On the Grid : Bob's Java Hut

"Park your motorcycle right outside and come on in. Bob's has been around since the 90's and maintains a simple, retro biker vibe, where you can get a good cup of coffee and a view of busy Lyndale Avenue in all of it's glory. We were driving by after a meal and decided to stop in for some mid-afternoon energy. Unfortunately, we didn't enjoy either of the drinks we got--the Cold Press and Berry Mocha. They both smelled like waste food bins and tasted off. Upon examining their equipment we determined that everything was filthy. Maybe I should've gotten my usual cortado, but I don't think I could ever go back. Kind of bummed cause the staff was really gracious.

Google
Told my dad I got an oil change. He's so proud. 😉 All Joel's aside, the oil change is fantastic & my go to. Hot or iced! It's pretty loud for a cafe, in my opinion, but I acknowledge I am pretty noise-sensitive. I like the aesthetic & enjoy the different options.

Google
Had great drinks here and even got a jump start from an employee in a time of dire need. Will forever recommend this place. The ambiance and location is also phenomenal. 1 million stars

Google
More of a BEATNIK joint than a coffee house.. I wasn’t impressed with the vibe…Kinda dismal. You walk in and it’s kinda like….are you sure. . ? Coffee was aight..Tasted like coffee. I got “the crankshaft” and couldn’t really taste the flavoring…Nothing too special, but the service was excellent & cheerful. Drinkable, but not fantastic. Is a “Java hut” for sure

Google
A lovely little coffee shop along Lyndale Avenue that is a common stop for me (albeit I haven't been there as frequently since HUGE Theater across the street closed down), but I include Bob's as one of my favorite coffee spots in the Twin Cities! I highly recommend the Carburetor. Definitely in the top 5 cold brew/press coffees I've had.

Google
This might be the best coffee shop I’ve found in Minneapolis. Latte is delicious, and the barista was kind and helpful. You can tell they put a lot of thought in their menu with unique flavors, using good quality syrups - including a homemade Carmel sauce - and local milk. Will definitely be back.

Google
I love this place! Not only is the coffee delicious the atmosphere is warm and inviting. The baristas are wonderful especially Andy, he was welcoming knowledgable and reccomended the delicious Meil. I am a huge supporter of small businesses especially coffee shops and I will continue to give Bob's Java Hut all my love and support.

I love the vibe at Bob's. One of my favorite local spots on a warm day when they open the front window area!

Yelp
After visiting the Tulip House, we were looking for a new coffee place to try. Bobs did not disappoint. They have a lot of unique offerings beyond just your normal coffee/espresso. I ordered a dark chocolate iced mocha, but I think I got a Mexican chocolate mocha. I was trying to decide between the two, so just went with it and it was delicious. In the bakery case, we noticed a cookie that looked too good to pass up. It was a peanut butter cup cookie. It was amazing. Besides the mix up in drink, the only other negative is the parking is horrible with only on-street parking. There might have been an event going on across the street that contributed to it though. I would recommend parking off of Lyndale a few blocks and enjoy the walk vs trolling for parking.

Yelp
LOVE their coffee. They make their own syrups with real natural ingredient, not the Tofrani with fake colors and flavors. My recent favorite is the raspberry. Added to the iced latter the flavoring adds a very subtle nuance of sweetness, letting the coffee stay a forward flavor. I was in at end of day recently and was hit with the fresh scent of cardamom. She told me it was the Chai spice she was grinding up for the house made Chai. Yummmm

Yelp
Super cute coffee shop! The garage door wasn't open when I went but I overheard someone talking about how nice it is to sit by the garage when they open it. I had an iced vanilla latte and it was delicious!
google avatar

Yelp
This is my regular go-to coffee spot and normally I love it....however, today when I went not only was the service bad but my drink (which I always order Carmel white mocha with oat milk) was TERRIBLE and at almost $7 a cup I'm not happy at all I don't know who the new guy is but maybe give him MORE training on making the drinks and in customer service!!
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent service, order was exactly as we wanted. Sat outside, clean and plenty of room. Coffees were awesome, we had to order a cook, it was as delicious as it looked. Great selection.

