Black Bear Diner Madras

Huge portions, friendly service. Food was made fresh, they were very tasty. Worth the drive from Kah-Nee-ta Hot Springs. I had the Chicken Ceasar Melt, which I haven't had anything like that before. It was excellently made. The cheese was gooey 😋 as do in all melts. It was like a club sandwich with grilled chicken and cheese with lettuce and tomato. Well done Black bear, we'll done 👏🏼. I would recommend Black Bear Diner if you crave a hearty brunch. I will definitely be back. I also bought this huge Berry Bear Claw to go (Sorry, no pictures, it was bigger than my hand 😆). This was my first time here. Their handed me a news paper, I was like cool. It ended up being a menu. This place was awesome.

Bigfoot chicken fried steak was half of what it should have been the portion was smaller than a piece of bread. I ordered wheat bread they gave me white. All the food was cold. The meat tasted rancid. Some old man was handling everybody’s sides on plate – wiping his hands on his pants and grabbing the next plate and doing it again. Service was disgusting as well. Do not recommend Madras black bear!

We are thankful for this little oasis just outside of the Warm Springs Indian reservation Madras, Oregon. We had a little wait but don't you usually for any place that's good. The menu is loaded with options and various plates. The atmosphere is great and the servers are kind and attentive.

What a fun place to dine! The bear motif was endearing! Great service , tasty meals with big portions. Wish we had these in Atlanta

Came to town from Florida for a short stay and decided to get dinner here and kill some time. The food was absolutely amazing. And hospitality was unmatched.

The food was super yummy and we really enjoyed it! It did take a while for our food to come out, but once it did, it was worth the wait. We’d definitely come back again!

We have always been pleased with the meals and service we receive here. Their taco salad revils any Mexican restaurant. It's huge with generous portions of all the toppings. Both seasoned beef and grilled chicken are great options. It's a great place where the whole family or group will find something for them on their extensive menu. Breakfast is served all day, and there are specials every day. This particular location is older but well taken care of. I have always felt that this chain is underrated. Oh, don't forget to purchase a huge bear claw on your way out.

I used to think this was the best Black Bear of all of thier restaurants. But I just had the worst dinner ever. I ordered steak and fries. Medium rare. I received a over the top well done shoe leather paired with old tough French fries. I know this isn't a steak house but usually their small steak is just right. And it's easy to prepare...right? Not tonight. Waitress told me to tell them the next time I come in. No next time.

First time going to Black Bear Diner and it was fine. We got the Fish & Chips and the Parmesan Sourdough Burger with a Veggie Patty. The food and service is about what you'd expect for a diner chain. The portions were huge for what you pay. Not a lot of vegetarian options.

This was a great meal, it was my first time trying a Black Bear Diner. I ordered the specia,l which was Prime Rib Sandwich with Au Ju Dip on the side, I made it a deluxe, which added grilled onions, mushrooms and cheese, with onion rings. I also ordered a side salad on the side. The sandwich was delicious, I didn't even need the dip on the side, our waitress, Kimberly, was amazing and brought me horseradish sauce and mayo on the side. One of the best sandwiches I have had !!! I did take a star away for the salad, it was huge, but it was a majority lettuce. There were maybe 3 tiny tomatoes, 4 halve slices of cucumber and a little pile of shredded carrots, way too much lettuce !!!! My husband ordered the meatloaf with mashed potatoes, brown gravy and broccoli. He really liked it, he ate every bite !!! I would definitely come back and the food was so delicious.

The restaurant is well decorated with a variety of bear features. The service and food were both excellent.

My family gathered for brunch after a ceremony on the Warm Springs reservation. Location was right off the main road and parking was easy to find. We had a rather large group but had no issues getting a table after a short wait (less than 30 mins). Although I've seen this chain on multiple occasions, this was my first visit. My only hesitation in the past were mixed reviews, but this location put them all to rest. Our table was served promptly with plates of waffles, desserts, omelets, breakfast burritos, and all the drinks. Everyone raved and humored my request for photos. The bear / cabin decor was so kitsch and on point. Wonderful choice to fuel our bodies before our trips home to multiple states.

