Blue Iris by Life House: First In

"Why book? Leave the old-school Nantucket establishment resorts for your parents. If you’re looking for an intimate hotel with immaculate design chops and a fantastic location in town, look no further. Set the scene Freshly opened in July 2022, the Blue Iris by Life House is the ideal spot to bring a significant other, a travel buddy, or just yourself. With only twelve rooms in the whole building, you’re unlikely to run into another guest while you’re here. As opposed to real estate investment firm Blue Flag Partners' other nearby hotels such as Faraway, which very much feels like a destination unto itself, Blue Iris blends quietly into its surrounding residential neighborhood. Come here for a quiet escape, not a see-and-be-seen affair. The backstory Built in 1838 for a wealthy whaling captain, 10 Hussey Street hails from Nantucket’s maritime golden age. It was, over the decades, a private residence and then a succession of salty, old school inns before Blue Flag Partners scooped it up and gave it the luxury treatment, reopening it this summer as the Blue Iris. From the outside, it still has all the historic character that makes Nantucket feel so authentic and special; inside, however, the building has undergone extensive renovations. The rooms The idea behind Blue Iris is a sort of design-forward, retro-inflected take on maritime cosmopolitanism. That’s a mouthful. Put another way, the design brief seems to be: what would a freewheeling 19th century sea captain from Nantucket’s heyday have brought home after years spent exploring the globe? You’ll see design touches such as Portuguese-inspired textiles and tiles, a custom Murano glass chandelier in the entryway, and nautical-feeling matte teal-painted woodwork and beautifully worn brass accents throughout. The result is a space that feels both fresh and lived in, and perhaps vaguely Nantucket-ish, but has an irresistible aesthetic unto its own. Food and drink There isn’t a restaurant at the Blue Iris, but that’s ok–sister property Faraway is a scant 400 feet away with its sceney, fun bar and restaurant Sister Ship. The Blue Iris does, however, offer a complimentary continental breakfast of coffees, croissants, overnight oats and so forth–just enough to get you fueled up and out the door to make the most of the day. There are also a number of charming cafés and bakeries (The Green Market, Born and Bread, Stoke ACK) within a two block radius for a quick refuel at any time of day. The neighborhood/area Hussey Street is a pretty clutch location in town–you’re just steps from all the restaurants, bars, shops and action at any time of day or night, but tucked away on a residential side street which is wonderfully serene come nighttime. Step outside your front door and you’re in the thick of things. But you can also sleep with the windows open and let the sea breeze into your room, hearing (almost) none of the hubbub from town’s busier corners. The service Maybe it’s because this property works with seasonal staff, on an island, in the middle of a pandemic, with historic staffing shortages literally everywhere, but some details seemed to through the cracks. Half the menu at the complimentary breakfast, for example, was mysteriously unavailable. That being said, when we asked for a steamer, the Blue Iris staff brought it up to our room within seconds, so it’s entirely fair to chalk any hiccups up to new hotel growing pains. All in all, visitors should come to the Blue Iris for its wonderful location and its highly photogenic decor–if you want a white glove service experience, you can pay twice the price at The Wauwinet. For families You may not want to be that family that brings a screaming toddler into a twelve-room historic inn (noise does travel easily from room to room), but book one of the larger suites and there’s definitely room to bring an extra family member or two. Anything left to mention? There’s a really lovely garden terrace behind the building, complete with comfy lounge chairs and a fire pit for late nights (hushed, of course, this is a neighborhood after all). On a hot Nantucket summer night, there’s hardly a more magical place in the middle of town to unwind." - Todd Plummer

The Blue Iris (Nantucket, Massachusetts) 2 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"The Blue Iris is an old Nantucket sea captain’s house, but with a unique twist: this Greek Revival estate has Mediterranean and Portuguese roots, and it’s these influences, rather than the more typical maritime inspiration, that are at the fore today. The setting, in the heart of the historic district, is perfectly placed just a few blocks from the waterfront, ever so slightly removed from the busiest parts of town, yet never too far from the action. And its 12 rooms are memorable, to say the least, wearing their European inspirations on their sleeves, and packed with boutique-hotel details like rain showers and Le Labo bath products." - Tablet Hotels

An Inside Look at Blue Iris by Life House in Nantucket - Hotels Above Par - Boutique Hotels & Travel

