Blue Heron Grill

We’ve come here a few times now and the food is always good and we’ve always had good service. They have a really nice, big patio if the weather is decent. They have super good burgers and wraps! We also like the pickle flatbread pizza. I highly recommend getting tater tots as your side and getting the seasoned sour cream to dip them in! My only complaint is that some items on the menu seem a little overpriced. Other than that, this is a really great place to catch up with family and friends for dinner & drinks.

The restaurant was not very crowded. We were able to choose our seats, and we opted for a spot away from other patrons and the bar, as we had several hours to spare before my son's soccer game. The waiter did not appear to be in any hurry to have us leave. The atmosphere was peaceful and relaxed. While the children's meal was a bit pricey, it was a pleasant place to enjoy a quick meal.

Had dinner with my Scentsy Mama. Decent selection of food. The service was amazing. I only gave 3 on atmosphere because the dining area was a bit loud because of the music playing but other than that I have no complaints this time

Good size menu. Outside area very nice. Service was great and food was great as well. A good spot to hit when riding the bike. Has motorcycle parking.

Came here for dinner after a day of hiking. Nice outdoor patio area. The chimichanga was amazing. The drinks and dessert were all good. Service was excellent. Enjoyed our meal here.

This place is always just "okay"... But it's priced like it should be gourmet, high scale. When we go here, it's like classy Perkins. The food isn't really any better, the service is fine, the atmosphere is fine. Every time I want it to be good or great but it's just okay. I'm sure I'll be back but it's not a favorite.

This place is such a wonderful part of our community! The food here never disappoints! Our favorite are their steak and/or chicken fajitas. But recently, I tried their new menu item, the Bourbon grilled salmon. I forgot to take pictures of my entree while at the restaurant so I am providing my leftovers pictures. Which I added my own sautéed baby cauliflower. Their cilantro lime rice is always a hit and the curried carrots were so delicious. Everything was cooked perfectly! Oh and make sure you get extra bourbon glaze sauce. Samantha/Bartender is absolutely the. best! Thanks Blue Heron and as always, we’ll be back! 🥰

Updated Review 6-2-24: Lunch on the patio with another couple and the food was MUCH better! We tried the New Orleans pasta dish, Wrangler Flat Bread w/GF Crust, Chicken Bacon Ranch Wrap w/Coleslaw, and the Chicken Fajitas w/lettuce cups in lieu of wraps. All the food was tasty - and the gluten free crust was surprisingly good (GF items are hit or miss) - the only thing we noticed was the low ratio of chicken to onions and peppers for the Fajita, it couldn't have been even 1/2 of a chicken breast from the looks. But the presentation for everything was excellent, the patio tables and chairs were clean and shaded, and the staff was friendly. 3-31-21: Met with family for a Sunday brunch, very nice atmosphere and friendly staff. The food and prices were good, they lose a star because the mini cinnamon rolls were undercooked on the bottom (think raw dough), and the eggs were all overdone. Over easy and up were more like medium yolks and all had a crunchy bottom - unexpected. We had a nice variety of food - chicken fried steak, tex mex skillet, biscuits and gravy, and a combo. The gravy was excellent!

Blue heron offers a good variety! I love the chicken wild rice soup but also recently just had their cilantro chicken rice soup and it was really good! We love getting the steak bites each time we come! The mushroom pasta and the coconut chicken has been a personal fave of mine. The set up of the place is very simple but service has always been good and it's always nice to have a range of choices for both drinks and food. We also get to enjoy playing pull tabs!

Went in for breakfast before a ladies day out. Was pleasantly surprised that ot was hustling and bustling, even at an early hour. Our server took really good care of our party of 6. Plates were large, enough to split easily or take home. Had several different options for breakfast, so couldn't go wring choosing this place so everyone could find something to enjoy.

