A Texas Barbecue Primer From Regional Styles to 6 Essential Stops

"This East Texas mainstay continues to thrive even after the passing of the late founder, Roland Lindsey, thanks to his wife, Nancy, and granddaughter, Madilynne, who run the corporate business. Lindsey first opened Bodacious in 1968 off Mobberly Avenue in Longview, and today his grand-son-in-law, Spencer Halling, mans the pits of the original location, cranking out housemade sausages with a satisfying snap and saucy brisket sandwiches served chopped or sliced. The Mel-Man sandwich — a large helping of chopped brisket mixed with a chopped hot link between two buns — has become somewhat of a local legend over the years, and their Dr. Pepper burnt ends and spicy pinto beans are the winning combination and only served on Fridays or Saturdays (sometimes both days)." - Kristy Alpert

Same bodacious that has been around for years. Great value, tender meat. They use sugar in the tub, not my favorite. We had the four meat plate, and all the sides so we're able to try just about everything on the menu.

Google
Great food both meats and sides. Tender meat and tasty sides. Will have to come back and try something else. Ribs were good, same for beef slices which are briskets and sausages. Good portion, a little slow in getting them but increased the anticipation. Green beans were on sweeter side but delicious. Mac and cheese could be better. Potato salad was also good. Wish there were greens. Didn’t have enough coleslaw to scoop up so we skipped it. For first timers: order your meats whether sandwiches or plates, wait for your order then go down the line to scoop up your sides. Drinks station is next then go get your seat to chow down!

Who doesn't love good ole fashion bbq? And that's what they do... old school bbq. But just like your uncle, who can smoke brisket, the potato salad may have a little too much pepper and the beans are meh. The atmosphere is that of a roadhouse bar and a small town family restaurant.

We were visiting LGV for the day and didn’t open our food until we made it back to Dallas. (bc we thought we would be getting the same quality we would’ve received from the one on the loop.) Idk what has happened from the last time we were there, but I do know they have fallen off! When he called to speak to the manager she said that the amount was correct. This is a snack or even a kids meal!!! We got the 2 meat $14.95 and 3 meat $18.95. And man these ribs were tiny and looked super dry. We didn’t even eat it, we gave it away, going to eat somewhere where they provide the correct portion size for the price.

Google
The customer service was absolutely amazing. The guy (didn’t catch his name) who took my order was so friendly, patient and welcoming. I went around 2PM and the food was hot, fresh and amazingly delicious.

Google
We are from Alabama and love bbq! I had the chicken and my husband had the ribs. Really, really good. We loved the bbq sauce. In fact we bought some to take back home.

Vanessa Payne

Google
The potato salad had so much pepper in it I could not eat it! There was so much of it that it could of killed me. All I tasted was pepper. It was like they threw the whole pepper shaker in it. The potato salad was gray in color. That is how bad it was. I did tell the guy in front but he didn't seem to care. The turkey sandwiches I ordered were so dry. Save your money and go to Boxcar BBQ were it's delicious and worth the money. Don't waste your money on this trash. No wonder why the parking lot is always empty. The food is terrible.

Google
Maybe if they hired Pardner's Bar-B-Que to consult how portion sizes and customer service works, this establishment might please a customer. This is the worst bbq joint I’ve ever been to. The portion sizes are disrespectful and the customer services is a negative star review. I will never spend my money here again and will encourage every human being I know not to spend money here.

Yelp
I have always heard about Bodacious BBQ, and this last weekend we finally got to try it out The restaurant was cute clean, it looked like an old house that had been converted We were happily greeted immediately upon entering and the young man who took our order was patient, helpful and kind. What could you ask for? The overall staff was quick efficient and they made our order exactly as we asked. While the BBQ wasn't the best I have ever had. It was extremely good! The sides (I got barbecue beans and green beans) were delicious. I will say the barbecue beans were some of the better ones. I've had I thoroughly enjoyed them. The spareribs were nicely charred, pretty tender and very, very good. The brisket was very tasty but a little bit dry. My biggest complaint was their barbecue sauce. It has a strong mustard base and I am just not a fan of mustard. I know that's on me, not on them. We were on a four day, two state road trip, and I think this was the best meal we had on the trip. It was by far away the best value that we got. Overall, the amount of food that we got for the price we paid at bodacious was extremely good. If I ever get back to East Texas, we will be sure and stop.

