Black Powder Tavern

Today was my second time coming, the first being a year ago, was an unforgettable evening. I had the meatloaf, one of the more affordable meals, and I knew if ever in the area again i would have to come back, it was amazing (not as good as mom makes it though) Today I had the filet mignon special with potatoes and carrots. Possibly the best steak and definitely the best carrots i have e every had the pleasure to consume. Ellegant, refined, patriotic, and yet cozy atmosphere. I will be thinking of this meal for quite some time.

Amazing place a few minutes drive from our house. We've driven past it a bunch of times but never stopped in. Glad we did. I wouldn't call what the wife and I do some Thursdays a "date night" -- more of having just enough childcare to escape the chaos for 60 to 90 minutes to get a couple drinks, and app or two and plan/plot/scheme how we're going to survive the next week. And so, it's vital having a rotation of places where we can (a) sit at the bar -- ain't no time for waiting for a table, (b) come slightly bedraggled and won't be (obviously) judged, and (c) where the drinks and food are stellar (cause you have to amortize the cost of the childcare over the food and drinks). Black Powder Tavern is that place! The menu was massive and inviting, the drinks were delicious as were the wings (and I would come back for the wings alone -- they were perfect: small, meaty with a nice crisp, not the huge rubbery kind that I hate; hot tangy sauce), and the brussel sprouts were awesome. I'm not a beer guy but if that's your thing your thing, this is your place as they have a lot of it, lol. For food at a new place for us we usually start with the basics and then explore. We're definitely coming back -- BPT is in the rotation and we might even bring the kids next time:-)

Staff were extremely open and friendly. Service was excellent and attentive. We enjoyed and appreciated the historical decor and ambiance. My family enjoyed the experience and the food. We are looking forward to coming back.

Went there for lunch with my daughter. Food was meh. Service was friendly but slow for business lunch. My main problem with the place was that it was freezing. I had asked the to hostess to someplace warm and preferably buy a booth. They were able to sit us by a booth but it felt like the window was open. We eventually had to move to a table just to warm up. The salad that I ordered was all right but the hamburger that my daughter ordered was way too sloppy and she was unable to keep the sandwich together after a couple bites. Just way too much moisture for a burger. After all and said and done it was nearly 50 bucks for a business launch with no drinks, not even a soft drink.

The parking lot was full on a Friday Night. Inside it was a mix of families and friends catching up. Service was great. Food was good. Not much for a vegetarian, I was looking for a good salad. Got the fish and chips as a treat. Nice interior with live music and various tvs in the bar showing the philly sports games.

I was here for the first time and the steak here is so delicious I don't remember when I ate delicious food there... I advise you to be here and definitely try the steak... the place is delicious, the soul is very relaxed... the people here are nice, calm, cozy and safe

A very cool, old-timey vibe with live music (sax player who sang), friendly employees, and lots of wood touches make the place fun. Beef cubes in the chili, great seasoning in the Cajun mac n cheese, and perfectly grilled burgers make the food just as good as the feel of this place. Definitely the go to after Valley Forge (we found it from a guide's recommendation).

To start our waiter Jason was the Best. Well versed in the History of the Tavern and the menu. He gave us Excellent service. We started with an Espresso Martini, my husband had a Smoked Old Fashion, with Cherry wood. Quite tasty. Lafayette’s Onion Soup to start. It was one of the best onion soups I’ve had. It was silky, smooth, and full of flavor and Gruyère, Cheese was just the best on top. Also the Pub Plate, Fig jam on pork pate what a delightful twist and delicious, also the smoked brisket with pub mustard. Excellent choice. Needless to say I didn’t share too much with my husband. His Wagyu Truffle Burger, medium rare with Parmesan Truffle fries was also cooked to delectable perfection. I’m so sorry that I didn’t take pictures of our lunch the way it was played. It was so appetizing before we even tasted it. I would definitely recommend going to the Black Powder Tavern. We will be going back again.