Yelp
I'm a biiiiiig fan of Bob's!! As an uptown resident, Bob's is my go-to coffee shop. The vibe is very chill inside, there's always people working or meeting friends for coffee. Sometimes people bring their dogs in too! Bob's is my favorite place to bring a book to enjoy with my coffee and a pastry, which are both very delicious of course! Definitely check out Bob's if your looking for a comfy local coffee shop!

Yelp
Haven't been there in a while but I'm so glad to see they are still there. Great coffee, service(quick and efficient) and the atmosphere is THE best I've ever experienced in a coffee house. The staff is friendly and so are the customers. Outside seating is great. I love that there are spaces, on the street, reserved for motorcycles. Prices, for a coffee house of this caliber, are inexpensive. I used to live in the neighborhood and Bob's became my go to. Thank you.

Yelp
I tried Bob's recently when I decided I didn't feel like walking to one of my other local favs, and I'm so glad I did. I got the berry mocha, iced, which was a strawberry mocha that day. Delicious! It was refreshing, tasted great, and the coffee itself was so good. It is also such a cute shop! The window was open so that you could enjoy the breeze and views. I could totally see myself working from here someday!

Yelp
The vibes of this coffee shop are great. The outside of the building is very misleading. My first impression of the place was that it was going to be a dinky little coffee shop with some diner food, but I was wrong! It was very trendy on the inside with a very clear "trendy city" atmosphere. There is a large space with plenty of spaces to sit. I got a hot black coffee with sweetened condensed milk, and it was great. I have never seen sweetened condensed milk as a flavor option and I will definitely go back to get it again because I loved it! It wasn't the only good option, either. Most of the syrups are made in house and the barista recommends the vanilla syrup which is made with real Madagascar vanilla beans in house. The barista was very friendly and answered all of my questions enthusiastically. Bob's Java Hot is a great place to get a hot coffee on a cold day. It's in a great location and has exceptional service. I will be going again!

Miles C.

Yelp
This is a great coffee shop! It has many options for drinks and many unique flavors that caribou does not offer. It also plays chill music that someone made on a playlist. There is decent parking around the corner. The prices are very reasonable! Service is fast!
google avatar

Marie C.

Yelp
I went here to do some work on my laptop on a late Thursday afternoon and it wasn't crowded and there wasn't a huge wait. I ordered a large vanilla latte and found a spot at a large high table. They had a few different kinds of seating options - counter, small table, high tables. It was pretty quiet overall, there weren't a lot of people talking but they did have good music playing. The windows were all fogged up because of the snow and cold but I can see how on a clear day it would be a really nice spot if you like people watching. The coffee itself was pretty good! I think I'll definitely be coming back here a lot.

Madi B.

Yelp
One of my favorite coffee shops! I overlooked it for so long but finally tried it a few months ago and I haven't looked back. Their drinks are delicious every time, and their Miel is probably my favorite that I've had in the area. There's never too much of a wait, if any, and all of the baristas have been great! They also have a big garage door style window that they open when it's nice out, which makes it even more of a lovely chill vibe. 10/10 would recommend!

Yelp
My local coffee shop, one of the most authentic spots in the 55408. Fun ambience, delicious coffee, and great people. Alycia and Andy are simply the best -- they're the type of people who know my order once I walk through the door. One star deduction for mgmt - for everything I've seen, never saw the owner once. But, still one of my favorite places in the twin cities for coffee.

Yelp
A group of friends went to Lyndale to grab dinner and was looking for a place to sit and talk. You would think in such a hipster area that would be easy, think again. We walked a couple blocks and stumbled across the gem Bobs Java Hut. Upon entry it has the feel of a throwback gas station that has been merged with a modern cafe with a twist of biker bar. Gritty, eclectic and fun are words I would use to festive this place. It has ample seating with a couple group clusters and some fantastic coffee drinks. Our group can vouch for chai and vanilla latte, a Mexican mucha and a bevy of iced drinks. They also have great drip and our over and use B and A one of The Twin Cities best toasters to provide good beans. The staff was fun, our hostess gave us killer drinks but a tour of the greater area and coming from California I would use this place as a work spot and connecting point if I didn't live in the burbs. Check out Bobs, it will deliver

