"Black Coffee and Waffle Bar, St Anthony Park by Studio On Fire. What once was Muddscuckers Coffee Shop is now a waffle destination. Yes, you read that correctly: a waffle destination. The only thing more plentiful than the waffle choices is the number of different seating areas to choose from (the long banquette, tables in the side room, at the coffee bar, the long high table by the window). It's just close enough to the university that you'll be joined by lots of laptop users waring earbuds and if you're lucky you'll be able to eavesdrop on some emerging collegiate romances."

Google
I've been here twice at the time of writing this review, and both times have been great. I got a mocha and a build-your-own waffle each time: they were both delicious and the waffles are good even without syrup. The atmosphere is quiet on weekday mornings, but can get a bit busy on Sundays. There is also a bike rack out front which I appreciate, though it only fits one or two bicycles. Overall I enjoyed my experience here and will definitely be coming back!

Google
went in on Labour day and only one person working at the front (taking orders and making drinks) and another as the server. wait was not too bad, and we waited a while for our food. the waffles were pretty decent, but i found the whipped cream and sugar way too sweet. would want to try a savoury option next time.

Good was exceptional and Chai was very well done ….. time for delivery was atrocious and I think this was a tremendous road block for building in the biz. Good was delivered without silverware or napkins and there was none in the front of the house. Water took forever to be refilled and finally someone sitting at the bar waiting for her food, who seemed to work there??? Took dirty plates from the bar and put them in dishpan and let a gentleman know and poof it was replenished!! Benches against wall were loose and very tippy. Saw customers having to wipe down the tables between seatings. Cleanliness was marginal and washing hands between serving and cleaning was not seen….. hmmmm

Google
The waffles are really good. Since the place is always busy and there are never seats open, you kind of have to hover over other tables and pressure them to give up their seats which can lead to uncomfortable situations for both sides. 4 waffles took about 30-40 minutes to come out, seems sort of unreasonable because they were pretty simple orders. Approx $8 per waffle seems a little excessive, but they were really good and can understand the need to have high prices since they're a small business.

Google
This is a nice little, local coffee shop with really tasty waffles! I had the Apple strudel waffle with a hot caramel macchiato. Very good. My friend and I came here to catch up and the atmosphere was perfect for that, as we sat for three hours! I will be back!

Google
Now that I've moved out of the Cities, I still think about this place and long for when I can visit again. The service is great, the atmosphere inside is awesome, but most of all the waffles are to die for. I usually go with the Naughty Waffle, but my friends have gotten some of the other waffles so I know they're all delicious. After coming here once, you'll dream about coming back!

Hands down one of the best cafe's in this neighborhood! I've all positives for this one. 1) wifi has an amazing speed and I was able to easily work. 2) Best waffles, tried out strawberry cheesecake and the naughty waffle. Both were amazing. 3) Iced latte was amazing as well. 4) vibe is really good and customer service is top notch.

Google
This was by far the best waffle I have ever eaten. Ordering for pick up was quick and easy. The Naughty Waffle with blueberry, banana, Blueberry, whip and gramcracker crumbs was amazing. Even Cappuccino w/oatmilk and caramel shot was delicious 😋. I pulled out my car tray and pulled up to a park to eat this, I couldn't even wait until I got home. They were busy but still had great customer service; The front clerk was answering questions on the phone, helping and fixing to go orders and still managed to give me a friendly greeting, very impressive. I am full with out the fatigue and can still get on woth my day. I highly recommend!

Yelp
2.95 stars ! Ethiopian drip coffee unreal .... And they roasted their own. PASS on the waffles. If you read everyone's reviews they mostly say the same thing: slow/ long waffle wait, not hot and fresh feeling and they just do toppings. They don't put anything in the waffle mix. Now knowing this before hand and knowing what to expect it's as good as eating them at home. So overall not terrible. Just be prepared for time. This is a vibe place.!!! Go here because you have time. You want to catch up on work or with a group of friends. It's kind of a Divey vibe. The COFFEE is AWESOME! I found out they roast their own coffee. They have a few different blends. I love the Ethiopian blend. It's a very typical berry flavor but for a drip coffee. It's one of the best I have had. It's there saving grace! IMO!!! Overall just know before you go because it's not terrible if you know what to expect!

