The Boca Raton Airport opened in 1936 as a grass strip that was once part of Florida Atlantic University. It was built for guests flying in to stay at the Ritz-Carlton Cloister Inn. After the United States entered into WWII, the airport became part of the Boca Raton Army in 1942 where it played a crucial role in training Army Air Corps in radar technology. After the war the Boca Raton Airport opened after the United States government transferred the property to the City of Boca Raton.
Celebrating the storied history of this airfield a new airport observation area was dedicated on January 28, 2025. The area has a shade cover, landscaping and benches giving you an unobstructed 360 degree view of the planes taking off and landing at the airport. Interpretative signs give information about the local wildlife, history of the airport, navigation equipment, and the types of planes you will see. As you watch the planes you can even hear the instructions from the air traffic control tower. Watching the planes take off so close to you is thrilling. Anyone who has an interest in aviation will enjoy visiting this unique park.
While the planes may be the star attraction the wildlife is also not to be missed. If you are lucky you will see burrowing owls and gopher tortoises. Burrowing owls are considered endangered, threatened, or of special concern in nine U.S. states. Unlike other owls they are not strictly nocturnal and are active during the day. They make their nests in underground burrows, which are dug out by ground squirrels and they prefer open grasslands. Burrowing owls are protected by the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Gopher tortoises are listed as a threatened species in Florida. They have been hunted for meat, run over by vehicles, and sold as pets but the greatest blow to their population has been the destruction of their habitat. I'm glad I got to see them safely protected here.
It was nice to see people of all ages taking delight in the planes and wildlife. The Boca Raton Airport Authority (BRAA) did an amazing job. There is so much room for parking or ride your bike in and leave it in one of the racks. Pack a picnic and stay for awhile. This is such a cool spot for free fun in Boca Raton.