Large potions. Kinda of blank but the black bear diner is always fun. Service was quick. Prices are average. Nice big kids menu.

We stopped by for breakfast on Thanksgiving. The hostess seated us immediately as they weren't yet busy. Everything inside was neat and clean, and with a friendly interaction with the hostess, things seemed on track for a good experience. Unfortunately, our service from that point on wasn't great. Our order was taken fast, but our server wasn't friendly or attentive. He left our ticket with the plates when he dropped them off and never checked in until we were finished. With empty mugs we couldn't even get his attention for a coffee refill...and the other server, whom we were able to eventually flag down, was clearly put off by having to do it. Ultimately we felt somewhat out of place and kind of unwelcome, as most of the tables were obviously regulars (called by name) being well-tended to by all staff with a smile. As for the food, we ordered 2 egg plates. Everything on mine was cooked well, but my husband's potatoes were quite undercooked: most chunks were still hard, the peppers raw, nothing crispy. But, no one checked as we were eating so no remedy there. Not a great meal experience. We pass through the area often, but wouldn't want to return here unfortunately.

I'm kind of excited to learn Black Bear Diner is a national chain and that there are a few in Colorado! Had dinner at this one while traveling in Oregon. Madras is such a small town most of the eateries were closed by 8pm! Good thing we found this diner. It's so "late" the clam chowder is more like porridge than soup, lol. But at least they still served warm soup! Salad was still fresh and you could have breakfast items like grits if your heart so desires! Had the salmon and it was served with a lot of vegetables, another plus. The Santa Maria Tri-Tip was as tender as the salmon! The only sad thing is I didn't get dessert here. I could only imagine how decadent the pies would be. More reason to check out a Black Bear Diner here at home!!

Stopped by for a bite to eat on our way to Washington. Long wait but definitely worth it. We were greeted by a young person whom we later found out was named Jocelyn. She had a friendly welcoming smile and never let our drink become empty. Highly recommend this location if you're passing through Madras Oregon. You won't be disappointed especially if Jocelyn is on shift.

The kitchen staff need a raise!!! One of the best on the west coast. Stopped on a road trip and had a great experience

If you're going to eat here, I suggest you don't come for diner the staff working tonight don't seem to give a rip about customer service they are far more interested in chatting and goofing off, No one acknowledged us at the door and then took our order brought our food and never came back. we normally stop here for Breakfast when we pass thru and never have had an issue, But the last few times we have stopped for Dinner and the service has been terrible. It just seems like these young people could care less Very disappointing

I don't care for the Black Bear in Madras. 1. Service. They bring water or drinks it's 10 to 15 minutes when they're not busy to come and ask if we want anything. 2. When we order salads, they don't give us our salads until right before we have our dinner so we have both the same time even though we ask for the salads before dinner. 3. They forget half of my order not my husband and my order is always cold. It's the. wrong order 4. On my order, don't get there. Tell my Husband's order is already done. 5. I don't say too much about it because I don't like sending things back by. They tell the waitress and they look at me like oh you're just complaining and I'm nice about it. I don't go to the supervisors. I don't go to their boss. I just tell them. it's just not fair. This happened every time I go in with my husband we used to go in with some friends too and it happens then I'm the only one that happens to and what's weird is on the One usually gives the tip and if it's just two of us , I give 20% of the bill or more. The bill is $15 at least give them five dollar tip.. so it's not like giving them a the tip and I always give them cash usually. Weather been back in the last three months and we won't be back in . Our friends like black bear so it's up to you if you like him, but this happens when we go to California too food is always cold that a lot of people like them and I feel bad putting this on their side, but it's my opinion and only my opinion.

Always a great meal, large portions reasonably priced. When we are in Madras to visit, we always come here for breakfast!

