We had just arrived in Old Quebec City after a 7hr drive from St. John NB and we were hungry! We picked the perfect place to satiate our appetites. Each bite was a flavour explosion. We had the French onion soup and beef carpaccio to start. Our mains were the duck confit, the seafood stew, and the beef cheek; each cooked to perfection and presented so beautifully. Our waiter was amazing and provided excellent service and recommendations.

Google
We had a fantastic meal and an overall wonderful evening made even better by the staff. Excellent all around! One of the best meals we had in Quebec City! Highly recommend it.

Google
An absolute little gem! We went for breakfast on May 10 2025. Eclectic and welcoming ambience. Our waitperson Camille was friendly and delightful! We met Phil, the chef ; jovial personality and GREAT chef! You must try Phil's potatoes. Their maple syrup is tasty and available to purchase( which we did)

Google
Restaurant is really cute and cozy. The food was good and felt homestyle with fresh ingredients. $30 Thursday promo was great (main plus wine/beer for $30). We felt it would have been nice to have bread at the table to start, and also to have with our mains. I ordered Ossobucco which was good but very soupy. Again the bread would have been a nice addition. My wife ordered Phil's Carbonara which was delicious. It had lots of peameal bacon. All food was portioned well, we struggled to finish it all.

Google
Absolutely superb! Came here with my partner on a Sunday night. We made a reservation because we knew we wanted to come here. Really cozy and friendly atmosphere with great food and lovely staff. As a tourist, I got the sense we were amongst many regulars, enjoying a nice meal over wine with their loved ones :). We sincerely enjoyed everything we had, which was the ravioli appetizer, the fois gras, mussels in marinière (half portion, still 1 pound so plenty!), cassoulet, and the crème brûlée. The cassoulet was our absolute favorite - so fresh and absolutely delicious. The duck meat fell right off the bone and was seasoned so perfectly. We savored every bite. The staff was so kind they gave us complimentary glasses of amaretto to enjoy with our crème brûlée. Merci beaucoup! We can’t wait to come back!!

Google
So good! We walked all over the area reading menus and looking at restaurants and stopped at Bistro St Malo almost as a last resort, but I’m so glad we chose to stay. Florence, our server was lovely and the food was delicious! I had the cassoulet, my husband had the carbonara and my mom had the seafood stew. Everything was excellent. They also have a really good house beer.

Cosy tables, 18th Century building, fantastic fun waitress, exceptional food, and the chef even engaged with a bit of fun with the patrons. Such a gorgeous restaurant, loved it.

Google
Wonderful experience at this restaurant and the food was very tasty. We ordered the French onion soup (quite a big serving for the starter size), tuna tartare, the seafood stew (amazing!) and the apple tart (so big we couldn't finish it). I would definitely order the soup again and the beef cheek looked amazing too! The food was delicious and we were definitely not hungry after this meal! Service was impeccable and food came out quickly.

Yelp
Exceptional service and food here!! First off, my server was super sweet and made sure to keep checking in. Food was excellent! The French onion soup was steaming hot (perfect for cold Quebec winter weather) and the flavor was so rich, I loved it. I got my favorite steamed mussels, and it went very well with my white wine. The restaurant was so cozy and calm, I highly recommend this spot for dates, family dinners, and solo diners (like me)!

Yelp
When in the old city St. Malo is a must! Authentic French with no bells and whistles to upsell but delicious food! Being a vegetarian I had my doubts but their hospitality will leave you in aww! It is a kid friendly place with coz seating with 2 floors. The service is very best and the chef himself cares for reach guests. Everything we had in our 2-3 visits was exceptional. I will say go with the recommendations by the chef or your server!

Yelp
Well done Chef. Ribeye was divine - I've had medium rare before but this was a perfect take on it - even cook through out the meat. I'm not a fry guy but they were very good - arrived seasoned. Duck confit was excellent albeit not my thing - I prefer the Chinese take on duck. It was perfectly cooked however and thoroughly enjoyed at the table. Desserts: the apple pie and the crème brûlée were both "smack ya momma" good. Low wooden ceiling, cozy space, wait staff made it special. Come to NYC!

