3 Best Day Trips from Orlando, Florida | Condé Nast Traveler

"Who doesn't love manatees and the chance to swim with them? Bird's Underwater has been running tours for years from a dive and snorkel shop right on the docks. Board pontoon boats and take the short ride to the spring heads where the manatees gather. The animals are attracted to the relatively warm water of the springs, which stays around 72 degree in the winter (when the Gulf of Mexico gets much colder). January, February, and March are the best times to go. Baby manatees are often very curious, and seeing one through your mask underwater laying alongside its mother nursing is something you won't soon forget. While you're not allowed to swim after the animals in chase, there's nothing to say they can't approach you for a curious nuzzle, and they often do." - Terry Ward, Laura Ratliff

My experience of underwater swimming with manatees with Bird's Underwater was simply incredible! The early morning started with an exciting adventure - we swam in clear and warm waters, observing large and even small manatees with their mothers. It was truly a magical sight! Our guide was the perfect companion in this underwater world. He was kind, cheerful, and caring, treating us to delicious pastries and sharing fascinating facts about manatees. His good mood was infectious, and he always led us to the best spots to observe these amazing marine creatures. Without exaggeration, it was the best underwater swimming experience of my life! I cannot express enough how much I enjoyed this amazing adventure with Bird's Underwater and I recommend it to anyone who wants to experience unforgettable moments in the embrace of nature. Thank you to Bird's Underwater for such a magical day underwater!

We went swimming with the manatees last Sunday at 6am, I thought it was too early, but the truth is it was perfect. Our guide Kayla was fantastic, super cheerful and energetic. Captain Kip was brilliant in getting us to the manatees quickly. Manatees are truly wonderful animals, calm and beautiful, it was without a doubt an unique experience. We were two adults and a 9 year old child and we all loved the experience. It was the highlight of our vacations. When I was looking for a company to swim with the manatees, my concern was to find one that respected the well-being of the manatees and with "birds under water" that was totally the case. They are clearly passionate about manatees and they respect them very much. Totally recommend birds under water.

We had a great experience with Bird Underwater! Captain Kip and Zack were great guides. The first spot we tried didn’t have manatees, and our guides worked quickly to communicate with surrounding boats to find us some. We ended up in an amazing area with 30+ manatees - including a baby and mama. They talked a lot about the conservation efforts in the area and how Crystal community works to preserve the species. The tour was early 6 AM, but it was worth it because it wasn’t packed with tourists. Would recommend bringing a jacket as the boat did get chilly! Certainly an amazing experience - bring your go pro!

Have gone twice now, once in February and once in March. Had a great time with different crew members each time. The staff is very friendly & attentive to guests and respectful of wildlife. It’s especially nice that they show a short video about swimming respectfully with manatees in the office before heading out. Obviously each tour is unique as these are wild animals. There were slightly more manatees in February but we had some very friendly, interactive manatees on the March tour. 10/10 recommend.

Tour guides and very knowledgeable and helpful as well as kind. Even though it’s summer and there are significantly less manatees compared to winter, our instructor Anna showed us a great spot to see a manatee and school of fish, absolutely surreal. She also took amazing photos. Our captain, Owen was extremely knowledgeable about manatees and let us know just about everything about them while being entertaining and engaging.

I can’t express how over the moon we are with our tour today. It was incredible. Our guides (Anna and Mike I think?) were so friendly, knowledgeable, and welcoming. We saw a manatee and the water was a little cloudy (no one has control over that unfortunately) but then they made sure to maximize our experience so we went snorkeling in crystal clear waters to look at the bubbling underwater springs and numerous fish. I recommend bringing an underwater camera/case just to capture more moments but can not speak highly enough of this place. They have inclusive sizes of wet suits and the ladder into the boat is friendly towards most able-humans. We WILL be coming back again, there is no doubt!!

Adam and Michael were so amazing!! They taught us so much and we really enjoyed everything. There weren’t many manatees, due to the time of the year, but they did everything possible to make sure we got to see some. We will definitely go back!

This was the second time that we snorkeled with manatees at Bird’s Underwater. We last went in 2017 so it had been a few years. Their boat captains and guides are very knowledgeable and patient with our kids. The wetsuits and masks/snorkels were of high quality and everything was clean. I highly recommend going out with them!
