Birchrunville Store Cafe

I can absolutely see why Birchrunville Café books out months in advance! I’ve been following them online for ages without having been, and it paid off when we lucked into a last-minute Saturday night reservation. It turned out to be one of the best dining experiences my husband and I have had in a long time. The food was incredible, the service exceptional, and the atmosphere was cozy and charming, it truly didn’t disappoint. We’d happily order everything we had all over again, though the menu changes often, which just makes us even more excited to come back and try the newest creations. Here’s hoping we can snag another reservation soon! Extra bonus points for being BYOB

I am sure this restaurant does not need anymore reviews. This restaurant is outstanding. I wish I had the ability to indicate 7 out of 5 stars. Another elegant location hidden away in the Pennsylvania countryside. The food was truly amazing! I can’t hardly describe the four flavours I tasted in the steak I ordered. We also ordered dessert of which was also outstanding. You know my recommendation, seek this place out…also, you have to reserve well in advance. Highly recommend!

this was one of the best meals of my life. Disclaimer: this is a very average-person review of an excellent high end restaurant. there is also no cell service in this area, which makes me love this place even more. However it can be a little spooky at night. appetizers: tuna - idk personally how it tasted but allegedly very good skate - Im not sure what i was expecting, just tasted like fish I think. salmon - delish croquette - who knew potato and arugula could taste so good. arugula was so light and sour and a bit salty from the smashed croquette. I remember the croquette tasted like a starchy cheese but in a good way? entrees: steak - excellent duck - excellent, not too chewy or fatty, nice rich flavor cod - tasted like cod, tbh I dont like cod all that much butterfly fish - I forget what the fish was called but this was my dish and SOOSOSOSOSOSOSO DELICIOUS. I love a crispy skin and the tomatoes on top were to die for. Most memorable component was the skin and tomatoes❤️ Dessert: lava cake with pistachio gelato. I'll just say Trader joes has a lava cake and also a pistachio gelato (separate items) and they taste very similar. You can't really go wrong with flour milk and sugar

Best food I've had in Pennsylvania. Hard to decide which dish to get, as every one looked like a winner. A+++ Relica was a great server as well.

Absolutely amazing dinner!!!! Please note you have to make tasting menu reservation in advance. We had made reservations but didn’t know to call in for tasting menu. Regardless, dinner was incredible! We enjoyed the crispy pheasant with mushroom risotto for appetizer, I got the pheasant roulade with mushroom duxelle and husband got filet Mignon, and we shared butterscotch cake and lava chocolate cake with pistachio gelato. Our waitress was attentive and personable, ambiance was cozy and the lack of signal ensured no one was on their phones, and the food was flavorful, tender and well-cooked, and beautiful to look at. Parking was also available! Will look forward to trying the tasting menu next time!

I am not coming back to this place again. We had a dining experience at this restaurant on December 13, 2025. Below is my review, along with suggestions for improving both the food and the restaurant’s operations. We started with appetizers, which were excellent in terms of flavor. We ordered the crabcake and the burrata salad, both of which were very enjoyable. However, there was a significant issue with the salad. The menu description stated that it included figs, but none were present when the dish was served. When we asked our server, she confirmed—and apologized—that the restaurant had run out of figs. While I appreciated the apology, this is something that should have been communicated proactively before the dish was served, not discovered by the customer mid-meal. This appears to be a lapse in management responsibility. For the main courses, I ordered the pork chop (~$43), and my wife ordered the red snapper. The red snapper was cooked well and enjoyable. Unfortunately, the pork chop was noticeably too salty. Although I chose not to return it and finished most of the dish, the saltiness lingered for hours afterward, suggesting it was significantly over-seasoned. Given the price point, it did not meet expectations. I am generally tolerant and understand how demanding kitchen work can be, but for a restaurant of this reputation, consistency in main dishes is essential. Dessert was a highlight. We had the chocolate lava cake and the chocolate mousse—both were excellent, well-balanced, and not overly sweet. Overall, we enjoyed the atmosphere and service. The staff were kind and attentive, and we were celebrating our anniversary. We appreciated the thoughtful gesture of adding a candle to our dessert, which made the evening feel special. For a reservation-only restaurant with a strong reputation and premium pricing, the quality of the main dishes did not meet my expectations. We’ve been an occasional customer to the pastry shop, but not so sure whether we will return to the restaurant.

