Myself and my partner attempted to stay here and were disappointed with our experience. Our first impression of the place was not quite what we had expected. The staff did not feel welcoming, there were three men who would be sat on the reception's sofa having a great time until the guests came to check in, where their entire demeanour would change; as if we were disturbing them.
The common area was an open hall - so quiet you could hear a penny drop. It was not an encouraging place to talk to fellow travellers and I don't attribute this to the people around us, I blame the unfriendly vibe.
When we got to our room, the sour taste in our mouths was not improved. We had booked the 20 person dorm but were shocked by how uncomfortable we felt in there. To be clear, we were inter railing for a month and enjoyed staying in all other hostels, we know the risks of dorm sharing but this was like nothing else we experienced. Firstly, we were unnerved to hear that none of the rooms doors had any form of lock on them. Me and my partner were assigned beds that were on the complete opposite sides of the (rather large) room. Her bed was surrounded by nearly naked older men, and mine was similar except for the soaked undergarments laid to dry all around my bed.
We did not feel safe in the room and beds we were assigned so we agreed to ask at reception to get moved to a more private room. The man at the reception was fairly understanding, he tried getting us in a better room but it was fully booked up. To my surprise, they did offer me a refund which I didn't expect because we'd had this reserved for about 6 months. We settled for a 50% refund which I'm unsure if I ever got, but I never expected it so I don't mind.
Overall, there's a lot to like, the kitchen and dining space is nice and its in a great location. However, the most important thing in a place like this is safety, and we feel it missed the mark completely.