This restaurant is filthy. Old fake greenery everywhere riddled with dust and cobwebs. Lights are greasy and dirt crusted. Service is subpar as waitstaff is not personable and to overwhelmed with tables to offer reasonable dining experience. As far as food ordered ham breakfast and it was burnt and dry. Hash browns were greasy and swimming in oil. Eggs were cooked perfect! To be fair I have eaten here 3 times and every time is the same. I will not be back. Needs deep cleaning and basic serving training!

We have not had good experiences at Black Bear Diners for a couple of years; but, I had heard good things about this diner. The restaurant was easy to find with entrances and exits to northbound and southbound Highway US-97. Parking was easy with plenty of parking spaces. The main part of the restaurant appeared to be full; but, we were quickly seated in a booth near the front door. It took a few minutes before our iced tea arrived because, as Kady explained, a new batch needed to be brewed. They know how to make excellent iced tea. I have a problem with the Black Bear Diner menu. I usually end up deciding between too many calories and far too many calories. I went with the far too many calories: eggs, spicy sausage patties, and pancakes. My wife was more constrained, BLT with Vegetable Beef Soup. She praised the BLT, especially the crispy bacon. I tasted the soup and kind of wished that I had some for myself. I enjoyed everyone of those far too many calories, especially the sweet cream pancakes. We will be finding our way back to Black Bear Diner - Madras.

Been numerous times. Love the food, the service and the ambiance. Price is great! Definitely the go to diner in Madras.

I am only giving 1 star because our server was dirty and did not smell good at all! I think if you are going to work in the food industry you should be required to be clean with good hygiene. I don't care how nice and clean the place is if you have someone that is not clean you don't trust how your food is being prepared. whomever is in charge should make sure that the employees are coming to work bathed with clean uniforms! No exceptions

Good brake fast I think this is only the second one I've visited recently. They apparently now have 143 locations across 14 states. The atmosphere is always good. Good music is always playing on speakers. Good orange juice and good coffee. Friendly service.

Had a really great experience here on a Friday afternoon. We were sat quickly and the owner himself served us. The food was fresh and very tasty, the 4 in our party all loved our meals. I had the homemade chili which had a little kick to it, and was filling. Also had the tri tip sandwich with the au jus, and everything, from the bread to the meat, to the au jus was so tasty. Also they serve fresh squeezed orange juice that is perfect with any meal. The sweet potato fries and homemade ranch was also so good. Very cozy atmosphere. Will definitely stop by here again, thanks for the excellent experience, and tips what to do in town!

Very nice diner. Good service with friendly waitstaff. Pancakes are large with good flavor. The chicken fried steak was nice prepared with a good coating that was not overly thick. The dining area was fairly quiet even though the place was very busy. The seating area was arranged nicely and it didn't feel cramped.

Great food in the middle of nowhere... friendly people and great service. Highly recommend if you are ever in this part of the state.

You really need to train your waitress on how to carry her plates! she had a plate against her clothes just under her face! I have never seen anyone bring food out like this, please teach your younger staff how to properly serve food I did not appreciate having her breathing on my food Also stop with the baby talk you're a grownup woman act like one!! and check back with your customer instead of standing around talking This was the worst experience we have ever had here defiantly won' let them seat us in her section again.

We loved this restaurant. It is very kitschy with all the bears so fun for kids. You know the food is good and for a good price when you see local folks eating there. Our food was simple, but delicious and the service was excellent.

Black Bear diners are a chain similar to Sharis and Dennys. I frequent all three from time to time unless there is a small, local "greasy spoon" clubcar-type diner in the area for breakfast. I do prefer to patronize small local businesses if one is available and has good Yelp reviews. I have never had a bad meal at any Black Bear diner and this franchise was no different. I was just passing through and had to speak at a group function later that morning. Needed a filling breakfast and knew I could count on Black Bear to provide that. They got me seated quickly, took my order quickly, the food and the bill showed up quickly. Wait staff was fine. Plenty of coffee and a filling breakfast, Just as expected. Not the least expensive option but good value for the $$$ and I didn't leave hungry which was the object of the exercise. Not likely that I will be back in Madras any time soon but here's another notch for one more five star Black Bear diner experience.

