The Sunday air was warm and inviting—the kind of weather that tempts you to wander with no particular plan. After a lovely afternoon out, a friend and I found ourselves stepping into Birch Coffee on 7th Avenue, hoping for a quiet close to the day. We kept our order simple: an iced latte, an Americano, and a lemon poppy scone to share. But unfortunately, this stop didn’t quite live up to the ease of the afternoon. The coffee fell flat—both cups lacked the depth or brightness you hope for, especially from a place with Birch’s reputation. The scone was serviceable, neither disappointing nor memorable. What truly cast a shadow over the visit, though, was the service. It wasn’t overtly rude, but there was a distinct sharpness to the interaction—rigid, impatient, and far from warm. In a space that should offer pause and comfort, that energy was hard to overlook. All in all, Birch Coffee felt like a missed opportunity. In a city full of exceptional cafés, the experience here—both in cup and in spirit—simply didn’t leave much to come back for.

A bit small, however it’s cozy enough to sit and unwind with your favorite brew and some mellow music. Their baristas are friendly and certainly makes you feel welcomed.

I like coming here before my work starts. I always get myself matcha or latte to stay. They macha taste very good, and so their coffee. It's a small, cozy place, music is not loud, it's perfect. They also have pastry like croissant, muffins, scones etc. Definitely recommend.

I continue my coffee discovery. The coffee here is also delicious and easy to drink. Thank you birch coffee team.

Google
Strong flat white and a bit more spacious than their other locations. Great coffee!

Google
Birch is one of the few local coffee shops around the big apple. Its quality really stands out (specially from a famous Seattle based coffee shop that you can stumble upon every corner). Having said that, their staff could be a bit friendlier, specially for those of us who can only have their latte when Unsweetened Almond milk. Worth to mention the Latte art is great.

Google
My visit to Birch Cafe was a delightful exploration of exquisite cappuccinos. The rich and flavorful brew they serve is undeniably delicious, making it a haven for coffee enthusiasts. Admittedly, Birch leans towards the pricier end, but the unparalleled quality of their cappuccinos justifies the cost. The cafe's ambiance is a bit snug, creating an intimate setting that might not be for everyone. However, what truly sets Birch apart is its exceptional service. The staff's efficiency is impressive, delivering a fast and excellent experience that adds to the overall appeal of the cafe. If you're willing to indulge in a slightly tighter and pricier setting, Birch Cafe promises a memorable coffee journey with its delectable cappuccinos and top-notch service.

Google
Very solid cafe in the area. They served up a 8.0 cortado that was overall a good cup. The beans were slightly lighter roasted than you normally find in cafes in New York. The milk work was competent but not special. Just a solid cup.

Yelp
Great flat white! Super cozy spot and great people but immediate 5 stars for an excellent espresso. I've been getting soy flat whites forever and only the specialty roasters use the right beans that shine. It really takes a few bad ones l for the excellent ones to shine. The brightness of the beans really shine through the soy milk in this flat white and I am very satisfied and happy now.

Yelp
The coffee shop is so so so cute! One of the best almond croissants I've ever had. Also all the books surrounding this place is fabulous.

Yelp
This is my absolute favorite coffee shop. Their blackberry latte was life changing. Like so good that I was getting it every other day. The blackberry matcha was delicious too. Their vanilla latte is also super good. They also have pastries from the Hungry Gnome, which is one of my favorite baking companies. I love the punch card system. I'm so happy I discovered Birch because it's now my go to spot for a good cup of coffee.

Yelp
Deep rich flavor of lattes, that's really all a coffee shop needs to do and it is rarely executed well. This place does it perfectly! Friendly staff as well

Yelp
Quick service which makes this a great place to stop on your morning commute. The coffee was average but they do have many options from traditional lattes to the cold brew with cold foam including oat milk cold foam for those that would prefer a nondairy drink. There are also two vegan and gluten-free prepackaged pastries. I didn't try them personally but it is always great to know they are offered. The space is small but there are a couple of tables that you can sit at. They also have many books that you can borrow while you are there or exchange if you have a book and want to leave one and take one. Overall would recommend giving this place a try.