Went here with a client last week and enjoyed it! Ambiance and service were good; the food was great! We shared the Crispy Brussel Sprouts ($12 - Hoisin glaze, Sesame Seeds, Nori, Wasabi Mayonaise) and i think these may very be one of the best brussels I've ever had. Wow; they definitely blew me away and I am going to try to emulate the recipe at home. Both of us ordered the giant Wagyu Truffle Burger ($27 - Half-Pound Wagyu Beef Patty, Fontina Cheese, Crisp Prosciutto, "Frizzled" Onion Rings, Arugula, Truffle Aioli, Brioche Bun). This is a pricey burger but it was really good. Was it the best burger ever? Nah but I did enjoy it very much, however, I really couldn't taste too much truffle. You're definitely paying up for the Wagyu...I have had regular burgers that have been just as good as this Wagyu one but again, I did enjoy it. And it was huge and was packed with delicious stuff. Still, I'd even go as far as saying it was a standout burger compared to some others I have had. The rest of the items on the menu sounded appealing too. Prices were definitely comparable to where I'm from (L.A.) but this is suburban Philly so I don't know if they're high or not. Neat fact: The building dates back to 1746 and served historical figures during the American Revolution like George Washington, Marquis de Lafayette and Freiderick Wilhem Von Steuben. If you're in the area, I'd definitely recommend Black Powder Tavern.

Conveniently located across the road from Trader's Joe's is a historic watering hole with a warm woods interior & friendly staff. Appreciated the beer list which included a style for everyone, enjoying the draft Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier (a personal fav). The Crispy Calamari app had a clean taste, served w/ marinara & lemon aioli. Could've used a few more tentacles as it was mostly small rings, but it was battered & fried perfectly & a generous serving. Mains- The Wagyu Truffle Burger has a good flavor mostly due to the addition of crispy prosciutto. Was hoping for a little more truffle, a little more of everything, as some elements were barely there, but the combination of flavors was smart. The fries were disappointing. Opt for the upgraded sweet potato fries which are fluffy, crisp, wedges of textured sweet potato. Full stop. No need for a dipping sauce or even ketchup. Had my $27 burger been served w/ a worthier side I would've been pleased.

Great spot for a group get together. The chicken pot pie was divine. Also liked the chicken wings as an appetizer.

Looks great from the outside, we thought it was going to be fancy dining. Decorated for the Holidays. Tarvern food. Great beer list. I had the Meatloaf. It was delicious, the mashed potatoes serving was way to much, they should cut the serving in 1/2. Decent amount of green beans. Wait staff was very accomodating. Fiancee ordered a Burger medium well. It came out Rare. She sent it back and they fixed it, but she was out of the game by then. Loaded Potato Chips were a nice appetizer but the bacon should have been sprinkled throughout. Not just on the bottom. I was questioning if they even put them on there at first. If in the are we probably would chose another establishment.

I met someone there for a leisurely brunch. The atmosphere was perfect - not too dark or too loud. The food was good. I had tomato basil bisque and the mushroom flatbread. There was a nice serving of mushrooms on the flatbread and the pesto was tasty. There was a bit of a soggy bottom that was likely due to oils from the cheeses and pesto. Overall though, it was tasty. The size is large enough to share (2-4 people). My date had the special - filet eggs Benedict. The steak looked nicely cooked and he enjoyed it. I look forward to going back and trying something else. There are lots of tasty options - salads, burgers, huevos rancheros ... my only reason for removing a star is because I felt like we were being rushed. The waiter was great, but he visited the table far too often. Once he came over with half the food still on our plates and asked if we wanted to see a dessert menu. Later I realized he was rushing us because he wanted to close the ticket before his shift ended.

My bf wanted us to try this spot on the whim because we always pass by this place! I was reluctant because I'm not one to try random restaurants in the middle of the road that I've never heard of before. However, on a Friday evening, upon entering the parking lot, we were greeted with the valet as the lot was full, so they had valet service free-of-charge. Hm. As we entered the restaurant, I was amazed at how busy and lively it was inside. All of the tables were full, the guitarist/singer was playing beautifully, and the decor stuck to the old American theme. We ordered BPT Poutine which was divine. Meaty short-rib, crispy fries, and indulgent gravy. I ordered a beer, and it really hit the spot. I look forward to coming here again and trying something new!

My family came here tonight for the first time and loved it - apps were tasty, main dishes were perfect. Loved the meatloaf, my kids loved the salmon. Ice cream at the end was a treat! Live music was a plus as well! Wait staff was great and spent time with manager (Kevin?) and he was welcoming and told us stories of the building. Will definitely return next time we're in the area!