A top notch restaurant in Chester County. Feel so lucky to have such a delightfully charming place to dine in the neighborhood. I love the creative dishes. Presentation and flavor is appreciated. Our server was a real charmer. She offered to mix us a drink since I forgot to bring my bottle of wine. The boneless breast of duck still make my mouth water thinking about it. I found the escargot to be on the salty side. So happy we got the butter scotch cake dessert! Blew my mind! Very charming decor in a country setting location. The wait for reservations might be long but it's worth it. Have to remember my wine bottle next time.

This place is a little hidden gem. The character and charm of this spot is amazing. Inside an old general store sharing a bathroom with the post office! BYOB so yay! Food is elevated and French forward. Husband and wife ran and owned. Yummy and unique. Hard to get a reservation, so good luck :) but if you do worth it!!!

We are new residents to the area and have been eagerly looking for a wonderful, quaint spot for date nights as well as a local place to bring our family + friends when they visit. Well, after one dinner here - we found it! From the wonderfully attentive staff to the talented chef, we love Birchrunville Store Cafe and decided to give it a visit again this weekend! The chefs attention to detail makes every dish feel like a special treat. I haven't had a bad dish yet and an added bonus is, it's BYOB! Enjoy a wonderfully curated menu alongside your favorite wines / cocktails from home. How much better can it get?

This was a sweet experience with a rustic vibe, and the food was pretty delicious. The staff was very kind and took care of us for my birthday! The carpaccio was delicious as was the mushroom soup. Note: BYOB!

Another amazing meal from Chef Francis and his incredible staff. Each dish was carefully planned and preparation was executed perfectly. We love this quaint little place and I know you will too. Can't wait to go back.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at a wonderful restaurant, and I can't stop raving about the incredible food! It felt like a dream come true--great food and an enjoyable atmosphere. We kicked off the evening by sharing a variety of appetizers, and I was particularly impressed by the squid ink pasta. At first, it didn't get much love, but by the end of the first course, the sauce thickened perfectly, coating the noodles beautifully. I had a few bites at the end, and I thought it was absolutely delicious! The veal cheeks were phenomenal--tender and bursting with flavor. And can we talk about those oysters? They were the first thing I thought about when I woke up the next morning. They reminded me of deep-cupped Kumamoto oysters, but even bigger and better, served with a vibrant vinaigrette that made them unforgettable. We also enjoyed broiled oysters with Gorgonzola and Parmesan. A simple wedge salad was elevated with the Korean pork barbecue side. The sauce on the pork barbecue was sweet and savory and paired well with the Gorgonzola it was fresh and innovative, and elevated this beautiful little wedge. (we split the salads.) The entrées were shared, passed around to each other. The pork tenderloin was absolutely tender and delicious, I really enjoyed my taste of the duck with foie as well. Then there was the rustic sweetbreads and lobster strudel. This dish was not for the faint of heart because the sweet breads were large and crudely prepared, but I loved it! The delicate pastry and lobster combo was fantastic. I do think they could have done a bit more with the sweetbreads; they were tasty but a bit rough around the edges. One of our diners had a fish that was delicious, but I felt like this restaurant has interesting entrées that should be experienced. I would move past the fish for something more interesting. As we moved through the meal, we enjoyed each entrées, culminating in a fabulous butterscotch Bundt cake that was pure simple heaven. Overall, this dining experience was a true culinary delight, and I highly recommend checking out this restaurant for anyone looking to indulge in imaginative and exquisite food! Don't forget to bring your favorite wines to pair with this delicious food. The service was wonderful and speedy. We had the first seating and we were given two hours to enjoy our meal as they were turning over the table to the next diners. I would absolutely go back to the Birchrunville Café.