Yelp
Went to their Rosedale Mall location and was it wasn't too bad. Just didn't like how loud it was and seems a bit overpriced for the waffle. The lady was able to help me out in a timely matter and got my food out to me fast as well considering she was by herself. I got the vegan batter and it's about $2+ for it. The waffles look pretty but this was way to thick for me, the waffle with the almond butter. The matcha latte was good, I enjoyed it.

Yelp
Need better staff. There was a pumpkin waffle special that I wanted but she said she hadn't made one yet and would have to text a co-worker... Since I didn't want to be her experiment, I opted for something else Which was out of one of the ingredients. I have been here only twice and the story is the same! Missing ingredients... The waffle did the trick, but I wouldn't go out of my way to go back again.

Yelp
This place offers what it advertises - coffee and waffles, and not really much else. I would have assumed, then, that it would do those things well. I ordered a naughty waffle, which was topped with strawberries, bananas, blueberries, almond butter, granola and whipped cream. It came out looking great. And the fruit and almond butter were good, but the waffle was terrible. Dense, overcooked but not crisp, and oddly sour. And the thing they called granola was practically unidentifiable - gummy and stale. Go if you want to take a picture of a pretty waffle and want to enjoy some toppings, but don't expect a good waffle.
google avatar

Brooke K.

Yelp
I am a HUGE waffle fan and I loved the amount of fruit that they provide and the almond butter but my favorite was the granola! They have speciality waffles that I can't wait to go back and try the s'mores and strawberry cheesecake but they also have savory options that look amazing or build your own! Such a great spot to chat with friends or get some work/homework done!

Yelp
i got the s'more waffle ($10) and my friends and i shared the copy of Loaded Potato waffle ($11.50) . the copy of loaded potato waffle was pretty good. it had hash browns, onions, peppers, cheese, bacon bits, and sour cream. i thought that the s'more waffle was just ok. i honestly expected it to taste fresher. i wish i had got the strawberry cheesecake waffle that has (cheesecake, strawberries, graham crackers, whipped cream), which i will for sure try next time. their drinks and waffles are a bit overpriced and overrated in my opinion. the staff also did not acknowledge us when we walked it. it took them about 5 minutes to realize we were waiting for assistance. overall rating: 5/10

Yelp
Went to Black Coffee and Waffle Bar on Como last week and got two waffles and a chai. We got the Loaded Potato waffle and it was so delicious. it's more like hash browns cooked in a waffle iron (not like a potato pancake texture). I love crispy hash browns, and if you do too i recommend this! The other waffle we got was the Naughty Waffle. it usually comes with almond butter, but we prefer peanut butter and they swapped it for us! It comes with lots of fruits on top and crunchy granola (that i believe is made in house)! Overall a pretty typical sweet and savory waffle.
google avatar

Yelp
There is a surprising number of seats, both tables and booths. There are seasonal specials for coffee and waffles which were very unique. We tried the sweet potato casserole waffle which is a sweet potato batter. There is street parking available. They appreciate you busing your own table. The waffle size was generous, good portions!

Yelp
Stopped in for a coffee to kill some time before meeting up with friends for game day. This place was packed but they did a good job of moving through customers quickly. The coffee was great and the waffles looked amazing, though I did not try one myself.

Yelp
I thought this place was very cute! It wasn't busy when I got there and it was a sit yourself type of cafe! The staff was very nice and helpful with giving recommendations since it was my first time being there! I recommend this place if you love coffee and waffles!

Yelp
We ate at Black's Como Street location in Mpls. Perhaps the St. Paul location is bit more up-to-date? The two of us had the apple strudel and the peanut butter waffle. Both were tough and not fluffy, like you would expect of a waffle, especially for the price which averaged about $9.00 a waffle w/no sides. The only meat side they offer is a type of ham (round slices)? The coffees and hot teas were fine. They have an adequate selection. It's a neighborhood eatery not far from the University of Minnesota, so there's more of a young crowd. It was worth a first-time visit, but we won't return. The facility as well is a bit old and could use some upgrading, especially the bathroom (just one). Parking is on the street if you can find a space.

