It makes me sad that Biwon will be someone's first experience of Korean food in Toronto.
My wife and I gave it a shot, since the price was right. Unfortunately, every dish was bad. The ban chan was a bad omen - soft, weird potatoes, limp radish, and weak kim chi, and no greens. The seafood pancake, a simple classic, was cool and soggy, yet badly burned. It was obviously not serve-able long before it got cold. Even the sauce that came with it was awful - super thin, super salty, no heat at all, just useless. It was easily the worst Korean pancake I've even had. The seafood gluten chunk dish, usually a guilty pleasure, tasted like it sounds for once - gluey and flavorless. The thin sliced beef that came with it was so dry and tough! It reminded me of my dad's "all day" pot roast - basically leather. I've never had worse. The soup tasted like a campfire for some reason. I honestly wonder if there was a fire in their kitchen - that would explain the burned pancake, too. Also, the soup was supposed to have seafood in it, but it didn't seem to have any. I've never been disappointed by Korean soup before, not ever. Literally nothing we ordered was even average. I could see making an excuse for a second star since we did eat the unburned half of the pancake and some of the soup, but not when the competition is so much better.
Do yourself a favor and get Korean from any one of the dozens of excellent Korean restaurants, instead! Really, we have many treasures to choose from. Don't let Biwon ruin your opinion of the entire cuisine.