Yelp
Great local coffee place. Best dirty Chai I've ever had, honestly. Good, welcoming environment and perfectly sassy baristas

Yelp
A biker coffee shop? Sign me up! Stop by during the weekend to check out all the bikes lined up and for some friendly conversation with some rad folks! Delicious java drinks named after motorcycle parts, chrome detailing, and a super cool atmosphere complete with the sound of revving engines and the smell of exhaust. *swoon* They have remodeled since my last visit and the space looks so great and modern. This place was my go to back in the day for evening studying and java and it looks like this is still the case! Also awesome is the garage door in the front that opens up to let fresh air in and allow for some great people watching. Love love love. Try the carburetor!

Yelp
Nice Ambience and perfect for working while getting some awesome coffee. Tried their Gibraltar (Cortado like drink). Not disappointed. Down: espressos blend wasn't strongly enough. If you're there in the neighborhood, stop by and unwind. Perfect for a weekend morning. Tip: This place is few blocks away from Galactic pizza. Tried their pizza? If not, there is your lunch spot.

Yelp
Consistently the best iced chai I've ever had, hands down. Bob's attracts all kinds of people, and it's a great spot to sit and people-watch. Baristas are friendly and the service is quick. My only complaint is that I no longer live in Uptown and have to drive the 25 minutes there and back each week to get my fix, and I suppose I can't blame Bob's for that one.

Yelp
Came here after lunch today. I used to live very close to this place earlier but had never been here before. First thing that strikes you is their love for Motorcycles. The decor has lots of Twin Cities Motor racing history including mini installations. The coffee is also good. The internet is fast and spacious seating is available outside and inside.
google avatar

Yelp
I'm loving how casual, unassuming, and vaguely alternative this place is. It's located in an old garage under a tattoo parlor, and the vibe is basically what you'd expect from that description. The music is alternative rock that makes me nostalgic, and the retro biker interior is a nice change. Drink prices are cheap too! 3.75 for a latte, iirc. I had the Mexican mocha with light syrup, and was not disappointed. It was pretty quiet and good for working, too. Check this place out if you want to support an independent local coffee house with a fun vibe.

Anastasia W.

Yelp
Best chais and homemade flavoring/syrups! All of the baristas are very welcoming. My favorite coffee shop at the moment!
google avatar

Yelp
Visiting from Southern California, this place was recommended highly by my friends in the Twin Cities. Calming environment with a decent cup of coffee and a lovely place to get some writing done. The barista is friendly and the place is "coffee shop" clean. I'm feeling it.

Yelp
Pros: - carry Patisserie 46 bakery items - they open up the garage door window walls in the nice weather - a neat reasonable selection of drinks - great work space for those on a laptop - cool décor - biker coffee bar Cons: - sometimes very loud due to last bullet point

Yelp
I write this review a bit heavy-heartedly: I'm beginning invisalign treatment soon, which means no more sitting around sipping casually on a coffee for the foreseeable future. So, I'll start with the take-home: Go to Bob's, keep them busy and open until I'm able to return. I beg you. First thing's first, the coffee here is top notch. Excellent espresso drinks, chai latte is spot on, and that's 90% of what I care about. Service is great, but not coached-to-upsell and in-your-face. The clientelle is a pretty good representation of uptown: you'll get your college kids, your burnouts, your homeless, and the occasional MLM scammer (Side note: Forex trading is just about the easiest way to lose money, and MLM is a close second - so don't buy into the Forex MLM scam I saw a lady pitching the last time I came in). Plenty of outlets (pro tip, the large, orange, epoxy-topped table has a long power strip underneath it). The only complaint I have, and I honestly had to think about it, is that the baked goods can be a bit picked-over by the time you get there - if you're a night owl like myself. That said, the baked goods are also excellent, so this is really just a complaint made in order to have at least one thing in the "Cons" category. I'm not saying everybody will love Bob's as much as I do, but anybody who likes coffee should at least give it a shot.