Yelp
This is my first time to Black Coffee & Waffle Bar (Como). We ordered the strawberry cheesecake waffle and the loaded potato. For beverages we had a lemonade and an iced americano. It took about 20 minutes to get our beverages. The americano was delicious. I even bought a bag of beans because I liked it so much. After about 45 minutes, the cheesecake waffle came out. It took another 15 minutes for the potato waffle to be delivered. It was early afternoon on a Sunday, so I get it was busy. The guy behind the counter was very kind and kept checking on us and even gave us a coupon for a future visit because of the very long wait. The potato waffle was ok. It was a lump of hash browns with bacon, cheese and a bit of sour cream. It had decent flavor but was underwhelming. The cheesecake waffle was amazing! The waffle itself was really fluffy & the spread was really delicious. I would try it again, even to just order a coffee drink.

Lauren P.

Yelp
I wanted to like this place, but the first time I went I ordered the strawberry cheesecake waffle and found a very large piece of hard plastic in it. It looked like part of a plastic bag. I told the workers and they were very apologetic and offered me a coupon for a free waffle. A few days later, I redeemed my free waffle coupon and ordered a strawberry cheesecake waffle to-go. Lo and behold, I get home and bite into the waffle, and there's another piece of plastic in it!!! It looked like it was from the same bag. I guess they didn't fix the problem after I told them the first time. It's too bad because the waffle was pretty good otherwise.

Yelp
Took 1 hour, 25 min to get my food. Restaurant was not half full. Ordered the Loaded Potato. Paid just over $15, after taxes . Way over priced. Glad I'm not coming back, lesson learned.
google avatar

Allen E.

Yelp
Food is over priced yet you get your own utensils and take your plates to the trash. Tables aren't wiped down because my arms stuck to the table. Waited 30 minutes for a Waffle. Coffee isn't good. Ambiance is nice.

Christopher S.

Yelp
Apathetic staff. Kitchen looks like a health code violation when seated at the curved bar. Windows are dirty and have had graffiti on them for months. Sidewalk was rarely cleaned through the winter. Sent an email to the Contact Us account via their website explaining the aforementioned and never heard back. Seems appropriate to share the same feedback with the world now.

Yelp
I have only had coffee here. This location is near my office and is part of my work day espresso run rotation. I have been here many times over the past few months as I needed an alternative to the office coffee. These guys make great espresso. I am sure they make great coffee drinks in general but all I have ever ordered was an espresso. There are several different people who have made my coffees, and all have been very good, so they seem to have a good system going. If you are near the U campus and feel like taking a little walk, I definitely recommend popping in for a coffee.

Yelp
This is such a cool hangout spot and they have AMAZING waffles. I went with a friend and we decided on the Strawberry Cheesecake and Fat Andrew (these are waffles on the menu). The cashier was very kind despite having issues with the payment/receipt system. We had a nice interaction with her and grabbed a seat at the little bar area so we could people watch. The location is cute, it's sort of a hole in the wall. There's a good amount of traffic in the front which I enjoy. They had good music playing and lots of places to sit for how small it is. I felt really comfortable. I'm hoping the pictures will speak for themselves, but the waffles were really to die for. Anything with peanut butter has me melting so I loved the Fat Andrew. I can't wait to take friends here in the future. It would be a good place to get work or homework done as well.

Yelp
The name of the joint says it all, coffee and waffles. Come here if that's what you are looking for, coffee and waffles. Both are delicious offerings but that's what you're going to get when you get here. No bottomless mimosa bougie brunch here. And that's a good thing. Sometimes you just want tiny squares of syrup filled happiness and caffeine.
google avatar

Mikayla K.

Yelp
Food: Delicious, savory waffles. Crispy on the outside, and soft on the outside. My favorite is the Fat Andrew which is peanut butter and banana. Keep in mind that this place is exactly what it says: coffee and waffles. This isn't a cafe with other options, like eggs or whatnot. Venue: Very cute coffee shop feel, but very small. There is limited seating and it can get very packed on the weekend. BUT they do have the famous Instagram Black: Coffee and Waffle Bar sign that you've likely sign on your feed. Parking: Street parking.
google avatar

Garrett H.

