16 Hidden Gems to Visit in Portugal

"Boca do Inferno (in English: “Mouth of Hell”) is a scenic cliff formation located west of Cascais, Portugal. It gets its name from the rough ocean waves which crash against the cliff face, forcing their way into a cave system, and spraying angrily from an opening above. The cave has been a tourist attraction for centuries. One of the first “actuality films”, A Sea Cave Near Lisbon (1896), was shot from inside the cave to showcase the majestic waves pouring in. Boca do Inferno is better known as the place where Aleister Crowley, the famed astrologer, magician, and occultist faked his death in 1930. With the help of poet Fernando Pessoa, he was able to give the appearance of a suicide (perhaps inspired by the death of the Greek philosopher Empedocles, who threw himself into a volcano). Pessoa handed Crowley’s suicide note to newspapers, helpfully explaining the Thelemic symbols and translating mangled Portuguese to police and media alike. Crowley reappeared three weeks later at the opening of an exhibition of his works in a Berlin gallery, suggesting this whole affair was more publicity stunt than anything else. The content of the note also indicates it was intended to annoy his lover and magical partner.  Today, there is a small white plaque mounted on the rock commemorating the event. It tells the story of the pseudocide and provides the text of Crowley’s suicide note: “Não Posso Viver Sem Ti. A outra ‘Boca De Infierno’ apanhar-me-á não será tão quente como a tua” which translates roughly to “Can’t live without you. The other mouth of hell that will catch me won’t be as hot as yours.” That might be touching if any of it were genuine." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

This was one of my favorite stops during my trip to Portugal. Unfortunately I went on a day that the waves were not too strong but it was still pretty impressive sight to see. It was so mesmerizing and peaceful even with the fury of the ocean coming down on the rocks. If you visit please be careful, there are a lot of areas where potential deadly accidents can happen. Be mindful of where you step and how far out in the rocks you go. Definitely worth a trip to Boca Du Inferno.

Google
A bit disappointing as not much to see really other than the cave with sea water thundering through. It is a natural wonder but not worth all the while to come just for it. The coastline nearby is worth visiting, best to combine with a visit to Cascais which is a cosy and lively coastal town.

Google
Boca do Inferno is definitely worth a visit. Even though the sea was quite calm during our visit, the rock formations were still stunning and really show the power of nature. It’s just a short walk from Cascais, so it can be a bit touristy, but the views make it worthwhile. The coastline in this whole area is incredibly beautiful and impressive — a great spot for photos and a nice stop while exploring Cascais.

Google
One of those places where nature puts on a show. Its a quick view stop but worth it. Perfect spot for a coastal break, stunning photos, and watching the Atlatbic crash through the rock formations right in front of you. There are walkways also that allow easier access to the viewpoint.

Google
It’s stunning, busy as it’s a typical tourist attraction, but I think we were there close to the end of the season. I sat with some local fishermen on the rocks and listened to their banter. It was just a refreshing change from the hustle and bustle. Just sit and listen to the ocean.

Google
The view was magnificent. The spot itself is surrounded by railings so it’s difficult to have a good view on it, but the coast nearby was as pretty. Just be careful not to fall off the cliff as there’s no protection

Google
Boca do Inferno is nature’s drama at its finest. The crashing waves against the rugged cliffs create a mesmerizing spectacle, especially at sunset. It’s a place where the power of the ocean meets raw beauty—wild, unforgettable, and deeply moving. 🌊

Walking down the path towards the marina was one of the most pleasant walks I've ever taken. Lovely weather, not too busy and plenty of shops to look around while you admire the views.

Yelp
NATURE: When in Cascais make sure that you visit Boca Do Inferno! It's right in the coast and got the oat beautiful view of the Atlantic Ocean ! There were many tourists and the whole area was such a vibe ! Stunning scenery !! Will be back !!

Yelp
Pretty place, not too much there except a few concession stands and a restaurant. We're there during high tide but didn't really see the violent waves crash. Likely will need to go there during rough waves to see that. Not going to fault this place for not putting on a show when I'm not there. I would like to think it would be pretty cool for a bit, but if I can't see myself hanging out there for more than 15 minutes, I think the score is fair.

Yelp
What a great stop after our main stop in the bay of Cascais. There's a few steps here to go down but it's worth the view of the ocean and cliffs. Then stop by Ola for an ice cream, you know you want to!

Yelp
As we start into 2023, my first review of the year is literally the "Mouth of Hell." Yes, on the way to Cabo Da Roca, I switched from train to bus in Cascais but first walked through town to here. The chasm is of course at seaside and is a pleasant walk along the rocky coast. It was a mostly calm day on the Atlantic but the water coming and going into the rocky area was still quite dramatic. There are some shops near the entrance - coffee, ice cream, sandwiches and gifts. Interesting tip... the cave was the first to be depicted in moving pictures in a 1896 British film. It hasn't changed much since then though the marked tourist path is only from above. You can see the stairs and walkway down but there are signs warning that it is forbidden. https://youtu.be/LdhfvHE2AQc [Review 19032 overall - 228 in Portugal - 1 of 2023.]

Yelp
The Nature never stops to amaze me. A short walk from the center of Cascais, tiny coastal town not far from Lisboa, you will notice many signs pointing out towards the rocky beach with signs Boca do Inferno-The Hell's mouth. There are many paths you can take and explore this phenomenon. For tens of thousands of years waves have been pounding on the rocks of Atlantic Ocean coastline eventually eroding them. That is how this chasm with arch was created that makes waves shoot up high in the air. It's a nice little stop down the coast. Close by there is Santa Maria lighthouse and museum and Faro hotel with great sushi restaurant I warmly recommend.

Yelp
One morning, I cycled about 13-14 miles round trip from Cascais to Guincho Beach. Someone at the Cascais visitor's center told me that this was a highlight to stop at along the way, and wow I'm glad I did. It's a stunning circular rock formation through which Atlantic Ocean waves crash relentlessly, with a stunning view west of the trackless sea and north of a beautiful but rugged coastline. Steps have been built to help visitors check out the area, and its really worth looking at the entire place. I came here in February when it was sunny and warm but fairly empty and quiet. There will always be other tourists about, but it was nice to enjoy this stunning place in some relative peace and quiet.

Yelp
Absolutely stunning experience. Picture the Atlantic Ocean from high cliffs and endless hiking trails. Lots of tourists unfortunately - no good food options, and you have to pay to use the bathroom. Typical euro experience. However - it was a beautiful experience. You can easily find a spot to appreciate the sunset and just love life without any worries. Check out my photos for an accurate understanding of what to expect. Much love!

Yelp
The Boca do Inferno is just a short walk, maybe 15/20 min, from center of Cascais along the coast. Take the time to walk along the rock formations, watching the ocean roll in and crash along the cliffs while an occasional splash gets you form a natural blow hole. This is an awesome site to see and hear the force of the tide crashing over the rocks. Over many years, the tide has formed this cave like area that is called; "Hell's Mouth" You do not want to miss this place!

Yelp
Awesome place to visit. The town of Cascais is beautiful and the walk to the sea cliffs to see this amazing rock formation is even better. Come at high tide where you get to see the dramatic waves of the Atlantic crash into the rocks causing this roaring sound. Come in summer, the beach is just about a 20 minute walk back towards the main town. It's breath taking.

Yelp
Boca do Inferno is worth stopping by on your way to town. Interesting natural site with some small cafes next to it.
