BLUE & BLACK - Carroll Gardens

Very mediocre experience and haircut with Miranda this Friday. She was very standoffish from the jump; said maybe 10 words to me throughout the entire cut, 5 of them being "So what do you want?" Not crazy for any old haircut, but crazy for a $65 haircut. Also, the cut itself was not at all what I asked for. Came in with medium to long hair and had pretty specific requests about guard size, style, and hair length. She didn't follow any of those requests; I walked out with a copy-and-paste, short-on-the-sides-medium-on-top haircut, which isn't by any means what I asked for. She didn't even do the usual barber routine of showing a certain length of hair and asking, "this look okay?" before cutting the top; just chugged along. My hair is now much too short to fix somewhere else, and I'll have to wait several months to get back to the length I would have wanted. Given how great the other reviews are, I originally decided to chalk it up to her potentially having a really rough day but the longer I sit with this cut, the more frustrated I get. I definitely would not go again, and I certainly would not recommend this place if you have longer hair. At this price point, you may as well go to a salon for a better cut and experience, or get the same cut and experience minus the fancy ambiance at a $30 barbershop.

I’ve been going to Miguel for over a year now and he’s consistently great. His attention to detail is on point, especially when it comes to beard work — easily the best I’ve had. Every cut is clean, sharp, and exactly what I’m looking for. On top of that, he’s a really nice guy and easy to talk to, which makes the whole experience even better. I highly recommend Miguel to anyone looking for a reliable barber who really cares about his craft.

I’ve been coming to Blue and Black since 2016/2017. By far, the best experience and haircut. Staff is terrific. Eva is a master of her craft. Incredible stylist, even better person. Moved from Cobble Hill to NJ - still a loyal customer. Won’t change!

Miguel is my go-to barber, he pays attention to the details and always takes great care every single time.

Beware of their reschedule and cancellation policy. For rescheduling, they charge $65. And if you are late for the appointment, they will charge you another $65 and refuse service. I made a huge mistake trying to get a quick haircut during my busiest week. I guess they don’t offer walk-in service anymore. And don’t give them your credit card information, they will charge you without any notice.

This place is unbelievable. Super welcoming and always a great cut. Troy is the man and truly is the best barber I've ever been to. Unfortunately Troy was unavailable this weekend so I instead went to Persons of Interest as I really needed a cut. HUGE MISTAKE! That place was the antithesis of Blue and Black. I absolutely won't make the mistake of going anywhere else in the area besides Blue and Black again. Truly the best there is and I've lived in the area for 5 years now.

I've been seeing Ryan here for the past year. Always look forward to stopping in where they welcome you with a draft beer. Ryan is super detailed and patient. Always walk out with a great cut. Highly recommended.

As soon as I stepped in I was offered seltzer water and offered a place to hang up my coat. Gordei was very disciplined and tactical in the way he took care of my hair and went the extra mile! Very professional and take his craft very seriously

This is the good barber shop. It's bright, and clean, and modern, and feels like a place where not just the clients, but also the barbers walk out happy too. Blue & Black makes it easy. They let you book online, they can keep your credit card on file, they offer you a nice beverage (alcoholic or non) before your cut, and they have comfortable seats for you to wait in. Best of all, their barbers are excellent. I've had my hair cut by Eva and Bridget thus far, and they both KNOW. THEIR. BIZ. Whatever it is you're looking for, I feel pretty confident that they can make it work. The tough part is if you don't know what you're looking for, but that's really on you (and me). That said, they both did an excellent job at taming my manbun, and now I'm at a place where I like the way my hair looks. They've done nothing about my face, unfortunately.

Gordie is excellent. The best buzzcut I've had in yeeeeears. He was super friendly and provided a meticulous cut. The shop itself has a modern, airy vibe that feels welcoming. They offered a complimentary drink upon entry, which was a nice touch. Will definitely be back next time I'm in town.

Blue & Black is a very cool place to get a high-quality cut. I used to go to a family place whose primary virtue was how fast you could get outta there (It's so wild how some places can spend upwards of an hour for an average men's haircut!), and when I was ready to graduate to a grown-up barbershop, this place fit the bill perfectly. My first haircut here was the cut I got before my wedding - this was the highest stakes haircut in my life, and Olivia really delivered. She did a great job, and I have only gone to her ever since. The perks here are beer while you wait, a luxurious straight razor/hot towel treatment, and an online appointment page (might seem like nothing but this is HUGE for me). But they'd just be window dressing if the cuts weren't worth the price of admission, and I can attest that they are great!