Service was good. Drinks ok. Food requires some improvement. Two tiny fish sticks for $22.00??? The fish tasted very greasy and just was not great. Nice ambiance decide to visit after hiking Valley Forge National Park. We didn't want chain food at King of Prussia but i think we could have done better somewhere else. Enjoyed this historic factor of the tavern but that was about it.

Went here in celebration of a family member's birthday. Interesting plaque outside about how this building has been around since the late 18th century. Definitely lean heavily into the revolutionary feel. Wish the menu had some more options, nothing really excited me and I felt bad I had to make some substitutions. Service was fine, our server Emma(?) was nice. Our table was right by the door and sometimes blasted us with hot air but that can't really be helped. Next time will specify in the reservation not to be sat there. Pretzel sticks: disappointed there were only 3 sticks (we are a family of 5) but the sauces (mustard and cheese) were really good. Honey Mustard Chicken Sandwich: 4/5 couldn't taste the mustard which was disappointing but the ciabatta bread was good. Black Tavern Club: 5/5 Summer grain bowl: 5/5 could have used some more veggies and less quinoa Short rib grilled cheese: 4.5/5 horseradish would have been fine on the sandwich (instead of on the side) but the meat was really good and I liked the chip Short rib grilled cheese (sub provelone and add spinach) I do feel like I turned it into my own little panini but whatever. The sweet potato fries were very large and crinkle cut which I thought was unique. Overall kind of average but would probably go here again

10/10! We came for a few drinks and apps and everything was amazing. Our service was the best part, Jason was so attentive and we were never left waiting for anything!

Solid food and good service in a nice spot. Parking is valet. Sat on the patio which was great in nice weather. Inside looked very nice as well. Our server was great. To drink, I got the apple cider sparkler. It was very refreshing and not sweet, which I prefer. Husband got the mule which was great. We split the crab dip. Great flavor and loved that it came with both crostini and celery. I did the vegetable grain bowl with chicken. It was a huge portion but unfortunately a bit bland. Didn't taste like anything was seasoned. Chicken was cooked well though. My husband got the chicken pot pie which he really enjoyed. I felt it could also use a bit more seasoning but again chicken cooked well and a very good crust. Would come back, just would skip the grain bowl.

Stopped here after a trip to Valley Forge. I was seated as soon as I walked in. Place was moderately busy. Ordered the pick 3. Waitress didn't exactly explain what that or soup was. I think she presumed I was a regular. Salad and fries were standard and hit the spot. Chicken on sandwich was well fried and crispy but the bun fell apart and was too big for the chicken.

Great experience, good food. Perfect for a corporate lunch! Dana was an awesome server

I'm surprised I did not come across this place I'm the 1 year I've been living in this area. However I've been here twice in a week, so that's saying a lot. Great beer collection, both on tap as well as bottles. Couple of dishes that I'd recommend. 1. Poutine - I've had a lot of poutine when I visited Canada and I've had poutine in the US. Fair to say that most of the poutine in the US has been below par. Not this time. I thought the poutine here was comparable to the best of Canada. 2. Schnitzel - I spent some time in Prague last month and had quite a bit of schnitzel there so was curious to see how this place would compare. Again, not disappointed. I had the same server April both times and she was wonderful. Id visit this place in a heartbeat.

This is a review for a group event- they were extremely accommodating, offered good options for our group order, portions were plenty, prices in line with expectations. They also had a good variety of options to reserve on the premises and to serve for vegetarians. I was quite impressed with the charcuterie- it was a wide variety of quality meats, cheeses, nuts, jams, mustards, multiple types of crackers- far beyond your typical meet and cheese platter. The service was also fantastic with almost no time where we had to wait for someone to check on an order. The beverage options are not lengthy or creative but they are comprehensive and will fit all palates. Parking is slim in prime times, they do have valet but you may just want to schedule to come early. I absolutely would recommend this place for a business or group event any day.

Apparently a tavern that was in existence at the time of Valley Forge. Very nice dining room and bar area. I had Lafayettes Onion soup which was good. Also had the chicken pot pie. The crust and ingredients had good flavor but the broth in the pie was relentlessly bland. I kept adding salt and pepper but it never helped. It was so bland that biting into a chunk of potato gave a pop of flavor. My wife had the tomato basil soup and she thought it might be the best such soup she has had. The club sandwich was typical. It was a good experience and I'd recommend it, but not the pot pie.

