15 Best Bars in Portland, Maine | Condé Nast Traveler

"Blyth & Burrows, a beautifully renovated Old Port cocktail spot, actually boasts three bars: two in the main entrance and a separate speakeasy downstairs. It’s tight quarters, but the ambience is warm and inviting. One of the most well-thought-out cocktail lists in the city is divided into four categories: The Americas (with American, Mexican and Caribbean bases), Old World (with European bases), Silk Road (with Asian or Middle Eastern flavors), and Navy Strength (big and boozy). Drinks are tirelessly honed to perfection before they make it on the menu." - Joe Ricchio

Google
Visiting from out of town and luckily stumbled upon Blyth & Burrows. Every cocktail bar claims to have “unique cocktails”. This place truly delivers. I loved EVERYTHING about this place. The ambiance is great. The music was fun. The cocktails were fresh, unique, and incredible. Our bartender, Anna, truly was a queen of her craft. She had great recommendations and we watched her make perfect cocktails with care and precision. Honestly, for a long time this is going to be what I refer to as “the best bar ever”. You need to get an oyster shot - because, when in Rome. Then we had a couple drinks from their menu that imitates beers, a Big in Japan, and I had a S.B.N.T.S.. I would 100% recommend all of it. Just go ok?

Google
Blyth & Burrows is hands down one of the best spots in Portland for oysters and cocktails! Their $1 oyster night every Wednesday is such a steal — always super fresh and perfectly shucked. The vibe here is classy but still laid-back, with some of the best cocktails you’ll find in the city. If you’re into oysters, good drinks, and a cozy Portland atmosphere, this place is an absolute must. Always a great time here!

Google
This place was fantastic. We popped into the Speakeasy part for a drink while waiting for a table in the main bar and needed up getting eating in a cozy private area in the back which was perfect for our large group. There’s hidden doors everywhere, an upscale pirate theme and great ambiance! We shared several food items and loved every thing- even had to order a second order of lobster rolls. Emma was our server and she was just a peach! She was attentive but not overbearing, helpful, and handled our large group perfectly. Definitely recommend this place!

Google
Had an amazing snack and a couple drinks. Loved the atmosphere. They have a great cocktail program and the grilled oysters were to die for. Highly recommend stopping in if you are ever in the area.

Google
Wonderful spot for cocktails! The food was amazing and the drinks were high quality! The service and atmosphere were wonderful. It does get pretty crowded if you have a larger party there may we a wait.

Kush P.

Google
The drinks are unreal. They taste exactly like they say which is surprising because some of them are savory dishes and it resemblance in uncanny without feeling like you're eating a meal.

Alex K.

Google
Had some fantastic cocktails here. Lots of really unique and interesting options. Seems like Wednesday is the day to go - they have a special punch and some great deals on the raw bar. We walked in and got a seat around 4:45 but it definitely seemed like there was a good wait later on.

Google
Very nice restaurant which has a great cocktail menu. Egg white whiskey sours were perfect. The deviled eggs we're right on the mark, the lobster roll was just okay. Oysters spot on, recommend!

Yelp
Came here for a drink with my brothers the other night. We came out on a Thursday. The rest of the street was DEAD but this place was PACKED. The vibes were great, good music and our server was very attentive, despite how many people were in the bar. We got a couple drinks - Big in Japan, S.B.N.T.S., and a mango mocktail. The Big in Japan was nice but I'm not a huge fan of coconut water so I ended up letting my brother finish it. I really enjoyed the S.B.N.T.S. though and thought it was really cool that they served their own bottled cocktail. I would definitely recommend this place if you're in town and looking for a fun spot to grab a drink!