"A recently opened, 12-key boutique hotel housed in a historic Greek Revival townhouse just off Centre Street on Hussey Street in Nantucket, this property blends private, five-star tranquility with easy access to the island’s shopping and dining. The former vacation home of an art collector is styled with Portuguese and Mediterranean influences—think collected artwork, Portuguese pattern play, antique wood details, a custom Murano chandelier in the lobby, tufted blue-and-white bed frames, and nautical antiques—while each single-room and oversized suite feels unique. Bathrooms are stocked with hinoki-scented Le Labo bath products. Public spaces include a tucked-away secret garden patio with a courtyard fountain, custom tiled fireplace, and abundant plush seating, and the hotel offers daily complimentary breakfast (croissants, almond butter toast, parfaits and coffee) plus a daily happy hour. Despite brand affiliations, the intimate, homey atmosphere reads like a bed-and-breakfast; it launched on July 6 and rooms start around $750/night. Within a short walk of Brant Point Lighthouse, Steps Beach and local nightlife, it’s a tranquil, townhome-style option in the heart of Nantucket’s historic district."

We had a fabulous stay at the Blue Iris and can't wait to come back soon! Check in was easy and the room was clean. The hotel is perfectly tucked away on a quiet street but still in walking distance to all the restaurants, bars and shops in town. We also were able to take a stroll down to Jetties Beach from the hotel. We enjoyed working on a puzzle in the lobby lounge before heading to an amazing dinner recommended by the front desk!

This hotel is perfect for the location and the historic ambience. The staff was lovely and very attentive. We enjoyed them. The second room in the suite was not a room and shouldn’t be called that. It was a bit larger than a closet and didn’t have a dresser or mirror. It just had a tiny cot like “bed” meant for a toddler. Ultimately the second adult slept on the pull out couch and used the room for her luggage only. Additionally, the only air conditioner is in the master room which means I had to leave my door open all night and we asked for a fan to blow the air into the living room, where the second adult was sleeping, and it worked a little bit. Luckily, it was cool out, but this would not work in 90° weather. The location is perfect because we could walk to shopping and dinner and they gave us chairs and towels, and we walked to the beach every day. Yes, it’s pricey, but it’s the same price as this type of hotel in Newport, Rhode Island. So if you want the historic feel and close to town, this is what it costs.

We had a wonderful stay at Blue Iris. The rooms were beautifully decorated and had a welcoming, boutique feel. We really enjoyed the complimentary happy hour — a nice touch that made us feel at home. Breakfast was light but satisfying, with options like croissants and overnight oats. The location was also great — convenient and peaceful. The only downsides were noise and the lack of A/C in certain areas. We stayed in Room 1, and unfortunately, we could hear guests in the room above us walking around after 1 a.m., which made it hard to sleep. Also, while our main bedroom was comfortable, the two sitting areas where our children slept did not have A/C and stayed quite warm at night. Overall, we really liked the vibe and style of Blue Iris, and with a few comfort upgrades, it could be perfect.

Very quaint hotel with a historical feel and right in Town. We walked to shops in the morning. They gave us chairs and towels and we walked the 20-25 minutes to the beach every day. We walked to dinner at night. It was a nice to walk, everything was close, and we enjoyed the exercise. Heels are not recommended due to the cobblestone and lots of uneven ground and rocks. The staff was amazing. Breakfast outside was so nice under the canopy. We were sad to leave!!

The location is excellent. The price point is more affordable than many Nantucket options. The décor is cute, and the rooms are spacious and clean. I am a travel advisor and was really thinking I had found a hidden gem for my clients. I loved the room and location so much that I was looking for reasons to be positive about the hotel. Unfortunately, the downsides outweighed those positives. This was the noisiest hotel I’ve ever stayed in. We could hear every step, conversation, door opening & closing, etc. since it is in a renovated old home. On top of that, there were people hosing down the outside of the building daily, making it impossible to walk in or out without getting soaked. The service was the biggest disappointment. The entire time I was there I felt like an inconvenience. The staff came across as consistently rude even when we went out of our way to be polite to try to change the vibe. Everyone has bad days and deserves grace, but this was multiple people over 4 days. The promised free breakfast and cocktail hour didn’t exist during our stay. A receptionist was rarely at the desk during normal hours, leaving guests waiting in the lobby to check in or ask questions. One example- When I requested beach chairs one day after multiple trips back and forth to the lobby with no receptionist present, the receptionist literally sighed, ROLLED HER EYES, and walked off to get them without a word. I have honestly never felt more uncomfortable interacting with hotel staff in my life than during this stay. Blue Iris is classified as a 5-star hotel, and I truly don’t understand how (no restaurant, no gym, no spa, etc). The entrance is up a staircase of about 10 narrow steps with no one to assist with luggage. For such a small, 12-room property, you’d expect warm, attentive service. Instead, I’ve never felt less welcome at a hotel. If budget is the priority and you’re fine with bringing earplugs and lowering expectations on service, Blue Iris does offer a cute, central place to stay. But if you’re looking for rest, hospitality, or the boutique hotel experience, I can’t recommend it.