Yelp
Really enjoyed this spot! I went with my standard macchiato and their house Mexican Mocha. The macchiato was a bit sharp, overall still good. Mexican Mocha didn't have the heat of many I've tried, but again overall pretty good. Staff is friendly, music was a great change from the usual, folksy, boring background sound; who would have thought I would hear No Doubt and LCD Soundsystem in one stop? Looking forward to the next visit!
google avatar

Ethan H.

Yelp
We went for the first time this afternoon and were impressed! The drip coffee was decent and the chai latte was one of the best in uptown. The man working was very friendly. If we go again and it's just as pleasant, will bump to a five-star rating.

Yelp
As someone not remotely affiliated with biker culture, I harbored something close to fear and intimidation about the old, pre-remodel Bob's. It seemed like a welcoming enough place for people in that subculture, Masons, or people with cute dogs. And from what I had heard, the remodel was designed to widen the appeal to cool moms & millennial dog-gawkers in athleisure. Neither the before nor after ambiance appealed to me a lot -- there are plenty of other coffee shops with less second-hand smoke that appeal to the young and trendy in the area. But, I decided to give it a try anyway. And I'm glad I did. So far, I've had tasty iced tea, and a pourover, and have tried a solid latte. I've also heard great things about the regular drip coffee and patisserie 46 (I think?) pastries. Everything seems moderately priced and high quality. The interior space has many types of seating areas, many of which seem well-suited for working. As I expected, service has not been exceedingly friendly, but the crowd does seem friendly and respectful. It's not the quietest shop, especially on the weekends and when the garage-like windows are open, and the smoke thing is still an issue, but those are my only "complaints." Bob's has good coffee and as expected, great dog and people-watching.
google avatar

Yelp
2 pm: Enter Bob's Java Hut to do some work. Order a latte. 2:03 pm: Get latte, unpack laptop, and start working. 2:05 pm: Several people bring their puppies into Bob's. 2:06 pm: Puppies start playing with each other. Cuteness overload begins. Distracted. 2:35 pm: People and puppies leave. I "replace" them with videos of dogs greeting their owners who have returned home from war. Coffee is now gone. 3:30 pm: Leave coffee shop without doing any work and wanting a puppy. Coolest biker coffee shop ever.

Yelp
Finding a cafe with free wi-fi can be a challenge in Chicago, but this isn't apparently as much of an issue in Minneapolis....thanks to Bob's Java Hut! This was the perfect atmosphere for Sarah P and I to get some yelping done, quiet enough to jump on a conference call (well perhaps not quiet for everyone else once we started the call) and they happen to make a very tasty non-fat iced latte with sugar free raspberry syrup! And yes, It's all about the raspberry syrup!
google avatar

Mark D.

Yelp
Bob's is an Uptown staple! Fast friendly workers. A warm place to rest if you're out riding your hog! LOL! Tasty coffee and cold press coffee are abundant. Places to park your bike, and spots to sit. Ask for the Wi-Fi password.
google avatar

Michael F.

Yelp
I've lived in a number of different neighborhoods in Minneapolis, and I must say that Uptown is the worst for coffee shops. It isn't that there aren't a metric shitload of them, it is that they are usually staffed and patronized by pretentious hipsters. Bob's is far more laid back, and much like the strange books from the 80's, you can choose your own adventure. Get a drink and lurk in the back on your laptop, or wander out front to converse with the folks that are lingering around the place. Do whatever you like, you'll get nary a sideways glance or disgusted sigh. I spend a lot of time on my motorcycle, and having a welcoming place to warm up on a cool evening just a few blocks from home is a fantastic way to end a ride. Good selection of teas and most coffee drinks I've had there are nicely prepared. I have no idea if they make the cookies in-house or buy them in, but I've had a few and they are consistently good. Bonus point for making lamps out of vintage motorcycle headlights.

Colleen W.

Yelp
Horrible service and the coffee isn't good anymore. This no cash thing makes me not tip.
google avatar

Jana C.