Yelp
There wasn't a ton of seating, so our group of four had to wait and jump on the first available table. I just had a regular coffee, which was pretty mediocre to be honest. Not bad, just nothing special. However, the waffles. WOW. Crispy exterior with a soft interior. Covered in toppings. Just fabulous! I would come back for the waffles, but if I were just going for coffee, this wouldn't be my first choice.

Janice W.

Yelp
Cute little joint with the simplicity of exactly what it's called...coffee and waffles. They even have gf and vegan offerings. Coffee is delicious!
google avatar

Chanez S.

Yelp
Bad business. They will commonly turn off various apps for ordering. Oka, but then I call and they lie and say it's due the supply chain. Pandemic lie? I had Ubereat credits and they were open and taking order on DoorDas. Business isn't for everyone and blaming COVID is rampant. This isn't the first closed menu and low service issue with this one. I ordered Eggys.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite breakfast places! My husband and I used to come here every weekend while we were dating, and now it's our favorite place to come to for a great breakfast when we're without the kids. The waffles are absolutely delicious! They're the best waffles I ever had. The coffees are pretty great too! This place can be INSANELY PACKED!! And finding a seat can be extremely difficult. But it's worth the wait. There is a lot of street parking around, and most of the times I've been here, it was a lot easier to find a parking spot than finding a spot inside the cafe.
google avatar

Manny G.

Yelp
Good Coffee, Nice location and friendly baristas. Great work space and plenty of seating they are just very slow to take order and make coffee. If I was in the area I would stop in for sure although I would not go out of my way.
google avatar

Hongsuk S.

Yelp
Two of us came here and ordered the Naughty Waffle and the Strawberry Cheesecake Waffle on around 11:00 AM on a Sunday. We also ordered a coffee and a chai tea. We were lucky enough to find seating immediately, and the drinks came quick, and the food not too much longer. The drinks were not good for what we paid for. Giving the chai tea a bit of an excuse, the coffee, I felt, should have been quite good because it is in the name. The waffles were a turn for the better though. They were beautiful in presentation (very instagram worthy!) and good portions. The Naughty Waffle was full of strawberries, bananas, and blueberries, along with a good base of almond butter. The granola and whipped cream were an interesting addition, but they worked. The strawberry cheesecake waffle was a little bit on the sweetside, but it was quite unique in what they did, by adding in cheesecakes into the ridges of the waffle and topping it with strawberries, and whipped cream. The graham crackers were dusted on the plate and not quite the chunks I was expecting, but they weren't the main focus. I would definitely come again for the waffles, but would stay away from the drinks...

Yelp
I went here years ago and it was great, I went recently and wasn't to thrilled about it. Smaller waffle bar/coffee shop, I feel like its more geared to hipster college students. It could for sure use a little update. They make pretty designs on the drinks which is nice. The waffles are a little spendy but they are decorated very nicely. The waffle has a interesting taste, for sure light on sugar, it for sure overpowers the taste of the toppings. I usually order the 'muddsucker' which is a cinnamon vibe. It's okay. Seems to be ran by college students(?) which is cool. Had to wait awhile to order or to be greeted even though the register is maybe 4-5 steps into the door. I'd say expect a laid back chill vibe, nothing too fancy. Also make sure you have time to wait. Street parking around the neighborhood.

Yelp
HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!! We ordered two s'mores waffles with NO marshmallows on both because I don't eat pork. They served us the waffles with marshmallows and when I told them I asked for no marshmallows, they took the plate and came back within ONE minute. They most likely picked off all the marshmallows. Not only did they get our order wrong, they drenched the waffles with an unbelievable amount of syrup, I couldn't even finish it. The waffles also had a sour aftertaste. I ordered hot chocolate, I never drank anything more disgusting. It tasted like they mixed chocolate syrup and warm milk. It wasn't even hot. I also ordered an iced caramel latte with EXTRA caramel, it was still very bitter and undrinkable. When I told one of the workers about my experience, the guy apologized however he dismissed me. I asked him if I could get a refund for the two waffles, that I did NOT finish, he said he couldn't help me and that he's busy then walked away. I will never come back here again. If you're Muslim or someone who doesn't eat pork, I'd consider all your other options before choosing to come here because they'll only pick off the marshmallows and nothing more. Also again, SOUR SOUR SOUR aftertaste. Gross.