Stopped in for a quick lunch after visiting Vally Forge. Burgers got rave reviews; fish tacos were just ok, Brussels sprouts were great, good review on the pot pie (served "molten lava hot") and loaded potato chips were a good, greasy, cheesy, crunchy treat. Service was a little awkward and our appetizers arrived moments before our main courses so the timing was weird....but the people were nice and the food quality was decent. Thought the inside would have a more historic vibe, however, it's more rustic modern/casual.

Party of five on Wednesday at 5:30 the place was packed it was our first time here the one negative is the parking lot is very limited however they do have valet parking thankfully we had a reservation looks like the happy hour is very popular but that's only at the bar area however the drinks & food were the Star of the evening

Everything went great for our party last night in the upstairs room. The very friendly manager checked in on us often and the two wait persons were very efficient and nice. We couldn't have been more pleased with how the evening went. Thank you!

The food here is amazing and the service is just as good. Our server Jason was absolutely the best. He is very friendly and very informative when we quizzed him on the history of the building. 10/10

From the service to the food everything was exceptional!! Glory did a fantastic job recommending food and beverages. The wagyu truffle burger was cooked to perfection and tasted amazing. We will be back again!!! Highly recommend this restaurant.

I had low expectations based on some reviews, but was pleasantly surprised by this place. The burger came with a toasted pretzel bun and was very juicy. The turkey club was perfectly moist and not dry at all, with generous turkey and bacon as well as very tasty chips. Both had really excellent produce: crisp lettuce and fresh tomatoes that actually tasted like tomatoes. The chicken pot pie also had good produce with a golden flaky crust, but it was a little bland wish it had more herbs and flavor in general. Ambience is fine, nothing special. Service was efficient and out of the way, which I prefer.

I'm giving this 3*'s only because I've had good experiences in the past. My husband and I went here for date night last night. We got dressed up, even though it's more smart casual, but we paid for a babysitter so we wanted to have more of an experience. We got there early for our reservation so we grabbed a drink at the bar. That was by far the best part of the experience. They had live music playing that created a nice ambiance. My husband got a lavender martini and I got a spicy mango marg. Both were tasty, but the mango marg was a little too sweet for me. We then headed to our booth in the back room of the restaurant. Our server was fantastic, the second best part of our night. From there it went downhill. We ordered the chopped salad and a beer. The salad came out within 30 seconds. It was great, but we finished that before our drinks even came out and we were not eating fast. Next came our crab dip. It was not good at all. It had a bit of a sour taste and the crustini was too crispy and fell apart when you tried to add dip. The dip came before the beer as well. For our mains, we both got fish and chips. We honestly didn't even eat our meals because the experience was so uncomfortable. After the live music stopped, there was no music at all. The lights weren't dimmed at all either. We were basically in a quiet bright room with just kitchen noises. We were sat at 6pm on the dot and were boxing our food/paying the bill at about 6:25pm. Three courses in under 25 min - Poor experience for a date night. I'm not sure we will come back, but if we did we would just grab a high top in the bar during happy hour to enjoy the live music and get some small bites/drinks. The happy hour menu had some great deals!

Very friendly staff, and lovely building. Lots of good food hits: brussel sprouts were awesome, poutine was also very good and very filling. We got chicken pot pies which were ok, pretty bland but nice crust. Salmon which was pretty good as well. And a southwest chicken sandwich which was very good. Solid choices but a bit expensive for sure. Drinks were also very good.

I've been here a few times and it'a pretty good. The staff are very friendly, especially the bartender Haley; she's great!! There's a great happy hour here. The Brussels sprouts were to die for. Big chunks of bacon with blue cheese crumbles and balsamic glaze. Highly recommend!! The sliders were also very good and a great deal for HH. The seasonal sangria wasn't my favorite. It tasted like cold cinnamon. The French onion soup is usually very good but last night was pretty flavorless and cold. The meatloaf is good and very moist. The sauce is a bit bitter and more of a ketchup base than a bbq base.

The building is very historic it reminded me of when Washington meet his Generals. Including the food very authentic to the 18th century.