Blue&Black is perfect. Been going here for 4 yrs+ and they always do a great job. Very cool space. They take excellent Covid precautions. Tony has been my go-to stylist lately - he's also the owner - but the others are great too. Friendly, skilled and reliable.

This is my neighborhood barber and I love it. Starts with a beer and always ends with a smile and a great haircut. All of the stylists/barbers are great (have gone to a few different people over the years), but I now consistently schedule my cut with Bridget. She gives me the cut I want every time, consistently checks in to make sure she's getting the length right (and puts up with me when I hedge back and forth about whether it's still too long), and is just an overall outstanding professional and person. I'd recommend booking an appointment over waiting, but it's worth the wait if you have to. Plus, there's that beer I mentioned.

Smokey cut my hair for the first time and I am so impressed with the job she did. I got a mid-fade cleanup and a bit of a trim, a cut that I've gotten many times before, but she took factors into consideration I have never had a barber do before. The angle in which she blended from my sideburns upward framed my face in such a great way. Details like that matter so much and made me feel like I wasn't just another head in a chair. I'll definitely go back to Smokey for my next cut! Thanks :)

I've lived in New York for more than eight years and have tried several barbers, including Persons of Interest on Smith Street. Blue & Black is by far my favorite among all those I've tried. The place is spacious, the staff is friendly and my cuts have been always perfect. I've only seen Bridget twice, but I highly recommend her. She's a great barber and always fun to talk to. Some other fun perks about Blue & Black are that they offer free draft beer or seltzer water, a hot towel after your cut and have a great selection of hair-related products for sale.

This place is awesome! I just moved here from San Francisco about 9 months ago, and I've been desperately searching for a good barber. This is the 6th spot I've checked out in Brooklyn and I won't be going anywhere else moving forward. Before my first visit, I read a review that mentioned that Eva gave them the perfect haircut after glancing at the photo they showed for a few seconds - that is exactly what happened to me! I've visited Eva about 4 times now in the last 3 months and each cut has exceeded my expectations. I really liked that I was able to book an appointment online, and pay with a credit card...oh and they offered me a great IPA upon arrival. Save yourself from getting butchered at the other chop shops in the area and head to Blue & Black. You won't regret it!!!

Everyone was overly nice and a pleasure to be around. However, I believe it's time to change the blade on your straight edge razor. I came in soley based on a recommendation. I wanted to look sharp for a business dinner however, I left bleeding and stinging. Im now left with stubble, razor burn and scratches. Not cool!

I love this place - walk in and get greeted with a Cold Brew, Seltzer or the Other Half IPA. The spot is professional and reasonably priced. Booking appointments online makes life simpler. Bridget is awesome! She's fast but never rushes. Is extremely patient, listens attentively and delivers a superior quality cut or shave!

I, like many others who left reviews before me, used to go to Tony before B&B and followed him when he opened the new shop. The new space is pretty amazing. The ambiance is laid back, modern and comfortable. The quality of work and products available are always top-notch! I really like being able to sample some of the products to get an idea of whether or not they work for me. It's also great because they offer you a beer, sparkling water, or this cool bubbly coffee soda while you're waiting for your appointment. This area of Brooklyn has many cool coffee shops and restaurants as well. I'm definitely a dedicated client and I don't even live in NYC!

Me and my boyfriend both get our haircuts with Bridget. She's not only really good at what she's doing, she makes you feel comfortable and is a great person to chat with! Always excited to get my haircut from her!

Not everyone can cut my hair because it is very fine. Ken did a great job with a straight razor cut. If you are in the neighborhood, go here because they are friendly and chill.

Closing time is listed at 9 p.m. but if one shows up at 8:40 p.m. for a beard trim with no one else waiting in line the lady cutting hair will tell the shop is closed. Maybe the shop should post 8:30 p.m. closing time so people's time is not wasted.