We popped in here for a family lunch prior to Christmas. Upon arrival the place was PACKED, but we were seated quickly. The volume was a little loud for a family conversation, especially with Grandma and her hearing aids, but food and service were great. We got the steak bites and cheese curds to start. Everything arrived hot and fresh, incredibly fast for how busy the place was. The steak had a kick but was delicious, and the cheese curds super light. I snagged the sunny sliders as a risk and was not disappointed. I haven't seen these on the menu anywhere else and loved the combo of the Hawaiian roll, crispy sunnies and the sauce. I would love to go back for more. My mom got something new and didn't love it. She didn't complain, it just wasn't what she expected. Our server noticed and asked about it, and when she realized mom didn't like it and didn't eat it, she took it off our bill without being asked. This was above and beyond what was expected! It certainly wasn't the restaurant's fault she didn't like it, and them taking that step of service in the moment, especially on a busy day went a long way with me. I will for sure be back to visit next time I'm home!

I went to the Blue Heron Grill for dinner with friends and we had a great experience! The lighting was dimmed in the whole restaurant which really set the mood for an intimate dinner. Our server was very attentive and friendly. I ordered the Moscow mule which was pretty good and the coconut chicken bowl which was delicious! I would definitely recommend!

We were traveling north to Duluth and stopped here for lunch. It's a very nice place. I had the Greek salad with chicken. The chicken was grilled, moist and delicious. The salad was fresh Romain with Kalamata olives, a lovely feta, red onions small tomatoes and cucumbers. A sweet dressing came with it. (I would have had it less sweet.) Overall it was delicious! Service was fast and friendly. I'll be stopping here again when I'm in the area!

Worst service I have ever had in my life! We sat with drinks empty, late food delivery, my husband's meal was cold. Took 45 minutes to get our bill after requesting it TWICE!

Service is ok, depends on the day & time of day. We enjoy splitting the fajitas combo.

As a vegatarian hanging out with a Vegan, finding food at bar restaurants in the suburbs is not easy. In fact, it's hard. Really hard. After a long gravel bike ride nearby, we were thrilled to stumble upon the Blue Heron. In fact, we're a little stunned it's only three stars. The ambience is a step above a typical suburban bar restuarant. It was a little too hot after a long ride to eat outside, but their two patios looked delightful. We ate in the bar area which was airy and spacious with lots of natural light. We appreciated the spacing between all the tables. Getting down to the beverages. They have a well curated cocktail menus as well as a good wine and beer selection. We were pleased that they allowed my friend to sample the cider they had on tap before committing to a glass. It's a Sunday, so of course a bloody Mary was in order. I was thrilled that not only did the waitress offer a beer chaser without me requesting it, but I could choose any beer on the menu. Many restaurants will charge for that privilege. The bloody itself was okay . . they need to put a little more pizzaz in the mix, but it was nothing a little tabasco could not cure. We both ordered the vegan mexi wraps and really, really liked them. As noted, it's hard to find vegan food at a bar restaurant, and especially food that is both healthy and tasty. The only thing I would have done differently with the wrap was add black beans and a side of salsa. My friend ordered a side salad - again, very impressive. Mixed greens, instead of iceburg, and fresh veggies on top. I ordered the steamed broccoli which was smple but hit the spot. The menu had some great options for meat eaters and fish eaters, but we did not try any. We are just so thrilled at the options they had for us. The service was great - friendly waitress who was attentive despite multiple tables. And as noted above, she let us sample before buying. I would definitely recommend for anyone looking for lunch or dinner in the Hugo area.

Love the chicken salad or meatloaf! Worth the two hour drive from our place! Service is always great and the gift shop is cute

Just meh. Super disappointed today. All kids meals we so over seasoned the kids didn't eat it. I was hoping to get my favorite beef stroganoff, but they took it off the menu. Opted for the chicken Alfredo instead. It looked pretty but was so bland, and the little bits of chicken were so dry. Thankfully the French Onion soup was good. Otherwise I would have been leaving hungry. I'll probably still have to feed the kids a second dinner though.

Great food and service on a busy Friday night. Burger and pasta was great! Good date night spot!

We've always like the food & service at the Blue Herron but today's visit was not acceptable. The server was inattentive. We were practically done eating when our first beverage arrived. There was no acknowledgment at all. We asked for the check when our beverage arrived--only to wait & finally went in to get our bill. No one was at the front--our server was talking at a table & noticed me. She did apologize only to say just leave the bill there & walked away. I understand being busy & short staffed, but please act sincere.

