are certainly factors. This place is so unique and full of the most interesting and kind people (as well as the least interesting and kind). That's what makes it amazing; the outrageous diversity of people there. I was the loner, and still got to know a couple of people well. I watched others become family. I also watched travelers have incredible experiences and pick up on opportunities that they otherwise would surely miss.
Billie is a saint, a fantastic woman and truly gracious hostess, and her family is wonderful. If you're looking for community, it's here. If you're looking for a cheap place to sleep and maybe meet some other travelers, you've got that too. If you're looking for a place to get completely fucked up, there's a different place for that, at the bar down the street.
I cannot recommend this highly enough, I suggest it most highly to my friends who live in Fairbanks, for this is a side of that city that few see, even after living there.
However, if you just want a room to sleep and to be otherwise left alone, which is fine, don't come here... though I believe there are private rooms, it's more for the social traveler.
