Bishop Peak

Had this mountain on my list to climb for a while. Parked on Patrica St. and caught the trail there. Noticed warning signs for robberies that had occurred and to beware. I saw zero threats. Trail is nice. The backside gets HOT! Start early in the summer months. Enjoy the geological features because you don't see something like this every day! The rocks at the top are steep and slippery, use caution. The view is worth the climb!

Excellent moderate hike. The peak is 1546’ above sea level. It is also a place to rock climb.

The Foothill trail to Bishop peak starts as a steep walk and it just gets steeper and rockier. The trailhead from Highland Drive is a better option for a gentler, more gradual slope . I hiked this more challenging route and was rewarded with spectacular views all the way up the nearly treeless route. About a quarter mile up I came across horses in the path, both young and old. As I neared the intersection with the main trail from Highland drive, the trail became very steep and was more like rock climbing, with lots of loose rocky soil mixed with boulders. After you hike up, you will understand why this is the most popular hike in San Luis Obispo. From the top you can see many of the nine sister volcano mountain plugs. Bishop Peak is the tallest at 1,559 feet. On a very clear day you may be able to see Morro Rock at 576 feet. You can see my trail view using the link at the top. Great hike! Short (1.9 miles), but with good elevation gain (just over 1,100 feet). Rocky trail which would be muddy and potentially slick after a rain, but very well maintained. Not much space at the peak and even on a Monday it was pretty crowded, but a great addition to the hikes in the area.

This is a great hike with phenomenal views! It can be tough for some people, especially the Foothill Trailhead, but it is worth all the effort. I have been up to the top 40+ times and the scenery never gets old; I would highly recommend!

Worth the hike - It will take about an hour to get to the top, and the trail is about a medium (easy for seasoned hikers). Dogs are allowed on the trail and poop bags are provided at the trail head in case you forget. Someone also left a dog bowl chained to the benches at the top of the peak so your dog can drink. Every step you go the view just keeps getting better and better - on e of the best trails I've ever hiked. CAUTION - there is A LOT of poison oak lining the trail near the beginning, remember to keep youself (and your dog) on the trail or else you are gonna have a bad time

An awesome peak to hike up! Highly recommend for anyone in San Luis Obispo that likes to hike. The main trail is a little rocky at points but gradually ascends up Bishop Peak. Thr views from the top are amazing and you have 360 degrees views of San Luis Obispo.

Great hike close to town. I liked the scrambling options you could take to get to the top. You're rewarded with awesome 360 degree views of the ocean and surrounding areas at the top