Yelp
Awful customer service. Tacit response to my 'good morning'. I ordered an Americano (1:1 shot espresso:hot H2O) and a small was $1.75. The lady behind the counter was so unpleasant, didn't even bother asking for the change that was never offered. i SO wanted to make her the object of heartfelt invective, but I took a deep breath instead. i came because the place looked novel, and honestly, it sort of reminded me of all the fun, bohemian-type cafes that are strewn throughout the great city of Portland. And so in I came, even doing a 180 to get here. Not only did the customer service stink, but the americano's espresso was honestly expressionless.... no flavor!!! What beans does this place use?
google avatar

Linda H.

Yelp
Love the garage doors! Even when you sit inside, you feel like you are outside. Coffee was great, the Mexican Mocha and Cold Press Coffee were some of the best I have had, They allow dogs inside and out, service is super friendly, and the crowd is diverse. The only downside is the bathroom. I totally get that the bathroom is not a big deal as many of the regulars are Harley driving bikers who probably don't care but for me, the picky bathroom person, I didn't like it. I will try to not use it next time. Cookies were yummy, Internet was a little slow but all in all, this is going to be a new fave coffee shop of mine. Pack up your pooch, go potty before you leave home, and go enjoy some coffee at Bob's.
google avatar

Kathy C.

Yelp
One of my favorite places to kick it on a breezy afternoon, Bob's Java Hut is home to bikers and so much more. Despite their meager food offerings, Bob's makes a fierce cup, and always has a tattered chair and chipped up table upon which to partake. My favorite place to sit when I'm sipping solo is their nifty metal bar and squishy bar stools. I tend to get a lot of homework done on these perches. There is also a barista whose name I don't know that always plays really good music. If it's a dude behind the counter and you've never heard anything like what is on, chances are that's the guy. The reason I love Bob's Java Hut so much is because they have a garage door that acts as a wall-sized window, and when the weather changes it can be rolled up or down accordingly. It also makes for a great people watching zone.
google avatar

Jenna P.

Yelp
As a barista myself finding good drinks can be hard but at Bob's Java Hut I was very impressed. I got an 'oil change' which is a dirty chai, there was 2 shots of espresso in it and was very yummy. The espresso was very rich and full of caffeine. I would definitely recommend!

Yelp
This is my first review y'all. Bob's is my new favorite place. Awesome drinks, friendly staff, and a good atmosphere for getting some work done. Music isn't too loud. Lots of space, and outlets, fun biker decor. I love you, Bob!

Anon A.

Yelp
So Bob's Java Hut...a place I now give ONE HALF STAR lost all the ambiance, they close early, cutting off alot of the crowd that would come after recovery meetings, and buy and hang out. They dont take cash only credit cards. its + $ 7 for a 20 oz carmel mocha breve,( $ 2 of that is for the cream) with " home made additives" like carmel which has no flavor. BOBS has just lost all that made it good, the good employees get fired or worked to death.. The employees make the environment and everytime there is a good team the mgmt screws it up.. I cant comment on their page because they limit what we can complain about, and allows no posts, so all the positives you see are from folks like Andy and the like they made it successful.. They were accurate, but Andy no longer works there, so the photos and updates were great but there are few good things left, the reviews pre 2019 are what it WAS mgmt now tries to make up for their loses since remodeling by selling over priced coffee cups, hats, waterbottles, quart glass jugs with logos pins and patches but is a bit steep in price and late to that game. I have been a regular since it was across the street and until the remodeling and covid it was really going good.. doing ok, but since the remodeling, There is nothing there any more to keep most of even the most devout coming back.. the environment is gone, the ambiance? What ambiance with out the baristas that bring it? The short opening schedule and the menu which is shrunk includes no food per se and is more expensive, this is my own feelings and opinions, and yes I call it like I see it.. so im gonna make some angry,oh well...its in need of a rework or it might not stay, and winter is coming...

Yelp
I am not nearly cool enough to hang out here, but they don't seem to mind. Super friendly staff. Super yummy miels. Super cool music mix. Super kitschy fireplace video playing on the big screen. I kind of have a crush on the old dude with the moustache and beret who was there tonight, but don't tell him. I am pretty sure that he is cooler than I am too!