Yelp
My appetizer and main course were very good, the cheesy topped escargot was delightful; my seafood stew was prepared beautifully, well seasoned and delish. Service was attentive and helpful. So why 2 stars. The other couple was not so fortunate both ordered dishes which had been sous vide advanced cooked and rethermed to order. The elevated salt levels in both orders made it barely edible. This was not the dining experience they were expecting on the first trip to Ville de Québec.

Yelp
Best described as French comfort food. Dropped in for lunch on a whim. Ample seating in a very small space. Loved the French onion soup and burrata with honey, blueberry glaze and ratatouille. The mussels with frites had five options for broth, including garlic and white wine, marinara, cream, or fromage et Dijon. Service excellent, very relaxed. Would return in a heartbeat.

Yelp
Everything about our experience at St Malo was perfect. The staff are extremely friendly and service is attentive. I had the seafood stew which was creamy and tasty. My husband had the Flank steak and frites. He said the steak was absolutely perfect. The Tarte Tartin at the end was so fresh, hot out of the oven and definitely a large portion to share.

Yelp
During a visit to Quebec last week, my husband and I had dinner at Bistro St Malo one evening. It was the best meal we had during our stay and we look forward to going back during our next visit to Quebec. The food was exceptionally good. It was well seasoned, nicely presented and the portions were perfect. The weather was nice so we decided to eat outside. We were very comfortable. The music they were playing was very pleasant and not too loud. The service was excellent. Unfortunately, I cannot find the copy of the receipt where I made sure to write the name of our server, who was a pleasure to deal with. For example, I was not familiar with any of the wines on their list so I told her what I like in a wine, she recommended one they had from Spain and it was perfect. We had a very enjoyable meal in a friendly and hospitable environment. We will be back next year!

Yelp
Came for dinner on our second night in Quebec City and one of our favorite meals. Be careful on weekdays!! They close very early (like 8:00-8:30 pm) so make sure to get a reservation or walk in early. The vibe is really nice and cozy like an old lively pub. The food does right by the French bistro name. The French onion soup was decadent without being overly saucy. The escargot blended perfectly with the cheese without being clumpy or oily. The beef cheek falls apart on the fork. Absolutely delicious and make sure you stop by if you get a chance.

Yelp
Ugh, I was so excited to come here as the reviews seem amazing. This fell very flat for me. I went with the French onion soup due to the reviews recommending that it be tried. It was just ok. Plenty of onions but the broth was more gravy like and the cheese was essentially stuck to the bread that needed cutting with a knife. I was not impressed. The beef carpaccio was aesthetically pleasing to the eye but also fell flat. We shared the Phil carbonara that tasted more like an Alfredo. Overall, very disappointed and would not go back. Service was very good. Wine list extensive. Indoor and outdoor seating. Reservations recommended. They have bread for the table but you must ask for it.

Yelp
If you eat here once it won't be your last time. The menu has several options to suit anyone's palate. My friend and I shared a few items starting with the cheesy steaming hot deep rich French Onion Soup which was delicious with all the cheese you could hope for topped onto two slices of baguette...it could have been a meal onto itself but we didn't let that stop us from eating more. I ordered the fish of the day that was lightly grilled with vierge sauce that was a great compliment for the fish. My friend had the cassoulet with duck, sausage and legumes of course and he said it was outstanding and hearty. We didn't have dessert because we were quite full but we've been back two more times since being here. Great place for a meal with seating inside and out with a lovely street scene in a great location. Service was friendly and very good. Give this place a try and you won't be sorry.

Yelp
Oh momma is St-Malo magnifique!!! The renditions are classically made, the portions are ample, the atmosphere is bustling. Highlight for us was the osso bucco... so soft and tender with a lovely rosemary infused sauce. Honorable mention, would be the French onion soup. Cheese that stretches a kilometer and onion broth with good depth that satisfies. This entire area is a tourist destination... if they take reservations, MAKE reservations if you are certain of coming.

Yelp
Being older, we chose to share our meal. We ordered onion soup, a cod dish, and an apple tatin. All were excellent! Our server made sharing seem very normal. Two spoons for the soup, an extra plate for the entree, and two plates, with additional knives and forks for rhe tatin. We arrived at dinner time on a Thursday without reservations and were seated inside immediately. Since rain was in the forecast, eating inside was preferable. The doorman at our hotel made this restaurant recommendation and it was a good one!

