This is a review of the Sunday party at Bla (from the perspective of a tourist).
First, out of all of the Scandinavian cities I visited (Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo), Oslo definitely seemed the rowdiest (in a good way). The Norwegians know how to have a good time, and they are well acquainted with beverages. Bars were really boisterous and fun, and when the 3 am close happened, everyone was out on the street eating kebabs and 7-11 hot dogs smothered in mayo (seriously, everyone, even the fashion killers in five inch heels).
So it makes sense that the atmosphere at Bla on Sunday followed suit. You walk into a large outdoor area next to a canal. There are picnic tables and chairs everywhere. There is a ping pong table in the back. There is a large bar, as well as a grill serving up tasty looking burgers. And there are a lot of people drinking and having a good time. Pretty cosmopolitan, fair number of English / Spanish / Portuguese / German speakers in the house. Reminded me of a European version of Zeitgeist (San Francisco knows what I'm talking about).
The outdoor area is adjacent to a warehouse space. When you walk into the space, you step into a foyer, with restrooms to the left and a lounge to the front (nothing special). To the right, there is a large hall where the band plays. When I saw reviews of a twenty piece band, I had visions of Glenn Miller or Brian Setzer Orchestra in my head (this made me nervous). In reality, the band played mostly rockabilly, surf rock, ska, and reggae (this made me happy). They did a great ska rendition of Dead Kennedy's Too Drunk to Fuck. The band stops around 11 pm or so, and then a DJ takes over and spins old Motown and soul records, which is really awesome. Reminded me of parties at the Hideout (Chicago knows what I'm talking about).
We got there at 8 pm with no line at all. There were a ton of people inside and out. There is definitely a crew of day drinkers who pick up and leave at night, and there is definitely a crew that comes at night. The line looked like it started around 10 or 11 and was constant through pretty much close, around the building. So get there early and drink those $11 beers. For $13, you can get a can of Ska's Modus Hoperandi. Because, ya know, themes.
In short: awesome Sunday fun day. Especially in the summer.