Yelp
Bob's Java Hut is the kind of place where leather is ubiquitous, cigarettes dangle from mouths and the java-slinging barista casually says "Well that fu*$kin' sucks because it's YOUR deal, not mine," to a customer known by name. In other words, I love it here. The coffee's good, the chai's good and they have hummus & pita, a coffee house must for this incessantly hungry girl. (Has Bethenny bought the rights to that book title yet?) Anyhow, the absolute best thing Bob's has to offer is the combination of fresh air and WiFi in the summertime. The front window opens like a garage door (or is it a garage door? You'd think I'd know by now...) meaning you get a breeze while you browse. It's the greatest.

E _.

Yelp
Strongest and most flavorful cold press you'll find in Uptown. Enticing atmosphere to add to the calm ambience. Won't regret it.

Yelp
Where to even begin. We love Bob's. In town for a wedding and we went every day. Great place to work or hang out. Truly incredible service with friendly staff. Really going to miss the crankshaft (with oat milk). Will come back just for Bob's.

Yelp
Convenient coffee shop with delightful clientele. I had a great conversation with someone while sipping my tea and relaxing in one of their squishy chairs. Friendly atmosphere.

Yelp
First time visit. My iced Americano and wife's iced latte both sucked. Simple as that.

Yelp
Any place that gives me a coffee when I forgot my wallet gets a 5-Star rating. This place obviously understands my love & need for coffee first thing in the morning. After realizing my wallet was still at home, I was happy to walk the block and a half back home to get it. "Don't worry about it. Bring the $ whenever you get a chance" (while sliding a large cup of coffee my way). Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Bobs Java Hut. You complete me.
google avatar

Kit B.

Yelp
I'm writing this from Bob's because I really love it that much. If someone in the metro area asks me what my favorite place is for coffee, I always quickly reply with "Bob's Java Hut - no question." Tip: If you check in on Yelp, and show it to the barista, you get a free sticker! Very cool Yelp deal. I'm devoted to the Mexican mocha. Not too choclatey, not too coffee-ish, but with plenty of delicious spices (maybe cayenne? Red pepper?) to kick it up a notch. Culinary schools teach us that pairing chocolate with spice brings out the sweetness of the cocoa, and this drink is delicious proof of that idea. This morning, I had a peanut butter cookie, too, which was large and moist. KIT HATES DRY COOKIES. The atmosphere here is pretty cool - a really diverse crowd. As many have said, Bob's is heavily frequented by bikers, but it's definitely not something to be afraid of. The crowd here is friendly, very open-minded, and will likely hold the door open for you if you're nearby. Strong, free Wi-Fi, and although outlets are a bit sparse, they're still easily found. I've yet to have a surly barista here - they are all exceptionally friendly. Love the industrial feel here - the large garage doors that open in the front of the shop are really spectacular in the spring, but also nice in the winter for the view and natural light. Distressed paint, scuffed hardwood floors, and motorcycle wall art are abundant here. It is a really cool, low-key place to while away an afternoon.

Yelp
What's the general rule about the internet? Don't read the comments. What's the cardinal rule of Yelp? Read the reviews. I broke the #1 Yelp rule before coming to Bob's Java Hut. Had I read the reviews, I probably would have gone elsewhere. I don't hate Bob's, it's just not my jam. I go to coffee shops with a book in hand. I'm looking for a quiet-ish place to enjoy my coffee, book and to not be bothered. Bob's is not this place... What Bob's is though, is a biker coffee bar. Motorcycles outside, motorcycle stuff inside, bikers everywhere. The windows open to the outside were fantastic, with the exception of the exhaust noise every few minutes. I got a phone call and had to leave shortly after I got there and I was fine to head out so soon. I did enjoy the coconut cookie, though! And my iced coffee was super strong (in a good way).

Sina R.

Yelp
I was a little hesitant based on the exterior- thought I might be walking in to a 60s space machine- but you know what they say, don't judge a book by its cover. I'm glad I didn't! Bob's is a great local coffee house. The staff is really nice and friendly, and the few times that I have been there, it seems that the other patrons are great to be around as well. Also- it is pet friendly. Good selection of food and drinks. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Mediocre coffee, shitty service and not a good selection of coffee. Two stars just for the interior.
