Interesting story about how Irish and English men were separated by this gate. The gate house registration office can still be seen on the left behind the bars if you face towards the black church before you pass the gate.

It is what it is. Look at it on the black abbey

Dit poortje dateert van lang geleden. Ze gaf toegang tot het omwalde Kilkenny voor de reizigers komende van the Black Abbey, die buiten de stadsmuren lag. Het klooster was het twee klooster van de volgelingen van Sint-Dominicus in Ierland. Zij droegen zwarte kappen over hun witte pij. En vandaar de naam van de abdij en de poort.