Yelp
Blyth & Burrows is a perfect little cocktail bar in the middle of one of the best shopping streets in Old Town. We were lucky to walk in for some pre-dinner cocktails on a Saturday night and snag two seats at the top level bar. There's also outdoor seating on the street and even a little speakeasy hidden in the back, but with how popular this place is, I got the vibe it's always packed. Speaking of vibes: the atmosphere here is top notch. It's dark, cozy, romantic, and really well curated. Sitting at the bar turned out to be a great move so we could take advantage of all the great recommendations from the bartenders. We started out with some oysters (all perfect) and a round of cocktails. There's all kinds of flavor profiles to choose from, but we wanted to branch out a bit at a place like this so I went with the Ranch Marauder -- which is their take on a Ranch Water, but in a very literal and very refreshing way. It was all about the fresh herbal flavors, they even call it a "Voyage to Hidden Valley". My husband went with their Tom Yum Punch (yep, you read that right) which is a milk clarified gin cocktail that literally tastes like a bowl of Tom Yum soup in the best way possible. It paired perfectly with the oysters, but it's pretty impossible to describe. You just have to visit and try for yourself. If I was a Portland local, I'd be a regular for sure. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Great atmosphere for an evening beverage. Excellent selection of whiskey, scotch, bourbon and more. Both US and international choices. Jack was working the upper bar, very knowledgeable and talented mixologist. You'll be pleasantly surprised by the unique & classic nautical bar. I had the pretzel bites along with an old fashioned. Would have stayed longer but it was getting late for me on a work night. Stop in and you will enjoy this local establishment.

Yelp
If there's one thing and one place you need to go for cocktails in Maine it is here for their tom yum cocktail. I'm still thinking about that cocktail weeks later. It tastes so clean, so perfectly balanced. I never knew tom yum could be a cocktail but it is perfection. The vibe is amazing as well. Must visit!

Yelp
love blyth & burrows! great appetizers and always a rotating drink menu which i appreciate! sometimes easy, sometimes difficult to get in here. finding the speakeasy is always fun!

Yelp
This place was packed on Friday evening but we managed to get a seat outside at one of the bourbon barrels. I ordered the SBNTS (a carbonated tequila drink) and my partner ordered the Ship Captain Crew (a dandelion bourbon and rhum drink). Both drinks had fantastic flavors and lovely presentations. We heard a waitress mention the speakeasy located in the back. Look for the red light, open the door and there's another bar! It was pretty neat.

Yelp
If I could have a perfect pre-dinner drink spot, this would be a top contender. The vibe is casual but dimly lit in the flirty way you want it to be. The drinks are a little out of my depth but in a way that makes me respect them even more. Every flavor balances each other out perfectly. I ordered an espresso martini and it had a hint of nuttiness to it. The pretzel bites and their complimentary sauces were amazing as well. Normally I'm always a beer cheese over mustard sauce girl, but this maple mustard gave the beer cheese a run for its money. I could go on forever but its a great spot, the staff were kind, and I'd go back.

Yelp
What a cute bar this is. The atmosphere/ambiance is dimly lit and cozy/romantic type. There is outdoor seating as well. We were outdoors then it started to rain so we were able to get a table in the back of the bar. There was a small bar in the back and a bar in front. Cool place to come for drinks with friends. I had a gin and tonic and they sadly were out of my favorite type of gin but they had my second favorite. I would come back here and hopefully the service is not as slow as it was when we were outside.

Yelp
Such a cozy place. It smelled of smoked pecan wood and in the drizzly cold outside, it was so inviting My martini was perfect-sharp, ice cold with briny olives that had a spice to them. Everyone was so nice-from the hostess to the server, a sweet young woman with a long dark braid. I'm describing her because I didn't get her name but wanted to give her a shout-out for giving us such good service. The charred oysters were ridiculous, smokey sweet and spicy. We had warm cookies with some type of milk jam that I can only say made it the best dessert I've had in a long time. Highly recommend.

Morgan C.

Yelp
I wish we weren't visiting because this would be my regular spot! It's small inside but the place is beautiful. Our waitress was helpful in helping us decide on what drinks to get. And we got the clam dip which was really good, flavorful! A must if you're visiting Portland!

Yelp
Atmosphere is fantastic. Beautiful bar area and decor. No reservations- but arriving right at opening 4pm worked well. The cocktails were amazing. Tried some light bites- also good but somewhat overpriced in my opinion (crab legs ok, but nothing exceptional). Very nice service.
google avatar

William C.

Yelp
The best happy hour for oysters on Wednesdays in the entire state of Maine! Fresh and continual... also crab claws and shrimp... and a specialty punch that makes every down go down tasty! They're friendly... like the oysters!... late spring through early autumn get there when they open (4pm)... or you may not get a seat!!

Yelp
Beautiful thoughtful cocktails that are delicious. Also good snacks. Great place for a date or weekend fun.