Yelp
A friend brought me here for breakfast based on another friend's suggestion. Came here around 9 and there was a line to order, but still a good decent amount of tables open for sitting. The menu was pretty simple, aside from the make you own. I ordered the s'more waffle, which just had chocolate chips, chocolate drizzle, marshmallows, and some crushed graham cracker crumbs sprinkled on top and around it. About 15 minutes after ordering the waffle came out. While it looked delicious and wasn't terrible, it didn't really live up to my expectations. I had this image in my mind that that some of these ingredients would be incorporated INTO the waffle, but they were really just all toppings. The waffle itself was pretty good, not too dry but still easy to cut. However, for almost 8 dollars I expect something better than a regular waffle with some toppings. I don't see the hype, but by the time we left there were no seats left open and people were waiting for tables to open up. There was a longer line waiting to order than when we first got there!
google avatar

Yelp
The waffles were delicious but I wish there were more than one savory waffle. I ordered the naughty waffle which had almond butter, blueberries, strawberries, bananas, granola, and topped with whipped cream. The other two members of my group ordered the apple waffle and the bad pig. All three were amazing but definitely too much food! I recommend splitting waffles when you go.

Yelp
Stopped in around 11 on a Sunday morning. The place was PACKED, but in the end I wish I had gone some where else. Service was SO SLOW. It took 25 minutes to get a waffle - and that was after standing in line 10-15 minutes to order. Way too damn long. The waffle was ok - they are not crispy like a Belgian waffle, and were pretty light and airy. I prefer something more dense. I had the banana walnut and there were a good amount of walnuts but I think they could have done a whole banana. At $8 they should be loaded. I would also think that at $8/waffle they could afford to buy a couple more waffle makers or hire more staff? Again, it just took sooooo long! The new location in St. Paul is probably larger so if I had to go again I'd go there, but I probably won't return.

Jeff M.

Yelp
You'll get some good waffles the first time but then after that it's like chasing a high you'll never get again, every time I go back they either don't put everything I bought on it or the waffle would be burnt

Yelp
I have a love/hate relationship with BCWB. It's close to my office, has coffee, unique and great food. Personally I love the savory waffles but have yet to be let down by the food. Cons: I have had it take almost 40+/- minutes to get my waffle. The hours on the door are not exact, it's routine that the presumably college aged staff inside will still be prepping their day after the "Open" sign has been turned on. It has happened to be a number of times, 4+ where I've tried to get a cup of coffee right at 7 on weekdays only to not be able to get the attention of the staff the last event I waved and knocked like an idiot for 5 minutes and finally abandoned my quest at 12 after. I get the frustration of food prep, having worked in restaurants before. If you open at 7, you should be ready for a customer at 6:55am to open formally on time at 7am. As someone in the customer service world of another local university area employer, I want to help other local businesses. The poor service and inconsistent morning performance of opening on time has driven me away. This was also sent privately in a message on yelp, the lack of response to that message for over a week furthers what appears to be a lack of care for the customer experience by management/staff. Other local coffee shops that have since received my consistent business when coming into downtown in the morning yet 2+ miles away: Northern Coffeeworks, Spy House. Both of which have consistent performance opening on time in my experience.

Yelp
I got s'more waffle since I don't really like cinnamon taste in my waffle. Matched with Caramel Macchiato coffee( amazing ) came with Starbucks style and Classic taste. Waffle would be little bits sweet for me but that's fine since I'm not really a sweet taste person. So sum it up, absolutely delicious !

Yelp
Stopped by for breakfast. Hint: rush starts at 10 am on the weekends so be here early for easy seating. Order at the counter and they will bring your waffles to you. We went with the Apple strudel and the naughty waffle. I'm not a huge Apple person so I knew that it wasn't going to be a great hit for me but my friend loves Apple pie and things similar to it. He gave it 3 stars. However, I really loved the naughty waffle! The almond butter pairs really well with the batter and fruit. I was full for hours! Don't forget to order a coffee. Espresso is always a win. I've heard good reviews on their matcha drinks as well. Street parking available, can be tough (unless you're here before the rush!)