Robert C.

Yelp
We tried the French onion soup, escargots au gratin, seafood stew, and beef cheeks. All the dishes were excellently prepared. Our waitress Megane was friendly and accommodating. We enjoyed the Christmas decorations which provided a nice holiday spirit.
google avatar

Agnes Y.

Yelp
We had their onion soup, foie gras, and octopus salad as appetizers; beef cheek and duck legs as main course; and cream brûlée for dessert. Everything was excellent. I especially liked the beef cheek, so tender and flavorful! Our waitress was very sweet and attentive. The ambiance was lively and cute. Prices were very reasonable. Highly recommended!

Yelp
When we arrived there was a loud speaker playing right outside the restaurant playing loud Spanish music. I don't think it was connected to the restaurant but it was quite loud and disturbing, and the staff were unable to do anything about it. I attempted to speak to the staff in French, asking if there was a table for 2 available on the inside. A waiter went and left to check but never returned. A few minutes later a waitress came out and yelled at us in plain English saying "no more reservations today!" We were not upset about the lack of reservations, but how the waitress communicated to us so rudely. It was an incredibly rude interaction, and could have been communicated much more politely and in French. Needless to say, I will not attempt to come to this establishment again. The staff is unwilling to speak French and show zero politeness or any ounce of tact or friendliness. I can't speak for the food unfortunately. We ended up going to a nearby restaurant called Chez Temporel. The staff were friendly and spoke to us in French most of the time.

Yelp
So happy they squeezed me in at the bar. They took such nice care of me, recommending a delicious French stew perfect for the cold rainy night of my late arrival. Of course I had the escargot and some wonderful local beer. The place is very warm & cozy with different seating areas and well decorated with art and notes from appreciative customers. Oh, then a light dessert wine, and some sorbet with some more booze. Fortunately my hotel wasn't far, and I toddled off to sleep. Merci!

Yelp
What a lovely place! We happened upon it mid afternoon and famished. The meals were spectacular (fish stew and cassoulet) were just right. The ambience was delightful and service excellent. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Amazing and friendly atmosphere! Owner is incredibly helpful and sets a great tone for the ambience and positive vibe. The raclette is amazing.

Yelp
The ambiance is the best... great lighting, warm fire, very relaxed, while strategic decor. One of our favorite Quebec visits. Came with my spouse & had a decadent meal. This would be my regular dinner spot if I lived here, for the friendly service & classic dishes. A cozy spot that would be welcoming anytime.

Yelp
I did not dine here but walked in as it was directly opposite my hotel. Many reviews said you may need reservations but it Sunday and raining all evening and damp out. We walked in and was asked if we had reservations and we said no. The only visible hostess said the open tables already had reservations and would be arriving soon. The bar area also had two open seats. She never offered to call if anything opened. We walked back to the hotel to search for places. For 15 mins we looked for dinner places, while observing the traffic flow at the restaurant. We got there at 7pm and the place closes at 8:30pm. We went next door and walking back after to the hotel looked in to see if it was packed. Still empty tables! Don't care how good the food might be the first impression was terrible.

Yelp
we went here on vacation and the restaurant was perfect. The food was great. The staff was friendly.

Arnold M.

Yelp
The food was delicious. I had the cassoulet and it was great. My husband had the ribeye steak and it was cooked perfectly. The atmosphere was cozy in a ground floor restaurant in an old building. Zack the waiter was especially terrific. In all we had a great meal and a great time. Beware, do not drive if you go during the weekend. Get a ride! Parking is very limited!

James A.

Yelp
The 10 hour cassoulet with sausage, duck confit a white beans was on the menu in July, on a warm day. That would only happen if it was rich and amazing. It was. My wife had the escargot and a salad. We finished with an apple tartan that was outstanding. Just come here.
google avatar

Joyce U.

Yelp
Lovely bistro, excellent food, and friendly service. We had the escargot, vegetable tatin, tilapia tacos. The tacos were cold , which I was not expecting but they were delicious. For dessert we had the apple tatin with house made vanilla ice cream, it was huge, we could not finish it. Our waitress was wonderful.

