Addendum: Furthermore we have seen security try to evict an elderly man with walker who lives in our neighbourhood, in the middle of the day, during the worst of the heat wave, who was only sitting quietly outside urban fresh with groceries from the very store. So even well-behaved customers who purchase from the establishment & give it business could be arbitrarily shooed away. Absolutely nonsensical, shameful, deplorable conduct.
Decent place but weird experience with security, we sat at a quiet spot to have tea, read & do some work as we had construction at home, it seems like somebody felt threatened by a girl trying to nap & called security on my daughter while I went to the washroom, or security was so bored he had to pick problems out of non-issues to look productive. He approached her to tell her she wasn't allowed to sleep here. She was confused & communicated calmly but he was firm to disallow any “sleeping.” Not even a nap break between computer work or meals? Or is the sight of a sleeping resting person unsightly to the public image of a corporate work centre? Perhaps they assumed she was homeless, but even then it's a communal space, isn't it? Sure, her hair was a bit disheveled & clothes casual, but not unpresentable, it's 30+°C with an extreme heat wave outside, who isn't sweaty & tired? She was quiet & not disruptive, unlike some man around the corner who was so loud & angry on the phone it even scared us.
Lived around the neighbourhood almost ten years now never experienced such unusual, almost discriminatory behaviour, it was not aggressively confrontational but it was still strange, even stranger from another person of colour who surely has his own experiences with discrimination.
Ironically, the plaque next to our table had a motto engraved in multiple languages promoting community, the phrase on the bottom has a nuance essentially meaning “healthy habitat for all to enjoy” but I guess only selective elites are really welcome?
Certainly it would be an issue if anyone were disruptive & a threat to public safety, but what is wrong with ordinary, non-disruptive, unproblematic citizens enjoying an amenity? At the end of it all, aren't we all just people with lives to live?
Our identity & intentions were mistaken today but anyone can lose any of their taken-for-granted privileges at anytime under any unexpected circumstances, let us be considerate.