Yelp
Great coffee shop to stop for a quick drink on the go. They have seats inside, bar stools, and a variety of pastries. Highly recommend the flat white, has an umami flavor! Would return.

Yelp
I love great accommodating service . Arrived to meet a friend for morning coffee and conversation. I was early so I ordered a large regular cofree and saw an everything croissant. Interesting I love everything bagels but never saw an everything croissant. So I ordered one. Moments later I had my breakfast and sat down. Coffee was hot and delicious and the croissant, yummy! So delicious I'm putting Birch on my places to go for coffee and.... Sorry Starbucks, you lose. Now comes the added laurels...I ate the croissant so fast I forgot to take a picture for this review. So I went back up to the counter and asked the young lady to display one on a plate so I could take a picture. She was a little taken back by the request but said ok as long as I didn't touch it. Only drawback is the place is small with not much seating. Yes, I will return often.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing customer service. Andrew is the best!! Great conversation and amazing latte art. Andrew you ROCK.

Yelp
- this location is super tiny, but quite adorable. - their chai is DEVINE, and mixed with the espresso it's quite nice. the perfect sweet and spicey combo. - expensive, but you get a lot of coffee in your iced cup compared to other places. - i have been here a few times at the end of my runs, and i have to say it's a great treat after running the west side highway.

Juliana N.

Yelp
Maybe I've been going to the wrong places, but thoroughly enjoyed their cappuccino here
google avatar

Yelp
the COZIEST cup of coffee can be found here. i wanted to have a warm beverage after having spent an hour and a half running in the rain. I ordered a soy vanilla latte, and it came out perfectly sweet and foamy without being sickly.
google avatar

Yelp
The little treasure of a place isn't too far away from Integral Yoga Natural Foods- a place I use to work that is now permanently closed. Great coffee, positive vibes and a sense of pride in each cup that makes this place special. The west village area has changed in many ways and Birch is apart of that. I hope it stays for years to come! Loved the Cold Brew!

Yelp
The spiced latte!!! Get it! Cannot express to you enough how comforting, rich, warm, and creamy this seasonal special. Just coffee with a bunch of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and cloves and the perfect amount of spice and sweetness. So smooth and delicious to drink. Getting this all the time now. 5 stars!!!!
google avatar

Elvira D.

Yelp
Yummy! I remember getting an iced chai latte from here which was sweet but delicious. After all, aren't they normally sweet? I recall the interior of this coffee shop having a very homey, library type of feel. Bookcases and all. My friends and I took a night brisk walk and passed through an elementary school to get to this shop. It was cute!
google avatar

Yelp
Love the oat milk and hemp milk lattes! The coffee always tastes delicious. It boarders on being overpriced though. ($6.25 for a large) Took away one star for the environment. This location is very small and feels crammed. The tables are too small to really do anything other than drink your coffee and chat with a friend. Also, no WiFi is available which, in my opinion, has become standard for a coffee shop to have in 2019.
google avatar

Anissa L.

Yelp
First time trying out Birch Coffee! This coffee had a really good taste and definitely would come back to have another one. The price point was fine and definitely on the borderline of it being a bit expensive, depending on what you have! The only part about this specific location that I didn't like is that there isn't any wifi for you to work but there is enough space for you to have a convo with your friend. The tables are small and really only room for a book and a coffee. Also, there isn't a restroom. Just wanted to point that out. Overall, a great experience because the coffee was really good.
google avatar

Yelp
Visit there occasionally. Excellent coffee. Great service. I love their pastries. Will come again. Michael

Yelp
Birch a solid little coffee shop on the edge of the West Village. It is less of a coffee shop in the classic sense, where you pull up a table and do work or snuggle up in an easy chair and read a book over your chai latte. It is more of a coffee kiosk. It is a very small shop, with only a few stools. Also, the menu of pastries, etc. is limited as well. However, if you are looking for good coffee to get in get out and go on your way, this is a good place for you. Personally, I am not a huge fan of their coffee, but it is pretty good. I think the taste part of coffee all comes down to personal preference. Regarding the get in/out/go part, they are located about 50 feet from the 1/2/3 14th Street stop.