This long awaited meal was absolutely worth the wait. The food was delicious and the menu offerings were vast and eclectic. My husband and I tried 6 different menu items. Lobster bisque, love pillows (gnocchi), Halibut with a citrus champagne beurre blanc, branzino, butterscotch cake, and the coffee creme brulee. Everything was fresh, beautifully plated and most importantly, perfectly cooked and flavorful. The butterscotch cake was probably my favorite menu item. Service was excellent! The restaurant is quaint and cute. Parking is also available right across the street at the bake shop if you aren't able to snag restaurant parking. My only gripe (which I won't take a star off for because it's partially my fault that I didn't ask beforehand) - restaurant doesn't take AMEX and it isn't noted anywhere. I checked website and resy. I can understand not taking AMEX but recommend it be noted on the website. I used my AMEX card to book the res on Resy and that same card would be charged for a cancelation fee should I have been penalized, and I also purchased a giftcard through toast as a gift with my AMEX. I had just assumed I could use my AMEX card for dinner and was hopeful for same because I have a semi-annual dining credit. Unfortunately I couldn't use the card to pay for dinner. Just a heads up to future diners to bring an alternate card if you opt to use credit.

A charming, intimate, little gem. The food was tasty, and the service was prompt and very nice. The octopus appetizer was refreshing and light. I enjoyed the duck entree and the staff celebrated my birthday with a sparkler in my creme brûlée! It is fun that it is byob and I enjoyed my experience here!! Nice spot

We have been here several times and it never disappoints. Our wait staff was very nice and attentive and our meals delicious. Cute little slice of local history. If you are having a hard time getting in I suggest getting on their wait list.

Most of us miss "the book" one of the charms that this restaurant had for years. The old fashion way of booking, the menu being different every time you went, their signature desert!, the coziness. The food is still great, but no ever changing menu anymore. The staff still awesome! But they wont come with "the book" anymore. And while no doubt the deserts are good, the Butterscotch, their signature desert, gone! We couldn't believe that was gone! It seems every time we go something else is different, taking this gem a little bit more away from the old hidden in the back of the woods charming spot it has been for so long.

For decades Chef Francis at has put out some of the best dishes in the region and tonight did not disappoint. They now have a few outdoor tables on the back porch by the babbling stream. The ambiance in this 1900s general store is stunning and the staff makes the experience superb. Just don't ask for your meat to be well cooked - please - trust the chef.

Charming rustic dining room that is in an old building that also houses the Birchrunville post office. The food was good, but not great. Nothing truly special about the halibut with sea scallops that I ordered. The portions were incredibly small, in fact, minuscule. A tiny square of halibut and 2 slices of 1 sea scallop adorning the top of the halibut square. I left the restaurant still hungry after my dinner. Service was adequate. Had heard many good things about this restaurant and looked forward to dining there. However, did not experience anything that would entice me to dine there again.

What a perfect place to celebrate with the family. It was the first time we had all been together in months so we wrapped a few accomplishments into one. They even decanted our celebratory wine bottle for us. This fancy restaurant is an absolute gem. From the outside it looks unassuming (I believe its an old repurposed general store) located in a quiet part of the burbs across from my favorite coffee shop. Reservations do have to be made in advance, no walk ins but the interior is so adorable. It's very homey, with low lighting and hushed tones. There's even old cooking utensils used as decor. As for food, here's what we got that I recommend from appetizers ($17-20): mushroom truffle lasagna, both salads, the soup, and we even tried the oysters (not bad for a place far from the ocean!). And for entrees $35-$40 (my first pick was sold out guess it must be good): the fish stuffed with more fish and we tried some escargot (also not bad for a place in PA). Unfortunately, there was not much for a vegetarian to eat here so it loses a star there. But the fish I got instead was spectacular, even if it did only have two potato wedges. Why can't we get more? But regardless, hats off to the chef for the tasty food.

