Review of Birchwood Cafe in Yellowknife, Canada (4 Stars) Birchwood Cafe is a charming spot and probably the best place in Yellowknife to grab a quality coffee. My wife and I stopped by for breakfast, and overall, it was a lovely experience with just a few minor points keeping it from being a full five stars. I ordered a hot vanilla latte, which was excellent—smooth, perfectly balanced, and just the right amount of sweetness. My wife opted for the iced vanilla latte, and she agreed it was just as fantastic. It’s clear they take their coffee seriously, and it shows in the taste and presentation. We both tried the sausage breakfast sandwich on our first visit and it was fresh-tasting with quality ingredients. The bun was soft, the egg cooked perfectly, and the overall combination was satisfying. My only critique is that the sausage itself, while locally made (a nice touch!), had a bit of a bland flavor that didn’t quite stand out. Still, I appreciated the effort to use locally sourced ingredients, which adds to the cafe’s charm and ethos. The breakfast sandwich with bacon proves to be our favorite offering, just add cheese. One downside to the experience was the lack of WiFi, which might be a drawback for those looking to work or linger while enjoying their coffee. However, the cozy ambiance and friendly staff made up for it, and it’s a great spot to relax and recharge. In summary, Birchwood Cafe is a delightful place to enjoy a well-crafted coffee and a fresh, locally inspired meal. While the sausage wasn’t quite to my taste, everything else was excellent, and I’d definitely recommend it to anyone visiting Yellowknife. It’s a standout among local cafes and worth a visit.

We came to Yellowknife for a weekend and found this great cafe across from our hotel. The staff were super friendly, the pecan sticky bun was delish, and our barely was amazing and well priced! Highly recommend this local cafe!

My partner and I stopped by around 4pm during the week mid-December 2023. It was quite crowded, but it was a cozy atmosphere. There are four seats at the front window counter, three tables of four, and two tables of two, plus four comfy chairs in the back. We got the soup of the day (a lentil and veggie concoction which was tasty), a chai latte (not the most flavourful that I've ever had, but good enough), and an espresso (which my partner said was really great, and he's a pretty big coffee snob). They have a rewards card where once you buy 9 drinks you get your tenth (medium sized) for free. FYI there is no WiFi.

Limited seating and no free WiFi. Food is good value and delicious.

Limited seating and tourists taking up 4 seats when only needing two made it difficult to enjoy a hot drink. We ended up sitting at the main entrance without a table. With that said, the staff were friendly, drinks were good, and the place was clean. The mocha was a nice balance of coffee and chocolate. I like that they had food options internationally. Filipino, Japanese, and even Native inspirations like Bannock. Hope my review helps!

This is a very lovely and cozy cafe that I can’t recommend enough if you’re in Yellowknife. They have a big drink and food menu and lots of alternative milk options. I had the bannock BLT and latte with oat milk, both of which were great. They don’t open on the weekend though so keep that in mind.

Yelp
Great place for breakfast or brunch. My family came by multiple times and loved all of our choices. For breakfast we had the sausage sandwich and smoked salmon bagels which were delicious-just the right amount of pickled onion. Then one day we had the lentil soup and Buddha bowl which were delicious and a nice healthy option. My absolute favorite was the waffle with berries and syrup so tasty. Coffee drinks were an iced vanilla latte, excellent and not too sweet, a generous americano and the house drip coffee. Service was friendly and quick. Just a great place to spend time in, the decor was very Scandinavian with clean lines and tasteful artwork by local artists. Thoroughly enjoyed visiting this cafe.

Yelp
Delicious sandwiches. Stopped for a quick bite and the grilled cheese sandwiches were yum! The coffee and matcha are good too. Nice environment, clean and friendly. Would definitely stop by again.

Yelp
Good lunch menu with a variety of drink options. More seating than Barren Ground coffee. Be sure to try their bannock dishes. Table service can be hit-and-miss. My friend's drink was served by staff but my drink had to be picked up from the countertop table.

Yelp
More of a cosy cottage style coffee shop. They serve deserts and sandwiches. The Banach sandwiches are good but small. The wraps aren't wraps but quesadilla style sandwiches. Lattes and London fog. Great place to chat or chill. Prices are reasonable.

Yelp
Great friendly, homey place in downtown. Not a big fan of bannocks(too greasy), but that's not on them. There were a lot of great food and beverage options.

Yelp
Good service and good coffee. Not like a chain coffee shop. Interior design was a bit odd but that is what makes it unique.

Yelp
Every time I return to Yellowknife my sister suggests The Birchwood Cafe for coffee, tea, a snack. It is a fairly small place but clean and comfy. There is a sofa and chairs at the far end of the place for a larger group. Windows on both ends of the cafe provide nice natural light. Good coffee, tea. I am not sure if the biscuits should be called bannock as bannock is supposed to be made with lard and fried. The accompanying jam was disappointing. The sandwiches are okay but a signature sandwich might be cool. If Birchwood Cafe is going for a comfortable drop in venue then their mission has been accomplished.

Yelp
This is my go-to place for breakfast. The coffee served up here is fantastic. I typically get a latte, and I'm not sure who roasts their coffee beans, but there is a richness in that coffee. Mmmmm So Good ! The Staff are very friendly and Birchwood is a great place to either take a break from your work day and enjoy a coffee or conduct a quick 1-on-1 meeting. I have tried a number of the food items as well. Muffins are great, as well as the more substantial lunches. Salmon on Bannock is a fave. Where else can you find that ? Definitely give Birchwood a try if you are in the area.