Yelp
Enjoyed a lovely evening. Excellent food and service. The Ris de Veau was excellent as well as the fish stew. Service by Camille was lovely. Tables and set up could use an upgrade to match the food and prices.

John G.

Yelp
Just AMAZING!!! Phil is a terrific host. We were a table of 7 and ordered basically everything on the menu... carbonara!!! Cassoulets!!!, steak frites. Camille made us great cocktails. A must!

Anne L.

Yelp
My husband and I absolutely love this restaurant. The food is to die for, staff and owners are SO lovely. We like it so much, we had our wedding reception dinner at Bostro Saint Malo Super delicious, friendly and cosy atmosphere.

Zarina M.

Yelp
Yum! Luckily we got seated without a reservation. It was a good dinner! Ambience was interesting.
google avatar

Manny L.

Yelp
Cannot find a more friendly and professional staff headed by Phil himself. Our party started with the onion soup. Consensus best we ever had. The mussels were excellent with a buttery garlic wine sauce. Fresh warm bread. The Carbonara is something else. We came back a few days later to share a couple of them for lunch. Also had an incredibly buttery delicious Steak and Frites. This place is bucket list on any Quebec trip. The lighting and music were perfect.

Yelp
Excellent dinner! We had so much fun with the server and owners! We sang songs, enjoyed good drinks and laughed all night! Thank you for making our last meal in Old Quebec so memorable!!

Yelp
Run to St Malo if you are in the lower city. The food is marvelous and delish. Salmon appetizer and beef cheek sous-vide completely fab. So happy with service and quaint environment.

Yelp
Found this place on yelp when in Old Quebec for the day and really wanting some appropriate French food. This did not disappoint. Hubby had the escargot au gratin and the osso bucco - both excellent. And I had the duck confit with frites - so good. The skin was crisp, the meat just right. I could eat the fries all day, and the side salad had a picked vege on it that was just the right tang for my digestion. And the cider was good too!

Yelp
Just arrived in QC for the first time and by pure luck we came across this wonderful french bistro steps from our hotel (Le Germaine). Our entrees were absolutely delicious! I had the mouth watering roasted Mediterranean chicken with hummus and taro chips while my husband had the pork hamburger accompanied by the most amazing french fries. The portion sizes were generous and our server, a friendly young lady, was attentive and engaging. We were seated upstairs in a cozy room that gave off that french farmhouse vibe. We will certainly be back!

Douglas F.

Yelp
The food was outstanding. Traditional French dishes cooked to perfection. The service was also amazing. if you make a reservation you can most likely get seated downstairs, but we showed up and they seated us upstairs which was also nice. plenty of outdoor seating too. Highly recommended.

Jenny M.

Yelp
This was such a quaint restaurant with great staff and delicious food. I had the Lapin Bourguignon and my husband had Osso Bucco de porc. They were both excellent and the Tart Tatin for dessert was to die for.

Yelp
We came back this year and they finally has the Ossu Boccu on the menu! Let me tell you, I tried to come a few years back and it was never back on menu but highly recommended by foodies. I couldn't catch a reservation for this trip, but figured we could give it a try and see if they were taking walk-ins. This place was PACKED and he told us straight up that they weren't taking walk ins. I fully understood and just let them know that it's okay, we'll visit again next time we're in town. He took a look through the reservations and thankfully offered a seat for the 2 of us if we were able to wait. Heck YES I was willing to wait. This is one of my all time favourite spots in Quebec City and it's so hard to get a spot there, especially when you're constantly trying to call from out of town. Last time, we loved our food, but this time, I saw Ossu Boccu on the menu and of course I ordered it. It was the most delicious thing I've ever eaten!!! 100% if you're there and lucky enough to see it on the menu, DO NOT HESITATE TO ORDER IT! Delicious, soft, well seasoned, extremely flavourful and juicy. It's fancy with that real home comfort cooking type of feel. Basically, it fits the bar for anything I like. My boyfriend got the Duck Confit I had tried a few years back and obviously we cleared both our plates. French onion soup was top notch as always and we also wound up trying the tartar here. It was very light and a great way to get the meal going. We're going to plan far ahead next time and make sure we get a reservation. I really hope Ossu Boccu will be on the menu!!!!