Really solid spot for just going out to get some drinks and the watch the game, or if you wanted to have a nice sit down meal with your family. They have complimentary valet which is a nice touch, and something you wouldn't necessarily expect at a tavern, but when you pull out and see how there rarely any parking available, you know you are about to step into something special. A lot of the interior decoration is old-school feeling, with great usage of rich-wood finishings & furniture. It feels very homey, and a great spot to post up on a cold winter night (which was the scenario for us.) They have a solid menu, with a nice variety of the nostalgic "momma's" home-cooked dinners (meatloaf, mac & cheese, soups, etc.) Their drinks were really good too - I thought their espresso martini was one of the better I've had around the the suburbs. I ordered their steak frites, and it was cooked at a perfect medium-rare. The meat tasted great on it's own, but of course with the melted herb butter and aioli it was served with, it hit all the right taste buds. We also had their mushroom flatbread and fried brussel sprouts, everything was really good! Despite how busy it was, I thought our service was attentive and helped us keep moving, as we were in somewhat of a hurry. Would definitely recommend!

Cool Colonial Pub in historic Valley Forge setting! Offering true "Pub Fair", great drinks at a reasonable price! Nice outdoor area & great place for larger parties. Staff is very friendly!

Very nice place. The food is good. The selection of foods is limited. The price of everything is overpriced, especially the drinks. I don't really get this place. I've been to numerous restaurants and this is no longer a place I can afford or have any inclination to visit. I get that prices have gone up but for what you get this place is not worth it. A margarita in a martini glass, really! Come on now, that's just insane. Four people, four meals, six drinks over $200. If I was having steak or fish I would get it but two meals were hamburgers, one salad, and fish and ships. I can go to a dozen other places and get a much better meal and drinks for the same or less. I can say we tried it but won't ever see the inside again.

I ordered the cedar plank salmon which was drenched in butter... like soggy and gross. My girlfriend ordered the two filets, one was overcooked and the other was rare when she had asked for medium. I would not dine here again.

We've been here five times for happy hour and also for dinner. The restaurant dining area is very warm. The waiter was friendly and accommodating. The live music on this Friday night added to the overall atmosphere . It was very calm and settling after our two hour drive from NYC. The musician played the violin and she sang a song from The Little Mermaid to a couple of diners' (toddlers). It was very touching and beautiful. Our experiences here have always been outstanding. Today, one of the entrees (shrimp and penne genovese) was below par. If I could rate this dish separately , it would be one star. The chef's assistant probably did not strain the pasta properly, and therefore, this resulted in a tasteless and VERY watery dish, as you can see in my video below. The dish came with five shrimps which unfortunately, was also a bit over cooked and flavorless. We will not be ordering this dish again. The Beef Short Ribs was excellent as usual. Very flavorful and a good size of beef. It came with creamy mash potatoes to die for, and spinach (substituted). Definitely worth the price of admission. We love this place, and will be back.

Love this place, it's become our go to restaurant for great food and atmosphere. The staff are so friendly and accommodating.

Waited to go to Black Powder a few times before leaving a review. I've been to their brunch, dinner and happy hour. The ambiance has been the same each time - fairly subdued, borderline boring. But no stars deducted. The drinks have been good, but not spectacular - Likely what one would expect in an isolated tavern in a fairly sleepy part of town. The service has been good as well. Friendly and a little rough around the edges, but that's what I like! The food. That's where I must deduct 2 stars. The food is average at best. And some dishes are straight up overpriced (and not good). Some reviewers have had great culinary experiences at Black Powder, but not me. I'm not a foodie, there are simply much better options in the area. I'll go back for a drink and an app at happy hour, but I'll pass on another full fledged meal!

We chose this restaurant because of its historical relation to the Valley Forge area. The ambiance inside was nice although the music playing when we arrived (and through our meal) was definitely not conducive to a relaxing time while we were eating. My dad and brother in law ordered the fish & chips. They both said the flavor was good although for the price it seemed there should have been more fish. I did not taste anyone else's food, so I can say the short rib poutine I ordered was good as was my side salad. The short rib gravy was tasty as it was well seasoned, but unfortunately there were not very many cheese curds as I had been hoping for. This is probably being a bit nit picky, but we had been enjoying amazing food throughout our visit back east. While not terrible, this was sadly our least favorite due to the loud music and mediocre food.