The perfect place to meet on a bicycle ride: close to the trails with great lunch options (including some in the group who have different dietary restrictions). Since I was biking back to our original spot, I took a pass at the alcohol offerings...instead just lusting after lunch mates had great beers (16 oz Schools Octoberfest $6.25) and interesting cocktails (Razzatini was "amazing"). My French Onion Soup was delicious (not too salty/weak) topped with French bread cubes & melted Swiss cheese. The "Pick 2 Combo" was perfect for me: not too much food and reasonable price ($11.00). I enjoyed our lunch out on the patio with our group!

Just traveling through here to Duluth after a flight into MSP. So hungry that I forgot to take pics. We had the ham and bean soup and the French onion. Both amazing. So good that I took some home. I got the house heron salad with blue cheese. Also, amazing. Ha! Ha! See a trend here? :) BF had the coconut chicken bowl and he said it was great! Service was quick and friendly. Ambiance was very pretty with the Christmas tree and the chance to sit in either the dining area or bar. Even the hostess was quick and polite.

I really enjoy the food here. They're bloody Mary is decent. The flatbreads are amazing. If you are going to eat here, I recommend sitting at the bar or in the dining room. Both times that I have been here and sat at a hightop table in the bar area service has been subpar. It's almost like you're forgotten, and when you stop someone other than your server to ask for something you get frowned at. Waiting 20 minutes between drinks or getting your food delivered w/o a follow is not Great dining experience. Food is worth the price but the service should be better.

I ordered through door dash last night. I ordered a Cubano sandwich, cheese curds and cheesecake. 1 of each. when my order arrived there were 3 boxes all of which were written on saying what they were. I went to open the box that was for my sandwich only to find cheese cake. so i thought it was an honest mistake of mislabeling. i opened the one that said cheesecake only to find another cheesecake. I opened the cheese curds only to find out most them were just deep fried batter with nothing inside of them. I tried to contact the restaurant last night with no answer, no voicemail. so i let pictures and a review on door dash. I have ordered from here before and it was on my favorites list. I will no longer be ordering from this establishment. thanks anyway.

We had great service and great food! The blackened chicken sandwich and the steak avocado wrap were delicious! Our server Mia was great!

Favorite place around- large menu and the patio seating in the summer is wonderful. I've had several items off the menu and all were good. The chimichanga is delicious and the portion is overly generous. The Texas Patty melt was very tasty and it came with waffle fries that I dipped in their seasoned sour cream dip- so good. Beverages are topped off often and the staff has always been very attentive and friendly. We've been here many times in the past year and we are always satisfied!!

I get takeout from here often and am usually satisfied. But you can't take a bland, non-seasoned chicken breast, stick it on top of a mountain of onions and peppers and call it fajitas. Would NEVER order this again.

I gave them a 1 star last week for customer service at the bar and deceitful charging. The owner /manager commented on my review and now it's gone! It was a Google review so guess we can't look at reviews since businesses can pick n choose! Not good!

Food is delicious. Great environment. Service can be slow sometimes. The patio is amazing.

DISAPPOINTING AGAIN Got down this way again, and thought it would be a good place for an early dinner. I found a good spot at the bar, and got comfortable. I could view 5 tvs from my seat, and every single one was on the same station. Why do that? Never understood that train of thought. Non of the salads sounded like what I was in the mood for, except the steak salad. I can get that exact salad near my house for $12, and it is consistently perfect. So $18 on a hit or miss seemed excessive. Although the Coconut Chicken Salad was enticing, coconut doesn't always agree with me. Must have something to do with that pina colada night........ So to the burger menu! Now, when you promote "hand pattied " burgers, you set the bar pretty high. Add bacon, cheese sauce, and a pretzel bun, and that should be a slice of heaven. Plus, cooked to temp!!!! Bingo! Let's see Bacon Burnt Bun was all flattened (bottom of the bag) Lukewarm at best Cole Slaw barely over room temperature Sat in the window and died??? Probably However, it WAS a perfect M-Rare. And, the flavors were outstanding! If it had been warmer, it would have been memorable in a good way! Still hit or miss here, darn, I've had soooo much fun and good food here since it first opened years ago. I need to give a shout out for the eco-friendly to go boxes! Oh well, BRING BACK BACON WRAPPED SCALLOPS

A great location but unfortunately it is apparent. They are short staffed which impedes the experience . The food is good and fairly priced but nothing exceptional stands out. Supporting our local restaurant is always important so we will be back and hope that there will be improved service next time.