Yelp
Great little speak easy vibes! Sat at the bar at the perfectly timing because it got very busy around lunch time. Food was great and drinks were also so yummy! The bartender was personable and able to give good recommendations for Portland spots

Yelp
Be ready to get cozy here. Close quarters between the bar seats and the people sitting in the window but it was fine by me because Portland had some of the coolest nicest people I have ever met. I came in here on a Friday night, solo, and took a seat in the corner of the bar. I loved the music, the moody lighting, everything about this place was just very cool. I ordered shrimp cocktail and it was delish. I was sent here by a bartender at another restaurant who told me they had great mocktails but I didn't see a list when I sat down. The bartender asked what I wanted to drink so instead of being boring and asking for a water I asked if he would make me something without alcohol. He asked if I had any allergies, which I appreciated. Out came this fancy, beautiful, unbelievably delicious mocktail, I was so pumped. This bartender was so nice, sometimes it can be annoying having someone sit and not drink but he didn't make me feel that way at all. I was in and out of this joint in 40 minutes or so, highly recommend.

Yelp
Such a nice interior with creative drinks! Got the basil and japan drinks and they were SO unique and SO good?? Don't even know how they made them clarified but sure- ill take it. Food looked good too but we didn't get any since we were stuffed. Like this place a lot. Pricey? Yes. But i would say worth it if you value a unique bev

Yelp
We had cocktails here before dinner. Getting seated was a bit confusing and the hostess wasn't very inviting. We sat in front of a wall as you walk in to the right - not the best, but it was a seat. The waitress was very nice. Our drinks came out quick. The presentation was very cool and taste was delicious. We had a little bit of a challenge getting our waitresses attention for the bill so a very nice place if you want to have a drink and just be left alone. 3.5/5

Yelp
I had read up about Blyth & Burrows while making plans for my most recent trip to Portland - I'm a fan of cocktail bars and it looked like a cool spot. Our hotel was just down the block from here, and since we had some time before our dinner reservation we decided to stop in and check it out. Located in the thick of Old Port on Exchange Street, B&B serves up craft cocktails and food in an almost nautical-themed setting. The interior isn't large - the bar is front and center with additional seating in the back and COVID-style outdoor seating; we were given our choice of where to sit and decided on the bar. The nautical theme was apparent in the decor, but it wasn't too in-your-face which I appreciated. While cocktails are the star, they do have wine, beer, spirits, and a decent selection of food. We decided to start with a round and also order the onion dip to snack on. The cocktails are categorized by type/how they're prepared (clarified, carbonated, stirred, etc.). I got the Shore Leave which had citrus and coconut notes - it was really refreshing and not overly sweet. We got another round and I went with the Ship Captain Crew - this was really good too - refreshing and smooth. The onion dip was good, it tasted homemade and came with a good amount of chips. Service was great - we were taken care of by the bartender who consistently made sure we were taken care of. Overall, Blyth & Burrows is a total yes - great cocktails, the vibes were on, and it was the perfect reprieve after a long day. I would definitely return the next time I'm in Portland.

Yelp
The Wednesday $1oysters are really good and fresh. As is the $1.50ea jumbo shrimp cocktail. The pretzel with dip is good. They have a daily drink special which i have gotten a few times and they are always refreshing and really good. The speakeasy downstairs in the backroom is very cool. I come here every time I'm in Portland, there is usually a line to get in but it goes fast.
google avatar

Yelp
Had a good experience here and ordered a couple of cocktails. Hubby ordered the ship captain crew, which is basically a smoked old fashioned but it was too smoky for his liking. He said it overpowered the drink and masked the other flavors. His second drink was the mutiny on the bounty and we both liked it a lot better. It was well balanced but boozy. I ordered the big in Japan and it was a vodka based drink that was cucumber forward. Cute place to grab a drink. Come check them out!

Yelp
Gorgeous bar and gorgeous cocktails! It is maritime themed and was very busy on a Saturday evening. We were in Portland for vacation and stopped by in the downtown area given all of the bustle. It had clean bathrooms and a very nice woodsy dark ambience. The drinks were very creative and beautifully presented. The service was also very friendly and quick. This is a cool spot if you're visiting the area and worth a stopover.
google avatar

Jeremy D.

