The Blue Colony is one of our favorite spots to stop at on the long drives between New England and New York! We discovered this hidden gem a few trips ago, and ever since then, it's been a must-stop spot on our road trip adventures!
The food is pretty standard diner fare, but the menu is sizable, and there is something for everyone. I always tend to order an omelet, and I haven't been disappointed! Go for the Italian Omelet, stuffed with sausage, tomato, onion, and gooey mozzarella cheese, or the California Omelet with a refreshing dose of avocado. If you're in the mood for something more savory, be sure to check out the Matzo Ball Soup - a steaming and flavorful bowl of chicken broth with pillowy matzo balls - the best pick me up after a long drive!
But the crown jewel of Blue Colony has to be the house made challah bread. Oh my GOD this is the stuff that dreams are made of. Seriously, a 3 hour car ride to this place is worth it for the soft, eggy, tantalizing bread. They'll give it to you in a basket, fresh from the oven and slathered in butter, or you can order it toasted to complement a breakfast dish or piled high as part of one of their decadent incarnations of French Toast. I haven't tried the French Toast yet, but when we return, I have my sights set on that for sure. They also sell it by the loaf as well, so you can take it home and savor it even after memories of your meal fade.
So the next time you're driving through Connecticut, be sure to venture off the highway for some amazing diner grub (and challah) at the Blue Colony diner!
