Where to Go Shopping in NYC | Condé Nast Traveler

"Blue Tree is wonderfully impossible to categorize. Calling it a gift shop would cheapen it, but that's sort of the function it serves for the neighborhood—a place to buy thoughtful, unique presents that you really won't find anywhere else. In front, cases filled with obscure, decadent jewelry line the walls. Toward the back, you'll find everything from whisper-thin cashmere shawls, fig-scented Sicilian soaps, cheeky novelty socks, hourglasses filled with neon sand, luxurious flannel PJs, and notebooks wrapped in marbled paper." - Andrea Whittle

Charming boutique gift shop if you are in the market for high end clothing, jewellery and general novelty items. Expect everything from scented candles and fine crockery to color-changing umbrellas and playful socks. Note there’s no step-free access as it is below street level, so those with a wheelchair or stroller will need to navigate two steps down into the store. If you found my review or photos helpful please leave a quick thumbs up 👍 Thank you

It's a great store, with lots of original finds, I bought myself some things that you can't find in big box stores and even small stores, because the BLUE TREE is one of a kind. Thanks to Mrs. Phoebe Cates Kline, for her store. You have superb employees, friendly, and very attentive to all customers. I was at the BLUE TREE store on Saturday June 1, 2024.

I was here a few years ago. What is being offered is way over priced. Staff were kind of rude and uppity and not sure why considering they are sales clerks.

Read the reviews. Are you someone who doesn't check prices? Who really, really, really, really knows who Phoebe Cates is and wants to see her? If so, i would still skip this retail opportunity. I am from NYC, worked at a similar boutique in NYC and never followed anyone around quite like I was. Yes, Phoebe was there, on the phone, but her sole worker stalked me. My mother was blocks away at the hospital and even if I had the 650.00 to buy the articulated sterling silver clown pendant, I wouldn't have, because I wasn't spoken to with a mere hello or small talk, like people actually SHOULD do to to engage. Is this a small shop or a business? I know what I experienced and I won't be back. And yes, these great boutique items are not so unique and can be found 45% off on Amazon with free shipping.

Great experience at this wonderful boutique! Ivana and Amanda were incredibly helpful and kind. They were patient, understanding, and very pleasant to talk to, and the prices were very reasonable. I can't rave enough about this place and plan on returning whenever in NYC.

In town from Boston to see a play and the MET. Had heard of this store, that Phoebe Cates owned it. Popped in and there she was! She was at the counter when I came in. Said hi. Was absolutely lovely. Had enough nerve to talk to her as I was leaving. She was very sweet and personable. The store is cute and I suspect if I lived on the Upper East Side, I would love it. Cute trinkets. Unique gifts. Definitely check it out!

People are chirping about the expensive prices in the store, comparing them to national online retailers like Amazon and eBay. This store is located Manhattan's prestigious Upper East Side, and likewise the prices would naturally reflect the associated costs with operating a store within such a location, and also considering the proprietor also resides in the area. Use some common sense before entering the store. You're not going to find prices comparable to wherever you're from back home like Iowa, Kentucky, or Florida. Sheesh.

I came to New York on vacation from California to see as much as I could. One must goal was to visit BlueTree. I didn’t get to see Phoebe, but I was lucky enough to see Ivana and Amanda. I bought 2 Chocolate Smiley Face candy things. Do you guys Remember? The front door wouldn’t open to let my daughter and me in and again when we were ready to leave. We had to push the button. It was funny. Amanda had to come to the door to help open it. She said, “we’re still working out the bugs.” I don’t regret not seeing Phoebe, but I do regret not talking to Ivana and Amanda more. You guys are so nice and friendly and I just Froze! I had a lot to talk about, too! I hope I get another chance to get to visit New York. Thank You Guys! Mike9994

Phoebe's dream was "to have it be like a general store but according to me." :) A surprise around every turn, the shop has built up a loyal following not only in the neighborhood of Carnegie Hill but all over the world. Known for its eclectic and inspired selection of women's clothing and jewelry, Blue Tree also carries unique and carefully chosen items in home, gift, fragrance, music, delicacies, etc. There are no rules. Yelp
I was told that I could find my favorite chocolates here at blue tree!( ‿ ) They have so many wonderful things actually! I was delighted to see the variety of adorable socks, very charming stationary and there is unique jewelry here that really caught my eye! (・・) It was the kind of jewelry that would be very suitable for a women's march! ( ‿ ) "Smash the patriarchy " & "Resist" I love it and I look forward to coming back again. So I bought a card and some beautiful chocolates which have beautiful keepsake tins. And they do gift wrap which is a wonderful treat!!