From the moment we walk in we felt special. The service was outstanding. And it continued till we finished. The menu was amazing, it was hard to pick, all of the choices sounded amazing. From the first course till the last it was all delicious. We made our next reservation before we left.

I am sad to actually post this review because Birchrunville was one of our favorite places to go to dinner for special occasions or just to have an excellent meal. But now it is catering to I have no idea who, we were long-term customers more than 10 years we would put reservations in advance via the book we would put six reservations in every year bring at least four to six people and enjoy a fabulous meal. With their new Resy system it is the worst, we cannot get a table no matter what date I put in or how many people it says it's not available. I have no idea why they've decided to go to the system and the biggest thing about this system is it's only for Apple users. It clearly appears they are so catering to the social media crowd. We are Android phone users but we're not social media folks whoever is running this system at Birchrunville you need to return to the regular system you are alienating many many of your long-term customers. I noticed a recent review on here that again a customer trying to get in is unable because your new system just doesn't work. I actually sent an email to Birchrunville about this issue with no response.

Likely the most talented chef within a 100 miles. Have eaten at Birchrunville 5 times. Every dish is a gastronomic adventure. The staff is phenomenal; you get the impression that they love what they do and function more like a family than a business. Chef Francis is down to earth and loves to chat with his guests. Honestly, restaurants like this are very rare.

Birchrunville cancelled on my anniversary dinner 2.5 hours prior to it and blamed it on an error with Resy (Resy said it's their error). My wife and I were really looking forward to the dinner. Birchrunville put a major damper on our anniversary. They were mildly nice/friendly about the issue.

Unfortunately, it's impossible to get a reservation with their new reservation system. Was told that May through August would open up on April 1. Logged in at 5:45 AM and May was gone, June and July were almost gone (had a couple left but they were for 8:30 PM). How is that possible at 5:45 AM on the day the months open? Do some people get to book before it opens in RESY? We've eaten here a few times and did enjoy it. Unfortunately doesn't look like we'll ever be able to again though. Gave 2 stars because we always liked eating here when it was possible.

Honestly, this is our favorite restaurant. We go about every 3 months since it opened in 1999. Francis & his wife are both awesome! Servers are great. Recently they went to the Resy system. It is horrible. I can't tell you how many times I logged in for reservations and it's never available. If you put in 2 people it's never available if you put in 4 people there are openings during the week which we don't want. I left a message several times to talk to Francis about it and the women that answers the phone was never accommodating. We want to go but I can't monitor the resy site. If you do the notify, I log in immediately and it says the table is gone. So sad.

Birchrunville is absolutely the best restaurant in the Burbs of Philadelphia. It will hang with any James Beard nominee in Philadelphia. In my eyes even with Michelina Star restaurants I've been to. The service atmosphere and food are second to none! I don't really get some of the bad reviews. But I'll say this, not everyone deserves to have a meal from one of the best Chefs in America!

The staff were friendly and the food was good although I felt it was over priced. I wasn't overly impressed with the menu but my spouse loved it.

Sadly, this has been our favorite for years, but this past visit crossed it off our list. We were excited to go for our anniversary, but the food was just ok. I ordered the strip steak and sadly it was chewy. The waitress was kind and offered to redo it, but that time my husband would have been done his meal. Not idea. The apps were also just ok. Not great, but ok. So sad, as I said, it used to be our favorite.

Always amazing as usual! Food and service are first rate!. Apps were great so were entrees. For dessert we order one of each!

I was hesitant to write a review because I don't want more people finding out about this hidden gem! Hands down mine and my husbands favorite restaurant. Charming and intimate ambiance, friendly and attentive staff, outstanding food! Also love that it's BYO. My husband and I come here for special occasions and are always leave saying we just had the best dining experience ever....and then the next visit is even better than that one! Can't wait until our next return.