Yelp
A great coffee shop that's perfect for a break over a well-made pour over. The baristas were very helpful in providing recommendations on single origin roasts and my wife and I both thoroughly enjoyed our cups. Worth a stop!
google avatar

Paige O.

Yelp
I love Birch so much. I am addicted to their chia latte. It was one of the best lattes I have had. The shop is super nice inside and has a cool vibe. This is definitely a place that I will be coming back to when I am here again!

Yelp
I stumbled into Birch Coffee straight out of the subway and grabbed a cold brew on the way to my sister's office. It was cold, strong, and just a tad creamy with the addition of some soy milk. The location was small and cozy and seemed like it had a great vibe. Baristas were friendly and I was in and out in under 5 mins. Win.

Yelp
Simple, chic, tasty coffee. The service is really great and the customers are super friendly, too!

Yelp
Great coffee, though it took forever (they're on par with Blue Bottle waiting times here). I get it, though - it takes time for the good stuff. Anyway, I had a great skim latte and my friend liked her cortado. Edit 7/2018: iced coffee is excellent and they serve Underwest Doughnuts now. Can't go wrong with the Car Wash!! The cheddar scone was a bit of a letdown so definitely go for the doughnuts instead.

Dave C.

Yelp
Went here on a recommendation, i love coffee, service was welcoming. the barista was very helpful in offering a suggestion, the cold brew with cold foam was delicious. I was worried it would be to sweet, I usually don't add sugar to coffee, she described it as a not to sweet complement/alternative to milk which was spot on. Im a fan of the coffee. The only down fall is Manhattan prices.
google avatar

Kelly B.

Yelp
I had a good experience here. The space is very small - smaller then most other coffee shops. There's no space for lingering...you come in, get your order and have to move on your way. The cold brew was decent. I was in and out quickly during rush hour. There were a good amount of employees on, so everything moved fluidly. Got caught snapping a photo of the menu for my Yelp check-in. Always feel a bit strange trying to snap those. I will likely return to try something else on the menu. Sounds like some of the other menu items may be worth another try.
google avatar

Yelp
5-star cold brew at a 5-star place. Love the convenient location (close to every westside subway line), always friendly baristas, and quick service. Cold brew is always strong & delicious without any bitterness! For the best cold brew in NYC, follow @nyccoldbrew on Instagram!
google avatar

Elgodo C.

Yelp
Kind of sucks they have pour over on the menu, keeps bringing me in but end up getting nothing since their brewed coffee is also just a blend. Can't have a "third wave" decor and menu if all you're gonna offer is lattes and espresso plus sugary drinks. Second time i mistakingly came in i ended up ordering an Oat Latte, got a whole milk latte, and the runs! Thanks for that. Can't go wrong with Chocolate Croissants right?? Well, if you like 3 day old pastries you can't, eh?

Yelp
I had the chance to visit this Birch Coffee location while catching up with friend who was visiting the city. I've been to several Birch locations but this was my first time at their spot on west 14th street. Walking in I instantly noticed that it's smaller than their other locations around the city. It has about four high top tables and a small counter top where you're able to enjoy your beverage. Honestly though I'd say this spot is best to grab and go with your coffee since the seats fill up pretty fast. I ended up ordering a small 12 oz. coffee that came out to be $2.75. Compared to other options in the area I'd say this was a little steep as well, especially given the fact they only had one brew. Overall an ok spot to grab a quick coffee and head out. There are a few other options in the area with larger seating spaces I'd check out first though if that's something you're looking for.