Yelp
Came here over Xmas vacation in 2024 and the "hidden bar" was so cool! Food and drinks were all excellent and so was the vibe. We went to stop in last Wednesday and while FOH was open, sadly the hidden bar was closed. Can't wait to go back and hopefully it's open the next time we stop!

Kate R.

Yelp
The cocktails were very well done. The food was outstanding! I Look forward to dining there again!

Yelp
So we visited Portland Friday night we hit Blythe & Burrows...Taylor our server/bartender was AMAZING!! We had deviled eggs, oysters and puthipier! We started with Sloops (AWESOME)...we loved it so much we made our way back Saturday night..hostess screwed us over twice.. finally we set at the downstairs bar Chad was great, but we left feeling like ehhhh because the entrance was so yukkkk..but overall I'd still tell a friend to give it a try!! Enter Sunday night..sat outside on their "patio" our server was less than interested in helping us! We got one drink and asked for our check she was busy with one single guy on their patio so overall I rated a 3...went from a 5 to a 3 to a 1...averaged it!!

Yelp
Great food and a wonderful atmosphere. Two tiered layout for this cozy place. I sat at the bar and got exceptionally good service. Having never been there before, I asked the bartender for some suggestions, and he did not disappoint.. It's a descriptive menu, so you can read and then follow your gut and I bet you won't be disappointed. The prices are fair. I think it's a wonderful place to take a date or four people. To me, it seems a little tight to have a large group of people. When you're walking up, you need to pay attention because you can miss it.

Yelp
Enjoying a few top-notch cocktails at Blythe & Burrow was the perfect way to end an evening out on the town. Every single one I tried or witnessed was both complex and delightful. Each brought something unique in flavor and presentation.
google avatar

Jae S.

Yelp
We came here for some cocktails and the cocktails were great. They had a limited cocktail menu but plenty of spirits on hand if you wanted to deviate from their menu. Service was fast and friendly. I recommend for a round of cocktails if you're in the area. They have indoor and outdoor seating as well as food.
google avatar

Katherine C.

Yelp
This is one of the best cocktail bars I have ever been to including all the major cities. I have tried clarified cocktails before but Blythe and Burrows has several clarified cocktails which are excellent. I believe my boyfriend and I collectively tried most of the clarified and shaken drinks (none of the carbonated or stirred). The standouts were the Shore Leave which is a clarified cocktail with a nice tropical rum and coconut flavor and the Long Boat Key which was another tropical cocktail but it was shaken. All the ones we had were excellent and I also enjoyed the Tom Yum Punch which is a good recommendation for people who like a savory/spicy cocktail with no fruity notes. The place is very small with some patio seats outside and seating inside. The service was quick and the servers seemed to be knowledgeable about the drinks which is a plus, since the drinks are more complex than a standard restaurant. I went maybe around 5 or 6 so it was still bright outside but I'm sure the atmosphere becomes even better later at night. I probably won't be back in Portland soon but highly recommend this spot for a specialty cocktail.

Yelp
Not for gin drinkers (imo). My husband loved this place as a bourbon drinker. I tried 2 gin based drinks and 1 vodka based drink and did not enjoy any of them. All of the flavor profiles were very savory, even spicy, and the descriptions were deceiving. I much prefer citrus and herbal forward drinks that complement the flavor of gin. The majority of the cocktails are clarified so there are no substitutions. While the cocktails are very inventive, not super approachable (imo) if you do not have a more savory palate for cocktails. This place also gets super busy, both the front and the speak easy in the back so it can feel a bit overcrowded and loud.

James S.

Yelp
Bartender and service is great! Drinks are top notch and would definitely recommend for a few drinks
google avatar

Allie H.

Yelp
This review is for the oyster shots! While visiting we were super intrigued by the idea of an oyster shot. Stopped in to try and they were so good! Tried the gin based one and it was super unique and fun
google avatar

Blanche K.

Yelp
Wednesday dollar oyster specials is a hit!!! Unfortunately no reservations, but we didn't wait long as a party of 5 at all. The oysters were so fresh and sweet. We also enjoyed our drinks and snacks. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Eager to come back and visit the speakeasy experience on the weekends
google avatar

Brittany P.

Yelp
hollllly shit. super happy to walk by on a wednesday for the wonderful specials !! the shrimp were so fresh! huge. delicious. amazing ! i had never had the type of crab claw before - i was a bit weirded out by the texture then i got in there and it was great ! the sauces were all fantastic. great service. beautiful space ! the basement is my dream living room.