Yelp
Came in during a work trip for some good ol bbq and was hit and miss. The brisket was a little dry for my taste but the turkey was good. Sausage was okay. Overall the meal was a little bland for me. The Mac and cheese was good but I wasn't a fan of the potato salad. There wasn't many people in the restaurant when we got there which was a little surprising and there was only two people working. Seemed very slow for dinner time. The place is interesting inside, sort of felt like grandma's house. Lots of character.

Yelp
The food was excellent! We had sausage and chopped beef. Both were delicious. I picked up our order in the drive through. The service was quick and friendly.

Yelp
This is the 3rd best BBQ I've had since I've lived here. Box Car in my opinion is #1 and Carter's is #2. I love the employees at this location they're suggestive when you don't know what to order that's good. The sloppy Joe's and potato salad is really a great plate.

Yelp
We are here years ago during a training session at the hospital. I have heard recently that this place is closing or has closed so this might just be an honorary review. Our lunch we ate their was memorable and we still remember it...the ribs were excellent, even for theBodacious franchise.....cooked perfect and not chewy and pulled right off the bone. We had gone in for a Bo Pie (like a Bodacious version of a super Frito pie) but this was overshadowed by the ribs we got. The ribs were so good it was love at first bite. We sat in the back at a round table under an alcove type thing.....very old feel to the place. We especially remember the friendly older man who would shuffle around in the back cooking things as well as what had to be some of the luckiest dogs out back who must have had those scraps daily. Excellent memory and visit.

Yelp
The original location and great East Texas BBQ experience every time. Just off of US-90.

David H.

Yelp
This is the BEST pulled pork I've ever had and the brisket was falling apart! Me and my wife came here hungry and left full for without hurting the wallet. The guy who checked us out was both friendly and fast. I'll be back anytime I'm in Longview.
google avatar

Megan S.

Yelp
Bodacious is back and better than ever!!! Newly renovated and really well done. Some of our favorites are the brisket, mac & cheese, and banana pudding but it's all good. We got there right before closing and the owner was so sweet and took great care of us.

Cathy C.

Yelp
this is a great place for BBQ. I've eaten lots of BBQ lots of places in Texas and other states that have reputations for great BBQ. Bodacious is the best. It also has a nice rustic atmosphere which is quite fitting for a good BBQ place. You won't go wrong having a meal here

Yelp
I was there just this past weekend and I was in town for a funeral. I decided to choose this restaurant I wanted a baked potato. It seems not to be a big thing and Tyler having a baked potato, but upon receiving my order, I didn't get any barbecue sauce the potato was dry. I literally had to go back to my hotel room and put it together myself revamp it if you have it. The service was somewhat OK and in the restaurant itself was pretty decent.
google avatar

Kevin J.

Yelp
Best Barbque in the area. You don't even need bbq sauce with the ribs. The service was good and they actually remember repeat customers.

Yelp
To start off, if you are looking for the Bodacious BBQ on the Texas Monthly list, this is not that location - you want to go to the original Mobberly Avenue location./ I grew up coming here for either a sit down or takeout, and it was the go-to place for BBQ. Coming back to Longview a few times per year, my parents usually want to eat here. On this visit, as well as the last two times, it was just average and is not the same quality it used to be. On this last visit, I had sliced beef with two sides - the brisket was very dry and didn't have much flavor, which is consistent with my last several visits. I got pinto beans and mac and cheese as my sides and they were very good. Chopped beef is good for a take-home and serve if you want to liberally apply their sauce, but for true sliced brisket it was very disappointing.

Lauri S.

Yelp
I grew up in Longview and I have dreams about their barbecue. Whenever I visit at least one meal is here. Literally the best barbecue and potato salad I have ever eaten.
google avatar

Alex W.