The food was absolutely horrendous, but the carrot cake was fantastic. Go figure. Good service, terrible food.

I was a little worried with only 3 stars, but glad I had dinner here. I was blown away and think the atmosphere was so beautiful, and that was only the start. Once I got my Cubano (Cuban) I was even more blown away. I live in Florida and have had many Cuban sandwiches so I know what good Cuban sandwich is, but honestly this was the best Cuban I have ever ate. Kudos to their chef! Who would have thought finding an incredible Cuba sandwich in Minnesota. I am so sorry I didn't take a photo because I was too eager to eat it. But I did take a photo of the grand finale, the Carrot Cake! It beeps when it backs up. WOW! Do not order this unless you have 4 friends or family to share. It is not only incredible tasting, you could hide behind. I did take a photo and placed a one dollar bill next to it to show the scale. Also the service and staff were outstanding. We ate on a Friday evening and everyone was busy as bees running around yet all the staff worked like a team taking orders. Some brought food out as quickly as possible, and our waitress was on point making sure we got attention without getting to much attention. She was incredible and I wish I would have got her name because I wanted to give credit where credit is due, but in all every staff member was incredible. The Blue Heron must have a great manager. This place needs to be upgraded to 5 stars, it is totally worth coming and more than once. Thank you for being such a great restaurant especially in these crazy times trying to deal with this corona virus, which brings me to the final comment. Blue Heron did an outstanding job making sure they followed required protocols and keeping every customer safe. Great job!

We love coming to Blue Heron. The food and atmosphere are great. I like the coconut chicken salad and the coconut bowl.

Really good Friday night fish fry. Cole slaw was also delicious and servings are generous for the price.

The Blue Heron is a great local grill, work a visit. I have eaten here a few times. The staff is always friendly and gives plenty of attention to the tables. They have a great patio out back, which overlooks a small pond and fountain. It's a great surrounding on a summer evening. They have great walleye bites and their burgers are filled with flavor and worth a try. This establishment is well worth your support and worthy of giving them a try.

We were in Hugo today and stopped by Blue Heron Grill. It is a sports bar with burgers, pastas, and salads. I ordered the coconut chicken salad which was very good. It was spring greens with strawberry's, pineapple and blue berries along with chicken breast coated with a coconut batter. The dressing was a sweet lemon poppy seed. I really enjoyed it. I would return here.

Super yummy! We ordered for delivery and the food was delivered promptly, still hot, and delicious. The husband really enjoyed their Cubano and I LOVED the sunfish sliders! Nothing was overly greasy, and they seem to use great quality ingredients! They were also super responsive when I emailed regarding allergens on their menu. Totally love that! This is going to turn in a monthly staple for us for sure!!!!

HORRIBLE SERVICE ALL OF THE TIME!!! we have lived less than 1 mile away from this restaurant for ~5 years and are so disappointed - we have been here NUMEROUS times!!! This is the only "American" restaurant in Hugo and the service is horrendous. "Management" has excused terrible service due to servers at customer tables having "potty breaks." - WOW!!! The most recent encounter resulted in quick drinks right away and then ZERO attention/service and part of our bill being taken care of by the restaurant due to horrible service. We must have changed into camo gear, because no one even looked at us or cared we were there from the restaurant. It's sad when our 8 year old has noticed and inquires about the level of service. Hopefully management from Blue Heron can fix this problem, as we have heard the same feedback from friends and family that have been at the restaurant. Enough is enough!!!!!!

Really fun atmosphere. Large wrap around bar with lots of TVs - great on game day. Good staff and food.

I really enjoy this place. They have amazing pasta and burgers. Service can be slow when busy but that's to be expected! Beautiful decor inside and a wonderful patio next to a little pond and fountain. Try this place out!

