Yelp
The first thing I liked about this place was that they have a parking lot so you don't have to worry about being extorted by any greedy parking meters, or walking any kind of distance after finding a place to park, although the lot is likely to be full during peak hours since it's not very big. The first thing I disliked was that it's a tiny little hole in the wall, with maybe a dozen tables maximum, and a little bit of bar seating.
The hostess who greeted us was very friendly, polite, and demonstrated an eagerness to be helpful. This was the first restaurant I've ever been to where you write your name on a board to be seated, although I didn't mind. Every table was occupied except one that was close to the door, which would have been too cold due to the door constantly opening and closing, so we opted to wait for a booth. They have two single-occupant bathrooms, one for each gender. That's nice for privacy, but not so nice when someone is already in there.
We were seated in less than 10 minutes. The booths have wooden seats with no cushioning on them whatsoever. I found them to be hard and not particularly comfortable. I wouldn't want to sit there very long. There are wet naps and paper towel rolls at every table, which is nice. They have Pepsi products, as the majority of restaurants in the area do, which is a con for me since I prefer Coke products.
The server seemed impatient to take our order. It was our first time here, so we wanted to look over the menu thoroughly before ordering. The server said "take your time" and yet kept coming back every couple of minutes, making me feel rushed. We ordered the cornbread as an appetizer. It came out barely warm and I didn't enjoy it, but my wife did.
The food came out quickly, but it was not particularly hot, nor did it seem fresh. My wife noted that she kept hearing a microwave going off in the background, so we got the impression that most of the food is just sitting around and gets reheated when someone orders it. The guy who brought out the food from the kitchen seemed kind of abrupt; not to the point of being rude, but it was noticeable.
As expensive as the place is, I think you should be able to get as much sauce as you want, but instead you only get 2 sauce choices (with what I ordered anyway), brought out in tiny little cups. I will say though that their spicier sauces are actually spicy, unlike a lot of restaurants where they claim something is spicy when it really isn't. I got the habanero and chipotle sauces. I liked the spiciness of them, but not their actual flavor. I would have enjoyed being able to taste the other sauces, but since you're limited to your selections, I wasn't able to do that. You have to pay extra for a "sauce flight" which features most of their sauce flavors. Considering the prices, if I get a combo plate, I should get the sauces without having to fork over even more money. Honestly, I've had store-bought sauces that were way better than the two selections I got here, which is sad.
The fries were delicious and had a great texture to them, although the portion was small and they needed salt. The mac & cheese was lukewarm, the cheese was a bit grainy, and the flavor was too subtle for my liking, but it wasn't bad and the pasta wasn't overdone. I ordered polish sausage, which was good, and ribs, which weren't particularly flavorful, nor were they fall-off-the-bone tender, as I prefer, although they weren't tough either. With the exception of the fries, which I loved, and the sausage, the flavor of everything was rather mediocre with nothing standing out as being particularly flavorful.
Overall, I would say that they have high prices (although average for the area), and small portions here. Sadly this is becoming the norm at a lot of restaurants. I'm sure you can get some delicious food here, if you happen to catch the timing where the food is fresh, and you know what sauces are good, but being that it was our first time, I guess we didn't make the best selections. Also, what kind of restaurant doesn't have any desserts? On the plus side, our server did come around often to check up on us.
Paying was awkward. I was handed an electronic device and the server just stood there waiting, making me feel rushed, while I was entering the tip amount. The device has only pre-selected percentages, starting at 18% and going up from there, so if you want to tip a different percentage (like the standard 15%), you'll have to do a "custom" amount, but since there is no calculator, you won't know how much that is. You should be able to select a specific percentage. Needless to say, I didn't like the paying process at all.
Overall, I was expecting more from a restaurant with a 4.5 star Yelp rating. Maybe I just had an off experience compared to the usual, but the idea of coming back here doesn't excite me; I'll try another BBQ place next time rather than returning here.