Food, service and ambience were all great. Wait for table not too bad even though restaurant was busy and there were 5 of us. Have eaten here multiple times for dinner and lunch, indoors and outdoors with all good experiences as I recall. I think my only complaint was a wobbly outdoor table once. Have ordered the chicken pot pie on multiple occasions. Price point was reasonable. I would rate our visits 4-5 stars but listing as 5 because it has been consistently good and never sorry we went there.

The service and ambiance were great- but the food was disappointing. My beer was flat. My husband got the fish, shrimp and chips and it smelled fishy. I had what was listed as a prime burger- but the meat was not even as good as a mcdonald's burger, and the pretzel bun was stale. I got a cheesecake for dessert, because I was still hungry, but it was awful too. I only ate 2 bites- it tasted like it had been left uncovered in a fridge with lots of other things. BUT-- the espresso was phenomenal! no joke- damn good espresso. In short I loved everything, but the food. I hope they get a new chef and learn not to lie about using "prime".

Service was top notch. Jessica was very good. The food was incredible. The decor was very pleasing. I wish we would have tried it sooner. When it was another restaurant is was SO loud and eh. I noticed the current owner fixed the acoustics. I will be back. Finally, another great place to eat and one that appears to love history. My only complaint and it's a small one is that the table had an uneven surface top making balancing your glass interesting at times.

Their fry calamari are the best. But the Pumpkin beer with meatloaf together is divine like a party in the mouth.

Great service, ambiance and food! Nice bar and restaurant feel. Nice light country music. Great beer, wine, liquor and cocktail selection. The sweet potato fries are delish! Cool revolutionary inspired art throughout! Would definitely go again if in the area.

A very nice place to go for a late dinner and a few drinks. Tasty food and a nice selection of craft beers. All the staff was very pleasant and attentive. Would definitely go back

Solid happy hour option. Decent beer list and their apps are great! I'm super picky with Brussel sprouts, but these were solid. The pork belly lettuce wraps left me picking a bit of fat out of my mouth, but the flavor was on point and I would happily order again. Their patio is a nice summertime option as well. I probably wouldn't visit for a real dinner, but definitely on the local drinks and apps list

My hotel recommended this location. The operating hours posted on the paper on the door are incorrect. They recently reopened on Mondays until 8pm.. Thankfully the hostess allowed me in at 7:40pm and directed me to the barstaff to ask for a to-go order. The bartender was lovely! He was so kind and said that I could order anything I wanted, despite the lack of time. He gave me a glass of wine, a menu, and asked me to sit at the pub tables. I didn't want to keep them any longer so I asked for his suggestions for something they could prepare quickly. I ordered their brussell sprouts, pub fries, and wings. After settling up he asked again if I wanted another drink and if I wanted to stay and eat. I thanked he and the host and slipped out to eat at my hotel. I was in and out of there in "one glass of wine time." I was very happy with my experience and would recommend it to anyone passing through or local.

Bathroom was really small. Service was kind of slow, but food was amazing. The waitress was really kind, and the cajun Mac-n-cheese was unbelievable.

Nice place with great staff and friendly service. The parking was a pain and having the valet was helpful but not necessary. The menu was quite small (limited options) and it was a bit pricy for what you received. We ordered the Mac n cheese (which was good) and the pot pie (which was very bland) Would recommend stopping in only if there's something in particular you want to try

Ordered food delivery from here before and we enjoyed it. Had to try it in person and wasn't impressed. Our waitress mind didn't seem to be on us. No complaints about he beer baked pretzel sticks. Those were tasty! We asked to split a chopped salad with no bacon and when our salads finally arrived they were covered in bacon. When they brought our replacement salads the cheese and toppings didn't look as abundant as the previous salad that was brought out. Im assuming the floor manager came to us during our meal and asked how everything was but offered no apologies. He simply said, "glad to hear we're able to get you the right salads". My husband ordered the fish and chips - fish portion was very small but the fries were good. I got the Summer vegetable grain bowl which was not good at all. I picked through my food and left the rest. Bill was horrific for the quality and food portions we received. Between the horrible service and mediocre food we will be skipping this place. If you're here for a drink the appetizers would probably be worth trying.
