Australia's Newest 'Great Walk' Is a Multiday Hike Through the World's Largest Subtropical Rain Forest

"The recently reopened modern wing of an iconic forest lodge, offering rooms with sunrise views over rainforest canopy; although the property’s historic main building was lost in the Black Summer fires, trails have largely reopened and the lodge is planning new adventure offerings, including a via ferrata." - Sarah Reid Sarah Reid Sarah Reid is a multi-award-winning Australian travel writer, editor, author, and sustainable travel expert with a passion for positive impact travel. How Australia's Tourism Industry Is Recovering a Year After the Devastating Bushfires

"After the season's first bushfires tore through southeast Queensland, the heritage cottages at Binna Burra Lodge—one of Australia's oldest ecolodges and an 86-year-old enterprise—were burned to the ground; the loss resonated far beyond the local community, with former guests and donors calling in to help replace items such as a garden bench. Its reopening in September 2020, just a week shy of the fires' anniversary, felt like a pivotal moment in Australia's recovery." - Sarah Reid Sarah Reid Sarah Reid is a multi-award-winning Australian travel writer, editor, author, and sustainable travel expert with a passion for positive impact travel. We stayed at the Sky Lodge in Binna Burra and absolutely loved it! The view from the balcony was one of the most amazing we’ve ever seen — truly breathtaking. The lodge itself was beautiful, comfortable, and had everything we needed for a relaxing getaway. We also loved that there were so many hikes to choose from right at our doorstep! 🍃

We did a 6 km walk to Ships Stern lookout. Food at the cafe was generous on chips. The Lodge burned down 2 years back and is still being re-constructed. The snakes are on the move in mid September!

Location is superb if you are wanting a getaway from everything. The Tea Room was very disappointing, not much atmosphere at all and the food choices very ordinary. Skylodge unit was lovely, however I was disappointed with the gas fireplace, it did not generate much heat at all. Staff were all very nice and friendly. Might visit again when all has been rebuilt.

Really loved our room with views. We enjoyed some cheese, dips and crackers with a wine watching the views until we got white outed! It was a cool experience. The bath with views we didn't use, but next time we'll have more time and hopefully the rain won't stop us.

Staff were all amazing as always. The kitchen was very difficult to access as 2 campers had pitched their tents inside. With the Grooms Cottage and bar closed, and the cafe closing early, the celebration we had planned quite some time ago, did not happen as it was supposed to.

I am staying here right now for the first of 3 nights at the Sky Lodge. The walls are paper thin and we can hear every word the people in the next unit are saying. We can even hear their cutlery on the plates. Very disappointed. This was supposed to be a peaceful get away. If I was camping I would expect this.

We absolutely loved the location and natural beauty of Binna Burra – it’s truly stunning. However, we were disappointed with the dining experience. We paid for the breakfast and 3-course dinner package, but it didn’t feel like good value. The website originally showed the Tea House set up as a restaurant, but this has since changed – dinners are now served in plastic containers that you reheat yourself, which felt underwhelming for the price. The Tea House itself was at times very cold, and breakfasts were just okay – the space lacked warmth and atmosphere. Many of the walking trails were also closed during our stay. We were aware the main lodge was lost in the devastating 2019 bushfire, but it’s now clear how much that continues to impact the experience. It’s a fantastic spot for a self-catered stay or a day trip, but if you're after a complete, luxurious getaway, it may be worth waiting until more facilities and trails have reopened.
