15 Best Hiking Trails in Sedona, According to Locals

"A short two-mile route beginning at the Long Canyon Trailhead that stays easy until a final climb into a cave; once inside, hikers are rewarded with an impressive valley-and-mountains viewpoint, but the final approach can be slippery and includes a high ledge, so caution is advised." - Evie Carrick Evie Carrick Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. Birthing Cave

Google
The Birthing Cave trail is perfect for beginners — it’s a relatively easy hike with a huge payoff at the end. The view from the crest of the cave is absolutely breathtaking and makes the short trek completely worth it! It can get pretty crowded at peak times, and parking can be tricky depending on the time of day, so I recommend going early. Overall, it’s a beautiful and unique spot that’s well worth visiting. Highly recommend!

Beautiful and quick hike to the cave!!! Very tranquil at the sunset. I started off at the Long Canyon Trailhead. The fork to the Birthing Cave is not marked. Instead, there is a log in front of it. Look at the picture below, right where there is a sign for trail you need to take a left turn behind the log towards the cave. That’s a quick and easy way!

This is a longer hike but worth the climb we were there in the morning so we were alone but be aware this is a hike we did it with kids ages 5,6,8,9 and it was long. Our kids are used to hiking though I would not recommend this for kids who are not used to hiking. Google also gave us wrong directions for hiking, it was longer hike than expected because there was no right turn on the trail as google suggested.

The trail is not marked where you have to make a left off the main trail, but there is a fence that you would pass through to continue on the main trail (Long Canyon), make your left there and walk towards the ridge in front of you

We ended up getting lost and took the long route around the entire mountain. Thankfully it was a beautiful day but once you find the janky fence that marks the trail towards the cave be careful on the slippery incline at the top. The views are epic and totally worth the hike.

Make sure to bring a map or all trail app to find the path! Me so many hikers on the way who couldn’t find the path. The view from cave is absolutely stunning. The place got busy after we arrived. We left the parking lot around 7:30 am so I recommend to wake up early and start the hike before 7:30 to be able to enjoy the quietness of the cave before 30 people are packed into the small cave taking turn taking selfies!

Pretty good hike, nice views but I got lost on the way down because they’re were like 20 different trails. How did pregnant women get up this hill? Too steep, poorly marked. Good views however. No good parking and nearly damaged car when we parked on dirt.

Google
Recommend using all trails map.to find your way as part of the trail is not marked. Most of the hike is easy but the end does get steep. Worth it for the views and pictures though.

Yelp
Not a bad hike here, once you get close to the base of the rock it goes straight up pretty much but it was100% worth it. Great place to sit up there and eat lunch and soak in nature.

Yelp
This is a fairly easy hike, until you get about 20 feet away from the cave. At that point, you are climbing up over rocks, at a fairly steep angle, but there are lots of bigger rocks to grab on to. Park at the Long Canyon trailhead on Long Canyon road. When you get to the map board, on the west side of the road, head straight, not off to the left. You will walk on fairly flat, mostly sandy ground, in and out of shade, for maybe a mile. Iron wood shrubs/trees, with their beautiful red rubbed bark, line the trail, along with various species of cacti, agave and yucca. You'll come upon a sign pointing you to the left. Continue following the trail for about a half mile until you come out to a sort of clearing. To the right, you will see what looks like fencing, and a clear trail. You don't want this. You want to head off to the left across the clearing. Somewhere over to the left you will see a trail. THIS is the trail you want. Follow this for about another half mile to the cave. I recommend the AllTrails app for a downloadable map. Total length of the trail is almost 2 miles, one way. This particular trail (Long Canyon trail connecting to Birthing Cave trail) is not a loop, but it links up with several other trails for even longer hikes. If you're looking for a fairly easy, scenic trail, this is it. The cave is a nice place to rest before heading back, and the views are truly beautiful. 54/2023

Yelp
This place is awesome! Pretty easy hike! - Go left when the trail signs say go right (right is for long canyon trailhead). - the top of the trail looks like a half dome, not a cave - there is a tiny bird nest looking "hole" at the top of the half dome and you do NOT need to climb up there to get the photo - sit on the ledge at your comfort level and select the 0.5 panoramic option on your cell phone photo app and take the pano vertically from bottom to top to get the iconic photo you're looking for - we went at 3-4pm and the sun was in our eyes the whole way up but beautifully illuminated the scenery looking out from the top - the trail is really not hard even at the steepest part at the top. There are lots of rocks to use as steps and to hold onto.

Yelp
Such a fun hike, easy hike. The only time it gets more difficult is in the cave it gets a little slippery on the rock