Yelp
This is a pretty good BBQ joint. You receive a ton of food, so go hungry. I thought the brisket was a little dry, but maybe that's why I needed to use the BBQ sauce. The side items were interesting and Mac n cheese was definitely the tastiest. I think I was expecting a little more out of the meal but it did seem like the sandwiches were better. It would be worth it to go here again and try something else.

Jacqueline R.

Yelp
I love Bodacious. Their barbeque is perfection and their sauce is unparalleled. I would literally drink it straight if it were socially acceptable. Out of the three locations I've been to, though, this is my favorite because: 1. The interior is really cool 2. Their macaroni is the best 3. You can help yourself to sides (so you can get a ton of macaroni if you want)
google avatar

Michellea D.

Yelp
Love Bodacious BBQ. Simple beef BBQ Sandwiches either chopped or sliced. The sauce is sweet BBQ sauce, pour on your own. The bread was grilled with butter. No fries only chips. Pure Texas BBQ.
google avatar

Cliff H.

Yelp
Food tastes good, depending on what you order. Priced about right for the portions. Service is usually poor, although you're last time I went the person at the register did a nice job for a change.
google avatar

Yelp
Best Bodacious around :) Staff are always friendly and welcoming and the food is always fantastic.

Yelp
Best BBQ I've had in YEARS, not exaggerating. I ordered the two meat plate (ribs and brisket) and shared it with my daughter. We also had green beans, Mac and cheese, and potato salad. The ribs were tender and delicious, perfectly seasoned. Brisket was moist and flavorful. I loved the green beans, fresh sautéed, not from a can. Potato salad is awesome too! Really can't say a bad word about this place, delicious spot!
google avatar

Andrew M.

Yelp
I thought it was good -- pretty standard Texas BBQ. No complaints; would certainly recommend. I had the brisket and pork; chopped (not a sandwich). Would recommend it. Sides are fairly 'heavy', but good. BBQ sauce is in the service line, not at the table (that may be my only complaint).
google avatar

Joseph H.

Yelp
Ribs 4 -4.5 stars. Pinto beans 2 stars. Brisket 2.5, dry and not any flavor. Did have a nice smoke ring and tender. But got to have taste, y'all.
google avatar

Jared S.

Yelp
From the name and the rave reviews I expected this place to be a raucous bbq love shack. Instead, I found a quiet (sleepy, actually) little place with good meats at a fair price. The sauce was OK--just one option, and though it didn't seem that spicy I felt it burn in my throat the whole meal. Both the slaw and the mac were quite satisfying.
google avatar

Leonardo F.

Yelp
The rubs were flavorful. Just a touch salty for me and some parts are just a touch too sweet. The potato salad was very good.

Bryan H.

Yelp
Love the atmosphere. The food is always fantastic. Love their green beans, cole slaw and mac n cheese. We have never been disappointed at this Bodacious. For me, this is the best Bidacious in the area. Love the serve yourself sides.
google avatar

Katelyn B.

Yelp
Grew up in Longview eating Bodacious BBQ pretty frequently. Moved to Austin and it wasn't until then that I realized how dang good Bodacious is. Every cut of meat is good (favorites being chopped beef and turkey), sauce is great, love their sides (amazing potato salad). I will always love this place- even in competition with some pretty great bbq in central Texas!
google avatar

Kerry S.

Yelp
I ordered the beef plate with cole slaw and pinto beans. I found the beef dry and flavorless. I had to drown it in sauce to make it palatable. I was disappointed. The slaw and beans were...well, just slaw and beans. My coworker ordered the smoked turkey sandwich. He got a bun with canned turkey sliced and slapped on it. He was disappointed too. I'd skip this one and opt for something else.
google avatar

Yelp
Good consistent BBQ with very polite service and a nice atmosphere. When my Yankee family visit, this is the place I want to show off.

