Bodega El Porvenir de Cafayate

Sept.25: As we were in the wine region & lots of bodegas are in walking distance from our accommodation (most convenient), we decided to one last one for today (already done two others). Because this one was only 3 min walk from El Transito (in middleoftown), but now with a real wine yard. We just walked up the premises, but didn't do any tasting tour, as I guessed we came in too late, after 5.45PM.... In the wine yard were lots of birds of prey, however hard to get them photographed.

The bodega offers a wine tasting via an automat. You get a card and choose the wine you want and how much of it. That may seem a little soulless but it is flexible and, for walk-ins, perfect. You taste in your time, without hard or even soft selling by the staff. The prices are adequate, so that you can easily taste half a dozen wines for less than 10 USD. The Malbecs and the Tannat I tasted were, for their individual price range, excellent, and I hope to find one if them at home.

We are staying at the Porvenir lodge. The incredible staf arranged a tour + tasting at the nearby Porvenir bodega. We met Mini and she gave us a wonderful tour. She speaks very good English and explained everything very well. Very knowledgeable, kind and sweet person to chat with. She made my birthday even better. We really recommend visiting the bodega.

Great experience. We came just to try the wines, not the tour. The wines are dispensed from the machine, you can choose the volume and variety. Nini explained the different types of wine very well, it made the whole experience so much more memorable.

It was a pleasure visiting Bodega El Porvenir, I would go as far as to say this is a must visit place for anyone visiting Cafayate who enjoys wine! Our guide Nini was incredibly kind and knowledgeable. Likewise, the wines we tried were all fabulous and unique compared to other wineries that we visited in the region.

There’s a big selection of wineries in Cafayate…. Where to start? It would appear - just round the corner from our Airbnb. Bodega el Porvenir is set in its original building from the 1890s, and has a garden in which you can sit and enjoy your sample(s) over a dozen delicious home made empanadas under the shade of a carob tree. Nini was our very capable and helpful host (and speaks English as well as Spanish and Portuguese).

We struggled to find Bodegas that offer wine by the glass in Cafayate (a lot only offer full degustation) and my wife and I don’t really drink red wine, so a full degustation wasn’t for us; but luckily here we were able to buy wine by the glass with their wine dispensers. And not only that, they have the best Torrentes in town! Also worth to mention that the Bodega is beautiful and the staff gave us a lot of information and were very friendly, giving us recommendations of where to go and what to do in town.

I went to buy some wine based on a recommendation. I was looking for El Porvenir, and by chance, they were just switching out that wine in the dispenser. I got to taste a small amount of what was left, which helped me confidently decide to buy it without any regrets. The staff member who was there at the time was incredibly kind and helpful.
