Bluff Hill Lookout (also known by its Māori name, Mataruahou) is one of Napier's most popular vantage points. Located about 102 meters above sea level, it offers panoramic views of the Port of Napier, Hawke Bay, and on clear days, as far as the Mahia Peninsula to the north and Cape Kidnappers to the south.
From the edge of the cliff, you can look directly down onto the Port of Napier. It's a great spot to watch massive container ships and cruise liners, which look like toy boats from that height.
The lookout is built over the remains of a World War II coastal defense gun emplacement. You can still see some of the concrete foundations where the 6-inch guns were once stationed to defend the city.
Because of its 360-degree potential and clear view of the ocean, it’s a favorite for photographers during the golden hour."
If you prefer to walk, you can take the trail through Sturm’s Gully (Karetoki Whare). It’s a steep climb but takes you through lush native bush and gardens. Limited free parking is available at top.