This was a fantastic spot for breakfast!! My family was passing through on vacation, my wife and I had the steak and eggs, and the portions were very large and filling. My daughter had the biscuits and gravy. Everything was awesome! I only wish they had locations out here in Alabama we could visit. I'll definitely eat there again next time I'm in the area.

Outstanding experience at Black Bear Diner. Visiting from out of state. Super busy on a Sunday morning before church. Joel was our server and took good care of us. He is friendly and courteous, with lots of smiles. We are vegan so we had the oatmeal and it was delicious! Served with cinnamon, craisins, and nuts, and brown sugar, with a side slice of orange. You can mix in whatever you want. This is a cute place with lots of carved statues of bears. We would come back and ask for Joel again. Super nice guy.

Breakfast starts at 7 AM! I only gave 1 less star because their regulars were priority over us who were here 1st! We had a waiter serve coffee, a waitress take our order and another waitress bring the bill- waitresses were friendly Breakfast: my husband had chicken fried steak and I vegetable omelette with sausage link= coffee is the best!

Always the place we have breakfast when we are in the area! Never a disappointment, went again this last weekend and it was hospitable, fast, accurate, plentiful, and delicious

I wasn't sure if I wanted to try this place looking at how many stars they had but after reading some of the reviews and seeing low ones for something petty that had nothing to do with service or food, we decided to give it a try. Considering how busy it was, we were seated right away and we got our coffees ans hot chocolates pretty quick. The service was top notch. Food was great but it is at a cost considering it is breakfast. Not sure if 2 pumpkin spice pancakes were worth $10. I think my husband's French toast with blackberries inside was around $14? Breakfast for 4 cost a whopping $60. Was it a great breakfast, yes. Was it worth paying that much, not so much as some of our dinners were that price but glad we did this once.

Food was so good. Had the pancakes and had lunch there, great turkey sandwich. The portions are large the food is cooked well and the service is average but still good. Clean all around. I will be back.

Ok well here it goes I ordered the chicken pot pie it was awful no favor no taste not really much in it. I think the service was quick and friendly waitress . This restaurant has a great vibe but the food is bland . I don't think I will be back . Would I recommend not really just plain average food nothing spectacular. I give them 2 stars .

I ordered the Denver omelet this morning. It was seriously more like an egg scramble. According to the menu it was a three egg omelet but I don't think it was more than a single egg, a matching amount of cheese and way too many onions. The ham was awfully scarce. It's clear that they don't know how to make omelets. The "fresh" biscuit was anything but. It had to have been at least several days old. I gave them one star because the coffee was good. I don't usually write reviews but I really like going out to breakfast, especially when traveling, and this was a big let down.

Was on a road trip and decided to stop in for breakfast and got exactly what I expect from a Black Bear Diner - great food, great service, and decent prices. I got the two eggs breakfast combo with hash browns and it was great. My boyfriend got the eggs Benedict and it was good, although one of the eggs was a little over cooked. Still a good place to stop and eat when you're on the road.

This place was great! The owner was working training a young man. The service was good, the food was excellent! We left a hefty 60% tip or so because good work is hard to find and this place was doing a great job! We had a bad experience at the Redmond location and walked out about 30 mins before. Stay clear from that crackhead establishment and just got to MADRAS!

I've been to multiple Black Bear Diners and have really enjoyed the service and food. Last week, June 21, 2023 I went to the Black Bear Diner in Madras OR. Our visit started out well but the waitress assigned to our table was surly and grumpy. She avoided us so I had to get up to get help from another waitress. The rest of the staff seemed courteous and attentive. We ordered breakfast as it was morning. My egg was overcooked and the hash browns were barely cooked at all. I'm surprised we stayed. My sourdough toast was harder than a crouton. I will say the bacon, pancakes, and bear claw were good. By 2am I knew that they had given me food poisoning. It was a rough day. My wife didn't get sick so we're 99.9% sure it was the potatoes as that was the only thing different on our plates. I will never go back to this particular diner and only want to save others from our experience.

