20 Best Small Towns in Australia

"Famous for its classic Outback pub, The Birdsville Hotel, and its annual horse races held on the first weekend of September, blink-and-you'll-miss-it Birdsville is a quintessential stop on a Queensland road trip. Also host to the world's most remote country music festival, Big Red Bash, Birdsville lies in close proximity to the Simpson Desert (Munga-Thirri National Park), with scenic flights over its golden sand dunes, as well as Lake Eyre in nearby South Australia, bookable through the hotel." - Travel + Leisure Editors

We travelled Rex Airlines from Brisbane for five nights in Birdsville. This was a Bucket List item specifically to see the Channel Country and we were not disappointed in any aspect of our outback stay. |We did the two hour flight to Lake Machattie to the north, and the next day the half day Lake Eyre and William Creek flight in perfect weather, we would highly recommend not to miss either of these flight experiences. The flights are conducted professionally in high wing Cessna aircraft, ideal for scenic viewing. From the air the Channel Country fascinates endlessly with its uniqueness, colour, beauty, interest and variable landscapes. |We also booked the Big Red Sunset Tour through the hotel. An informative town tour precedes "Sundowners" atop Big Red and again it was an experience we were pleased not to have missed.|The Birdsville Hotel provides modern Motel style accommodation with free Wi-Fi. Lunch and Dinner in the Hotel offers a menu choice with daily specials, all good quality fare. The Bakery and Karrawa Wirinya also offer optional breakfast, lunch or coffee. No matter where we were, across the board staff were friendly, obliging and efficient. |In summary, a most memorable and enjoyable holiday experience.

From the Welcoming reception to the accommodation., the catering and refreshments. It's the people that made our stay marvellous. Our flight over Lake Eyre - we had a fabulous time on the morning flight. Our Pilot was so full of information and knowledge. Not only of the land, but the Stations and challenges of the Outback. We learned so much. We were impressed with all the staff. They were more than staff, they were a well oiled team that really cared about each other, about the comfort of their guests. The staff were a standout, making sure not only was there always an available and friendly accommodating face, but also they had answers or sought information to assist you. The Bar staff, the catering and wait staff, housekeeping staff and tour guides. All were enthusiastic and ensured all guests were welcomed and catered for. The catering was excellent. Considering the difficulties of ensuring fresh food available and presented, I was amazed at the variety and quality, it was a good tasty selection. WE were there for six days and five nights and I would say it was the best holiday ever.

Stayed a night in the fabulous Birdsville Hotel before crossing the Simpson. Super clean rooms. Great meals with fast and friendly service. Special shout out to Ella on reception - she is a legend.

A little disappointed by indifferent staff at reception and on the phone - we were so excited to be there but didn’t feel very welcome. Food ok, rooms comfortable and quiet. Very handy laundry was appreciated. Wifi listed but not working - no Netflix etc. - for that price we expected better.

Have just enjoyed an evening meal in the iconic Green Lizard Lounge at the Birdsville Hotel. So glad we booked our table the pub was huming. Staff were super friendly, and even though it was busy, our meals arrived in less than 20 minutes from ordering. I can't imagine a trip to Birdsville would be complete without a meal at the pub.

We particularly enjoyed the hospitality at the Birdsville Hotel. I also had the privilege of flying over Lake Eyre with Kay as the pilot. She is a very accomplished pilot and gave a wonderful commentary. Because she lived and worked in central Australia for many years, her knowledge and insight gave us a great experience.||The staff at the Birdsville Hotel were amazing. They were very friendly and helpful and most of all, they spoke very highly of Kay and her husband, the owners of the hotel and bakery. Australia is in good hands with young entrepreneurs and workers like this.

Absolutely iconic - bring back the owners with character and essence. Temporary bar staff don't bring these qualities to this great historic and community saving place. Have visited numerous times over the previous ten years and Birdsville deserves long standing heart-of-the-earth people for the pub.