Yelp
We were looking for a nice little place to have a libation and we were glad we passed up a couple places. This place hit the mark! Cheerful, unpretentious, beautiful aesthetic, great drinks and great service. What more would you want?! If we lived here we'd be regulars.

Yelp
Stopped by at 10PM on a Friday and the place had a solid amount of people in it, but luckily me and my boyfriend were able to sit at the bar. It's a bit too loud for me, but that's my personal preference. Long Boat Key: really solid drink. Tropical, but a bit too sweet for my taste. I like to taste the liquor in my drinks so if you lean towards preferring not to taste the alcohol at all, then this drink is for you. Tom Yum Punch: I love Tom yum punch, but could not ever imagine it being incorporated into a drink. I really wasn't expecting to like this drink, but this ended up being my favorite drink of the night. A little tart, but it works. 5 Second Frenchie: I was recommended this drink when asking the bartender between Big in Japan or Seabeast takes a Lover. I went with the recommendation, and immediately regretted it. I honestly think that drink was recommended because the bartender didn't feel like making a drink, and this was a pre-bottled drink. Kinda soured the whole experience for me since this was my last drink of the night and I wasn't a fan. Overall, really nice place if you're looking for fun cocktails, but definitely recommend anyone going here to note that the drinks are on the sweeter side.
google avatar

Nicki M.

Yelp
I tried to get into the main bar and it was full but instead was redirected to their speakeasy which was down a graffiti alley and in a back alley doorway lit by a red light- so fun! It was quite small but delivered delicious drinks! Service was impeccable!
google avatar

Peter D.

Yelp
Still my favorite bar in Portland! Great place with quiet nooks, a fun bar, great bar tenders and servers (all from Central Casting!), and amazing constantly changing cocktails and delicious, creative small plates! Oh my god, the deviled egg is incredible. The decor is fun. It's steampunk-maritime in the best way.
google avatar

Jane G.

Yelp
An upscale cocktail bar and speakeasy, Blyth and Burrows' strength lies in its inventive cocktails and old-timey feel. The "Big in Japan" (which has notes of citrus) cocktail was excellent. A friend and I tried the $1 oysters (which they do every Wednesday), and while I can't say I'll ever enjoy oysters, it was a great deal. They have three bars in total, all of which are lowly lit, giving off a cozy and inviting (yet elegant) feel. Located on Exchange, Blyth and Burrows is a can't-miss for tourists and cocktail-obsessed locals!
google avatar

Terra G.

Yelp
We enjoyed Blyth & Burrows. They have a very fun maritime / pirate theme, and very unique drinks. We had their version of an espresso martini which was very good.
google avatar

Rachael P.

Yelp
This bar / speakeasy was amazing to start off a Saturday night. I went here with my coworkers for cocktails, and the drinks were perfect! Great ambiance, wait staff was nice, and overall great experience. Once the music started to get loud around ~10PM ish, we went elsewhere.
google avatar

Rachel O.

Yelp
Some friends of ours brought us to Blyth & Burrows years ago, so we returned on our own this past weekend. It really is a wonderful place - With secret little nooks, thoughtful details, kind & knowledgeable (albeit young) staff, & of course, complex cocktails that border on absurdity (my favorite!) Actually, I think they've firmly crossed the line into total absurdity, but that's what makes it so fun. We tried: - Tom Yum Punch (Gin, lime, tom yup soup, clarified with milk) - Big in Japan (vodka, shochu, cucumber, umbeboshi, fino, lemon, clarified with coconut) - Seabeast Takes a Lover (Jamaican rum, curacao, orgeat, angostura, lime, clarified with milk) - Spinacher (Gin, spinach, salers, ginger, fenugreek, cashew, & lemon) No notes on the cocktails. The blend of flavors & the presentation (choice of glassware, types of cubes/ice, garnishes) were astoundingly good. I was particularly blown away by the tom yum soup in the punch & the cashew in the Spinacher. Although these were unique flavors for a cocktail & definitely recognizable, they didn't overtake their respective drinks. Just a funky flare/highlight. My one note for the Blyth & Burrows team - The music isn't quite right. I struggled to hear my partner over the level of sound. Also, the choice of genre, in my humble opinion, doesn't quite fit the speakeasy theme. With love, maybe take it down a notch. Both in dB & in vibes.