I've been living in NYC for almost 10 years now and this is BY FAR the best place to go for a dope haircut and style. The people there are laid back, cool as hell and give outstanding service (I too make a living in the service sector). Since I first visited Blue & Black, I've been going to see Bridget, who is simply AWESOME. During that first visit specifically, I put my absolute trust in Bridget to cut my hair in a way that fit the form of my face and would leave me feeling confident. Prior to that, I hated going to the barbershop- but now, I freakin' LOVE it. Bridget delivered on that first cut and then some. And ever since, I've never been happier. I now travel over an hour to go and see her (I've since moved out of the Carroll Gardens hood)...and every cut is consistently great. Not to mention, Bridget is one badass kind chick!! If you want the best haircut/style in Brooklyn, run to Blue & Black- and ask for Bridget. I promise you'll be stoked that you did.

Blue & Black is my chosen spot for haircuts and beard trimmings for over 7 months now. Mike is the man to see. His cuts are spot on and he's quick with product advice, too. Absolutely recommend you try this place and ask for Mike when you do. You'll be back for sure. Bonus: seltzer or beer upon arrival!

I have to agree with all the other 5-star reviews here. I've been coming here for a year straight now and have seen Ethan every time. I've tried all the other shops as a native New Yorker - Freeman's (Ruben was always the best), The Blind Barber, Fellow Barber, Cotter, Barbershop and of course Persons of Interest. My stylist at POI was great and went back to her several times, but the customer service wasn't so much and booking an appointment (especially last minute) has always been a hassle. Love that Blue & Black has online booking, great friendly customers service, awesome atmosphere, incredible music (please make a Spotify playlist I can follow!) and consistently great cuts with hot towels and Other Half IPA while you wait. Great products for sale as well, all at a reasonable price. I'd definitely recommend it - you can't go wrong with any of the other staff (my friends all go here to different peeps).

Bridget has been cutting my hair for a few years now, and I can't speak highly enough of the experience! I would be coming to Blue & Black even if I didn't live just a few blocks away - the ambience is great, and above all, the service is fantastic!

I have been getting my haircut by Kyle at Blue & Black for the past year. I've had my haircut at a lot of barber shops around Brooklyn and am happy to have finally found Blue & Black. The shop has great vibes and I'm always offered a coffee, beer, or seltzer while you wait. Everyone in the shop seems legit but I have only had my hair cut by Kyle since he nails it every time even when I change it up a bit. I was recommended to Blue & Black and I would highly recommend it to anyone.

Once I sat in Eva's chair it was over--no other barbershop to go to. From being able to make appointments online, to being treated to a beer or seltzer, to the most important part: a great haircut, this place is the best. Good music to top it off. Highly recommended--already have gotten three of my close friends to switch to B&B!

I was super impressed with not only my haircut but, my entire experience at Blue and Black. From the space to the beer on tap (other half) to the person cutting my hair, everything exceeded my expectations. Eva, was incredibly friendly and bright and most importantly talented. She did everything from trim my crazy eyebrows to rinse my hair after the cut so I could head back to work and not shed into people beers. I really enjoyed the hot towel on my face at the end.. It was a top notch experience. When I headed back to the bar, I got several compliments through out the evening.. I normally hate the process of getting my hair cut. I have to say, i actually enjoyed it this time. Will be back for sure.

This is a great place and well worth every penny you spend. The Customer service is fantastic. The employees are really about giving the customers a great experience. From the waiting room, to the offering of soda or beer, to the professionalism of the barbers. Eli is the best barber I've ever had and does such an amazing job! I came here for a haircut a few months back. While they don't normally cut women's hair it was a great experience. Great vibes, great coffee/beer, very pleasant all around.

I've been here a few times and the place never disappoints. If you're like me and you're constantly searching for a decent place to get your lid sorted out at a reasonable cost look no further. Everyone in the shop is really friendly, good music on loop, decent beer (no light beers) on tap and most of all they take their time. I go to Nick, he's a genuine bloke, he listens to exactly what you want and he doesn't rush the cut, I'm not sure about you but most places in the NY / BK areas rush everything so it's nice to just slow things down and enjoy getting your barnet trimmed.

Eli has been cutting my hair for about two years... maybe a year? I got rid of the less-satisfactory memories of all prior haircuts, so it's just Eli ad infinitum. He's incredibly positive and on-point, even when I come in with the worst helmet hair and bed-head combo. Set your expectations high, and you won't be disappointed. Definitely one of the best designs of a barber shop that I've been to hands-down. The on-tap beer doesn't hurt either, and their selection of products is amazing.

this place is a bro's paradise. you get served beer, get hair cuts, read gq magazines and the monocle as you wait. i was waiting for my husband while he was getting his hair cut and was really impressed with the brofessionalism here.