Exceptional Experience - this restaurant checks every single box Spotlessly clean, beautifully appointed (for a diner/breakfast restaurant) and good food with great service The attention to detail for this Black Bear begins the moment you walk along the adjacent sidewalk to the front door. The amount of effort energy and money spent on the exterior landscaping and carved bears outside is evident. The 1953 Chevy pick up truck parked outside is a very nice touch. And honestly, the truck caused me to initiate a u-turn around the block and stop in. The attention to detail throughout the restaurant, from the moment the hostess greets you - all the way through your meal is much more than you could ask for - when seeking a quick breakfast. I'm not sure where some of the occasional "reviewer hate" is coming from... but I'd suggest they might want to recalibrate their expectations. How much more could you possibly expect, or deserve, from a simple, clean, dining establishment (with terrific food) located in Madras Oregon? An "easy" five star review... a delightful and surprising experience! What I learned: Black Bear restaurants are owned by franchisee's... subsequently, the consistency throughout the restaurant chain is absent. THIS LOCATION SHOULD BE THE "STANDARD" for other BB's to be judged by. Steak and eggs special, plus a waffle with coffee ... $17 I can't imagine the concept being executed any better than this!

If you want Gluten free then go somewhere else! There's a lot of good things at the Black bear, with a menu that appeals to everyone. They are actually the best black Bear within 100 miles of you want my opinion. Service is swift, food is consistently good and you can always expect a good meal when you go in.

We stop here every time we go to bend, and I don't know what happened to this place, but you have a bunch of kids that just screw off! These boys and I do mean boys are more interested in playing than they are working the worst service we have ever got! Your staff has gone down hill!

We were in town for a wildfire and ended up that this was our go to place when we needed something else besides camp food. On this trip I had the chicken, waffle, and egg. Now I am a big guy and I could not finish it. It was the best chicken and waffle that I have ever had.

We have been to several stores in this restaurant chain. In California and Oregon. In this case we were with a large family group for lunch. Despite having a dozen customers at a large table the waiter did an excellent job taking the orders, keeping them straight, delivering beverages and getting the food to the right place. The kitchen kept up. The food was good. The family was together for a reunion and we dined at a half dozen restaurants over a long weekend. This might have been the best meal even though we went to fancier places. We trust the chain. This is a good place for a simple meal.

Had a chicken fried steak it was good the gravy was so bad it was watered down so bad it was disgusting waiter couldn't get me new gravy should of made it right. Waiter really good Joel tried

Waitress was nice. Went to eat with the fork at the table an it was super nasty with food on the back side from poor washing if washed at all. Took it up to the counter as they where buzzy and got attitude and as I walked back to my table they where chuckling about it. Not what I expected but all good. Food came out, all but my sandwich, I let them know they can keep it and I was good. Not much care here. Table next to us was speaking to the owner as they where unhappy with there meal and he seemed like a nice guy . But overall lack of care from staff and mabey just a bad day.

Excellent service and food. Both of our sandwiches were good. Recommend the potato salad. Solid value.

Strange welcome. The greeter is awkward and wearing all black. Looks like a religious cult member. This is Madras, a former logging town, and before that, the Oregon Trail. Too frickin wierd. Good town for the next Stephen King movie. No one looks happy, the wait staff visibly frowning and grimmacing. What gives? Other than the unhappy vibes, OK grilled cheese.

Just like home! Except better. At home I cook the breakfast. Here I just eat as much as possible and leave the rest on the plate. The southern scramble was wonderful with Has browns, eggs, sausage, gravy and soft beautiful biscuits. My wife's Shasta Scramble with fresh spinach, peppers, onions, tomatoes and hash browns was just as wonderful. Great service.