Yelp
I had been hearing about this place forever and did have pretty high expectations for it. Walking in it almost looked like a caribou where you order at the counter and they call out your name when it's ready. We had a hard time finding a table, and looking around there were a lot of teens taking up large tables by themselves to do homework or sit on their phones. It had the feel of a place that you could sit for hours to do homework or hangout but was sort of loud between music and other people talking so I wouldn't reccomend it as a place to have real conversation. The service was decent, the cashier was nice but seemed a little irritated that we weren't ready to order the moment we walked through the door. I got the s'mores waffle minus the graham crackers. It tasted good, wasn't out of this world for a waffle but I did eat the whole thing no problem! Their hot chocolate was good as well, nothing extraordinary but we liked it. Overall it was a fun place with a decent waffle and hot chocolate, the price was fair for what we got and I would consider going back if we lived closer.

Yelp
They Are So Slow If you feel like waiting forty five minutes to be served burnt coffee and subpar waffles by a disinterested 19 year old this is the place for you! I live a few blocks away and have tried over and over to enjoy their food and coffee but it's just never been anything more than disappointing. Every time I walk by with my dog I think to myself how convenient it would be to grab a coffee- but then I remember that what they serve is just expensive brown water. If you are after coffee, I recommend crossing the bridge to go to Dogwood or Dunn bros. If you are after killer waffles, go to HiLo on Lake.

Yelp
I love their waffles! They are all beautiful and delicious. My sister and I have breakfast dates here every time I come back to Minnesota. It always seems like 1 waffle won't be enough, but they are all so filling! Still a bit pricy for a waffle though, and their service can be slow.

Yelp
Note: Writing Review from perspective of being a new vegan and having to try out all my favorite restaurants with a new lens. Pros: - all waffles can be made vegan!!! - the waffles are the perfect crisp on the outside but nice and bready/fluffy on the inside Cons: - the menu doesn't tell you what toppings are vegan so make sure you pay attention to details - the menu says all waffles can be made gluten free. Tip: the gluten free batter is also the vegan batter! - don't go with a large group. Be ready to stand and eat if no chairs are available and be prepared for a wait. I tried the banana nut waffle. It was good. A bit too heavy on the nutmeg. However, I'm intrigued enough to try again and try something else. I had the banana but

Yelp
I have heard about this place for a while and heard pretty good things about the restaurant. My wife and I came here with some friends to check it out and we were pretty excited about it. It's in a nice area and on a corner of the street. Parking was easy and it was easy to get to. Upon arriving we liked the design of the building. It looks like an uptown style bar and the whole restaurant is black on the outside. Once inside the restaurant stays in that atheistic. It feels like a bar and the color of the restaurant is grey and black. The restaurant seemed old and everything was kind of falling apart or just old. When we got to our table we noticed that all the chairs were mismatched and the table was shakey. We were a party of 4 and most of the set ups are for only 2 people and we had to put two tables together. We thought the restaurant was wasn't the cleanest and well kept, but it wasn't horrible. As for the food, my wife and I shared the Smores Waffle and we each got a cup of hot chocolate. We thought the cocoa was good. It was hot, chocolaty, and pretty creamy. The cup size was pretty decent for the price as well. The waffle was a good price too and overall pretty tasty. The waffle was cooked nice and the smores flavor was done very well. It had a good ratio to chocolate and marshmallow. We both enjoyed it. Overall this restaurant is a pretty cool hangout spot for college kids or a nice quick breakfast if you're in the area. We thought the food was decent and good for the price, but we thought the restaurant was old. We will go back if we go with friends, but will probably stick to the pancake house for just the two of us.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place. It's close to campus, it serves waffles (!!!) and it's just got a cool aesthetic to it. Sadly, that wasn't the case. I appreciated the ability to build your own waffle, as well as choose from their own menu combinations, but the waffle itself was dry. The first time, I had the Fat Andrew, and I chalked up the dryness to the peanut butter. I ordered the Strawberry Cheesecake the next time, and the waffle was still dry. If this is your only place for waffles, I guess it's decent. And what the waffles lack for in taste, they make up for in looks. But if you're interested in a good waffle experience, I can't say it would be here.