Yelp
This is a great spot for a cup of coffee. Walked in for a macchiato and sat. Great atmosphere, quiet, and the coffee was good. They have alternative milk options, such as the elusive Oatly oat milk. Only critique is that there is not a lot of space. I didn't take a close look, but I believe that new configuration could give more space. I had to ask a couple to move that took up the tiny window bar. Not a big issue, but it would invite more people to stay longer. All in all, will go there again.
google avatar

Yelp
Wanted not Starbucks Coffee and a snack while killing time before meeting with friends. This place is tiny with limited seating, but people were still around working on laptops. I had a chai latte and a vegan peanut butter cookie. The chai didn't taste bad, but nothing unique. The cookie was definitely good. Before I showed up, I really had to pee. After a chai latte, I really really had to pee. As far as I could tell, no public restroom :/

Yelp
I guess once in a while you just wanted to return to some of your old favorite coffee shops and have something classic over there. So today I settled myself in Birch, a chained coffee shop spreading around NYC, and enjoyed my flat white. Unlike all those hipster trendy spots, Birch to me was more like a family-style coffee places, that I could bring a book, sit down, and quietly enjoy some of my personal time (of course with coffee in hand) - a feeling I was always longing for. Wish they could bring more locations in the city.
google avatar

Darren B.

Yelp
Birch is awesome, at least this location is (haven't been to any of the others). There is such a great vibe here right from the moment you walk in. Right off the bat, I liked the deli counter style menu rather than the over done chalk board, the wood tables that had character and felt lived in and seasoned rather than fresh and new. Everything felt more natural, more authentic here and less like they were trying too hard which I feel many other coffee shops seem to do. Now this is not a place to come work, and I think that's the point. There's no wifi, so you can either get your coffee to go, or stay a while, kick back, enjoy your coffee, have a meaningful conversation with a friend, ponder our existence relative to the multi-verse, read a book or do as you like. My barista was super nice and the espresso had great depth and flavor. It was just what I was looking for. If I lived in the area, I'd come back here all of the time. I guess I'll settle for the next time I'm in town.

Emma B.

Yelp
Great service! They were very kind answering my questions with the alternative milks. I think I got hemp--it was alright, but not my absolute favorite. The seating is all high-tops I believe, which was fine with me but isn't very accessible to those living in disabled bodies.
google avatar

Alexandra L.

Yelp
The Quick: High quality coffee and a nice spot to stop by. Lots of snack options in case you're looking for something sweet. Much better than a Starbucks as there is a more local vibe, even though it's a chain as well.
google avatar

Caroline A.

Yelp
New location, same great products and service. This morning I finally tried the toasted almond tea and it was incredible. I've had their coffee before (at the Flatiron location), which was great in and of itself, but this iced tea takes the cake. I don't know how they make it, but it is unlike any other tea drink I've ever had. On a hot soupy day like today in NYC I definitely should've gotten the large instead of the small to go because by the time I reached the train I was already done with it! This is also the place where you want to take your coffee to go as it is a rather small cafe. The baristas were incredibly friendly here, too, so A+ for service. All, come here and have the iced tea. You won't regret it.

Yelp
Location: I have been here at least 10 times. I become less and less satisfied with Birch Coffee. First of all, it is small - three tables and long table with few seats, you have to lose your privacy and share space with random person. Sometimes, it is just not comfortable, at least for me. Secondly, they do not have wifi. I do not know why I did not ask if they have wifi before. I guess it was because I always just grabbed coffee here instead of ... actually sitting in. Yeah, no wifi, Birch coffee basically does not want you to be here long. Last, the decoration is very hippie tho. Coffee: Latte is a good start if you first come here. But do not ever order their drip coffee. It is lousy, bad and I wanna throw it right away after my first sip. In addition, no almond milk. Ask milk and then will give it to you some... Bad, and over time disappointed.

Yelp
My wife, friends, and I did a coffee crawl within just a few blocks of Birch Coffee, making this location our very first stop. We later went onto Bluestone Lane Collective Cafe. Two of us preferred our coffees there and myself and my Delaware friend preferred our lattes from Birch Coffee. This location of Birch Coffee also has a few seats to enjoy your coffee and several pastries including doughnuts from Brooklyn's Dough. They also have a little library where you can borrow a good book as you sit and enjoy really quality coffee.
google avatar

Yuki E.

Yelp
Stable and great coffee shop and open 'til later than other coffee shops near-by. I am a fan of their cappuccino. Their staff is always friendly.
google avatar

Vivian H.