Yelp
two words: the sauce THE.sauce. I'm one of those BBQ lovers that has to have BBQ. And, for me, the best I've had is Bodacious BBQ. I grew up on Bodacious BBQ. My grandparents loved it, I loved it..the whole family loved it. Many a summer was spent by the pool with takeout from Bodacious BBQ. I had family members that would come visit (they lived in the Northwest US), and they would buy a huge bottle to take back with them. It's seriously that good. These days, I live in central Texas/Hill Country area..and have been to several BBQ joints that are good- but do not serve sauce. Sad and confused would be the best way to describe my dining experience. Needless to say, I always make a stop in Bodacious BBQ when I'm back in East Texas. Other than my obvious love affair with the sauce, their meat and sides are always spot on. I'm a pretty cheap BBQ date however, my favorite meal is the good ole fashioned sloppy joe. Can't beat it.

Yelp
This is the location that was selected by Texas Monthly in their November 2015 top 25 Texas barbecue joints. I had lunch at this location and sampled several of the offerings. Brisket: Amazingly tender meat with good ratio of fat to lean and excellent bark. Ribs: Tender and meaty, these are decent ribs but not to bring fame to the joint. Sausage: Too hot, in my opinion, and a bit on the dry side. Turkey: While I prefer my turkey with dressing and gravy, this was well seasoned and not too dry. Sauce: (Regular not hot) a little to thick but with decent flavor. Use sparingly to not overpower the meat. Potato salad: Not to my liking - too much sour cream so that was the only flavor on the palate. Minimal seating. We arrived shortly after 11:30 and within a few minutes of securing a table saw the line was almost out the door. Adequate parking. The menu is a bit unusual. You can order sandwiches, but to get a plate is actually a "by the pound" purchase. My three meats, potato salad, and bottled water came to $21. Overpriced, in my opinion, but truly I am not a huge barbecue fan.

Yelp
Great barbecue place when you're passing through or staying in town. Good portions of protein. I got chopped brisket and my husband ordered the bbq ribs with were moist and flavorful. You serve yourself on the sides so my potato salad helping was bigger than my coleslaw side.:) the food tasted fresh and home made. ... Yes even the green beans tasted Fresh and not canned. We would definitely come back again. To finish off, I grabbed a pecan pie to go on the way out, I couldn't resist. I'm too full to eat the pie at the moment but it looks fantastic. Can't beat $2 for homemade pecan pie!

Yelp
Very good BBQ! Tried the ribs and sliced brisket with potato salad & cole slaw and a fried pie made of coconut cream. It was a slow Saturday night and there were no crowds. Prices not bad for the quality you get. I do admit that you should get the sauce (which is hot and yummy) as it keeps the brisket soft. Dining room closes at 8 PM so arrive before then. Decor is great and (I'm a girl who notices these things) even the wallpaper in the "cowgirls" room was cute! Great stop to make while in Longview.

Yelp
They have neat decorations inside. The staff were nice. We were not terribly impressed with the food though. The chooped beef was ok and the Turkey sandwiches the same, coleslaw was good, the beans are different not bad just unusual different. The beans seemed to be a combo of pinto and regular brown, sorry can not remember what they are called anyhow, I guess it's worth a try but not much to write home about. The bbq sauce is alright.
google avatar

Jenny G.

Yelp
We had a family dinner here since we heard it was the best BBQ in east Texas. We were not impressed at all. The restaurant was not clean AT ALL and the staff couldn't care less that we were there. You order food at the register and then get your side dishes cafeteria style. The containers with the sides were nearly emptied and they were not refilling them. The food lacked flavor and not one of us finished our food. I would never return in the future.

Yelp
This place is not open on Sundays... We were working in Marshall and heard o this place so we got in the car and drove half hour only to find out it's closed. I should have called first.. So Monday afternoon, for lunch break before I head back to Dallas I have to make a choice.. Bodacious or Juicy's.. I went with Bodacious.. and WOW.. what a choice. This is some of the best Brisket I have ever had.. trust me that is saying alot. Im pretty proud of my own.. but, this is really GOOD.. and the portions.. I could not finish what was served.