Yelp
My family drives up to Quebec every year for Labor Day, and Bistro St. Malo is our favorite restaurant. We make sure to come here at least once. The fare is excellent, and the prices are very reasonable. There are certainly other restaurants that do more experimental or fancy dishes for a lot more money, but all but one were not even close to being as enjoyable at Bistro St. Malo. The restaurant itself is small, but it's in a great location in Basse Ville between lots of other shops and restaurants. The chef is wonderful and attentive (and a genius), and he always comes out to say hi and check to see if the food is good. Spoiler: the food is always amazing! Due to COVID, we sat outside, and it was still still a great experience. We had foie gras, beef tartar, mussels, and onion soup for appetizer. The foie gras was like tasty butter - super smooth and flavorful. The beef tartar had the right tartness and was fresh. And the mussels! Oh the mussels! We went on a Wednesday with unlimited mussels, and we tried two of the sauces (alfredo and mustard I think). They disappeared super fast, and that's really the best compliment one could give to a chef. For the mains we got duck confit, cassoulet, and a seafood mix (lots of seafood in some delicious sauce). Still have dreams about that duck confit. So balanced between fat and salt, and the duck just dropping off the bone. I could have eaten it with a spoon if I wanted to! I would definitely recommend trying this place! It's popular, so definitely call or stop by the day or two before (or the week before during COVID) to make sure that you have a spot. Can't wait to visit again!

Kyler F.

Yelp
This was by far the best food I had during my families trip in Quebec. Phil is such an amazing waiter and made our whole night with his personality. The lighting and decorations were also amazing. The portion sizes were big and very very flavorful.

Yelp
The issue about overcharging my credit card has been fixed by the owner/chef. He was responsive in the emails and returned my money. Now let's focus about the food. Posting pictures of my dinner at this quaint restaurant with family. I enjoyed the dishes esp the rabbit. The plates were memorable and I would come back if ever I am in the area again. ______ It it were just food I would have reacted this five star but tourists should be made aware of how I was victimized here. I ate yesterday with my family that I haven't seen for a long time so of course the conversation was animated and intense. When we asked for the check I was shocked that it came out around 30 percent more than we ordered. I didn't say anything right away but upon quick look my son noted that we were charged for two sprites that we didn't order. He told the waiter and it was changed but upon further calculations later, we realized the charge was more than what we actually spent. The restaurant is closed today so I don't know how to contact them and ask for a fix. Future diners, please beware. Make sure you check a hundred times before you pay the establishment because someone in the crew isn't being honest.

Yelp
One of the best meals I have ever had. The ambiance is cozy. The service was attentive and personable. The food was delicious. We recommend the onion soup, escargot, beef cheek, and seafood stew.

Ron B.

Yelp
We ate here last night. As other reviewers described the food was outstanding. The French onion soup was one of the best I have ever had. We also had the the seafood stew which had a variety of fish and other seafood which tasted great. Also the duck confit was very good. I asked the chef for his secret to the French onion soup. He said "red wine " and plenty of it. I think red wine is the stable of many French Restaurants. So Bon Appetit! In closing, although they were short staffed for the evening, the food came out very quickly.

Susan B.

Yelp
The fish stew was last meal good! Small place in old town that was a real delight. A friend had the cod, which sounded bland to me, but it came with a crisp crust and was so good! Our server was at the table every time we even THOUGHT we wanted something. Oh, and the mussels were plentiful and we sopped up every drop of the sauce. We all were sorry we didn't go back the next night.

M. Jonathan H.

Yelp
Very good place to go to and dine here. The service was good. the ambience great, and the food very good, our favorite was the osso bucco with orzo. The cheek was in a rich tasty sauce. If nearby come check them out.