Service sucks and the bar tender's only serves males. The regulars are rude and the waitresses are unprofessional

Went here for lunch the other day. Nice waiters, but slow service. We had the chicken fajitas and the grilled chicken with garlic mashed potatoes and broccoli. The fajitas came with lots of toppings and you could choose between tortillas and lettuce wraps. I chose the lettuce wraps for a gluten free option and was happy I did! The chicken was very tender and seasoned and the garlic mashed potatoes were full of flavor. Big portions so we both had leftovers. Wasn't too busy around lunch time and they have indoor and outdoor seating and a bar. Prices were more on the spendy side for a grill so we were happy to have a $10 coupon.

I'm a vegetarian, last time I came I got Mac and cheese which I didn't care for at all. This time I got a super tasty portobello mushroom burger that was amazing! Melted cheese with lettuce and a tomato hit the spot. It came with your choice of a side and I choose french fries. They gave me a lot of food which I loved considering I can eat as much as a cow! The only thing about this place I don't love is it has very loud music. Also they have very limited options for vegetarians and probably about zero for a vegan. It's mostly seafood and meat, which makes sense I suppose considering the name.

We have been very careful with Covid precautions because we are older and our daughter was pregnant and did not have the vaccine yet. Well daughter has now been vaccinated and we went out last night 7/16/21 with friends to Blue Heron that we have been to before Covid. Now I understand the restaurants have been under a lot of financial stress and lots of turnover in employees but last night takes the cake. I like to order bone-in wings buffalo style. I ordered and received my wings and when I go to pick up the first wing the bone is stone cold. I mean colder than my fingers temp cold. I am not going to eat chicken that has not been fully cooked (I do not need to get sick) so I finally get the attention of someone and its the manager who had been walking around. Now I am not one to make a scene and her solution was to re-cook the wings.... RECOOK THEM! She said they will "wash" off the sauce and re-cook the wings and put new sauce on them! Now I probably should have insisted that they make new ones but like I said I am not one to make a scene and went...okay, lets see how this comes out. Well they did just that but now the wings were overcooked in spots and just not good. While I did eat them (I was pretty hungry) they have lost my business in the future. This saving of the cost of the wings lost them a customer. I tipped the waitress well (not her problem) but come on.....don't be cheap with your solution to the problem - it tells me that you are cutting corners in many other ways. We are not planning to come back.

Great food and nice owner's who are always present and the service is crazy fast. Amy is great.

We went for mothers-day dinner. Our waitress was not attentive at all. Waited 30 min's for waters. The good was cold and asked for supplies 3 different times for her to come back empty handed 3 different times. It was easier to go to the bar and get it ourselves. Was very unhappy with service and food. we will not be returning.

Not sure I will be sprinting back to this place in the near future which is too bad since it's one of my parents favorite places to dine. Pros: Patio- nice patio, but would be even better without all of the smokers smoke wafting over , but they need a place to go. Dining room or bar area to sit. Decent size menu with a decent variety to choose from. Decent food. My sandwich was good, the fries were syscoesque. Cons: The service on the patio stunk. We sat there for about 15-20 min while nobody came. Another table came in way after us and got served right away. We were told ours would be by in a few min. We finally had to go flag someone down to send her out. We were told it would be her in the first place and she acted like we were someone else's table and then said, why dont I just take your order. Wow, thanks. Really curt, and her actions and body language just felt like she wanted us to hurry up and go. I get it your busy or having a bad day, but the service was really disappointing here. We had to go ask for a kid menu, the hostess was another one who seemed a bit out off. The food was good, service was not.

We came only because it is close to home and convenient. The bad actitud and lack of personality from the server was inexcusable. She brought the wrong order and we asked to have it corrected her only comment was, that's strange. No apology or let me fix that right away. When she returned with the 2nd try the plate had nothing other than the meat. No dipping sauce, no garnish. Just a white plate and meat... the few times we have been here over the years the experience is always the same. Cut rate service in an attractive building. I guess that the justification for the over priced plates. It's no wonder there are so many negative reviews. Don't let the ambiance and we'll decorated inside fool you. This is a Small town bar that serves food with an inexperienced impersonal wait staff. We will not be back.

