"Black Dog Video, Commercial Drive by Asterios Moutsokapas. I get it. The year 1997 called and it would like its neighbourhood recommendation back. Though despite its anachronism, Black Dog has carved a reputation for itself in this counter-culture neighbourhood as a stalwart of the times of yore and boasts a well-curated selection of rare and critically acclaimed films going back to the early days of film making. So unless you're good at futzing around BitTorrent to get that 1950's Italian Neorealistic epic that will impress your Tinder date with your worldliness,I recommend you walk uphill both ways in the snow and rent an optical disk from here."

I love this store! As a cinephile, movie historian, and owner of more than 8,000 movies, this store provides me with more than enough selection of classic, contemporary, and hard-to-find films. The staff is friendly and extremely helpful. If you need a specific film not found in the store, they will gladly order it in for you. With video stores becoming something of past memory, I’m glad we still have stores like this that keep the tangible collecting tradition alive. Well done!

Good selection of films and tv shows, decent weekly deals, and staff that love film enough to have genuine feed back about recommendations. If you're the kind of person who wants to watch foreign and/or Indy films, this place is a good shout. It had selections of well made films you wont typically find on streaming services. My only issue is the prices, renting two films can run you the cost of paying for 1 month of a subscription service. You are paying for a well curated selection of harder to find films, but i would have liked it to be a touch cheaper.

Love coming here. The selection is awesome. While Netflix is good and all, nothing beats Black Dog's great selection on great foreign movies. I relish bringing my kid here to browse for kid movies. The experience is so much better than browsing endlessly online.

This is an important store, and you should get a membership today! A few weeks ago, a friend recommended I watch a documentary about video stores, and I actually started crying due to the flood of happy memories. I had forgotten the truly magical experience of browsing through a physical space, and making a discovery. Whether it’s being reminded of old treasures, re-rejecting old trash, or making brand new discoveries, there is no substitute for the sensory experience of browsing through a video store. Video stores are the libraries of cinema, and it would be wrong to have no libraries. Imagine how dreadful the world world would be if there was no such thing as physical books anymore. I miss the video rental experience, and Black Dog Video is the only place you can do that in Vancouver. I got a membership and rented a video right away. But that wouldn’t be enough to give them a five star review; It’s not enough to just exist, you have to excel at existing, and this place is indeed excellent. Behold, the ecstatic experience of my first browse in 20 years! They had the exact thing I was looking for on my very first visit; I went back a second time with a friend, and I can’t understate the value of wandering around and finding something that surprises you; it’s NOTHING like shuffling through a digital menu of what to watch or getting sucked into a YouTube vortex. Plus you’re supporting a local business. PLUS, you get to make pitches to your friends/dates as to what would be a good thing to choose. They get to push back, and you both get to compromise until you reach a consensus in the end. So basically, the video store sets you up for having healthy relationships in life 🤷🏼‍♂️. Don’t let your marriage end in divorce! Go to Black Dog Video tonight!! Anyway, this place has a RIDICULOUSLY good collection, featuring a huge range of stuff you can’t find anywhere else (they have an entire Robert Altman section which includes “Quintet”??!!). Don’t have a DVD player? Neither do I! You can get a DVD drive that plugs into your computer for around 20 bucks if you look around. Stave off the technocratic dystopia and get a membership today! 😉🤣 PS, they have a pretty funny podcast as well (Black Dog Video After Dark). Go!

Can't believe I found this place! This must be the only movie rental place in the Lower Mainland - and conveniently on Cambie in Vancouver, well below 21st. I thought they were all gone. And frankly, I really miss Blockbuster's and Roger's Video Stores. It was fun for my guy and me to browse for a couple of videos to watch on a rainy Friday night, especially when the new movies looked slim. Black Dog has great hours, great atmosphere, great selection, easy to rent - what's not to love? Please, everyone, flock here, so we can keep the 2 remaining movie rental stores - the other Black Dog's at 1470 Commercial Dr - open!! Thought the end of Videomatica meant the end of movie rentals. Not so, happily. (A shout out to Graham, Toulouse, my Cuz, and ghetto memories long gone.) Black Dog Video rocks - great place!

Black dog has a great collection of movies you won't find on a streaming site! They're usually really helpful when trying to find those obscure films that you can't recall the title of! So great to have thus gem in the neighborhood!

Anachronistic? You bet! Usually when I tell out-of-towners that one of the best spots in Vancouver is a tiny video rental store on Commercial Drive, they find it hard to believe. But for those who are looking for more variety and heart than the average streaming service can provide, I can't recommend Black Dog enough. The staff are friendly and super knowledgeable, and always have great suggestions when you arrive at checkout. Whether you know it or not, they will almost certainly have what you're looking for. That a place like Black Dog still exists in the year 2020 is a miracle, and I'm glad it does. Next time you search Netflix and find they don't have the movie that you're looking for, give Black Dog a try.