Yelp
We have been here multiple times and it was finally time to make a review. Every experience here has been great. Service is always good and the vibe is upscale but overwhelmingly in any way. It's usually pretty busy but if the main area is full there's the speakeasy out back which offers relatively the same menu and shares the same experience. We have had multiple items from the menu and none have ever disappointed. This time for drinks we got the margarita and the ship captain crew. The marg is one of the best we've had in the area hands down. And the ship captain crew might just be my number one favorite drink to have in Portland. It comes with a bottle with the bourbon and hickory smoke inside which you pour over your iced up glass. Highly recommend! For food we got the crab claws and the sausage roll. Sausage roll is okay and it comes with a plentiful amount of mustard. The crab claws are great and a good size. The seaweed salad it is presented with is amazing. Make sure to check this highly looked up to cocktail bar in Portland. You will have a great experience and leave very satisfied.
google avatar

Evelyn W.

Yelp
This time I tried going through to the speakeasy side instead of the main building and it was a cute experience. The bartenders were very attentive because it seats few, and my drink was great. Highly recommend ordering the Long Boat Key!
google avatar

Kenzie K.

Yelp
Went for Wednesday happy hour. Friend got a bunch of $1 oysters, I got $1.50 shrimp and $2 Jonah crab claws. Fresh and tasty, cocktail sauce is tangy, great pair.
google avatar

Dan D.

Yelp
Amazing cocktail bar in Old Port! You can get any drink off the menu and you will not be disappointed but you can also work with the bartender to get the best drink for you. Highly recommend the "Enterprise" old fashion. I sat at the bar with my girlfriend and we had a great convo with our bartender as he made high end cocktails. The atmosphere is fun and cozy. Highly highly recommend going for at least one drink...worth the price.
google avatar

Holly K.

Yelp
Great cocktail bar in Portland!! Sat at the outside patio with my pup, which was nice because it's a deck smack dab in the middle of the road (the road is closed to cars on Sunday) You feel like you're intertwined in all of the action going on outside. Service was very friendly, was able to make any drinks we requested, seemed knowledgeable, and offered great suggestions off the menu (according to our preferences). It started to rain at one point, and the waitress even brought us a large umbrella from inside the restaurant. Drinks themselves were well-made and tasty. The bartender made me a pisco sour (not on the menu), and the Ship Captain Crew (smoked whiskey drink). Thought both drinks were delicious (the menu ones are creative) and I would return here!

Yelp
One of the nicest cocktail bars in Portland, hands down. I've only been once before, but this time got to sit in the back area at a table, which was a lot more dim and romantic setting than I imagined. I came with a friend after watching a film at the Nick, and we both hadn't eaten dinner and just wanted some snacks while we caught up. We ordered the Herbed Goat Cheese & Honey and the Lamb Skewers. I have never seen crostini this thin and dark before, but it was amazing with the mountain goat cheese that had honey pooling at the bottom. The server was super accommodating for my nut allergy as well, and served the pecans on the side. But fr, I could eat that goat cheese with crostini ALL DAY. The lamb skewers were so soft and well-seasoned with two sauces, one resembling tzatziki. At first, I thought there were tomatoes on the bottom of the dish and took a bite to be delighted with candied orange peels. So impressed with the select food menu at Blyth (gorgeous presentation as well)! Oh, and the playlist was absolutely fire.

Yelp
Love Love LOVE this spot! Its always a go to whenever we are in Portland! Last time we were here was pre baby back in 2021 and we came back today with our 1.5 year old. The oysters were as good as I remembered! And the drinks never disappoint. And if that wasnt enough the bartender specially made me a discontinued drink! And it was as good as I remembered!

Yelp
This place was supposed to be open until 11:00pm but the kitchen closes (Sunday night's only) at 8:00pm. We arrived right at 8:00pm and neither the hostess nor our waitress bothered to tell us that they had just closed the kitchen with three hours left until closing. So we ordered cocktails which were fine and then the waitress didn't check on us for 45 minutes when we tried to order food and discovered the kitchen closed literally as we were being seated. So at 9:00pm we had to try and find a kitchen open that had availability. It was our anniversary. So the whole experience kinda sucked.