We've eaten here several times with mixed results. Lunch today was terrible. I ordered mshi mahi tacos. The fish was cooked to jerky. I tried to talk to our waitress, but she ignored my attempts to get her attention. Our drinks were never refilled. After waiting nearly 10 minutes for our bill, we left our table and went to the hostess stand to pay. The hostess found our waitress, who was surprised that I was unhappy with my meal or service. She was unable to process my credit card at the hostess stand, so left me standing while she left to run my card. I eventually found the manager in the bar, dealing with another complaint. The manager deleted the charge for my tacos, reran the bill, and suggested that no tip was deserved for the lack of service we received.

We have been coming to the Heron for years and continue to come back because of their amazing staff and great food. If you haven't had their chimichanga, you're missing out!

I brought my mother in law and sister in laws to this restaurant for brunch. They were very accommodating & even made a "welcome to the family" sign for our newest sister in law! Very good mimosas and Bloody Mary drinks. Breakfast was good, and reasonably priced!

Another unsuccessful attempt at Blue Heron. My date and I enjoyed the patio for the first time. We ordered two dirty martinis that ended up being about $11 bucks each. Eeek! We're in Hugo not Mpls and it's only Absolute vodka. Our servicer was nice she expressed that she was new. I ordered the steak bites app and my date was informed it was Wing night so he ordered two orders of bone in wings. About 5-10 minutes later our server came back and indicated bone in was not on special. So we decided only on one order instead. Then all of a sudden my steak bite app came out. The server reassured us that my dates food would be right out. About 10-15 minutes went by and his one order of wings came out. Our server mentioned due to the boneless special his food got pushed back. His wings had white spots all over them FREEZER BURN! The server explained that they do no freeze their meat. Well I'd like to know where the freezer burn came from then? Are we going to blame the meat distributor on this one? Some how the meat got freezer burn. It's disappointing to eat in front of my date before his food is out and then his food isn't even edible. All out FAIL again for the Heron. Funny thing is we ended up going down the road to the Blacksmith for great service and burgers. It's sad that a establishment the Blue Heron as nice as it is lacks in the food department on multiple occasions. So many bad reviews on Yelp. You think they would make some changes! Come on Manager Amy! Instead of urging people to come back and spend more money fix your failing food! Give people a reason to rave about the food because we can see from most of the reviews that's where Heron struggles.

Service was quite good. We ordered the steak bites, Mac and cheese and the New Orleans pasta (combo). Steak bites were tasty. They were billed as spicy, but I didn't find them overly spicy at all. If pepper is too spicy for you, you may think it too hot, but I am a spice whimp and I thought they were good. Mac and cheese was a little bland and the sauce seemed thin, but overall was good. New Orleans pasta was quite good, and was a large portion. Would definitely order again. Overall for atmosphere, service and taste, 4 stars. Was a little on the pricier side for all of that, but we'd go again.

Okay, have to say we've been here many times before just because it's close, convenient and they have bingo on Wednesdays (also Monday & Saturday). The food has been okay. That aside, tonight gives me hope this place may be turning over a new leaf and upping their game! We've never had great service here. The servers always seemed to be there right away and then disappear after the food came. Well, tonight our server, Wyatt, restored our faith in The Blue Heron. He was great! Not only friendly (as all the staff always was BTW) but also on top of everything!! What a nice change. Very impressed. The other part that made the night was both of us decided to try something new on the menu. We had Spaghetti With Meatballs and the new Avacado Steak Wrap. They were both VERY good!! Got the Spaghetti baked with cheese on it and the wrap was just yum!! Do have to add that their french fries are addicitive. The last couple times we've been here a "newer" manager has come by to check on us and also went out of her way to make sure our Blue Heron rewards card was used to the most of it's benefit so maybe they hired someone to get things in shape. Whatever it is, good job! Makes me want to go back more often!

We just had our sister's bridal shower here and Blue Heron did such a great job! The area we were able to reserve was perfect for our shower. The food was really good. I personally had the buffalo chicken wrap and my sister had the House Salad. Both were excellent. Drinks were made well and our server went above and beyond to make sure we were doing great. Abby had our whole group on her own and was very attentive. Thank you for making our shower memorable and special.

This is my favorite spot in Hugo. I like the staff, the food portions are massive and is almost always excellent. For as many times as I've eaten here I've been disappointed very few times, and when I am disappointed it's usually something like to much dressing or cheese.