The food is just ok; the atmosphere is just ok; and they are on a schedule to move you in and out for reservation timing. My husband's bronzini was skimpy and fishy - worst I've ever tasted. Glad I did not order that. Not sure what the fuss is all about. I think people need a big check to assure themselves they "enjoy the finer things in life." This is not fine!

Fantastic meal from start to finish! Steak, veal, carpaccio, lobster bisque, halibut were just cooked to perfection and were mouth watering!! I Can't wait to go back . Oh the desserts were incredible as well !!

Delicious dinner, a wonderful staff, relaxed ambiance, and fantastic dessert. I had the pork chop and it was flavorful, tender, and cooked perfectly. My wife had the strip steak which was also very tender, had a great taste, and was w pertly seasoned. Thank you to the staff of the Birchrunville Store Cafe staff for a fantastic evening. We will be back soon! We enjoyed our dinner so much, and know there is often a lengthy lead time for reservations, so just called to make out next reservation. We're already looking forward to our next visit.

AMAZING doesn't even begin to describe this place. We went for my friends birthday and ordered the venison tartar, escargot, crab cake, goat cheese croquet, rack of lamb, pork chop, filet, and the veal tenderloin. Each course was perfection and so delicious. The butterscotch dessert was also out of this world. Cannot recommend enough! Best escargot I've ever had

A real hidden gem. Locals and foodies know of this place. Such a timeless location on the back roads of Chester County. Food is fantastic and different, service is great. The old store is so cool to be in.

The taste of the food was amazing! That is the one star. The portions I thought were a joke. 1/2 baby bok Choi,sliver of carrot on the plate of rolled duck breast with bacon stuffed with foi gras the size of my pinky finger (2) of them. When we asked for more bread, we were given ends and miscut pieces. The waitress was rude and dismissive. I asked if the dessert was big enough to share she said "a teaspoon for you and a teaspoon for her, that is sharing" I never order dessert after a meal. But this time it was a choice between dessert or ordering a pizza. BYOB so no drink bill. $160/couple

Oh man, DON'T COME HERE. I took my friend here for birthday and we both really liked it. The atmosphere is super, French rustic chic, but comfortable. Doesn't feel dirty or dusty like some rustic decor interpretation. We had a bunch of appetizers, two entrees, and a dessert. Everything was accessible and the opposite of pretentious. All dishes were skillfully paired with flavors. BYOB...we brought a bunch small format bottles and cans. CASH or CHECK...leave plastic behind. We ordered a salad, snails, boar, and some other dishes which now escape me. This is a very charming spot and a beautiful place for special occasions, a family dinner without small children, and for dates. Make reservations 2-4 weeks in advance. Limited parking available on the side of the post office building or plentiful parking across the street at the cafe. Very dark and surrounded by residences and country roads. Take it easy driving especially in the dark. I was just kidding about not coming here. Just don't come too often because we want to leave space for others (-;

Venue, food and service were all top level.Physically the cafe is unique , full of character and charm. Cozy and warmth are conveyed in every inch of this establishment. Menu was different from the stuffed figs to the lobster bisque and crab cake dual appetizer. Tomahawk pork chop was succulent and perfectly cooked. Butterscotch dessert was out of this world. Will need to visit at least once each year. Negative - difficulty in obtaining a reservation( process not availability) and cash only status. Rack of Lamb looks beautiful and tasted wonderful but the kitchen should 'break' the bone so you can cut thru each separate part of the rack.

I've been coming here since 2013, and it breaks my heart to write this. This review is based on service and social distancing measures. Before I made a reservation, I was told they would sit 50% capacity with 6 feet spacing between tables. When we arrived, almost every table was filled, and the 2 empty tables left were soon to be filled. When I brought this to the attention of the hostess, she was defensive, and proceeded to tell me it was at 50% capacity. I understand that a lot of restaurants are disobeying guidelines to survive. I'm more upset that the hostess proceeded to lie to me to my face instead of owning their lack of compliance with current recommendations. Needless to say, we left. I've had this happen to me at fogo de Chao in KOP. The manager there however, took ownership that they were busy and sat more tables then they should. He apologized, and gave me a $25 gift card. Like I said, the dissatisfaction with birchrunville was how the hostess handled the situation.

