16 Hidden Gems to Visit in Portugal

"Boca do Inferno (in English: “Mouth of Hell”) is a scenic cliff formation located west of Cascais, Portugal. It gets its name from the rough ocean waves which crash against the cliff face, forcing their way into a cave system, and spraying angrily from an opening above. The cave has been a tourist attraction for centuries. One of the first “actuality films”, A Sea Cave Near Lisbon (1896), was shot from inside the cave to showcase the majestic waves pouring in. Boca do Inferno is better known as the place where Aleister Crowley, the famed astrologer, magician, and occultist faked his death in 1930. With the help of poet Fernando Pessoa, he was able to give the appearance of a suicide (perhaps inspired by the death of the Greek philosopher Empedocles, who threw himself into a volcano). Pessoa handed Crowley’s suicide note to newspapers, helpfully explaining the Thelemic symbols and translating mangled Portuguese to police and media alike. Crowley reappeared three weeks later at the opening of an exhibition of his works in a Berlin gallery, suggesting this whole affair was more publicity stunt than anything else. The content of the note also indicates it was intended to annoy his lover and magical partner.  Today, there is a small white plaque mounted on the rock commemorating the event. It tells the story of the pseudocide and provides the text of Crowley’s suicide note: “Não Posso Viver Sem Ti. A outra ‘Boca De Infierno’ apanhar-me-á não será tão quente como a tua” which translates roughly to “Can’t live without you. The other mouth of hell that will catch me won’t be as hot as yours.” That might be touching if any of it were genuine." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

From all Lisbon and surroundings this was the most disappointing attraction for us. I mean don't get me wrong, it has its history and the water caves are nice to look at but I think you can spend your time visiting so many other better locations. Also when visiting Boca do Inferno you can barely breathe because there is a disgusting smell almost all over the place. I do not recommend this attraction!

If you have time while in Cascais, definitely check this out - impressive nature! There’s also a public toilet (don’t recommend it though 😬) and a small cafe. We had some ice lollies and walked back to Cascais city centre (about 20 min walk).

Very pretty and scenic area. Wonderful natural rock formations and breathtaking views over the ocean side. Highly recommend the walk there from Caicais alas it is really pretty as well. Obly downside is the rubbish that can be seen and found around the area, mostly fishing lines. Overall a great experience and a sweet spot to visit/experience.

I visited Boca do Inferno a few days ago, and it was an amazing experience. The big waves crashing on the rocks made a loud, scary sound that felt very powerful. The view of the ocean and cliffs was so beautiful and dramatic — it felt like nature was showing its true power. It’s a great place to visit if you love nature and adventure.

Must see in Cascais. 15-20 minute walk along the beach and parks from downtown Cascais. This is a beautiful natural land bridge at the edge of the sea. There’s a plaque explaining how Alistair Crowley wrote a note to his lover there which is interesting. It’s in Portuguese only so google lens translate came in handy.

This is amazing place in Cascais a beautiful town of Portugal . This place in on the beach where water has cut through the rocks. Looks it tools thousands of years for water to make this penetration, this shows how old this place may be. There is a nice fish restaurant. Nice place to sit and relax

Worth a short visit to see this rugged part of the coastline. There is parking nearby. It was free to visit (we went on a Wednesday morning) and there are a few touristy shops along the way and a paid restroom. We walked from Cascais along the coast and it took about 20-30 minutes.

Great place to observe the sunrise or sunset, by the beautiful calm blue sea. It does get busy during the aforementioned times. No ticket purchase necessary.