Howard L.

Yelp
Dang it, I sure wish we had .5 in scoring because this is better than a 4 star. First, the ribs are a little spicier than I prefer. Not quite too much but a little spicy. Next, they were GOOD. When I got there, they had to check to see if some were done. They were, and they were good. The best I've had in Longview. Third, the guys who were in there tonight were great. Good attitude, good service. One more thing - apparently every Bodacious is different. This one was much spicier than where I usually stop, decor was totally different, and they had Pepsi instead of Coke. That was almost the only negative but they had good root beer. I'm not sure they're quite as good as the Bodacious out on I-20 at White Oak but they are close enough to make it not worth the drive. They are on my preferred list and I've gotta tell you, it ain't a long list because I'm choosey about my BBQ!
google avatar

Amelia W.

Yelp
We stopped here on the way home during a four hour drive. I looked it up ahead of time on the Road Ninja app for iPhone. I ordered the baked potato filled with chopped beef. It was extremely delicious. I'm picky about BBQ and this was amazing. The sauce was great. We bought a bottle of it to take home. My only complaint would be that the chairs were all hard without cushioning. But the food made up for it. I will definitely stop here next time I do this drive!
google avatar

Donna K.

Yelp
Had BBQ ribs from this location on July 3rd. They were the worst ribs I've ever had. They tasted like they came from a dead rotting cow. This place gets .
google avatar

Blackland O.

Yelp
AWE-SOME!!! Best chopped beef I have ever had! Generous portions, good prices and friendly staff. I highly recommend it!

Max E.

Yelp
BBQ was good. The sides were average. It was our first time there. The food line was a little difficult to navigate. Some condiments were in a different area. It will be easier the next time we eat there.
google avatar

Lee O.

Yelp
Not impressed. Not as good as other locations. People were ride and standoffish. Briskit was dry. I won't waste my time on this location again.

Jessica S.

Yelp
I wish Yelp gave the option of 16 stars, because all of them would go to Bodacious. People from Longview have a special place in their hearts for Bodacious. My mouth salivates every time I'm near. There is just something about the air. It even makes the pre-packaged chips taste better!! But honestly, the meat and sauce can not be beat. If it's your first time, try to 2-3 meat platter, that way you get a variety. The chopped beef is my favorite. Not a potatoe salad fan but I hear it's delish.
google avatar

Romney S.

Yelp
Awesome BBQ, not a bad thing on the menu. The staff is great. Last time I was here, I bought a whole brisket and several whole racks of ribs and asked them to wrap it extra well to survive a drive back to my current home in San Diego. They triple wrapped it, packed it on ice, and tossed in some sides and bottles of bbq sauce for free.
google avatar

Food M.

Yelp
They had really good chopped brisket. There potato salad was amazing. I have had potato salad all over there's was good. There turkey was also really good. I would say for this small town of Marshall this place was awesome.
google avatar

Mary C.

Yelp
I am a fan especially of their chopped beef. BBQ is hard because lots of places are good and taste so different but their chopped beef is tender and has good flavor.
google avatar

Kim H.

Yelp
Love this place! My husband is from the area and he raved so much about their cheap Sloppy Joes and their BBQ sauce.
google avatar

Chris D.

Yelp
Been patronizing this Bodacious joint for 20+ years. I grew up on this BBQ. :) Keep smokin fellas. My next trip from Chicago, I will be right there with my order. Now if I could only get a franchise up here in Chicago I would be a happy man.
google avatar

Vijay J.

Yelp
you don't love Texas if you don't love a good BBQ and this is the best. Great Service, great food.

Rachel S.

Yelp
I wish I could give this place 100 stars! Best BBQ I have ever had. I had the frito pie and... Wow! Also had the mailman sandwich and it was the best thing I have ever had! Their sauce is so good, I could drink it.

Jim B.

Yelp
Awesome. We always stop in here while in town visiting LeTourneau University. Bodacious is our second favorite thing in Texas. As far as BBQ goes there is none better.