Yelp
Definitely 5/5 They only have 3 men to take care of the whole busy restaurant, great service! We ordered 3 appetizers, 2 main courses and 1 dessert. All of them are 5/5! I'm amazed by this place. Onion soup- best onion soup I've ever had. Perfect sweetness and saltiness, with slight herbs and onion flavour, very delicious! I've had bello's onion soup and this one is way better Mussels - my friend doesn't eat mussels but he is in love with this. We had the cheese sauce and it's so tasty! Escargot- it might look small on plate but they've took out the escargot for you, no shell, no dirty finger, perfect amount of garlic and butter, with cheese. Love it Pork osso bucco- usually this part of the pork is dry and tough, but they made it tender and juicy. We didn't like orzo so we changed it to fries. Very flexible to change Beef cheek- super! The sauce is perfect and the carrot is cut in half, asparagus is crispy and the tougher part has been removed. See all the details the chef has done on this dish. The beef cheek is very soft with the perfect sauce. I like how it's not salty at all because usually people will add to much salt. I love it. Apple pie with caramel syrup and ice cream- we never expect too much from dessert because the appetizer and main course have amazed us already. We were recommend this by the waiter. Wow! The pie is very hot as it's not pre made! It just came out from the oven and they pour the warm caramel syrup on top, then added a big scope of ice cold ice cream on top, sprinkling crisps on the ice cream. Absolutely stunning dish. I was full already but I still finished the whole plate in 5min Overall I'll give it 5/5 because everything is so perfect , nothing need to be improved! It's around $70 per person after tax and tips for us (we are more than normal people haha), I would definitely come back and recommend everyone to visit this place. You might need a reservation:)

Yelp
This was amazing! The food was delicious and the service was like being invited into someone's home. We were never rushed and we left feeling like we needed a long nap. We were so full!! I will recommend Bistro St Malo to all who visit Quebec City.

Yelp
I made a reservation here last night for my fiancé's birthday. It's a nice, small restaurant with an outdoor seating. They have glass partitions for each table and the lovely servers wear proper masks. Once we got there, we received a warm welcome from the two servers who were always around if ever we needed help with the menu. We had already known what we want to order before we got here and I am happy we stuck with those choices. For appetizers, we had the Foie gras and onion soup. The foie gras is so smooth and buttery. Not that it needed anything extra to mask it with another flavour, but the fruit compote on the side was an amazing compliment to it and the bread was the perfect kind of toast to go with it. Not too hard and not too soft. The onion soup was deliciously cheesy and the onions, perfectly caramelized and sweet, very FAR from the onion soups made from powdered crap that has a strong smell that they serve in other restaurants. Now the main, I've been craving duck and I'm so happy I waited until I got to this place. They were tender, moist and flavourful. The salad with it was a bit acidic and sweet, which perfectly complimented the saltiness of the duck. My fiancé ordered the beef cheeks and it was beautifully tender, we didn't need a knife at all. The brown sauce it was in was so rich, meaty and delicious, with the sweet caramelized pearl onions and the potatoes. For dinner, I had an arrangement with the server Yan or Ian (sorry, I got his name through the phone) and he brought a cheesecake with a sparkler on top. The cheesecake was so good, not too sweet and not too heavy. The best part is they didn't charge us for it. Overall it was an amazing experience. I have nothing to complain about. The food was exquisite. You can tell the passion and the patient work that they put in them. Please skip the restaurants that masks their horrible food with blingy decorations and come to places like Bistro St Malo instead. The price was well worth it with the servings and quality of food. I will definitely come here every time I visit Quebec City.

Gary C.

Yelp
All dishes; beef cheeks, duck, seafood, were all so flavorful. Sidewalk seating with overhead heating deflected the evening chill. Knowledgable wait staff answered all our questions an was very attentive, especially considering the outside sidewalk locale. So many good choices on the menu, we'll have to go back again and try some other entrees. We all highly recommend this wonderful restaurant located in Lower Town (Basse-Ville).

Yelp
Not sure if long waits are typical but we waited half an hour ALONE to get our menus. Took another 15 minutes before we can even order after deciding, and another half hour for our appetizers to arrive. We were too scared to endure a longer wait if we ordered dessert so we didn't. We noticed another couple beside us had their meal completely forgotten sheesh. The escargot is good but too oily (dipping the bread in the oily butter sauce was nice though). French onion soup was good but nothing special. Standout was the venison ravioli. I was pleased there was no gamey flavour and the rose sauce was delicious. Overall, the food was good but not special enough to justify the wait. It's a cute, quaint cafe that oozes European. But the slow service and having only two servers in a fully packed place left a sour taste despite the good food. We took a long trek through old Quebec to make it here so we finished our meal feeling disappointed when left tired and hungry for too long.