This restaurant has max 12 tables, but boy, is it worth it! We went for a birthday and all staff were extremely attentive. Couple of notes - it is BYOB (yay for your check :)) and cash/check only, so just keep that in mind. Now with that out of the way...THE FOOD. It was amazing. We had parsnip soup topped with pheasant, as well as veal bone marrow. Both were amazing. For salad, we had the butternut squash salad (nothing to write home about here). Entrees were the snapper and scallops, and then the venison. The venison was a little smaller of a piece than expected, but quite heavy so totally ok. Both plates were wiped clean. We ended the evening with a sparkler (thank you BSC staff!) on top of the lava cake which was ooey-gooey. Can't wait to come back here!

Top notch restaurant! I recommend to all my out of town guests and suggest they call way in advance as it is a wait to get reservation. Only two seatings per night. Set in gorgeous Chester County in the woods with candles glowing throughout. French country flair. My favorites: the appetizer that is tiny filled dough purses / varies The appetizer that is a small version of a white sauce mushroom lasagna I wing it for dinner as it changes so much and is a small menu. Lacks pasta dishes :( though. Lot of meat and game; some seafood/fish. Not a great choice for individuals with food limitations/ intolerances or allergies though Small but filling portions - BYOB - dessert not unique

Been a while since we've been here- and as usual it took us quite a while (months) to make the reservation at this popular BYOB. The Current incarnation of Birchrunville is a improvement from my last visit in 2008 or so. A simplified menu, executed well, and good service made for a good experience. A bit pricey, but the dishes were tasty and presented nicely. The ambience is very country French - casual upscale. Our apps - beef cheeks over pappardelle, and truffle lasagna were quite good. The rack of lamb and veal porterhouse were outstanding- cooked perfectly medium Rare. Deserts- chocolate covered peanut butter cheesecake and a blood orange sorbet with fresh berries and a splash of vodka were both spot on. Tab for four (Sans wine of course) was $270 with tip. If it wasn't for the long wait for reservations I'd do it more often...

Birchrunville is a unicorn. Mythical and magical. Hard to find and even harder to get a reservation. Deep in the rolling verdant hills, cut by creeks and ponds, down a winding road to a crossroads, the Cafe on one corner and the Butterscotch on the other. Climbing the stairs to the porch which is now has two tables for outdoor dining. Large windows on either side of the door are filled with wine corks. This is a BYOB, and many bottles have been opened here. The dining room as the rustic appeal of an old general store with walls painted the color of warm evening sunlight. Our bottle of Chardonnay was deposited into a ice bucket as we were led to our table. Service was good, but not remarkable, maybe because the servers were still wearing masks. The menu changes weekly. There were about 12 apps including oysters and half a dozen entrees. We started with salads. Both were beautifully composed and absolutely delicious. We're light eaters and wanted dessert, so we chose appetizers for the main. My friend had the crab cake with lobster bisque. She thoroughly enjoyed it. I had a taste of the bisque it had a lovely intense lobster flavor. The also offer the bisque as a soup course. Definitely getting that next time. I had the bone marrow topped with oxtail. It was a small amount of rich meaty heaven. Topped with pickled vegetable, nice contrast. Beautifully plated resting on roasted potato wedges. Of the six dessert offering we chose the peach gelato and opera cake. Both delicious and plated with berries. We'd been there for two and a half hours and it flew by. We took our time enjoying the food, as soon as one course was finished, the next arrived soon after. Until next time.