Yelp
OK, so I am not a coffee snob, usually I am an equal opportunity caffeine addict, but since I was given a Disloyalty card (basically a card that sends you on a coffee scavenger hunt), I am now on a coffee hunt mission! I've already been to Gimme! coffee and this is the second stop on my tour de coffee. The baristas are super friendly, and even remembered my name when I was leaving the place. It has a nice community vibe to it. I had a small soy latte ($4) and it was my second cup for the day, so now the engine is well lubricated. Good coffee, no burnt taste and yumminess all around. They have wifi, but you get a code for only 30 minutes, so you can't like just loiter here for hours. But, I am sure if you needed more time, they would help. Nice coffee place, would definitely go back when I am in the area!
google avatar

Akhila R.

Yelp
I love Birch coffee. They are the only coffee place I've been to that I know carries oat milk. If you haven't tried it already, try oat milk here! It's vegan milk steamed from oats. I generally don't drink vegan milk, but oat milk is delicious! I always order the iced chai with oat milk. The chai is better than all coffee shops I can think of and has the perfect amount of natural sweetness with the oat milk! Must try!
google avatar

Yelp
A nice place to pick up a cup and do a hang out for a short bit. Not so much for working or intense conversation. The cold brew we had was solid (and popular, as evidenced by the ability to purchase growlers of it). The iced latte I had was pretty forgettable. The chocolate cookie was good. Overall, definitely worth checking out if you're interested in New York coffee. * 1 visit

Yelp
Solid coffee shop for a quick break. Pros: good coffee, nice baristas, passionate staff, amazing doughnuts! Cons: not much seating, not a place to come work or hang out for a long time Would come here quite a bit on my way to Pratt before class. Great cozy spot for a good cup of coffee. Also their iced teas are delicious!
google avatar

Janice L.

Yelp
This place is super adorable and what an amazing find! They have vegan pastry options and even serve soy and hemp milk (though it's not on their menu). I had the decaf almond tea and it smelled amazing along with tasting great. The staff were friendly and polite. They even do the leaf designs in their coffee much to my delight. My friends loved their cappuccino and cortado. Will return for sure!
google avatar

Becca B.

Yelp
Just a quick tip for this one -- it was on the Yelp "accepts Apple Pay" search results map for me this morning, but they do NOT accept Apple Pay here. Great cold brew, though!! And the interior is very nice. They have a selection of pastries for breakfast (sweet almond croissant, muffins, etc) and I bought a LENKA nut and berries bar for $3. Pretty good!
google avatar

Kayla G.

Yelp
I've had birch before and liked it, so I went to quickly stop in this evening for a cappuccino. Walked in at 7:49, they close at 8, and the employees told me they couldn't serve me anything but iced coffee or tea because the machine "shuts itself down" and was already turned off. I used to be a barista so I'm pretty sure that was a lie. Even if it was hypothetically true, the machine should shut down at 8 when the store closes. Bad experience.
google avatar

Mary P.

Yelp
Their lattes are good. Their pastries are too (Balthazar, almond croissant, yes please). Their coffee is sort of sour. They also place your name on the cup which is endearing. I like the wood panelling in the store. I wish I could spend more time here enjoying myself and not running out to work right after my purchase.
google avatar

Olivia S.

Yelp
The magpie = homemade pop tart. What the?!?? Light fruit jam, buttery flake crust and all sorts of sweet and savory deliciousness your mouth! I think I fell in love with pop tarts again, ma! And the coffee is made with love. And from awesome friendly baristas, might I add! So good. I'm coming back. Hooked indeed!
google avatar

Susan L.

Yelp
We both got a small drip coffee there yesterday evening ($2.50/each), and the coffee was very weak & tasted really watered-down. The two guys working there were *exceptionally* nice, but the coffee was lousy.... It's a tiny place, with seating for just a few people.
google avatar

Venkata M.

Yelp
Pros Excellent brew Very friendly service Close to the subway Cons Very small place, hardly three tables