Yelp
I loved the vibe of the place and enjoyed the food even more! My waffle was amazing and came with my own mini pitcher of maple syrup, the fruit was fresh and delicious also. There were lots of cozy spots to sit and the restaurant itself is very artsy and chill. Would recommend for brunch!!

Yelp
You have to buss your own tables, service is very slow, and there are no waiters (you order at a bar and get a number and seat yourself).

Yelp
I stopped in at the location on Marshall Ave in St. Paul. I ordered a cold brew for $5 and left a $1 tip. Then I waited and waited and waited. I stood there in view of the four young people milling about behind the counter including the boy who took my order. I went to the bathroom which was not in great shape if you know what I mean. When I came back, I eagerly looked for my coffee. I looked and looked. Alas no coffee. Just as I was about to say something, one of the children looked at me. I could see the idea register on their face; I could see how my presence became real to him. This elderly woman he sees before him. Might she be a customer? Oh, joy! I've been seen. I've been acknowledged. The boy who took my money mumbled something like an apology and a brilliant excuse. "I forgot." Oh, the folly of youth. My coffee was good and the 15 or so minutes I spent waiting for it was something akin to a Sam Shepard play. I told my wife about my experience and we laughed and laughed. Those kids today! I should have reached into the tip jar and taken my dollar back, but I have a feeling those young people are going to need it.

Yelp
Black Coffee and Waffle Bar is a local diner on the Saint Paul side of the Mississippi, serving up (as you'd expect) coffee and waffles. The coffee was just ok, and the waffles are rather standard, despite the fancy-sounding names on the menu. The waitress was friendly, and the ambiance is pretty basic. A fine place to meet a friend, but not a destination per se.

Yelp
This is a great place for breakfast and to grab a cup of coffee. They have Dogwood coffee here, which is delicious! I got a s'mores waffle with strawberries, and would recommend this! The place overall is loud and always busy, so try to plan on going during a non-busy hour.

Yelp
Waffles! Who doesn't love waffles?! I got super excited to try Black Coffee and Waffle Bar because it's in my neighborhood and I had never gotten around to stopping by. It wasn't too busy, but customer service was kind of poor. The girls seemed nice but didn't really seem like they wanted to be working. They have plenty of seating inside, ideal for groups of 2-4. The menu was a simple, I decided on getting the banana nut waffle and it was good. The waffle portion was just right and the toppings were not overwhelming. I expected to feel uncomfortably full after, but I was not! The waffle itself was a bit dry, though, so you may have to go heavy on the maple syrup. I still want to come back and try more of the menu and I think for being in Dinkytown, the price is right and it's perfect for students.

Yelp
This place is over-priced and overrated. I've stopped here for a latte a few times--their coffee drinks are well-made and they have Dogwood coffee which is tasty and local! Unfortunately, though, it seems as though they put my coffees/lattes in the queue with waffle orders as I've waited 25 mins for coffee once... my friends and I like to joke that they must only have one waffle machine because it takes so long to get your order. The waffles are $10+ and mediocre... honestly, you could probably make a better waffle at home. The only thing you're guaranteed is an instagram-worthy waffle pic.

Yelp
Food 5/5 Super good. I got the Strawberry Cheesecake and it was so good I took my first bite and though wow why did I only get one I should've gotten another. But one is enough to fill you up. I struggled finishing my last 3 bites but I pushed through because of how great it was. I am a coffee drinker and their Caramel Iced Latte was supper good. Make sure you stir it thoroughly though and you have to use your fork or knife to stir it, no spoon or coffee stirrer was given. Service 4/5 I called to make a reservation because of COVID and when I arrived they did not have me down (yes I did call this location which the cashier assumed I didn't). When our drinks arrived a lot of my coffee spilled as it was being put on the table and no extra napkins were brought over.