Yelp
I love this gem on the UES. It is a whimsical store and I can always find something when I am looking for a gift. There are so many different items to choose from . The jewelry selection is to die for. The staff is very helpful and fun to work with.

Yelp
Charming boutique with a wide assortment of carefully curated clothes, jewelry, toys, etc.

Yelp
The next time I am in NYC I want to visit Blue Tree. I love the work of both Phoebe Cates and Kevin Kline, I think a lot of these negative reviews are fake ahd Ms. Cates should go to a lawyer and have them investigated and removed if slanderous. I am not even from New York but I know that Madison Avenue is some of the priciest real estate around. People expecting Wal Mart prices at Blue Tree are going to be very, very disappointed. I checked out their offerings online and we don't have cool, unique items like this in Colorado. My mom would look great in most any of the scarves they have there. Great toys for children and just cool, unusual, multi cultural offerings. Phoebe, ignore the people leaving unkind comments. Your boutique looks to be a thing of beauty and I will definetely check it out next time I am in NYC.

Yelp
I ordered a piece of gold jewelry off their internet site and when it came, I needed a magnifying glass to see it. No kidding... it was extremely expensive too.

Yelp
A few days ago I was on the UES and figured it couldn't hurt to stop in and look for a few gifts and I have to say I was so, so impressed! They really have something for everybody, and every piece has such an amazing story. Every worker was incredibly nice and knowledgeable about all the items which made shopping a breeze, I was in and out in 15 minutes which was the perfect shopping length in COVID times. I can't wait to stop in soon and find my next special gift!

Yelp
Lovely store with some great toiletries from Italy. Understood that boutique attitude is somewhat de rigueur in pre-pandemic nyc but in Covid times and this shopping instance I was trying to be a good neighbor and purchase local. A rude staff-person though at checkout - $100 spent for a few small items before closing time on a weekday evening in an empty store the staff person wanted to remind me practically reprimanded me on walk ins not welcome and that appointments for 20 minute shopping slots would be needed going forward. Was this announcement really necessary? It was my first time in the shop and maybe a thank you for your purchase would have been more appropriate. (FYI many of the beauty products sold in Blue Tree can be purchased from Bigelow Pharmacy downtown on sixth avenue where all the staff are professional and cool.)

Yelp
I placed an online order for a hard to find toy. It shipped super quick and arrived in great condition.

Yelp
Customer Service Training Needed. My friend and I visited this store. We found the staff to be extremely rude and nasty. When we asked to see a piece of jewelry, they glared and didn't want to show it to us. The jewelry is very overpriced, as is everything else. The sales ladies' eyes follow you around the store because they think that everyone wants to steal their items -- with the prices the store is charging, it can afford to get cameras. The owner and the staff need to be trained in customer service. We would never recommend this store to anyone.

Yelp
Wow...i love this place. Cute little shop in NYC Blue Door reminded me of the movie "Notting Hill" (Photo attached) Lot's of antique items, unique furniture, toys Every item here were very unique!! Too bad no photos were allowed in the store :P If I visit NYC again, I'll definitely stop by Blue Tree.

Yelp
Love this little shop! A beautifully curated selection of merchandise. A little expensive but you definitely get the sense that you're finding something rare and unlikely to be owned by everyone and their mothers here in the city. The lucite boxes in the front look like (and are priced like) museum pieces and there's a great assortment of candles and decor towards the back. Highly recommend a visit if on the UES.

Yelp
Blue Tree has an amazing selection and is a well curated shop. But the markups are INSANE. I saw a cute children's microphone toy that they marked up by 200%. Yes 200%! They were selling it for 75$ when it's price at Walmart is for like 29$! So now I go there to get gift ideas, and I buy them online (also when they get marked down on sale!)

Yelp
Beautiful jewelry, but seriously overpriced. Gold is a fungible commodity, people. Price your tiny gold earrings accordingly. There's a very good selection of interesting and hard to find candles. I'd like to see Votivo be a featured brand. Minus two stars for the staff who didn't say hello and acted as if I didn't exist. Come on, guys, I know that I look really young, but but be friendly and act as if your parents taught you manners. I actually live in the neighborhood, and I've been coming to this particular store location since it was Penny Whistle Toys in the early 90's. Give me a break. Lose the attitude.