Wonderful meal in a truly special place. This was our second time eating here, and it really was excellent. We were so grateful to be squeezed in for a last minute reservation. It's such a cozy and romantic place. The dishes are beautifully presented, yet still simple and rustic. The love pillows were super flavorful- I love the sage-- as was the fig salad with fresh greens (delicious dressing!) The pork chop looked and tasted amazing! It was cooked perfectly. My husband really enjoyed the boar as well. Of course, I had to get one of Jane's desserts-- the lemon cake with chantilly cream. Delicious. The chef came out to say hello, and even threw in a bonus shot of lobster bisque before dinner. Much appreciated! We will definitely be back many times.

After months of hearing how good this place is I finally had a chance to try it last weekend. The other reviews describe this place accurately. Small, quaint, old Post Office. BYOB. The appetizer portions are small, so order a few and share. Your entree will be a perfect portion so you won't leave feeling disgusting lol. I had the "Love Pillows" which consisted of gnocchi in some kind of sauce you had to mix around before eating. Delicious! Also had a croquet over arugula. Very tasty. For dinner I had the Ribeye which was cooked to perfection. For dessert it was raspberry crème brûlée. This place is legit, get on the reservation list

Always a great meal paired with professional, courteous servers. We've been with friends, sent friends for special occasions...the meal is always creative, delicious and rotating. Bravo for being the best BYOB restaurant in 10 miles.

So many things to say about my favorite restaurant. My husband and I have been coming here for almost 10 years. When we first moved to the area we got a recommendation from a neighbor, he said there was a restaurant in an old post office? (It's not actually in the post office, we later learned) We researched and couldn't believe our eyes - a top 5 restaurant in the area (SEPA) was a few miles from us. And so our love affair began. Let's begin with just getting there, a curvy road through rolling bucolic hills. And then, like a mirage, there it is - an old general store at a 4 way stop with an old gas pump out front. A beautiful little spot with a babbling brook right there to boot. Entering the space, you feel like you're walking into someone's living room and the waitstaff greets you like you have. Let me spend a minute on the wait staff. We have brought many couples along to enjoy this experience with us, and every time they comment on how the waitstaff truly makes the experience so special. They are so warm, authentic and knowledgeable. And loyal! Some of the same faces month after month, year after year. Impressive. They deserve every tip they get and then some. If you're going, make sure you reward them for it. Now let's talk about Chef Francis. Oh Francis... It's rare to find a chef who so consistently nails all of the flavors you like in combinations you couldn't have imagined. I've had exotic meats like Kanagaroo and Skate Wing and experienced many 'best thing I ever ate' like Love Pillows (the most fluffy, heavenly gnocchi), bone marrow to die for, veal medallions with foie gras on top (which was so good we still ask if he's hiding some back there every time we go), seafood trios and carpaccio with deep flavor, brined fish that I dreamt about for months, lobster bisque/crab cake so good that my husband literally licked the bowl. I could go on, which i will for a quick sec, the Pheasant! The lamb! The oysters! I delight in reading his menu and discovering surprise additions, usually met with a squeal of excitement from my face. There are times where I've ordered 4 appetizers for just the 2 of us because I couldn't decide. I feel so fortunate that he's taken over this corner of the culinary world, he could easily have chosen a major city to make his mark. And yet here he is, in the tiny little ville of Birchrun, even adding to it with the incredible Butterscotch Pastry Shop which has turned into a weekly tradition in our family. Lastly, let's talk about how they've managed COVID. This irks me because of a recent review they got which is completely UNFAIR. Crushing a review on Yelp can damage any business' reputation. They have been absolutely compliant with the capacity limitations allowing for distancing, masks have been consistent and they even added table separators. They are so compliant in fact, that when we were there last Sept sitting outside and the table next to us was so cold that they decided to move themselves indoors the waitstaff was so upset. They told them they were putting their customers at risk by going indoors and did whatever they could to remove them. You should know the facts before leveling charges at a restaurant and then accusing them of lying. Are YOU an inspector for the state? Did you measure the capacity yourself? If you're uncomfortable with being out, don't go out. But don't drag a restaurant down with you.
