When I lived in Düsseldorf for 15 years, "Zicke" was one of my favourite spots—an intellectual and artistic hub with a tolerant atmosphere and truly delicious fried potatoes It used to feel like a hidden gem, welcoming to all.
Unfortunately, things have changed. The signature fried potatoes now come without onions or bacon, and the once warm, inviting vibe seems reserved only for regulars. As tourists visited from London, we felt like outsiders.
My wife ordered ravioli, but they were sold out. Without any apology from the waitress, she was served a small portion of gnocchi instead. The waitress never checked in to see if everything was okay. In contrast, when a local couple encountered a similar issue, the staff responded with profuse apologies and attentive service.
Throughout our trip to Düsseldorf, we dined at around 25 restaurants and cafés. Each time we've received a warm welcome, apart from this one.