Yelp
Dangerously overpriced items. I found a few things that were rather pretty and wouldn't have minded purchasing but the price tags had me laughing with how ridiculous they were. No thank you. The sales assistants basically ignore you unless you look like you have money to spend. But don't get me wrong, when we actually purchased something, the cashier was very sweet, however, no..I do not think we'll ever be returning. I'm still dying over those prices.

Yelp
This is the kind of boutique where you want--no, need--to buy everything you see. It's just so fun, and smart, and a little weird. But, to be honest, after a while it feels more like a museum of cool stuff than an actual store. For example, the jewelry on the first floor is eclectic and perfect for gift giving. Only after you've spent a half hour perusing it, however, do you realize that there's no way you're going to pay this much for a cute piece, no matter how whimsical. The clothes and shoes upstairs look great, but they're quite limited, both in selection and sizing. Now, I understand that Blue Tree is on Madison Avenue and is owned by actress Phoebe Cates. I mean, we're not going to see back-to-school sales here. She's got her audience figured out, and this is what the market will bear. But, oh, if only a few of those cool tchochkes were more reasonably priced . . . Just when I had decided that this was a place for browsing, not buying, I saw a bin of ring watches ($30 a piece) by the register. Now we're talking! Bought two, one for me and one for my favorite cousin, who was suitably impressed by my brush with celebrity.

Yelp
Where do you go when you're looking for the gift for the person that has EVERYTHING? This was a question that I have been asking myself for years. My mother in-law is just that person. This woman has all the latest and greatest items you can think of. This year for her birthday I wanted to get her something she didn't even know existed. A friend of mine suggested I check out Blue Tree since we work around the corner and she swore that she always has luck there for those hard to get people. WOW, I'm speechless. This store is brilliant. They have everything from clothing to house wears to jewelry and games for the kids. Everything, and I mean everything in this shop is unique. So on my last trip when I was looking for the perfect gift for my MIL's birthday I didn't know what to get her. Not because I didn't have any options but more because there were so many candidate that I just wanted to grab them all and wrap them up for her. I ended up getting her a really beautiful scarf that she absolutely loves. It was a bit pricy but well worth it because it is not your everyday look. So, between you and me, I will never tell my MIL about this shop in fear that she will go here snatch up everything in the store. Where would that leave me??? Giftless, I tell ya!

Yelp
I AM OBSESSED WITH THIS STORE. every time i walk in here i turn into a crazed maniac and am completely unable to control myself. it makes me think things like "I NEED THAT $275 CANDLE!!!!!" and "WHAT WILL I DO WITHOUT THIS CROCHETED BIRD???" it is just the greatest.

Yelp
I've been wanting to go to this store for a very long time. I've heard such great things about it-how they carry one-of-kind items for the household, men, women, children and just random cool stuff. Also, its proprietor is someone I've admired since my tweens. Indeed, it's pricey but not far off from many boutiques in the BillyB or Soho. The added bonus of this place is that you can tell everything is meticulously selected from the staff. Quality of product can justify price for this cost-conscious consumer. The jewelry is absolutely gorgeous! It's very rare for me to walk into a boutique and desire to buy entire collections. *sigh* "If I was a rich girl. . ." I also saw some kick-ass shoes with the perfect sized heel. I get the height I want but know I won't be suffering from sore footsies later. The toy selection is pretty awesome too. I couldn't resist buying my niece these cutsey flash cards. I could max out my credit card here in a sec and not feel guilty. I only wish this place was closer to me but then again. . .I'd be in the poor house if it were because I absolutely want everything in there. This is my new go-to spot for gifts. For me, it's worth the trek from BK.

Yelp
I always enjoy browsing in this store when I am in the neighborhood, as I was today. The owner and staff are courteous and helpful, and while prices are high, the delights are many - a veritable Aladdin's Cave of tempting possibilities. They have a fine selection of John Derian and some really interesting and cool clothing, among many other offerings.

Yelp
Minus 1 star for being crazy expensive!! but a gorgeous store. and I think I wanted everything in it. But my motto is "no sale, no sale" and there was no sale. =( But I did get these cute gloves for my daughter b/c they were "the last pair" and I wanted to get something. $50 for a pair of felt dragon gloves for a kid. found out, they are from france... with the exchange rate, no wonder... argh! found similar gloves on etsy.com $12 and made in USA... lovely jewelry, cute house things, candles, soaps, cute kiddie gifts. gorgeous clothes - blouse (that was cashmere/cotton) oh so lovely and soft. but again, crazy expensive. beautiful dress, skirts. GREAT taste.

