My family drives up to Quebec every year for Labor Day, and Bistro St. Malo is our favorite restaurant. We make sure to come here at least once. The fare is excellent, and the prices are very reasonable. There are certainly other restaurants that do more experimental or fancy dishes for a lot more money, but all but one were not even close to being as enjoyable at Bistro St. Malo.
The restaurant itself is small, but it's in a great location in Basse Ville between lots of other shops and restaurants. The chef is wonderful and attentive (and a genius), and he always comes out to say hi and check to see if the food is good. Spoiler: the food is always amazing!
Due to COVID, we sat outside, and it was still still a great experience. We had foie gras, beef tartar, mussels, and onion soup for appetizer. The foie gras was like tasty butter - super smooth and flavorful. The beef tartar had the right tartness and was fresh. And the mussels! Oh the mussels! We went on a Wednesday with unlimited mussels, and we tried two of the sauces (alfredo and mustard I think). They disappeared super fast, and that's really the best compliment one could give to a chef.
For the mains we got duck confit, cassoulet, and a seafood mix (lots of seafood in some delicious sauce). Still have dreams about that duck confit. So balanced between fat and salt, and the duck just dropping off the bone. I could have eaten it with a spoon if I wanted to!
I would definitely recommend trying this place! It's popular, so definitely call or stop by the day or two before (or the week before during COVID) to make sure that you have a spot. Can't wait to visit again!