Disappointing Experience at a Five-Star Hotel – Poor Service Overshadowed the Stay I typically expect a high standard of service when staying at a five-star property, but unfortunately, my experience at this hotel was far from what one would expect at such a level. The most glaring issue throughout the stay was the lack of basic customer service and professionalism from the staff. Upon arrival, we were not greeted—in fact, the staff displayed a noticeably cold and condescending attitude. There were no smiles, no warm welcome—just uncomfortable stares and a dismissive demeanor. This immediately set a negative tone for our stay. One of the most surprising elements was the lack of assistance with luggage, especially given the property’s steep staircases and upscale status. No help was offered, and requests were met with indifference. On another occasion, we were left standing at the front desk for an extended period while a staff member, who appeared to be on a personal phone call, completely ignored our presence. Breakfast, which was included with our stay, was also mishandled. Staff were consistently absent, and we were never served breakfast despite multiple reminders. When we asked to speak with a manager—both before and during our stay—we were repeatedly told that the general manager was either “unreachable” or not on property. This seemed to be a recurring excuse rather than a temporary circumstance. At one point during the day, there were no staff members on-site at all. We actually encountered a team member walking down the street away from the hotel. This lack of consistent staffing raises serious concerns about the hotel’s operations. Similarly, although staff were supposed to be available at the front desk until 11 PM, a sign was placed stating they were “unreachable” at 8 PM—after which no one returned for the remainder of the evening. Ultimately, guests are left to fend for themselves, with virtually no support or service on-site. While I could list additional instances of disorganized or inappropriate staff behavior, I believe the above examples provide sufficient warning for anyone considering this property. For a hotel claiming to be five-star, the experience was deeply disappointing, and I would not recommend this property until serious improvements are made to management, staff training, and overall guest support.

What a perfect location for exploring Nantucket. Very centrally located, lovely room and lobby area. Loved the happy hour on the patio by the fire and light breakfast each morning. Wonderful friendly and helpful staff. Thanks for a wonderful stay!

This place is perfect. The decor is just right for a place like Nantucket. They have many charming touches like lemon water in crystal glasses and you get a whiff of a spicy flowery smell every time you walk in. There was a mixup with our reservation because of Expedia but they more than made up for it. I would stay here again for sure.

Yelp
Wish I could give this more than five stars! We stayed at the Blue Iris for my 30th birthday this past weekend. The hotel is stunning, location is fantastic but what truly sold us on this property was the incredible staff, especially Cristhian! Cristhian's hospitality made our trip one that we will never forget. He always went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed and went out of his way to get us something if the hotel didn't have it. I don't think I've ever had better hospitality - the four seasons has nothing on Cristhian!! There are many beautiful properties on the island but this one takes the cake thanks to Cristhian, Anastasija and staff!!! We will only book with Blue Iris moving forward when we come to the island! Cristhian WE LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!! Thank you for making this trip one we will truly never forget.

Yelp
Not what we expected at all. We have stayed in Nantucket many times and every location was lovely but here We witnessed multiple people change rooms over three days there. We also changed rooms. The first room had part of the window covering falling off amongst other issues. lol the manager said they had someone coming to fix the window covering (a corner) but c'mon. He could have easily double taped it or done anything to make it look decent. After we left it the next girls in that room said there was no dryer only the attachments and came back out again after the plugs breaker was killed several times. Unfortunately the manager left a young female employee with only a single days training alone. We know this because we helped her find the breaker for the this room that we vacated that the new occupants kept blowing the breaker using the steamer and a curling iron at the same time. The employees are lovely but with management like they have they will never stay. The location is the only redeeming factor. Whomever owns this hotel should be there, train and hire someone who makes this connection with the hotel and their guests. The coffee is terrible and so are the bicycles. They aren't kept up. Also the employees sit at a round table by the door like customers with their laptops and iPads which is as bad as a bar owner sitting at the end of a bar like it's his office. The little room to have a complimentary drink is dark and hot and uncomfortable. Not our kind of place for the price. There was a lively African American woman who help after I fell and soooo gracious. The new girl just two days in also lovely. Work harder to keep them and get rid of your manager who clearly doesn't know or care how to run a hotel.

Yelp
We were fortunate to find this little gem in the wonderful city of Nantucket. Staff was very helpful, kind and fun to be around. Our room was clean and quaint and in a perfect location to walk to whatever we needed.