Mediocre, overpriced, haircuts! Certainly not worth the price! Don't take my word for it, check their Ig! The lack of diversity is blinding! They might as well call the place White on White! Not a single person of color working there! Maybe they're a better apothecary than they are barbers.

I am telling you guys... if you live anywhere near Blue & Black don't even bother trying another Barbershop. This place is super cool and extremely welcoming at the same time. My girlfriend tags along just to hang out and listen to the great music. This is definitely a top tier barbershop. I had been wanting to try the place out even though its a farther walk from my apartment than Person's of Interest and I am glad I did. I was growing my hair out and needed to clean it up. Ken managed to cut as little as possible off while still making it look 10X better. I came back a few months later (too long) as it was starting to look gnarly again. I let Ken take the reigns and he gave me the best cut I've ever had. Ken takes his time and really makes sure to get all the details right. I will definitely be booking another appointment with him soon. One added perk is that for a top notch cut at a premier shop the price is very reasonable. They have a wonderful atmosphere, complimentary drinks, talented barbers, and an impressive lineup of products available. Can't wait to head back here!

While I tend to be a loyalist when I find someone who gives me haircuts I like, I think with Blue & Black my allegiance extends to the shop. LOVE my old barber who worked there and even followed to his new shop. Once. Really didn't like the feeling of the shop and had some very poor customer service from the receptionist. I decided to go back to Blue & Black at that point and booked an appointment with Eva. She was always nice and fun to chat with when I would come in prior to being her client. Plus, everyone that left her chair looked sharp. Well, since then Eva is the only one who has cut my hair. Great cuts that grow out really well which, to me, is the mark of a truly fantastic cut!

Ken has been cutting for the past two years. Constantly upgrading my style, love it here. I'm totally happy when I'm here. This place is more then just a spot for a quick haircut. Super relaxed vibe and great music.

I used to go to Freeman's, then Persons of Interest (when I moved to Carroll Gardens) and now I'm going to Blue & Black. Perhaps it's because they are newer and are just trying harder to break into the market, but the experience at Blue & Black is even better for me than the other hipster barber places mentioned. The space is great, the staff is really attentive and focused... That's actually the reason I gave it a try... Tony had cut my hair at another shop in the past and I thought he always did an incredible job. But if that wasn't enough, the topper is that they have INSANELY GOOD beer on tap that you can enjoy while you're waiting or after you get your cut. When Persons of Interest started offering free bottles of Brooklyn beers, it seemed like a stroke of genius. But offering a truly delicious craft beer on tap and poured in an ice-cold metal cup takes the idea to the next logical step. So... Come for the beer and stay for the excellent cuts.

Chris gave me a wonderful hair cut! I have been traumatized by other haircuts before so I was a little hesitant but she listened to what I asked for and did exactly that. Definitely the best haircut I've received! Highly recommend.

Been here a couple times now. The first time had a pretty good cut from Eva. Went back and tried the new girl. It was a pleasant experience and everything looked OK at the shop but when I got home and combed through my hair it was uneven and choppy in places. Enough so that my wife made a comment. Still like the shop and would go back but will request Eva or try out one of the guys.

Firstly, this space is beautiful. This barbershop has an excellent atmosphere staffed with people who provide a first class experience. Reception to barbers, Blue & Black knows how to make you feel comfortable and provide you with some serious style. I've had my haircut with Eli a few times and I would highly recommend him. He's a laid back dude who knows how to create whatever it is that you're looking for. He's a good listener and masterfully translates your words into the perfect cut. Blue & Black is a really remarkable barbershop that is able to set itself apart from other similar shops in Brooklyn. The staff, the cuts, and the experience is a truly special one and really worth a visit. Also, the beer they have on tap is free. AND it's delicious. Seriously, It's like really, really, good.

This is the best barbershop in Brooklyn. Every time I've gotten a cut or a trim of my full face beard, I walk away very happy. It's so tough to find barbers who know how to make beards look great, and this place is a hidden gem. Put these skilled professionals in a beautiful clean shop that serves up soft drinks and draft beer for customers while you wait and I think you can't argue that you have the perfect barber shop.