Yelp
Beautiful eye candy. While I can't afford anything, I do enjoy browsing - their delicate jewelry (most are over $100. a few even in the thousands), - elegant/cute houseware (little polka-dotted mushroom salt 'n pepper shakers!) - precious toys (they had that alarm clock that rolls off your table when you press snooze) - small selection of men's and women's clothes, shoes, purses upstairs

Yelp
"Blue Tree is an eclectic boutique on the upper east side of Manhattan with an ever changing and always interesting collection of clothing, items for the home, and special gifts." I love this boutique. Much of the things here are expensive, but every once in a while I always seem to find a steal. Where else can you find an indoor skateboard or a pearl bracelet with skull charms? Definitely check it out! It's worth a look.

Yelp
We were passing by this store today and the window display drew us in. It's a small store - although larger than its exterior appearance - and it has an eclectic & interesting selection of items. We saw several items of interest, but we couldn't justify paying such exorbitant prices. Of course, It's located in an obscenely high-rent neighborhood and therefore the prices were no surprise. The sales people working in the back didn't acknowledge us, but the young woman working in the front was pleasant.

Yelp
Love to shop or even just browse in this unique shop. A real asset to the UES as far as great boutiques go. Love so many things here I cannot begin to tell you. The staff are really polite and will help you with your questions. Do not miss this shop it is truly unique and fun!!!

JJ S.

Yelp
They told me they would help me out and not only is everything in here over priced garbage but they said they would watch my car and I got a $115 ticket in the process. DO NOT GO HERE!!! It is a complete and utter scam everything in this store is fake and pure shit
google avatar

G B.

Yelp
this is such a cute store. it is very pricey but there r a few affordable items. i love the blue Q socks because i'm obsessed with that brand. "fuck this shit" on socks? of course i'm buying it! :) i def. wanna go back again :)

Connie D.

Yelp
Beautiful store with many unique items. Expensive but as a lifelong New Yorker I know that is to be expected with it's address. Went in with my sisters, two of us purchased items we both loved. Unfortunately, the staff is just too stoic and pretentious for words. Not one person offered assistance and when we asked they seemed inconvenienced (and there was no one else in the store). My purchase was not so large about $200 but I really thought think that customer service still mattered. It is evident whoever is running the store does not care how customers are treated. Not an issue really, we just will not go back and will not recommend.

Elizabeth M.

Yelp
Love this store.. beautifully decorated and always fun to pop in. Perfect for finding gifts for all ages.

Yelp
Always check out the jewelry here. Especially the earrings. The 5th star was taken off because it was a little overpriced

Anna G.

Yelp
Blue Tree is one of the best shops I have ever been in! The staff is great- really helpful and not pushy at all. I read a few of the reviews that claim that the jewelry is overpriced but I didn't find that at all! And I'm a jewelry designer so I would know. They carry some really special accessories and home items- things I have not seen anywhere else. There are great cool gifts in every price range (I found wonderful porcelain jewelry trays for $25). if you want to splurge on something extraordinary- great for a wedding gift or "big" birthday, the hand carved small lucite boxes are DIVINE! And $300 is worth every penny for a piece of art that required 12 hours of hand carving 3-D images. Magical!

Zoe M.

Yelp
How this store could stay in business all these years is the only question .. It amounts to the weirdest, ugliest junk for extremely high prices collected in one place that you will ever see. I would never insult anyone's taste by giving them a gift from this place. Get real!!!

K M.

Yelp
I don't think my review can do this store justice! It is the most fabulous store in NYC! Everything in it is so beautiful and precious! I wanted to buy everything! This store is a must stop on your visit to NYC to find those special gifts to take home to people and to buy yourself something memorable. Did I mention how friendly and lovely the people were working there? Shopping there was literally one of my most favorite stops in the city!

Patriot D.

Yelp
Just one HUGE problem.....NO Wheel Chair access!!!!!!! Come on ya'll, this is in NY. What gives? Whether you like it or not this is in direct violation of the Americans with disability act. Too bad, this is sad. We miss out on all the good stuff!

Robert M.

Yelp
Got to tell you I walked into the Blue Tree just to hopefully get a glimpse of Phoebe herself. I did! Wow she is beautiful. Anyways, my only purpose was to see her and I almost didn't go into the store once I got there. I felt like a stalker or something. I said hello to her, she was very nice, and just looked around then left. I'm from way upstate NY and we sort of have stores like the Blue Tree but not as expensive. I guess it's all in perspective to where you live. Everything on the upper East side is expensive. It is a very neat little store. I love the layout and the items for sale were unique.
